Establish in Vietnam for more than 15 years
with 6 stores and 39 places to process Nike
products ( 9 factories to produce shoes and
30 to produce sportwears)

 Occupation safety and health act (OSHA)













Unhygienic work condition:
77% of workers breathed poisonous air, and the toxic fumes
at up to 177 times the Vietnamese legal limit
Toxic solvents and glues used in manufacturing caused
dizziness, nausea, respiratory ailments among workers.

Exploitation of labor
Force to work over the legal overtime limit almost everyday
(about 65h/week)
104 workers under 18 years of age,
Monthly salary( around $40) insufficient for survival
In 10/2007 and 3/2008, 2 strikes of workers










Workplace violence:
Workers were subjective to verbal and physical abuse by
managers.
In 1997, a female worker was fainted because of hitting by a
supervisor.
Women were forced to kneel down with their hand up for 25
minutes
Women complained sexual harassment by foreign supervisors
Worker had no independent union to raise their issues

Raise campaigns to protest Nike’s
products across 10 countries, and expand in
US and Europe.


1998, All Nike shoe factories met the U.S.
OSHA’s standards in indoor air quality



Results : Decrease air pollution and workplace hazards
12/1998, nose and throat diseases decreased from 86% in
1997 to 18% in 1998
1999, 85% of workers considered the work conditions as safe



1999, implemented “Code of Conducts”








Aim to protect workers’ rights and strengthen accountability
& transparence
Workers awared of their rights & chanced to access basic
education ( 2001, 85% workers offered training & education)










Regular workplace inspection ( SHAPE tests
periodic by external safety & health specialists)
Material safety data sheet to provide infomation
on chemical used
2000-2004, establish Labor Union in all
factories, with 100% workers signed labor
contract.
Coordinate with an international
organization, namely the White House Apparel

To train employees about the environment, health, safety based on
