Your Mission
Imagine you are a L&D professional at a medium-sized
communications firm.
A new executive takes over your division and asks you and your
colleagues to:
Review the company’s current quarterly training workshops.
Analyze how well they reflect best practices in learning.
Create a proposal for updating the company’s training strategy to
support employee engagement and long-term retention.
You and a team of 3 colleagues have 4 weeks to complete this
project, with the support of a facilitator who will guide you and
provide feedback along the way.

Key Facets of Problem and
Project-Based Learning
Learners master content and skills in the context of solving a
carefully-crafted real-world problem or case study.
Teams work together to define and solve smaller challenges,
with facilitator’s help
Learning activities stretch over longer periods of time
Challenges culminate with authentic products (project-based
learning) or authentic solutions (problem-based learning)

Remind audience that you began the webinar by asking them to make themselves comfortable. Tell them that this is why.
Remind the participants that the session began with you asking them to reflect on why they were here, which helped prime them to think about their prior experiences, knowledge, and challenges and set the stage for the rest of the webinar’s content to sink in.
NOTE TO MEDIA DEPARTMENT: Please replace graphic with a better brain/neural network graphic
There are many possibilities for making the learning experience multimodal, interactive, and engaging, both online and offline.
For example, online learning sites like Lynda.com offer rich video tutorials that model concepts both visually and verbally.
In addition to lectures, speakers, and slides, face-to-face trainings offer additional possibilities to get learners physically engaged in the learning experience. For example, getting learners out of their chairs, writing ideas on sticky notes, posting them on the wall, and exploring the room to see others’ ideas is a great way to make trainings more active and interactive.

Explain to participants that asking “why” helps people break apart new facts and concepts and integrate them into existing knowledge structures in the brain.
If you’re designing face-to-face corporate training, there are all kinds of activities you can design to give learners the chance to dig in and learn together, which boosts engagement and enhances learning. For example, you might design a role play activity or debate, give participants time to discuss a concept or problem they’re tackling, or encourage learners to participate in discussion groups.
Social learning can also support anytime, anywhere training experiences like those offered on Lynda.com. Face-to-face or virtual discussion groups, online communities, and forums in which employees can apply what they’re learning to company-specific problems can help learners deepen their knowledge by actively processing it with their peers.
NOTE TO MEDIA DEPARTMENT: Please replace clip art baseballs with other baseball graphics in two contrasting colors of your choice, keeping the patterns and spacing the same
“Researchers at California Polytechnic State University conducted a study of interleaving in sports that illustrates why the tactic is so effective. When baseball players practiced hitting, interleaving different kinds of pitches improved their performance on a later test in which the batters did not know the type of pitch in advance (as would be the case, of course, in a real game).”– “How Tests Make Us Smarter”
