The rime is the last part of the word, word family, and contains the vowels. The long vowel sound in the rime part of each word (one syllable) is made with a vowel team (VV) or a vowel pattern (VCV). Onset-rimes help beginning readers in transitioning from hearing individual sounds in words to hearing parts of words (rimes). This is a helpful skill in building reading fluency.
