UNIT 5: CAN YOU SWIM? - Lesson 2
A. Objectives:
- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Ask and answer question about whether someone can do something.
- Sentence Patterns: Can you ___? − Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
- Vocabulary: play table tennis, play volleyball, play the piano, play the guitar.
- Listen and number the pictures in the correct order.
- Read and complete the gapped exchanges, using the pictures.
- Sing the song “Can you swim?”

3. Attitudes: Ps know to take care of their friends.

C. Procedure:
I. Warm- up.
- Ask some Ps to talk about what they can or can’t do.
II. New lesson:
* Period 29:

2. - Ask Ps to open their SB on page 32. Set the context.
- Play the recording through for Ps to listen to the dialogue.
- Play the recording again, pausing after each line for Ps to repeat a few times.
- Ask Ps to repeat the dialogue in groups, then in pairs.
- Check Ps’ comprehension of the dialogue.
* Sentence patterns:
- Elicit the sentence patterns: A: Can you play volleyball?
B: Yes, I can./ No, I can’t.
+ Use: Asking and answering questions about whether someone can do
something.
2. Point and say:
* Vocabulary:
- Teach the new words: play table tennis, play volleyball, play the piano, play the
guitar
- Ask Ps to repeat a few times.
- Run through all the pictures. Tell Ps the practice purpose.
- Do the task with one pupil as a model (picture a).
- Get Ps to work in pairs or groups to practice saying about the nationality, using
the sentence pattern and each picture as a cue. Monitor the activity and offer help.
- Call on some Ps to perform the task in front of the class.
3. Let’s talk:
-Tell the class that they are going to practise further by asking and answering
questions about whether someone can do something.
- Ask Ps to work in pairs to ask and answer questions about whether someone
can do something.
- Set a time limit for the class to practise. T goes around the class and helps if
necessary.
- Call some pairs of Ps to perform the task to the class. Then give feedback.

3. - Run through all the pictures in section 4 on page 33 of the SB. Tell Ps the
listening purpose.
- Play the recording through for Ps to listen.
- Play the recording again for Ps to do the task.
- Play the recording once more for Ps to check their answers.
- Have Ps to swap their answers in pairs
- Call on some volunteers to report the answers to the class, the others listen and
comment.

5. Look and write:
- Ask Ps to open their SB on page 33. Tell them the writing purpose.
- Get Ps to do the task individually.
- Ask Ps to exchange their answers with their partners. Monitor the activity and
offer help when necessary.
- Announce the correct answers. Correct mistakes when necessary.

6. Let’s sing:
- Have Ps read each line of the lyrics. Check comprehension.
- Play the recording all the way through. Ask Ps to do choral and individual

- When they are familiar with the tune, ask a group to perform.
- Have the class sing the song again.

A. Objectives:
- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Ask and answer question about whether someone can do something.
- Pronounce the letters s and sw in the words sing and swim respectively.
- Listen and number the sentences. Then say them aloud.
- Say the chant Can you sing?
- Read the paragraph, and write the name of the player under each picture.
- Read the guiding paragraph, and write about themselves.
- Interview three friends, and complete the chart.

1. Listen and repeat:
- Ask Ps to open their SB on page 34.Tell Ps that they are going to listen to the
chant and pronounce correctly the sounds of the letters s as in sing, sw as in swim.
- Help Ps to pronounce the focused sounds.
- Play the recording for Ps to listen to and repeat the chant. Repeat the step a few
times.
- Call on some Ps to sing the chant in front of the class.
2. Listen and number. Then say aloud:
- Tell Ps the listening purpose.
- Give them a few seconds to read the sentences in silence and guess the words to
fill the gaps.
- Play the recording through for Ps to listen.
- Play the recording again for Ps to do the task.
- Play the recording once more for Ps to check their answers.
- Have Ps trade their answers in pairs
- Call on some volunteers to read the sentences aloud, the others listen and
comment.

3. Let’s chant:
- Open the book on page 34. Tell them that they are going to sing the chant.
- Ask pupils listen to the recording and sing the chant in chorus.
6. - Pupils sing the chant individually. Monitor the activity and offer help when

- Tell Ps to read the texts and fill the blanks.
- Let Ps read the texts and do the task individually. Go around and offer help, if
necessary.
- Have Ps swap their answers before checking as a class.
- If there is enough time, let some pairs to ask and answer the questions.

- T guides Ps to write a short paragraph about what they can or can’t do.
- Have Ps work in pairs or groups to discuss what they are going to write. Then
