Introduction Benjamin Franklin was a very important colonist in the Revolutionary War era. He was
mainly known for being a Founding Father with many inventions and contributions to the founding
of the United States of America; he had helped write the Declaration of Independence, U.S.
Constitution, and the Articles of Confederation, also he helped form the Treaty of Paris, drafted into
the Second Continental Congress and performed the kite and key experiment fueling the flame for
his interest in electricity. He had lived in Boston, Massachusetts (1706–1718), New York (1718–
1721), London, England (1724–1726) and Paris, France (1776–1785) for a short period of time, but

The Issue Of Child Labor Laws
The United States of America has always been deeply ideologically split on the idea of child labor.
On the one side, many people believe that children benefit from long hard hours at work because it
prepares them for the real world unlike the ability of school. Along with the growth of the child,
they also believe that it would create large economical growth throughout the nation. Among the
many people that believe this are two of hour founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin and Abraham
Lincoln. On the other side of the argument, many people feel that children are to innocent to work
for these long hours. They also tend to express how school and learning is much more vital to the
child than manual labor, for it will help them much more in the long run. For example, in U.S.
Supreme Court Case, Prince v. Massachusetts, the court defended child labor laws based on these
exact reasons. The question as to which of these opinions is more valid is still commonly
contemplated to this very day. In my opinion, the child should not be forced to work if they would
rather spend their time studying, however a child that wants to work should not be lawfully unable

Moving to the new world was like escaping to an "asylum" for those who sought religious freedom
(Paine 324). Paine also believed that we would be allies with the rest of Europe if we broke out ties
with England. American trade suffered every time Europe had a war that involved England (Paine
325). Although Thomas Paine had great thoughts and ideas, it wasn't until Thomas Jefferson helped

By acting in this manner the individual pays attention to the external things. While Epictetus
believes we have no control, it seems that we may have some control. We have control over our
actions, and our actions can influence these external things. In this case the care and sympathy, have
an effect on the man. While no one can directly control things that are not their actions, they still

things that Epictetus believes we can not influence.

effort to control these things. A person does not just stop paying any attention to their body because
they cannot influence the time it takes to heal from an injury. While people do not always have
direct control over their body, that alone is not sufficient to say it should be ignored. If someone
took this Epictetian view that the body cannot be controlled, then they would have no reason to care
for their body. Some things like, disease or injury cannot always be controlled but the body should

hadn't gained enough support amongst the Americans for Benjamin to force a vote. So, it can be

views. Franklin sent in many essays to his brother portraying a middle–aged woman under the name
of Silence Dogood. He brought up many controversial issues such as schooling at Harvard. Once
James finally figured out that Silence Dogood was no one other than his own sixteen year old

Chapter One: The Duel After finishing this chapter, I thought it was quite odd that he didn't explain
what happened before the duel first. Instead Ellis could have gave more info of maybe something
that could backup our knowledge of the American Revolution. But, it also could have just been a
way to make someone more interested because we first learn that Hamilton gets shot and after
knowing that we want to know WHY Burr shot Hamilton. But Ellis hints that the Founding Fathers
had harsh expectations for each other and they all had lots of honor to defend such as Hamilton; he
did not plan to oppose Burr, but Hamilton still went to meet Burr. Then as it said in the start of the
chapter. The consequences given to Burr were worse than the ones given to Hamilton –which was
death–. This was a private matter between two Founding Fathers, and they tried their best to keep it
private by doing things such as being in a private place or making all people nearby turn away so
they could not be witnesses. But it was probably quite hard for them to keep this "private" matter
away from the public, even with all of these precautions. Later in the chapter we learned that the
Founding Fathers were afraid of breakdown of the federal government and The Duel was a display

One of her visitors during a quarter sessions was Gold Selleck Silliman, a renowned lawyer and

at several different locations and thus missed out on several jobs as a lawyer. Although Mary did her
best to manage the farm in his absence, it suffered as well. Because of his political position,

invaded Virginia (Blumrosen & Blumrosen, 2006). About five thousand and twenty thousand slaves

throughout Judges and 1 Samuel, God is shown to be the same God over his people.
From the start of Judges, war is a prevalent theme. This theme is present in the first verse when the

He argues that a democratic system based on continual elections and rights of the people protected
by a written constitution would be more beneficial to society. To strengthen the concept of
democracy, Paine speaks of a hypothetical society brought up in an isolated part of the world, away
from other inhabitants. This supposed society represented the first people. Thomas Paine claims that
some of its people will have many accomplishments other will not; thus through hunger, disease,
misfortune and death it is inevitable that the people will set up some form of government that
"...will establish a common interest with every part of the community, they will mutually and

On October 19, 1781, the British General, Lord Cornwallis is forced to retreat to a the Virginian
peninsula Yorktown. The French Navy surrounds the peninsula with ships, while the Americans
soldiers chase the British by foot. Cornwallis is forced to surrender and the Americans win the

Causes of the American Revolution
The Boston Massacre was an encounter on March 5, 1770, that was five years before the American
Revolution between British troops and a group of citizens of Boston that were then in the
Massachusetts Bay Colony. British troops were quartered in the city to discourage demonstrations.
As a result of constant harassment by the citizens, a squad of British soldiers that had been struck by
snow and ice balls with rocks inside thrown during a demonstration, fired into the crowd, killing
five men. The eight soldiers and their commanding officer were tried for murder and were defended
by John Adams, later president of the United States, and Josiah Quincy. Two of the soldiers were

declared guilty of manslaughter, and the others, including the officer, were acquitted. The incident
was skillfully exploited by the American patriot Samuel Adams to create anti–British sentiment in
the colonies. After the incident the patriots of Massachusetts Bay were more and more

Mary Rowlandson And Benjamin Franklin
Every colonist that came to America had their own perceptions of its inhabitants. The majority of
these people believed the Native Americans were savages because their culture differed from the
colonists. To the colonists, everything needed to be proper. The way they dressed, whether or not
they went to church, or how they raised their children needed to be up to code. If not, their fellow
colonists looked differently at them. The natives were entirely different. Their goal was simply to
survive, and they were conducting survival the best way they knew how to. The differences between
the two cultures led to many severe problems. Mary Rowlandson and Benjamin Franklin had two
entirely different views of the Native Americans, based upon their encounters with them.
Mary Rowlandson believed the Native Americans were savage, blood–thirsty creatures that were
either going to kill or be killed. In her story, she supports her claim by using vivid imagery of a
major event that took place during her lifetime. A very interesting quote from Rowlandson's
literature is "It is a solemn sight to see so many Christians lying in their blood, some here, and some
there, like a company of sheep torn by wolves, all of them stripped naked by a company of hell–
hounds, roaring, singing, ranting, and insulting, as if they would have torn our very hearts out"
(Rowlandson). This quote uses an incredible amount of imagery and allows the reader to see just
how Rowlandson feels about the natives.

One of her visitors during a quarter sessions was Gold Selleck Silliman, a renowned lawyer and
colonel of the colonies' 4th regiment. Mary soon married him and moved to his home in Fairfield.
Their marriage came almost immediately under turmoil. Silliman had been called into military duty
at several different locations and thus missed out on several jobs as a lawyer. Although Mary did her
best to manage the farm in his absence, it suffered as well. Because of his political position,
Silliman was kidnapped by British enemies in May 1779. Despite several appeals to the governor,
he was not freed for nearly a year. Once back, Silliman had to be careful as enemies still were
looking to recapture him. He petitioned to the assembly to receive part of his pay from the time he
was detained "since all my Trouble came by means of my being an Officer in their Service." He was
turned down. Silliman handled a large amount of public money which he distributed to the colonels
of the regiments for recruitment purposes and for payment of soldiers' wages. Overwork had made
him careless about taking receipts. The state comptroller chose to take a rigid position and bestowed
a claim of eighteen hundred pounds against Silliman. This was the ultimate discouragement and
eventually all the money troubles had mounted a pressure that accelerated his death.
After Silliman's death, Mary was left with numerous debts to settle. She was advised to declare the
estate insolvent.

The acts also instituted the need to enforce mercantilist policies in the Americas. The Sugar Act was
passed to place a regulation on trade in the colonies to indirectly tax tea (one of the most demanded
products in the Americas). Another act that passed was the Stamp Act. This was the first direct tax
on colonial peoples. They responded to this with the plea "no taxation without representation". This
was a saying that meant the British could not rightfully institute taxes on the colonists because they

Frederick Douglass vs. Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin had an easier route to success than
Frederick Douglass in my opinion. Franklin was provided with a school and came from a nice
family while Douglass on the other hand had to deal with slavery and other issues. The goals or the
things that Benjamin Franklin did were for the whole world or the economy but the majority of the
things that Douglass did deal with black people, slavery, and black rights. Those two came from

He is his father's fifteenth child and he is the youngest son. His father had him put into grammar
school when he was only eight years old because he liked to read. He said "my father intending to
devote me as the Tithe of his sons to the services of the church" (Franklin 252). This is part of a
tradition where they give their tenth part of his income to the church and that happen to be Benjamin
Franklin. Franklin moved around a lot either because of a new job to help the family or there was a
conflict with someone else in the family. Although he went to school and grammar school, he was

When he was twelve he had to go work for his brother until he was twenty one, during that time he

printing but he would not let people know who the author was. His writings kept getting approved
but one got his brother thrown into jail for not revealing the author of a political piece. After that he
