What’s Your Story: An introduction to Crafting Scenes by Karl Malmberg
So just what is a scene?
A scene is a unit of conflict lived through by the point of view character
But a dictionary definition still doesn’t tell us how to write a scene.
Conflict may be external such as two people fighting or having an argument
Or, conflict may be internal such as someone torn between two conflicting thoughts.
But in order to actually write a scene we need to know what it’s made of
A working scene consists of 4 elements
A want: A want can be a person, place, or thing that the character wants
An obstacle: An obstacle can be an external person or thing, or an internal thought or feeling that prevents the character from getting what they want
An action: An action is what the character does about it, and how they do reveals what kind of character they are.
A Resolution: A resolution is the end result of the scene, and it may be win, lose, or mixed victory.
