Guidelines for exercising children safely WHAT TO DO WHEN EXERCISING IN HEAT Reduce the intensity of activities that exceed 15 minutes Restrain intensity of exercise programs and increase gradually over time. A recommendation time of 10-14 days. If this isn't possible decrease the time of the activity Make sure children are hydrated 20-30 minutes before strenuous activity Clothing should be lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate evaporation of sweat. Training should not be encouraged nor should children be apart of road-running events Children there are 12 and under should run no more than 800m (half mile) Any increase should be introduced gradually.
