The British Steel Ltd Industry on the verge of embarking on an exciting New Journey over to emabark on a good sustainability experiece economically, Socially and environementally.
4. This is Purely Economic Sustainability
Tata Steel (Previous Owners) were making a loss a year earlier (about £79 million)
before British Steel Ltd started making a small profit (£49 pre-tax)
This is a business – we are majorly interested in profits (Equity > Liabilities)
Cutting Expenses, investing in the future , lean processes, Hard Work
Its always about the Long Term Profits for us
5. I prefer the concept of “dominating” more than “competing”
E.g. there are other competing word processing software out there but Microsoft Word
Dominates all of them
Helping our Clients achieve their aims through steel
Sadly, we have competition
Economically we need to be the most profitable – eg winning all the contracts
Socially we need to be the most ethical with our suppliers/ contractors, communities, and
in-house fellow workers
Environmentally we need to dominate in taking care of our environment and subscribing
to a “nothing-wasted” mentality
6. Mainly Social Sustainability
During Industrial Revolution, many manual workers became unemployed due to
the introduction of machines.
Many workers had to couple manufacturing-knowledge with machine-knowledge to get
back in to industry
Then came Computers that automated Machines better than a human
Yet again, many workers had to couple manufacturing-knowledge with computer-
knowledge to get back in to industry
Artificial Intelligence on the Rise
Manufacturing-knowledge is not enough. We need to couple other-relevant-knowledge –
this is our challenge
7. Was Mr Gary Klesh right? – an industrial list also interested in Tata’s Sunthorpe’s
Site declined saying that British Government Department for Business does not
take care of its energy-intensive industries. Mr Klesh said
“You have Middle Eastern countries giving free gas to aluminium smelters and
the Chinese government supporting their steel industry. We don’t have a level
playing field.(1)”
This is an on-going debate
How will Brexit affect us?
How will Donald Trump’s decisions affect us?
8. GOOD STANDARDS OF BRITISH
STEEL LTD
British Steel Ltd has “very good”
rating under the Sustainability
Standard BES6001
We need to stay very well below the
BES6001 as a challenge and
improving on our best performances
every year
Scunthorpe’s Sustainability
Performance Data
9. GOOD STANDARDS OF BRITISH
STEEL LTD
Planting Trees
Re-use of water
Multicycling
Re-use of materials
Drawing electricity from the 9th
Largest Solar farm in the UK =
reducing CO2 emission by 20K tonne
per year
Presently having a Successful 3 year
program to reduce Dust (Harmful to
Environment)
REWASTEE (2)
EU-Funded program that began
early this year to make Dust
profitable on all parts of
sustainability
Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD)
Either Zinc is extracted and then to
landfill or
Directly to Landfill
10. Method
PCM = Phase Changing Material
The Shape Stabilized PCM is materially non-hazardrous and thermally inert (due
to added PCM), excellent sound insulation and can be used for various function
alone or coupled with other materials in the construction industry.
Our Challenge would be making lucrative eco-innovative products over next 5
years to benefit us economically, socially and environmentally
