Can Oversleeping
be Harmful?
Much research has been conducted on sleep deprivation, but an
overlooked topic is its counterpart, oversleeping
(http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/guide/physical-side-
effects-oversleeping) . What many individuals fail to realize is that
overindulging in sleep can have various detrimental health effects
as well. These side effects are not immediately perceived but
given enough exposure can potentially affect a person’s health
negatively.

Similar to lacking sleep, oversleeping destroys the delicate
circadian rhythm, which is the body’s natural 24-hour cycle. This
biological clock significantly impacts a person’s behavior and
physical and mental state. Those who sleep too much often report
waking up feeling lethargic, drowsy, and are constantly fatigued.
Several medical studies have proven that oversleeping subtly
changes certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Again, there are no
immediate side effects, but these slight variations in brain function
may increase the risk for some mental disorders such as
depression and anxiety. Individuals also gain a higher potential in
acquiring lower back pain, heart disease, and diabetes.
People who find themselves oversleeping for an extended period
should immediately visit their local sleep internist. This may be
