Editor's Notes
Nation Building is a call to all South Africans to take action in building a better South Africa. At The Hope Factory we believe that despite the current reality of a declining economy, a future filled with hope is still a possibility for our Nation. Although recently released statistics show a drop in entrepreneurial intentions, entrepreneurial development, with the aim of creating sustainable small businesses, is a solution to changing this trend. Together we can find ways to build our economy and steer it back on to a growth path. Let’s build hope through entrepreneurship.
I would imagine that each of you in this room, are here because you recognise how important it is that businesses remain sustainable. Businesses today however operate in challenging times, with an ever changing business environment, which thus creates the need to continue to find solutions to ensure sustainable business growth. The development of small businesses in particular is a key driver to ensuring economic growth in our country as a solution to our high unemployment rate, which has left 8.9 Million people jobless (StatsSA).
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report indicates that 71% of small businesses fail within their first year of operation. It however indicates, on a positive note that 70% of those businesses are more likely to succeed if they receive mentoring.
At The Hope Factory we aim to take an active approach in transforming our nation. We focus on building economic hope through personal, financial and business development that at its core has a result focused mentoring curriculum. This has led to the creation of almost 100 new jobs within NMB, and Gauteng during 2015 through our high impact and dynamic entrepreneurial development programmes.
As an Enterprise and Supplier Development organisation, we operate within the B-BBEE framework, offering Enterprise and Supplier Development and Socio-Economic Development Solutions. The B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice through these elements provide a platform for the growth and development of small black owned businesses. The recent changes in the B-BBEE Codes in particular give growth opportunities for small black-owned businesses through the introduction of Supplier Development, with its focus on developing businesses to become supplier ready.
Small Business development therefore requires a collective approach from non-profit organisations like, The Hope Factory, the public and private sector to bring our economy back unto a positive growth path. During the State of the Nation Address earlier this year, all South Africans were encouraged not to be despondent, but to rather take action and work together.
The Department of Arts and Culture defines Nation Building as “the process whereby a diverse society comes together towards eradicating the divisions and injustices of the past; to foster unity; and promote a countrywide conscious sense of being proudly South African, committed to the country.” This is a call to all South Africans to actively participate in building a better South Africa. At The Hope Factory we believe that such a future for our Nation is possible, a future filled with hope.
Join us in our current #BuildHopeSA campaign which is a call to action, to the private sector and all South Africa citizens. By supporting The Hope Factory financially through the B-BBEE Codes, you can become part of the solution for our country’s challenges.
