2. In this lesson, you will be introduced to
more ways of diagnosing your computer’s
health.
You will be equipped with knowledge
and skills in measuring and calculating the
speed and capacity of various computer
components. Also in this lesson, you will
also be introduced to different memory
units and its conversions.
3. Learning Targets In this lesson, you should
be able to:
Identify the computer components which
are measurable;
demonstrate the procedures correctly
in measuring computer components; and
convert a given number into various
memory units.
4. Essential question:
How important measurement in
computer hardware servicing?
What do you think would happen if
computer components are not being
measured?

8. Where do you usually see those words
that you have found in the word search
puzzle?
In this lesson, you will be introduced to
the importance of mensuration and
calculation in computer hardware
servicing.
9. Learn about It!
These two are important to diagnose the
health of the computer.
Measuring a computer component will
tell you as a technician of how fast a
computer performs.
10. And how much storage the computer
has.
Memory Units
In computer, the amount of data that
can be store din a device is measured
through memory units.
11.
12.
13. Measuring Computer
Components In computer hardware
servicing, there are two main
components that are measured:
1. Storage devices
2. Processor.
14. 1. Storage devices are the type of
computer hardware that has the
capability of storing data.
It has two types:
1. Volatile storage devices.
2. Nonvolatile storage devices
15. Volatile storage devices- These are the
storage devices with data that are non-
retrievable after a power cycle.
Example is random access memory.
16. Nonvolatile storage devices- These
pertain to storage devices where data can
be saved and accessed after a power
cycle.
Example is hard disk drive.
17. 2. Processor- is the brain of the
computer. It is used to regulate the data
flow of instructions in the computer.
Two component:
Control unit and
Arithmetic logic unit.
18. Control unit- is a part of processor
that is used to get instructions from the
memory and execute it.
Arithmetic logic unit- is a part of
processor that is assigned to handle all
arithmetic and logical operations
20. Hard Disk Drive (HDD). It is a
computer hardware used to store data.
The hard disk drive is a nonvolatile
device; this means that the data stored
in it are still retrievable even after the
computer has been power cycled (tuned
on and off).
21. The following are the procedures in
measuring a hard disk drive:
1. 1. Search or click the File
Explorer.
22.
23.
24. Random Access Memory (RAM).
It is also known as the “working memory” of
the computer.
It is a hardware used to handle and store data
temporarily.
RAM is the component that allows the
computer to work with multiple tasks at a
single time. The higher the capacity of the
RAM, the more the tasks that a computer can
perform
25.
26. The following are the procedures in measuring a RAM:
1. On your keyboard, press altogether the CTRL, ALT,
and Delete keys. It will lead you to a menu.
2. Click Task Manager on the menu.
3. On the task manager window, click the Performance
tab.
4. Click Memory on the navigation pane on the left
side of the window.
27.
28. In the illustration, you can see that the RAM
installed in the computer has the total capacity
of 4.00 Gigabytes. The graphs and statistics below
change from time to time depending on tasks that
the computer perform. In this case, out of 4GB
total capacity, only 3.1 GB are usable. In the
illustration, there are 175 MB of data stored in the
RAM, and there are 884 MB of space available.
RAM is a volatile memory. This means that after a
power cycle, the data stored in it will be deleted.
29. Processor- It is the hardware that
processes and regulates instructions in
the computer.
30. The following are the procedures in measuring a
processor:
1. On your keyboard, press altogether the CTRL, ALT,
and Delete keys. It will lead you to a menu.
2. Click Task Manager on the menu.
3. On the task manager window, click the Performance
tab.
4. Click CPU on the navigation pane on the left side of
the window
31.
32. In the illustration, you can see at the upper right corner of the
window the brand, model, and the maximum speed of each CPU
installed in your computer. In this case, the processor installed in
the computer is Intel Core i3- 4030U and the maximum speed of
each core is 1.90 Gigahertz. To measure further the speed of
your processor, you have to check how many cores are there in
your processor.
Follow the instructions in checking the number of cores below:
1. On any window, press the window and the ‘R’ key at the
same time to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type on the dialog box, “dxdiag.” Press enter and click yes
on the prompt box.
33.
34.
35. 3. In the Direct X Diagnostic Tool
window below, you’ll see in the system
information, under the processor, that
there are 4CPUs(quad-core)in the
processor with the speed of 1.90 GHz
each.
