Why Was Theatre So Popular In American Theatre
Back In Time Theatre has a huge effect on people not only in America but also London. The British Invasion has really shaped on how theatre is in the
present day. When the british invasion came to be this was when the american director– choreographer era just ended. Around this time is when musical
theatre really began to plummet. One of the reasons why theatre was in such a bad place at this time and was not popular was because the shows
that were on the stage were not a success. Some of the shows at this time were Rags, Smile, and Nick and Nora. Because of the failure in shows, the
runnings on broadway dropped dramatically. Within 10 years the amount of shows running went from 32 to only 19. It can be assumed that because
the amount of shows dropped that attendance dropped as well. No one wanted to go watch theatre anymore so the attendance dropped from 6 million
people to 4.6 million people. Theatre was so low right before the british invasion started. America welcomed the invasion because theatre was not
thriving at all. If London was successful in theatre there, that would mean more tourists would travel to New York and make it more successful there as
well, which it did. Theatre... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The more shows put on the more people would sell and rent props help make the sets, or just be involved in theatre somehow. Having more
available jobs for people is never a bad thing. The thriving of broadway once again has helped many people be able to provide for their families
and be able to put food on the table for them. This also ties in on what was happening in America during this time period. Ronald Reagan just
became president. Ronald Reagan was able to bring a new control in social, economic and political life. When he did so he was able to help create
more job, in the similar way that because theatre began to become popular again it created more jobs as

Movie And Movie: The Phantom Of The Opera
Synopsis
The rumors about the Phantom live in the Opera house. New managers of the Opera stubbornly deny the clear evidence of his existence and act
contrary to the Phantom`s instructions.
Christine Daae triumphs at the gala of old managers retirement. Raul, Vicomte de Chagny recognizes in the new diva his childhood friend and recalls
his feelings to her. But Christine denies the fact of acquaintance with him. Her attitude shocked Raul.
Later on the same day Phantom of the Opera kidnaps Christine and keeps her in his house on the band of the underground lake bellow the Opera.
There he reveals one of his identities to her. Eric (how the ghost names himself) acknowledges that he is the Angel of music, who has been teaching
her singing for the past few weeks. Also Eric makes he promise her to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But almost no one recall the original novel of Gaston Leroux, which, as I personally think, undeservedly forgotten.
I have read the original novel after watching the movie and the musical. In this work I would like to compare the novel and the movie to each other.
For comparison I have chose the movie "The Phantom of the Opera" of 2004, by Joel Schumacher.
There are significant differences between the original novel and the plot of the movie, despite the creators saved the major storyline.
The most significant difference between the novel and the movie, that I have noticed, is related with positioning of the main character. In the novel
Opera Ghost Eric is shown as a complicated and controversial person. We learn him not only as a musician but also as a traveller and an engineer. In
the novel only three characters have seen the Phantom of the Opera close enough. They are Christine, Raul and Persian. In the movie Opera Ghost is
almost depersonalized. He have lost his name and turned into a cold–minded, prudent, ruthless and possessed

Differences Between The Book And The Phantom Of The Opera
Thesis Statement: Gaston Leroux (1910) novel is more in depth as compared to Joel Schumacher (2004) movie adaption of the novel. Gaston Leroux
has described and built his characters in a way that it has ranged from a spoilt prima donna Carlotta, to the mysterious Persian from Erik's past that has
been commemorated by numerous memorable adaptations. However regardless of this, it has always managed to perpetuate a strong impact to all
literature readers with its remarkable element of Gothic horror literature that feeds off a deeper and darker version than any version that follows.

The Phantom Of The Opera
The Phantom of the Opera started out as a book written by Gaston Leroux, published January 8th in 1910 (Haining, 1). There have been several
adaptations since then, including Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical. The other adaptations were Das Phantom der Opera, which is also known as
Das Gespent im Opernhaus produced during 1916 in Germany as a silent drama film, this is known as a lost film due to no known copies existing at
this time. A silent drama horror was produced on November 15th, 1925, a drama thriller was produced during August 27th in 1943, a horror film was
produced June 25th during 1962, and an indie thriller, called Phantom of the Paradise was adapted from Phantom of the Opera and then produced in
October 31st of 1974.
Andrew Lloyd Webberis the son of William Lloyd Webber as well as an English composer and producer who studied at Westminster school, RCM
and then at Oxford University. He wrote incidental music for shows at toy theaters before he went to Westminster. While at Westminster he wrote
music for school revues. Afterwards he was commissioned to write choral music for Colet Court School. Webber has also written film scores and
variations for a cello and rock band (Lamb 1). He divorced his first wife in September 1983 and the next year married Sarah Brightman. She proceeded
to create the role of Christine to test her vocal range as a soprano. They were divorced in November 1990 (Callum 1).

ART CRITICISM PAPER
ART CRITICISM PAPER
"The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter" by Elizabeth Louise Vigee–LeBrun
In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly
portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700's and
the early 1900's. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee–Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition.
"The Grafin von Scholfeld with her Daughter" is oil on canvas art piece painted in 1793. It is a painting of a woman holding her daughter on her lap, the

The little girl's dress gives the texture of lightness and seems like airy fabric that would be thin and translucent. The time in this piece is very
accurate of the late 1700's and when viewing it, the time seems classic. The emphasis of this piece is mainly the mother and the daughter, however
when looking at them you are drawn into looking at their realistic eyes. The eyes seem like the focal point which draws the viewer in to the picture.
The relationship in the painting between the mother and daughter give it a definite asymmetrical balance and maybe a little radial balance. A radial
balance because of their eyes being the central focus, then the faces, then the holding of each other, then where they are placed on the canvas, and then
the bench and the landscape. The colors used by the painter, also creates balance with in the picture. The wine colored dress of the mother, red sash
of the daughter's dress, ruby lips, and the rosy cheeks give a warm feeling to the central focus of the mother and daughter. The cool color of the sky is
the same as the women's eyes as well as the trees and green on the mother's dress. These balances give unity or a unifying feeling to the painting,
especially between the mother and daughter.
The idea of this piece is to show the connection between mother and daughter being painted. It shows the time and the classic style of the

The Music That Transformed A Hidden Classic Into Modern...
The Music That Transformed a Hidden Classic into Modern Culture Le FantГґme de l'OpГ©ra, a fictional novel published in 1911, by Gaston Leroux,
puts the reader right in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House in the late 1800s (Cox: Oxford Reference). An adventure, involving tragic love and
gothic elements, surrounds a detective's search to reveal the mystery of the "Phantom of the Opera". The detective acts as the narrator who reflects on
his investigations of the Paris Opera House through allusions and the tragedies that occur throughout the novel's entirety. Leroux especially highlights
the Phantom's undying love for a woman named Christine Daae and displaying the most primitive feeling towards another. The novel itself has inspired

She argues that adaptations are a continuous development of culture and that "with adaptations, we seem to desire the repetition as much as the
change"; however, she argues that a work is transformed (Hutcheon 9). Her valuable points about the rationale of adaptation work is the underlying
argument in the continuation of making original works more valuable and in The Phantom of the Opera, music does just that. When the musical was
adapted from the novel, it heavily maintained the idea that music was the central theme within the novel's allusions and metaphors. Music is an
emotionally charged realm and can evoke the most powerful of emotions if done well. The original text of the novel is merely highlighted with the
use of the composed soundtrack by Webber. Webber's adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most ideal examples of this phenomenal
skill of leaving an original story completely rendered into a product seeping with art. It is important to note when referencing adaptations that the first
definition that appears when one looks up "adaptation" into the Oxford Reference dictionary are a variety of definitions that range from just about
everything from an adaptation of a book to an adaptation of a recipe. This being noted, one can assume that an adaptation is any sort of adjustment to
an original piece of work. However, Hutcheon references Walter Benjamin, a German cultural critic, where he states that

Argument for Paying College Athletes

Have you ever heard of a business that made billions of dollars, yet did not pay their employees? Seems pretty remarkable doesn't it? Well this
business is known as the NCAA. According to an article in the New York Times, the NCAA made $770 million from just the three

Basketball Tournament, but how much did the athletes who participated in said tournament receive? If you said zero then you would be correct. The
athletes that poured their blood, sweat and tears into practice everyday and into the 30 plus game regular season did not see a dime. It is hard to

' But there 's nothing wrong with it. And you 're not going to convince me that there is something wrong with it (SI, 2013)." This is the feeling of
many college athletes that were in the same boat or that are currently in the boat. They may not know where their next meal is coming from or how
they are going to afford a car payment. Many will take money and not even question it. They know what they are doing is wrong and they are putting
themselves and the school in jeopardy. At the time the reward is worth the risk they are taking. There are many other cases happening across the
country that no one knows about. It is interesting how Foster came out and said how he felt that it was not a big deal and that he did not think he was
doing anything wrong. He would fall into a large percent of college athletes that feel it is unfair for them to not see anything from all the revenue they
bring in.
Many will argue that college athletes do not need to be compensated because they are student–athletes; and the key word for them is student. One
argument against paying college athletes is that they are basically receiving a free education from a top school. A four–year scholarship will cover
everything a student–athlete needs. This includes: tuition, room and board, books, medical coverage and meals. For example, Duke University costs
$57,180 to attend (Bleacher Report, 2013). Those on an athletic scholarship at Duke are receiving a high quality education and are

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Life and Work Essay
Andrew Lloyd Webber was born on March 22, 1948. He composed many musicals throughout his lifetime including; "Evita", "Phantom of the
Opera", and "Cats". Webber grew up in South Kensington to parents William who was a professional in theory and composition at the Royal
College of Music in England and Jean who was a singer and a violinist in the same school. By age three Webber was playing the violin. Then by
age six he composed his own songs. Then by age nine he had a piece of music published in the magazine, "Music Teacher." Thanks to Webber's Aunt
Vi who got him into theatre. She took him to many big production shows like "My Fair Lady." Vi and Weber also have seen many films together too.

That is when "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was born. Webber soon married 18

(Webber and Rice) on the move they came together and wrote "Jesus Christ Superstar". They set rock music to the story of Jesus Christ which was
a big success. Then they wrote Jeeves in 1975 and Rice did not want anything to do with it. That's when Alan Ayckbourn wrote the lyrics. Then
Webber and Rice came together again and wrote "Evita" a story about the first lady of Argentina married to Juan Peron. This was also a huge
success. Then they broke up for time to "recharge". Rice said. This is when Webber created the musical "Cats". When Webber was a child he read,
"Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T.S. Eliot. This would soon be turned into the musical "Cats". All of the lyrics were there, he wanted to
add some flavor to them, and so he called on Rice and Trevor Nunn to help. Nunn used to direct the shows that Webber proposed. Webber chose
Nunn's lyrics over Rice's, thus "Cats" was born in 1981. He soon divorced his wife Sara Hugill and moved on to the actress Sarah Brightman in 1984.
Later Brightman was cast as the female role in "The Phantom of the Opera" as Christine Daae. In 1990 Webber announced his divorce with Brightman
after she finished touring with The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webberin the summer. They planed to work things out. Webber stepped out of the

The Phantom Of The Opera
Phantom of the Opera has been around for longer than I can recall, being the musical to talk about among my family as something grand. When I was
the age of only fourteen I received the honor of performing the musical for the first time, although I had to learn a great deal about the script for that
performance, the history behind The Phantom of the Opera is not clear to me. So I started my research their tied to the original piece. Phantom of the

author was inspired by a trip to the Paris opera house, explaining that below the Paris opera house is a lake, and that he recalled an accident in
which the chandelier had fallen some years earlier. (Hall, P.16) Sparking Gaston Leroux to make the book. The book from this point was given to the
hands of a movie producer making a silent film in November 1925. (The Phantom of the Opera (1925)) The film after its first round was then re–done
two more times, one of which was not a success. Andrew Lloyd Webberin May of 1984 hears about the theatre royals stage performance and then

I looked on as Del Packard struggled with the police about getting into the car. The people who had gathered around to watch the action asked
about what had occurred and how I managed to figure it out. I repeated the story of the murder out loud as I had practiced multiple times before in
my head. Del was worried about Rich removing him from his will taking with it the only life he knew and treasured. He figured the only way to
fix the problem was to kill. (People nowadays!) Anyway, he had been learning and mastering the skill of mind control and decided to test it out on
a fellow who would be the least likely to be suspected. Dee! During this time, a meeting had been occurring between Hugh, Justin, and Dee. Dee
needed help to debug the system but what Justin planned was to steal the whole program. Justin went to talk to Rita at the same time that Dee took
a 'bathroom break'. She made sure that H.T. was preoccupied and put on gloves to leave no trace behind. Mind you, she was being manipulated by
Del the whole time. Before the murder, Rita had drugged Rich so that Justin was able to steal the program. Her reason for betrayal was because he
had been the one to break it off, leaving her the one with hurt feelings. I guess that never settles well with ferocious sirens like her. Dee came in soon
after Rita and finished up the job by strangling Rich with a mouse cord and punching the daylight out of him. She drops the gloves underneath Hugh's
bed and returns to the meeting. It continues until everyone has returned to their places. Dee, having lost all memory of her actions goes to ask a question
from Rich. She screams and everyone runs over. And that's where my story begins. It was quite hard to piece together the parts but when it is done, it
is refreshing! So when are those reporters going to show

Story Of An Hour Satire
There is immense power in well–written satire: it can make its audience laugh with witticisms rooted in truths, even make them think differently about
any subject, mundane or critical. Bad satire, however, emphasizes all the wrong parts: it gets its facts wrong, goes off track, and closes its audience's
minds to any new way of thinking it might present. Li Chongyue and Wang Lihua's article would be bad satire, a bad argument. Chongyue and Lihua's
"A Caricature of an Ungrateful and Unfaithful Wife" distorts Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through imaginative exaggeration of character
interaction, emotional ignorance, and its simplification of the characters and the text. Firstly, there is no evidence in the text of "The Story of an Hour"
to suggest that Louise Mallard has been at all unfaithful to her husband. One sentence within the article suggests that some readers have sensed an
extramarital affair–or an attempted one–between Mrs. Mallard and Richards, which, given its inclusion, the authors appear to agree with (Chongyue
and Lihua). However, Richards is mentioned by name in the text of the short story three times: at the beginning when he confirmed the news of
Brently Mallard's death, toward the end when he awaited Josephine and Louise at the bottom of the staircase, and when he tries to block Louise from
seeing Brently Mallard alive as he walks in the door (Chopin). He does not even truly interact with Louise: he is described as "near her" when she

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is based on the biblical story of Joseph, who was born in Canaan, or ancient Israel. In the
musical version, he is listed as the last of the sons of Jacob. His brothers are jealous of Joseph and when they were in the fields, they beat him up
and sold him into slavery to a group of Ishmaelites. The Ishmaelites take Joseph to Egypt, where he first serves the house of Potiphar, one of the
richest men in Egypt. He is accused of attacking Potiphar's Wife and sent to jail. After several years in Jail, Joseph is sent to interpret the dreams of

There is a divide between those with money and those without. Wealth bought power and privilege, which allowed Potiphar to buy Joseph when
he was sold into slavery. Wealth also allowed for individuals like Potiphar and the Pharaoh to put people in jail on a whim. The Narrators spoke of
that ease about the Baker and Butler, "Both in the doghouse for doing their thing" (Joseph, 48). Joseph was innocent of the crimes he was accused
of, but it didn't matter, because Potiphar's Wife accused him and she had the power over him. Political Environment The patriarchy in both
Canaan and Egypt holds the key to power. Jacob was allowed to bestow powers, privileges, and gifts to those he wanted. He chose to give special
treatment to Joseph because his mother was his favorite wife. In Egypt, Pharaoh held all the power. He would get what he wanted or else someone
would pay a price. He had the power to pardon Joseph and release him from jail. When Joseph interprets the dreams correctly and comes up with a
plan for the famine, he gains status in the ranks of Pharaoh's advisors. He can then use this power to both help and test his brothers when they
suddenly arrive one day asking for food. In the world of the play, those with power ultimately find themselves being able to obtain a lot. Those
without power are at the mercy of those with power. There is an added stress about the difference between power and tyranny, as bestowing benefits on
those with less who worked

Phantom Censorship The movie The Phantom of the Opera is an adaption of the novel, The Phantom of the Opera, written by Gaston Leroux in 1909.
It is about an opera house in France, back in 1870, that a man, nicknamed The Phantom, resides in. There is a woman named Christine, whom is an
opera singer. The opera house is bought by two people, whom are unaware of the role the Phantom plays in keeping the opera house safe, and was
paid by the owners a monthly salary of 20,000 French francs! The Phantom tampers with the props above the stage, and drops a backdrop onto the lead
signer, causing her to become furious and screams at the owners and director that she quits. A note falls from the rafters, with the Phantoms signature...

After the camera is finished panning, it soars through a grate in the floor, down to the Phantom's labyrinth, a musty, watery cave,, where he hears her
voice and is instantly in love. From then on, he is to try to get her to stay with him and sing his music, and many deaths are a result of this. An example
is during the final performance where he appears on stage, and Christine follows him down to the labyrinth. However, before running down, he causes
the chandelier, a beautiful, crystal, candle–lit light fixture, to fall, setting the opera house on fire, killing many people. The camera then moves to a

The Power Of Music, Music And Music
There are many ways to tell a story. Throughout my life I've find this to be true. As a storyteller myself, I always try my best to utilize the many
different approaches to telling a story. Whether through music, books, poetry, drawings, films, etc. I've tried them all. I've always been fascinated by
other people's stories. I will always try to retell them myself. Most of the time I usually just talk about them. But once in awhile, I like to use what I
think is the most powerful form of storytelling, music. Music has been part of my life for a while now. Throughout middle school and high school I
was in both Band and Choir. And throughout these years I come to understand the power that music has with storytelling. Especially in films, I've
grown up watching films and they have impacted my life greatly. The films, "Jesus Christ Super Star," "La La Land," and "The Grand Budapest

I grew up Catholic, just as my family grew up Catholic. Every year during the season of Lent, around the time of Holy Week, my family and I would
honor Jesus's final days with many traditions. Tradition such as attending mass, receiving palms, having our feet washed and of course watching the
1974 classic "Jesus Christ Superstar." Now the Roman Catholic Church dosen't considered "Jesus Christ Superstar" a tradition, but I do. My family

Gaston Leroux's 'Phantom Of The Opera'

The Ghostly scares of the Terror Beneath The Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux is a quite terrifying, suspenseful, and mysterious book that
will definitely keep you on your feet. This book is about a Phantom, who has been told for doing horrible things inside the opera house in Paris. Many
tragedies happen and everyone flees from fear. No one believes anyone about this ghost, there is only one person in the opera house who knows the
real truth.
Gaston Leroux's novel starts out with a scene in the opera house. Christine Daae was singing on the stage, and afterwards the managers were going
to have a party, because it was their last night at the opera house. Christine happens to be the protagonist of the book. Christine fainted in the middle
of her show and was dragged off stage like she saw a ghost. Raoul, has a crush on Christine and wants to talk to her and get to know her. Christine
was in her dressing room and wanted to be left alone. Soon after this, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

doorway in Christine's dressing room. In half a minute, Raoul and the foreign stranger were in. The foreign Stranger had to press his finger against a
spot in the pattern of the wall. The revolving mirror completed its circle and the two men held their breath. They were still trying to find Christine, by
going to every cellar. The third cellar was the monster's home. They finally reached the third cellar and it was lit very dimly. Next, the Foreign
Stranger led Raoul down two staircases to the fifth cellar, because they thought they heard something. A flaming head was following them as they
started to run, and then they ran into a wall and did not know what to do. The next thing they know, rats started crawling up their

In 1911, the book "The Phantom of the Opera", written by Gaston Leroux, was published. In April of 1929, Universal Studios premiered a silent,
black and white film based on the book (The Phantom of the Opera Website). "The Phantom of the Opera" went through many more stages until it
was able to become the Broadway musical that we know today. In 1930, dialogue and music was added to the silent film and later in 1945, it was

It is "arguably the most popular musical of all time" and for good reason(The Phantom of the Opera Website). "The Phantom of the Opera" has
been performed in many countries and continents such as Africa, Australia, Japan, and Latin America, and over 130 million people have seen it
(The Phantom of the Opera Website). The musical has really beautiful music and I like that the majority of the show is kind of a flashback and it's
not really taking place in real time. That's not very apparent throughout the show and it does not really impact it but I enjoy that it's different. I also
never noticed until I was rewatching the performance for this journal that the lot that the chandelier is in at the start of the show is 666. I think
that says a lot about the connotations of the chandelier and what it was a part of. I really enjoy this show despite it not really being my type of
musical. I like that it is able to stand on it's own without a ton of flashy dance numbers. The music is the thing that stands out the most. Opera has
not been very popular in the last few decades so I think that it is very impressive that a show called Phantom of the Opera was able to do so well in
the late 80's and continues to do extremely well today. I cannot see the show closing anytime soon on Broadway and I'm not sure if

Archetypal Characters and Symbols in The Phantom of the Opera
The story of The Phantom of the Opera appeals to many types of personalities and people of all ages because of its archetypal characters and
patterns. Carl Jung theorized that we are born with innate tendencies to perceive things a certain way: "a kind of readiness to reproduce over and
over again the same or similar mythical ideas . . ."1. These repeated ideas are archetypes. The basic legend of The Phantom takes place in 19th century
Paris, and is that of a young and talented, but untrained singer named Christine. Erik, the Phantom, is a disfigured genius of many fields, including
music, architecture, magic, and science. His fatal flaw stems from his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The children's version, meant for 8 to 12 year–olds, is the most like the original 1920s Gaston Leroux version. One of the few things that is changed,
other than the overall abbreviation of the novel, is simplification of the language. For example, Erik begins describing himself by saying, "I was ugly.
Worse than ugly"3. This straightforward, childlike language puts the novel at the preteen reading level while preserving Erik's crucial description. The
Phantom of the Opera is the most popular book in Random House Publishing's youth "Bullseye Chiller" series, above other tales of vampires,
werewolves, mummies, and witches4. Even children can identify with the love triangle among the three main characters – Erik, Christine and Raoul.
They probably still pity his unrequited love for Christine, and the way in which he was mistreated. Night Magic, another adaptation, is much lighter
reading and aimed at a different audience than the more literary variations. Night Magic is the modern–day romance version of Phantom, spanning two
decades. Erik becomes a reclusive scarred contractor, and Christine is now Marisa, a spoiled and orphaned teenager with a beautiful voice. The
traditional Erik kills without a thought when he feels threatened, while Erik's most raging moment in Night Magic consists of him throwing a stool
across the room when a client has been flirtatious with Marisa5. This adaptation is lacking the "dangerous" side of Erik, so as not to scare

The Phantom of the Opera Essay
The Phantom of the Opera is a novel written by Gaston Leroux. The novel takes place in Paris. The exact time is unknown but would be around
1910. The reviews from the critics are very different. Although Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera has not generally been highly commended
by critics, many would agree that there are several elements that prove Leroux to be a talented writer. One of the strongest elements in the novel is
the narrator's voice. The narrator is on a quest, starting out with the question of whether the opera ghost was real and is trying to find evidence in
order to reach a conclusion. He takes the reader behind the scenes of the opera. He does this with the themes of appearance and... Show more content on

Horror is another important theme. "The most distinct horror device is Erik's face. Though he is described as having a disease, its manifestation
gives him the exact semblance of a skull, so that even as a young man he was able to travel to county fairs and bill himself as the living dead man"
(Newark). The last theme is innocence. "The phantom's anger with the society that has rejected him is balanced in this novel with the simple
innocence of the love between Christine Daae and Raoul de Chagny" (Newark). The narration of a novel is also any important part of a novel. The
narrator is never known but it can be assumed that what he describes is accurate from the story he is telling, even though he was never there when the
events occurred. Leroux is pretending that the story is being reconstructed from a variety of sources – newspaper articles, memoirs, interviews with
witnesses and archives. The narrator tells how he researched the legend of the phantom for many years. The narration is roughly thirty years after the
events conveyed in the novel. At the beginning, the narrator insists, "The Opera ghost really existed. He was not, as was long believed, a creature of
the imagination of the artist, the superstition of the managers, or a product of the absurd and

Analysis Of ' Phantom Of The Opera '
"Echoes is written in C Sharp Minor, and the riff begins on the tonic chord. Phantom of the Opera is in B Flat minor and also begins on the tonic
chord. Putting tempo differences aside, the C Sharp Minor and B Flat Minor Chords respectively hold for a relative equivalent beats. In the final
beat(s) of the bar, a descending chromatic four note pattern plays, beginning on the tonic note, and finishing a major third below (A majorchord in
Echoes, and a G flat major in Phantom)...The chords however are comparably far less audible due to the left hand accenting octaves of the root notes,
and serve only as slight substance and not much audible difference" (Alexondrovics, 2016. p. 5).

(Alexondrovics, 2016. p. 5). Webber had lawyers who countered that any legal action would cost the plaintiff more than the royalties would bring in
and were therefore not worth the trouble.
Also, more popular artists of today are not the only ones Webber has been accused of stealing from. If a person is going to compose an operatic
musical, they are going to need to understand opera a little better and perhaps search out some inspirations for it. This is the very system Webber had
to use when composing for Phantom of the Opera. "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera is almost entirely similar to the song "A Quello
che tacete" from Puccini's La Fanciulla del West or the English title, Girl of the Golden West. Webber does not even try to cover his tracks.

"From 1992 to 1996 the University of Michigan had a group of five young men known as the "Fab Five", and their star player was Chris Webber.
Throughout all four years they made millions of dollars for their athletic department as well as for the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA), but while doing so they somehow seemed to be making a large amount of money themselves. The public did not want to believe they could
be taking part in gambling as Chris Webber would talk about how he did not have enough money to buy even a Big Mac from the dollar menu at

Because the public tends to take pity on the poor college athlete struggling to pay for food they instead took his side and agreed college athletes should
somehow be reimbursed believing they had done nothing wrong. Eventually the truth came out that Chris Webber and his teammates had received
thousands from Ed Martin, a big gambler in Michigan who made thousands, and he was arrested for money laundering. Along with that came
speculation that Webber and his teammates had also taken place in "point shaving", although never proven it was never forgotten. (Torr, 64

Analysis Of Phantom Of The Opera
"A good film is when the price of dinner, the theatre admission and the babysitter were worth it" (Alfred Hitchcock). A good filmmaker may believe
that their film is amazing, but the success of the film truly lies in the hands of the audience. Every successful movie has appealed to an audience, but
one has stood out for many years. Webber scratched the extra nonsense fromGaston Leroux's version of Phantom of the Opera; and he focused on the
elements that appeal to an audience. Any audience, young or old, all enjoy mystery, romance, sensuality, and a Byronic hero. Andrew Lloyd Webber
was able to create the most successful entertainment piece of all time because he focused on the traits that any audience wants, a little bit of
mystery, romance, sensuality, and a Byronic hero. Mystery is an important factor in entertainment, allowing the audience to stay engaged with what
is happening. Andrew Lloyd Webber incorporates mystery beautifully in his movie version of Phantom of the Opera. His mystery mainly comes
from the setting of the Paris Opera House itself. The Opera House is filled with trap doors, contraptions, and a torture chamber, which the Phantom
uses to his advantage. The Phantom gets Christine down into his secret lair because of a trap door located within the mirror in her room.

Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Analysis
The musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has lyrics written by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber (Gänzl). Joseph
is one of Lloyd Webber's most popular works and has been performed in multiple countries both professionally and in schools. It is based on the story
of Joseph and his coat of many colors from the Torah. The majority of the musical takes place inancient Egypt during Biblical times. Joseph's
interpretation of ancient Egypt influences the audience's perception of the country in that time.
Joseph's first "performance" was in March of 1968 at St. Paul's Junior school in London England Originally composed for a school choir as a 25
minute piece. It was the first piece of work by Lloyd Webber and Rice to be performed publicly. It has since been revised performed multiple times
at various schools and theatres (Playbill). Following Lloyd Webber's success with Jesus Christ Superstar, the show had its first professional
performance at the Edinburgh Festival of 1972 by the Young Vic company. After it was not deemed to be very successful in the UK, the music and
lyrics were revised again, adding more characters and songs. And then the script finally became solidified (more or less) to the version we know of
today (The Encyclopedia of the Musical Theatre Vol.2). Its first Broadway production was on November 18, 1981 at the Entermedia Theatre in New
York City (Gänzl). Although it technically premiered in 1981, it is considered part of the 1982

Broadway musicals: The Portrayal of Women through the Decades
Broadway was one of the first forms of entertainment. Before there were television programs, or movies, there was Broadway. Broadway originated in
New York in 1750, when actor–manager Walter Murray built a theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street. A musical would show about once
every weekend. The shows were very male based, and would commonly show a relationship between young boys and their fathers. Women were
slowly integrated into Broadway, and as society changed its point of view on women, so did theatre.
The first strictly female–based shows were released in the 1950's. These musicals attracted more female–based audience members and ticket sales rose
exponentially. Musicals such as The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady showed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is already showing how women and men were "supposed" to act in that time period. It showed that men were superior and that a young woman was
supposed to be aloof, and not bold.
Males have a significantly easier time training and controlling their voices than women do, which is part of the reason that female–based musicals
became so popular. "On Broadway, although some female roles are narrow, demeaning, passive, or long
–suffering and convey weakness, the performer
sings with incredible strength. Listening to the female singing voice is a more complicated phenomenon. Visually, the character singing is the passive
object of our gaze. But aurally, she is resonant; her musical speech drowns out everything in range. A singer, more than any other musical performer,
stands before us having wrested the composing voice away from the lyricist and composer who wrote the score." Said Musicologist Carolyn Abbate
(Wolf, p.31)
Furthermore, the complexity of the female voices both alone, in duet, and group, has influenced the creation and production of numerous female–based
musicals over the decades. When thinking of musical theatre, the most common idea is "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, and boy eventually gets the girl
in the end." This situation is most commonly referred to as, "The original story" The main reasons for this stereotype are the musicals produced and
shown in the 1950's– 70's. When looking at the story line of more than

The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is integral to the overall narrative of the Israelites' descent into Egypt. It also tells us that
anyone can make his or her dreams come true. His progression from dream interpreting shepherd to minister of Egypt is one of the most elaborate
stories in the Bible, the Book of Genesis. Joseph was born in a family of 12 boys and Joseph was his father's favorite. Jacob wanted to show everyone
how much he loved Joseph and decided to give him coat of many colors. The coat of colors was a prestige gift in Canaan, because it was very

the sun, moon, and sky with eleven stars bowing down before a bright golden star. He knew that someday he was meant for more things to come that
are powerful in his life. This was God's way to show him that he will be great someday and be a ruler. With the combination of knowing Joseph is
Jacob's favorite son and Joseph's dreams of being one that he may be a ruler of some kind, the 11 brothers become very jealous. One day, they

Phantom of the Opera Review
Phantom of the Opera is the longest running musical to date and has become one of the most beloved and well known musicals on Broadway. The
musical was inspired and loosely based on the characters and the story of the book Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. This CD is the original
London cast which means that this recording is with the first cast that ever preformed the musical with the actors that created the parts. The musical
was written and composed by Andrew Lloyd Webberwho is one of the most famous musical composers and has composed some of the most well
loved musicals of the last fifty years. Webber created incredible and emotional music for Phantom of theOpera that set this musical apart from all the
others. One thing that makes Phantom of the Opera a unique musical experience is because it does not try to fit into one genre and does not try to be
too modern. This makes it unique because most of today's musicals are trying to be more pop culture. The Phantom of the Opera manages to stay in
the time period where the story takes place but weaves in modern comedy and rock music. The most obvious way that this is done is with the main
theme of the musical. The pounding of the organ is one of the most well–known themes in musical theatre and it is reminiscent of rock music with the
guitar but it is different than rock because it is an organ not a guitar. There are many other contrasts between old and new in the musical. One contrast
is of musical and opera. The

"The Phantom of the Opera: Behind the Mask"
When many people think of The Phantom of the Opera, they think of the popular Broadway musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. However,
Webber had another vision in mind, a film adaptation of his beloved musical that he announced back in 1989. In 2004 that dream became a reality
when it was released for the world to enjoy. Still, some lovers of the live performance argue that the film doesn't have the same feel or emotion that
one would get from the play. Although, this adaption doesn't give the audience the feeling of a live performance, it does give one a unique experience
in its direction, music, acting and special effects that no other form can achieve.

Yet, clue number six had stumped the white team.
The red team already figured it out!
Richie was puzzled, but began to scheme.
Then suddenly! He went over to Annie!
Richie smiled so sweet and asked so nicely.
Richie convinced her to reveal the clue!
Now both teams were even again.
But Annie was ¬¬¬¬excluded; the red team betrayed.
Clue seven, clue eight, now to an obstacle.
Clue number nine was atop the pine.
White team and red team both needed to climb.
Branch one, two and three. Up, Up, Up the tree.
Richie looked back, Clare was slowing them down!
Richie was annoyed, and began to scheme.
Richie pushed Hasti, who grabbed on to Clare.
They both straight out of the tree.
Eddy thought that his 'accident' was all his fault.
His guilt led to tears, and they led to shame,
And so young Eddy was out of the game.
Richie now led to ensure victory.
He was allowed the dogs for company.
But these were Eddy's dogs.
And they would only get in Richie's way.
So Richie hid them and told

Phantom Of The Opera Essay
The Phantom of the Opera directed by Joel Schumacher is the 2004 adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical of the same name. The
Phantom of the Opera stars Gerard Butler as the Phantom, Emmy Rossum as Christine DaaГ©, and Patrick Wilson as Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny,
who are embroiled in a love triangle. The film was met with generally mixed and negative reviews: Schumacher's use of mise–en–scГЁne,
cinematography and editing, as well as symbolism contributes to the production of The Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom of the Opera centers on the
Paris Opera House which has over time become the Phantom's domain. Upon the news that the opera house has been bought and is under new
ownership, the Phantom demands that the new owners ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then sequesters her and she willingly follows him into his underworld lair. Christine appears mesmerized and intrigued by the Phantom and does
nothing to escape, but rather sees him as her "angel of music." Trouble begins when the opera company refuses to give in to the Phantom's demands
and Raoul and Christine fall in love. The Phantom's jealous rage endangers the opera company, as well as the lives of Raoul and Christine. His final
demand is finally met when the opera company agrees to put on the opera, "Don Juan", which he was written specifically for Christine. During "Don
Juan's" performance, the Phantom infiltrates the production and kidnaps Christine one last time. Raoul risks his life chasing after the Phantom and
Christine. In the final showdown between Raoul and the Phantom, Raoul is overtaken by the Phantom and Christine must choose which man she wants
to be with. In the end, the Phantom lets Christine and Raoul go. Though it is not shown that they lead a happy life together, it is implied that they got
married and had children as the final scene depicts Raoul visiting his wife, Christine's, grave (Schumacher). Symbolism plays a major role in The
Phantom of the Opera. Christine is represented as being young and innocent. She is often depicted wearing white. Unlike her predecessor, Carlotta,
Christine does not appear to be interested in material possessions. Much like the Phantom, Christine is an orphan

The Wiz Movie Research Paper
"The Wiz" Still Easing on Down the Road By the time Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Lena Horne and Richard Prior took the Wiz to
the silver screen in 1977, the show had already been a Tony Award
–winning Broadway hit. In fact, the 1975 "Wizard of Oz" adaptation was still
running strong on Broadway when the movie was released. It would be moved to the Broadway Theater in May of 1977 where it would spend the
next four years providing nearly 2,000 performances. Over the next few decades, the movie would earn the moniker "cult classic". Almost 40 years
later, on December 3, 2015, another all–black cast took a trip to Oz and followed the Yellow Brick Road all the way to Emerald City. The show would
combine the best of the stage and

Why Was Theatre So Popular In American Theatre

  • 1. Why Was Theatre So Popular In American Theatre Back In Time Theatre has a huge effect on people not only in America but also London. The British Invasion has really shaped on how theatre is in the present day. When the british invasion came to be this was when the american director– choreographer era just ended. Around this time is when musical theatre really began to plummet. One of the reasons why theatre was in such a bad place at this time and was not popular was because the shows that were on the stage were not a success. Some of the shows at this time were Rags, Smile, and Nick and Nora. Because of the failure in shows, the runnings on broadway dropped dramatically. Within 10 years the amount of shows running went from 32 to only 19. It can be assumed that because the amount of shows dropped that attendance dropped as well. No one wanted to go watch theatre anymore so the attendance dropped from 6 million people to 4.6 million people. Theatre was so low right before the british invasion started. America welcomed the invasion because theatre was not thriving at all. If London was successful in theatre there, that would mean more tourists would travel to New York and make it more successful there as well, which it did. Theatre... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The more shows put on the more people would sell and rent props help make the sets, or just be involved in theatre somehow. Having more available jobs for people is never a bad thing. The thriving of broadway once again has helped many people be able to provide for their families and be able to put food on the table for them. This also ties in on what was happening in America during this time period. Ronald Reagan just became president. Ronald Reagan was able to bring a new control in social, economic and political life. When he did so he was able to help create more job, in the similar way that because theatre began to become popular again it created more jobs as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Raul, Vicomte de Chagny recognizes in the new diva his childhood friend and recalls his feelings to her. But Christine denies the fact of acquaintance with him. Her attitude shocked Raul. Later on the same day Phantom of the Opera kidnaps Christine and keeps her in his house on the band of the underground lake bellow the Opera. There he reveals one of his identities to her. In the novel Opera Ghost Eric is shown as a complicated and controversial person. We learn him not only as a musician but also as a traveller and an engineer. In the novel only three characters have seen the Phantom of the Opera close enough. They are Christine, Raul and Persian. In the movie Opera Ghost is almost depersonalized. • 3. Differences Between The Book And The Phantom Of The Opera Thesis Statement: Gaston Leroux (1910) novel is more in depth as compared to Joel Schumacher (2004) movie adaption of the novel. Gaston Leroux has described and built his characters in a way that it has ranged from a spoilt prima donna Carlotta, to the mysterious Persian from Erik's past that has been commemorated by numerous memorable adaptations. However regardless of this, it has always managed to perpetuate a strong impact to all literature readers with its remarkable element of Gothic horror literature that feeds off a deeper and darker version than any version that follows. The other adaptations were Das Phantom der Opera, which is also known as Das Gespent im Opernhaus produced during 1916 in Germany as a silent drama film, this is known as a lost film due to no known copies existing at this time. ART CRITICISM PAPER ART CRITICISM PAPER "The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter" by Elizabeth Louise Vigee–LeBrun In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700's and the early 1900's. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee–Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition. "The Grafin von Scholfeld with her Daughter" is oil on canvas art piece painted in 1793. The little girl's dress gives the texture of lightness and seems like airy fabric that would be thin and translucent. The time in this piece is very accurate of the late 1700's and when viewing it, the time seems classic. The emphasis of this piece is mainly the mother and the daughter, however when looking at them you are drawn into looking at their realistic eyes. The eyes seem like the focal point which draws the viewer in to the picture. The relationship in the painting between the mother and daughter give it a definite asymmetrical balance and maybe a little radial balance. A radial balance because of their eyes being the central focus, then the faces, then the holding of each other, then where they are placed on the canvas, and then the bench and the landscape. The colors used by the painter, also creates balance with in the picture. The wine colored dress of the mother, red sash of the daughter's dress, ruby lips, and the rosy cheeks give a warm feeling to the central focus of the mother and daughter. The cool color of the sky is the same as the women's eyes as well as the trees and green on the mother's dress. These balances give unity or a unifying feeling to the painting, especially between the mother and daughter. The Music That Transformed a Hidden Classic into Modern Culture Le FantГґme de l'OpГ©ra, a fictional novel published in 1911, by Gaston Leroux, puts the reader right in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House in the late 1800s (Cox: Oxford Reference). An adventure, involving tragic love and gothic elements, surrounds a detective's search to reveal the mystery of the "Phantom of the Opera". The detective acts as the narrator who reflects on his investigations of the Paris Opera House through allusions and the tragedies that occur throughout the novel's entirety. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She argues that adaptations are a continuous development of culture and that "with adaptations, we seem to desire the repetition as much as the change"; however, she argues that a work is transformed (Hutcheon 9). Her valuable points about the rationale of adaptation work is the underlying argument in the continuation of making original works more valuable and in The Phantom of the Opera, music does just that. When the musical was adapted from the novel, it heavily maintained the idea that music was the central theme within the novel's allusions and metaphors. Music is an emotionally charged realm and can evoke the most powerful of emotions if done well. The original text of the novel is merely highlighted with the use of the composed soundtrack by Webber. Webber's adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most ideal examples of this phenomenal skill of leaving an original story completely rendered into a product seeping with art. It is important to note when referencing adaptations that the first definition that appears when one looks up "adaptation" into the Oxford Reference dictionary are a variety of definitions that range from just about everything from an adaptation of a book to an adaptation of a recipe. They may not know where their next meal is coming from or how they are going to afford a car payment. Many will take money and not even question it. They know what they are doing is wrong and they are putting themselves and the school in jeopardy. At the time the reward is worth the risk they are taking. There are many other cases happening across the country that no one knows about. It is interesting how Foster came out and said how he felt that it was not a big deal and that he did not think he was doing anything wrong. He would fall into a large percent of college athletes that feel it is unfair for them to not see anything from all the revenue they bring in. Many will argue that college athletes do not need to be compensated because they are student–athletes; and the key word for them is student. One argument against paying college athletes is that they are basically receiving a free education from a top school. A four–year scholarship will cover everything a student–athlete needs. They set rock music to the story of Jesus Christ which was a big success. Then they wrote Jeeves in 1975 and Rice did not want anything to do with it. That's when Alan Ayckbourn wrote the lyrics. Then Webber and Rice came together again and wrote "Evita" a story about the first lady of Argentina married to Juan Peron. This was also a huge success. Then they broke up for time to "recharge". Rice said. This is when Webber created the musical "Cats". When Webber was a child he read, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T.S. Eliot. This would soon be turned into the musical "Cats". All of the lyrics were there, he wanted to add some flavor to them, and so he called on Rice and Trevor Nunn to help. Nunn used to direct the shows that Webber proposed. Webber chose Nunn's lyrics over Rice's, thus "Cats" was born in 1981. He soon divorced his wife Sara Hugill and moved on to the actress Sarah Brightman in 1984. Later Brightman was cast as the female role in "The Phantom of the Opera" as Christine Daae. When I was the age of only fourteen I received the honor of performing the musical for the first time, although I had to learn a great deal about the script for that performance, the history behind The Phantom of the Opera is not clear to me. So I started my research their tied to the original piece. Phantom of the opera.com gave a timeline that had the background, explaining that the original piece was published in 1911 by Gaston Leroux. Del was worried about Rich removing him from his will taking with it the only life he knew and treasured. He figured the only way to fix the problem was to kill. (People nowadays!) Anyway, he had been learning and mastering the skill of mind control and decided to test it out on a fellow who would be the least likely to be suspected. Dee! During this time, a meeting had been occurring between Hugh, Justin, and Dee. Dee needed help to debug the system but what Justin planned was to steal the whole program. Justin went to talk to Rita at the same time that Dee took a 'bathroom break'. She made sure that H.T. was preoccupied and put on gloves to leave no trace behind. Mind you, she was being manipulated by Del the whole time. Before the murder, Rita had drugged Rich so that Justin was able to steal the program. Her reason for betrayal was because he had been the one to break it off, leaving her the one with hurt feelings. I guess that never settles well with ferocious sirens like her. Dee came in soon after Rita and finished up the job by strangling Rich with a mouse cord and punching the daylight out of him. She drops the gloves underneath Hugh's bed and returns to the meeting. It continues until everyone has returned to their places. Dee, having lost all memory of her actions goes to ask a question from Rich. She screams and everyone runs over. • 12. Story Of An Hour Satire There is immense power in well–written satire: it can make its audience laugh with witticisms rooted in truths, even make them think differently about any subject, mundane or critical. Bad satire, however, emphasizes all the wrong parts: it gets its facts wrong, goes off track, and closes its audience's minds to any new way of thinking it might present. Li Chongyue and Wang Lihua's article would be bad satire, a bad argument. Chongyue and Lihua's "A Caricature of an Ungrateful and Unfaithful Wife" distorts Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through imaginative exaggeration of character interaction, emotional ignorance, and its simplification of the characters and the text. Firstly, there is no evidence in the text of "The Story of an Hour" to suggest that Louise Mallard has been at all unfaithful to her husband. One sentence within the article suggests that some readers have sensed an extramarital affair–or an attempted one–between Mrs. Mallard and Richards, which, given its inclusion, the authors appear to agree with (Chongyue and Lihua). However, Richards is mentioned by name in the text of the short story three times: at the beginning when he confirmed the news of Brently Mallard's death, toward the end when he awaited Josephine and Louise at the bottom of the staircase, and when he tries to block Louise from seeing Brently Mallard alive as he walks in the door (Chopin). There is a divide between those with money and those without. Wealth bought power and privilege, which allowed Potiphar to buy Joseph when he was sold into slavery. The Narrators spoke of that ease about the Baker and Butler, "Both in the doghouse for doing their thing" (Joseph, 48). Joseph was innocent of the crimes he was accused of, but it didn't matter, because Potiphar's Wife accused him and she had the power over him. Political Environment The patriarchy in both Canaan and Egypt holds the key to power. Jacob was allowed to bestow powers, privileges, and gifts to those he wanted. He chose to give special treatment to Joseph because his mother was his favorite wife. In Egypt, Pharaoh held all the power. He would get what he wanted or else someone would pay a price. As a storyteller myself, I always try my best to utilize the many different approaches to telling a story. Whether through music, books, poetry, drawings, films, etc. I've tried them all. I've always been fascinated by other people's stories. I will always try to retell them myself. Most of the time I usually just talk about them. But once in awhile, I like to use what I think is the most powerful form of storytelling, music. Music has been part of my life for a while now. Throughout middle school and high school I was in both Band and Choir. And throughout these years I come to understand the power that music has with storytelling. Especially in films, I've grown up watching films and they have impacted my life greatly. The films, "Jesus Christ Super Star," "La La Land," and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" have a musical score that expresses a story better than any words could ever express. I grew up Catholic, just as my family grew up Catholic. Every year during the season of Lent, around the time of Holy Week, my family and I would honor Jesus's final days with many traditions. Tradition such as attending mass, receiving palms, having our feet washed and of course watching the 1974 classic "Jesus Christ Superstar." The children's version, meant for 8 to 12 year–olds, is the most like the original 1920s Gaston Leroux version. One of the few things that is changed, other than the overall abbreviation of the novel, is simplification of the language. For example, Erik begins describing himself by saying, "I was ugly. Worse than ugly"3. This straightforward, childlike language puts the novel at the preteen reading level while preserving Erik's crucial description. The Phantom of the Opera is the most popular book in Random House Publishing's youth "Bullseye Chiller" series, above other tales of vampires, werewolves, mummies, and witches4. The reviews from the critics are very different. Although Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera has not generally been highly commended by critics, many would agree that there are several elements that prove Leroux to be a talented writer. One of the strongest elements in the novel is the narrator's voice. The last theme is innocence. "The phantom's anger with the society that has rejected him is balanced in this novel with the simple innocence of the love between Christine Daae and Raoul de Chagny" (Newark). The narration of a novel is also any important part of a novel. It is based on the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors from the Torah. The majority of the musical takes place inancient Egypt during Biblical times. Her leadership was characterized primarily by her effort to get to know every single one of her diverse cast mates. • 30. Broadway musicals: The Portrayal of Women through the Decades Broadway was one of the first forms of entertainment. Before there were television programs, or movies, there was Broadway. Broadway originated in New York in 1750, when actor–manager Walter Murray built a theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street. A musical would show about once every weekend. The shows were very male based, and would commonly show a relationship between young boys and their fathers. Women were slowly integrated into Broadway, and as society changed its point of view on women, so did theatre. The first strictly female–based shows were released in the 1950's. These musicals attracted more female–based audience members and ticket sales rose exponentially. Musicals such as The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady showed ... It showed that men were superior and that a young woman was supposed to be aloof, and not bold. Males have a significantly easier time training and controlling their voices than women do, which is part of the reason that female–based musicals became so popular. "On Broadway, although some female roles are narrow, demeaning, passive, or long –suffering and convey weakness, the performer sings with incredible strength. Listening to the female singing voice is a more complicated phenomenon. Visually, the character singing is the passive object of our gaze. But aurally, she is resonant; her musical speech drowns out everything in range. A singer, more than any other musical performer, stands before us having wrested the composing voice away from the lyricist and composer who wrote the score." Said Musicologist Carolyn Abbate (Wolf, p.31) Furthermore, the complexity of the female voices both alone, in duet, and group, has influenced the creation and production of numerous female–based musicals over the decades. When thinking of musical theatre, the most common idea is "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, and boy eventually gets the girl in the end." This situation is most commonly referred to as, "The original story" The main reasons for this stereotype are the musicals produced and shown in the 1950's– 70's. • 31. Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Short Story The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is integral to the overall narrative of the Israelites' descent into Egypt. It also tells us that anyone can make his or her dreams come true. His progression from dream interpreting shepherd to minister of Egypt is one of the most elaborate stories in the Bible, the Book of Genesis. Joseph was born in a family of 12 boys and Joseph was his father's favorite. Jacob wanted to show everyone how much he loved Joseph and decided to give him coat of many colors. The coat of colors was a prestige gift in Canaan, because it was very expensive back then. Joseph had a dream of 11 sheaves of corn that turned and bowed down to a golden sheaf of corn another dream that was about the sun, moon, and sky with eleven stars bowing down before a bright golden star. He knew that someday he was meant for more things to come that are powerful in his life. This was God's way to show him that he will be great someday and be a ruler. With the combination of knowing Joseph is Jacob's favorite son and Joseph's dreams of being one that he may be a ruler of some kind, the 11 brothers become very jealous. One day, they decided that they wanted to kill him, but before they get the chance, they came across a couple of Ishmaelite's on their way to Egypt. They decided to sell Joseph as a slave. • 32. Phantom of the Opera Review Phantom of the Opera is the longest running musical to date and has become one of the most beloved and well known musicals on Broadway. The musical was inspired and loosely based on the characters and the story of the book Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. This CD is the original London cast which means that this recording is with the first cast that ever preformed the musical with the actors that created the parts. The musical was written and composed by Andrew Lloyd Webberwho is one of the most famous musical composers and has composed some of the most well loved musicals of the last fifty years. Webber created incredible and emotional music for Phantom of theOpera that set this musical apart from all the others. One thing that makes Phantom of the Opera a unique musical experience is because it does not try to fit into one genre and does not try to be too modern. This makes it unique because most of today's musicals are trying to be more pop culture. The Phantom of the Opera manages to stay in the time period where the story takes place but weaves in modern comedy and rock music. The most obvious way that this is done is with the main theme of the musical. The pounding of the organ is one of the most well–known themes in musical theatre and it is reminiscent of rock music with the guitar but it is different than rock because it is an organ not a guitar. There are many other contrasts between old and new in the musical. One contrast is of musical and opera. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Phantom Behind The Opera "The Phantom of the Opera: Behind the Mask" When many people think of The Phantom of the Opera, they think of the popular Broadway musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. However, Webber had another vision in mind, a film adaptation of his beloved musical that he announced back in 1989. In 2004 that dream became a reality when it was released for the world to enjoy. Still, some lovers of the live performance argue that the film doesn't have the same feel or emotion that one would get from the play. It is possibly she even upstage the talented Sarah Brightman with her portrayal of Christine. On the other hand, her counterpart Raoul, who was played by Patrick Wilson was not as successful as the swashbuckling hero. Gerald Butler played the phantom and he did this with ease, even though at the time of its release he didn't hold any stardom. His voice was manly, seductive and he hits some high notes that one wouldn't expect from this ruggedly handsome man. The only actress who didn't sing was Minnie Driver, who played the part of the Carlotta, but she does sing the only new song Webber composed in the credits.
