Relationship Between Audiences And Films
Unit 24 Assignment 4
Audiences and Films
The BBFC has commissioned me to undertake research as part of a project to ascertain to what degree films can be regarded as powerful within
contemporary society. In this assignment, I will comprehensively explain the relationship between audiences and films with well explained examples. I
refer to the different sectors relating to the topic that include the following:
a)active and passive audience models
b)the preferred readings theory
c)reception theory and viewing contexts
d)your own research into the relationship between audiences and films
Active and Passive Audiences
An active audience is the opposite. An active audience can interact with the programme and tell them their views, and what they would like to see.
They can influence the outcome of the whole show.
A passive audience is an audience that has no influence over the outcome of the programme. They cannot change it in any way and it is up to the
writers to decide what happens and when.
Hypodermic Needle Model
The Hypodermic Needle Theory is one of the oldest in the field of media studies. Also known as the Magic Bullet Theory, it states that media has a
direct, complete and immediate effect on the audience. The message for the media is directly received and wholly accepted by the user. The audience
is considered to completely passive entities that are left at the mercy of the media. Media is considered to be super strong with the potential of

Audience Analysis Net Questions
1). Why is audience analysis the most important part of the writing process for technical writers? Do you agree with this idea?
Audience analysis is an important part of the writing process because the writer needs to be able to understand the needs and interests of the intended
group they are writing too. The writer will direct their writing style to the intended audience so that it is easy to understand (for customers) or direct
(often used for executives). How the message is presented will be even more effective depending on the tone used.
Answer
I agree with this because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would apply the KISS formula; Keep It Short and Simple to this type of audience. This group may have some knowledge about a product or service
however, the idea is to keep the message simple without the use of flowery words, and not burden them with too much information.
3) What are some characteristics you should know about your audience before you begin writing? Why is this important?
Answer
I believe it is important to know the gender, income level, age range, culture and marital status of your audience. Knowing these characteristics helps
a writer to understand if an audience may be interested in a product or service and how well it would sell. For example, a couple with children may
be interested in having a double stroller whereas those are not parents would not besssss. Another example is offering alcohol at a restaurant in Turkey
where it is forbidden.
4) What are some techniques you can use as a writer to make sure your audience understands what you are trying to say?

Knowing the Audience
Knowing Your Audience Paper and Communication Release
To know your audience would be an extremely significant mark at any time a company was to communicate material to a group or organization.
Knowing your audience proves to be even more significant when a company has to deal with the outcome resulting from a disaster. The disaster of the
Chilean copper mine in South America is one example of where knowing your audience was a very significant issue.
In a Chilean copper mine, a disastrous downfall in one of the shafts of the mine has left 33 miners trapped 310 meters (1017 feet) below the ground.
The outcomes of the company and their reaction to the disaster would eventually define how the world, their audience, would see them. It ... Show more

One method would be a customary issue of information to everyone. This can also be deemed as a general blanket statement. A media release letting
everybody know that all attempts to rescue the men from the mine are in progress is an example of a general blanket statement. Another method would
be communications specific to the needs of each group. Speaking with the victim's love ones and letting them know if there has been any
communication from the victims would be an example. With the information they have, the company should think through the information and let the
appropriate crowd know about the information first. In this case, the victim's families would have been right of way number one in the distribution of
information; they do not need to get an update on what was occurring on the television.
The best way to communicate to the families would be a face–to–face conference. This approach of communication let the family members know that
they are significant in the circumstances. A telephone call would be considered soulless and can make a victim feel like he or she is not vital. When it
comes to a face–to–face conference, the use of body language and tone of voice can express sympathy and care. The person delivering the news must
also proceed in this way. The mining company found that dealing with the families was the difficult complication of the accident. The company soon
discovered that many family members not even known to

Stereotypes: Why The Audience Sympathizes With Bubbles
Identifying and understanding a particular theme within a television series can be difficult, especially for a series that is as complicated as The Wire.
Viewers must form flexible analyses that requires them to navigate through a plethora of characters and storylines in order to discover a better
awareness of a specific theme. In this essay, I argue that Bubbles gives theaudience insight on the effects of substance abuse among inner city homeless
people through the audience's ability to sympathize and empathize with him. This essay will detail exactly why the audience sympathizes with
Bubbles, what storyline developments forces the audience to feel empathy for him, and how the audience's sympathies with Bubbles and what happens
to him impacts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One development being Bubbles' initial inability to cope with the attack on his friend Johnny. Seeing his friend in the hospital, Bubbles can not help
but feel powerless, angry, and sad simultaneously. Having these emotions is important to his character development because it makes him more human
than television character. Most, if not all, of the audience can empathize with feeling at least one of these emotions Bubbles felt there. Another
storyline development that pressures the audience to feel empathetic towards Bubbles is his willingness to talk to the police. After the attack on
Johnny, Bubbles wanted to get revenge so he got in contact with Detective Kimma Greggs, to become an informant trying to uncover the Barksdale
organization. Viewers can most defiantly feel emotions of empathy for Bubbles here because the majority of the audience has felt the need to take
revenge over someone who has done them wrong. Being able to identify the audience's feeling of empathy for particular storylines gives insight on the
effects of substance abuse among inner city homeless people because it makes viewers realize that pain of substance abuse is not only physical but

Talk Show Audience Analysis Essay
For this talk show host assignment, I analyzed one of my favorite hosts, Conan O'Brien. During the episode I watched, Conan interacts with his guest
and listens as they relate a personal anecdote. Conan uses excellent communication techniques by clarifying, rewording, and relaying information at
opportune moments throughout the story. Not only does this encourage the guest and help them create a cohesive timeline, it also helps enhance the
audience's understanding and helps ensure an accurate account. Conan utilized methods of communication that would enhance motivation in a client.
He asked many open ended, reflective questions that caused the guest to think deeper on their story or views. He also repeated information back to

Speech Is Good Or Bad For Audience
Many people face the feeling of fear when they have to deliver a speech in front of an audience. However, the presentation is not that frightening as
long as a speaker is familiar with strategies ,that can be employed to make a successful speech. Even if they spoke in front of an audience ,like any
mental work ,the preparation of the speech tends to be the creative process. When the speaker does this and is prepared, the audience can enjoy listening.
Talk is the most crucial measure of any oral presentation in deciding whether a speech is good or bad for the audience, in terms of ethical perspective.
Being aware of cultural diversity, an ethical speaker tends to demonstrate respect for the audience by providing them with real information and
respectful insist. Speakers should learn creative skills to better grab the audience's attention.
Speakers need many skills to speak in front of audiences. If the speaker does not practice for their presentation, that can make his or her presentation
poor. Practicing the presentation allows speakers to enjoy it and audiences as well. Presentations are not just a set of sentences or a random collection
of thoughts. A presentation contains a number of specific elements without which it would be meaningless and useless. A successful speech is
considered to be one that provides a new perspective on an older issue or topic.
Oral presentation must include an introduction, body, and lastly a strong conclusion. A challenging question and a

Adapting To The Audience Synthesis Essay
What is the purpose of a speech? To try to get information out to an audience. How can you get information out, if you can not get the audience's
attention? Being able to understand how and why connecting to the audience is an important factor to giving a good speech. When keeping your
audience in mind during a speech, it is important to know about your audience, to adapt to your audience during the speech, and to relate to your
audience in order to keep the audience intrigued the whole time.
The first step to writing any speech is finding out about the audience. Why are you giving this speech? What is it about? Who is it to? The first thing
to find out is the size of your audience. Finding out the size will put restraints on what you can and can't do. Something that normally works really
well for a large audience could potentially look really tacky and boring to a small audience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the audience seems to not be enjoying the speech, changes might have to be made. Presenting it differently, making it more enjoyable, and
interacting with the audience are different ways to relate to the audience. According to Malcom Kushner, "... putting your needs and interests ahead
of your own is a great way to make your audience relate to you." Things to self asses during the speech to see if the audience is enjoying the speech
are: is the audience looking at you? Are they responding with their facial expressions? Are they restless? Is there a lot of fidgeting? Do they laugh or
nod at appropriate times? If any of these questions were answered negatively, the solution would be to adapt with the audience to keep them intrigued.
Some ways to get a positive response to a speech would be to tell a story, ask for feedback, talk more to the audience, integrate some humor. Adapting
to the audience, by doing these simple things can help keep the audience interested in your

Hamlet What Is the Appeal to the 21 Century Audience
As people in the twenty–first century generally don't believe in ghosts and don't consider revenge a duty, why is a play like Hamlet still of interest to
film and theatre audiences?
As William Shakespeare began writing Hamlet in 1598 – at the end of the 16th century – the play which would go on to become one of his most
famous pieces of work was geared towards an audience of "churls", "groundlings" and the less–educated members of theatre–going society, just as
equally as the more educated and affluent audience members. Theatre being a relatively affordable and popular form of entertainment for the less
wealthy individuals, Shakespeare would cater as much to their tastes as he would to the 'higher society' who would attend his plays. A ... Show more

When you consider that he was following the instructions of his father's "ghost" it becomes even more blurred. It was the ghost which created the fire
inside Hamlet, the desire for revenge but also the need for revenge as a duty, to his "murdered" father. The ghost, however, has been the subject of
much debate amongst critics and readers of Hamlet, with the controversy surrounding whether the ghost is "real" as a physical element of the play, or
whether it exists simply in the mind of Hamlet. The play opens with Horatio and various watchmen alarmed that they have seen a ghostly presence,
although we don't know for sure that they have actually seen the purported ghost of the former King. This could indicate that what they saw wasn't
actually a ghost, and further evidence to suggest this could be found in the scene in which Hamlet sees the ghost but Gertrude cannot see him (Act III,
Scene IV).
Some critics, such as Jan Pick, argue that the appearance of the ghost as an actual element of the play is simply to encourage the audience to accept
Hamlet as a rational human being rather than an insane character; the inclusion of the ghost as somebody the audience (if not the other characters) can
see lends an air of authenticity to the ghost scenes, authenticity which can only exist to a modern audience in the assumption that Hamlet actually is
insane, and imagining the ghost. Still, this scenario leads the viewer down a different but

Captive Audience Analysis
Supplement Assignment: Captive Audience
Before I began managing, I spent years focusing on marketing and how I could engage customers. During this time, much of my time was spent
brainstorming strategies to pull the customer in, make them stop what they were doing, and actively listen. Collectively engaging an audience, all in one
setting, is an outreach member's dream, such as captive audience speeches. Captive audience can be easily be explained as a meeting that the listener's
onlookers have no choice but to attend. To have a captive audience, the presenter knows he/she has the listeners in a situation they are "unable to
escape" or leave. Captive audiences exist all around us, but especially popular in the workplace.

Reflection: Audience and Team Teach Essay
Reflection
For the purpose of my reflection I have chosen to use Gibbs (1988) Model of Reflection. More commonly used in the healthcare profession I have
chosen Gibbs because I find this model simple, clear and precise helping me to stay focused and make sense of my experience. Also as it includes
action planning it has helped me examine my actions in a way that perhaps they can be improved. I have also chosen to reflect separately on the
planning of the Team Teach and the Team Teach presentation.
1. Planning.

This was a new experience for all of us and an important one as the session would be evaluated as part of the course. I was feeling anxious about the
Team Teach and no doubt so were the other members of the group. I am still unsure as what really set this outburst off but have accepted more why it
might have happened.
Conclusion
I considered the impact this might have on the success of the team exercise and came to the conclusion that I had to speak with the other person at our
next meeting. I didn't want answers to why she had behaved in the way she did but neither did I want this episode to be destructive to the success of
the Team Teach.
So that is what I did. I asked her whether she wanted to put the previous week behind her and we start again.
Future Action
I would like to think that this would never happen again! I am pleased with myself in not reverting to my usual type in rushing in to 'bite back'. This
upon reflection would have been the worst thing to do as it would undoubtedly escalate the situation. And this is what I have learnt from this
experience. What I might do differently in there were to be similar incidents is to think before I act as this is always the better outcome

The Importance Of A Speech On The Audience
When making a speech, it is important that the speaker understands who their audience is. By understanding the characteristics of their listeners, the
speaker is able to tailor their speech so that it involves topics that interest the audience. The listeners will then be more attentive and interest in listening
to the message. In this Communication class, my classmates are my audience because they are the ones who will be listening and giving me feedback.
In order to make effective speeches, there are specific characteristics that I must take into consideration to make sure that I modify my speeches
according to their values and interests so that they will listen attentively.
Knowing the demographics of my audience beforehand can really help me prepare for the message of my speech. Therefore, a characteristic of my
listeners is that they are all young adults between the ages of seventeen and twenty–one. In order to appeal to this age group, I must make sure that the
topic that I choose to present must be something that this age group values so that they 'll show interest. Also, I must make sure any references or
words I use must be something that they all can understand or relate to. If I am using a reference or word that they do not understand, I have to make
sure that I include enough explanation or content for them to understand. By providing sufficient amount of explanation or examples, my listeners will
not be lost or confused.
Another characteristic of my audience

targeting medical professionals. Patient.info could have a secondary audience of medical professionals. Those individuals who might be monitoring the

about depression. Having the gender specific in these photos can help to reach specific target audience members who may not feel compelled to
seek help or afraid that they are the only ones experiencing this type of problem. The Jama network site uses a completely different type of

Ethnographic Audience Analysis
What does it take to prepare a successful speech? There are many factors to take into account when becoming an effective speaker. First, I need to
make sure that I am audience–centered. This means that I will need to "keep the audience foremost in mind at every step of speech preparation and
presentation." This means that I need to take into consideration the demographic and situational factors. Demographic audience analysis is when I
focus the audience's demographic factors such as age and gender. For example, when doing a presentation in a classroom setting, I will need to adjust
my speech to make it less formal and more humourous because the audience is students who are in their late teens. This will help gain the interest of
my classmates. When a politician does a speech for their party, they need to take into consideration that the age of the citizens, the different religions,
sexual orientations, and people's different cultural and racial background. Their presentation will be quite formal for people to take them seriously.

This means that it is important for the audience to have the knowledge and information to clearly understand the message being conveyed. In order for
this to happen, we need to stop being ethnocentric. "Ethnocentrism is a part of every culture and can affect one's ability to communicate effectively."
Values that are likely to resonate with the audience would be religion, culture, andsexual orientation. For many of us, these define our background. It
provides us strength and identity. Belonging to these groups unite people together because of a shared or similar value and state of mind. These will be
the common interests that they share. For example, in the Chinese culture, the number 'four' is referred to as death because of the similar
pronunciation. This is a shared state of mind that this culture

Athos: Three Ways Of Persuading The Audience
After viewing the PowerPoint, reading the article and watching the video. I found that there are only three ways to persuade the audience. Athos is one
the first key component in which the writer convinces the reader by its character. The writer must be knowledgeable and have respect on the different
point of views of the subject. Secondly, we have Pathos in where the writer use emotions and beliefs to persuade the audience. Emotions and beliefs
are often used to express the writer how they feel towards the claim. Finally, we have Lagos in which we use reasoning and logic to make a claim.
This is where evidences and reasons plays important part to show the audience that our claim is reasonable.

The five levels of audience you need to consider are the gatekeeper, primary, secondary, auxiliary, and watchdog audience. Gatekeepers are normally
supervisors or people higher up in the agency, however, they can also be people outside of the corporation. Gatekeepers have the authority to stop
communications to other audiences rather than sending the material on to other audiences. An example of a gatekeeper is the director of the daycare
center I work at. The primary audience is often the audience you first think of and are those who receive the communication directly and are most
likely to act from the message. This audience must be reached for your message to succeed. An example of a primary audience would be all the staff

Purpose and Audience for the AT&T Site

it is exposed to more people than a regular print document would most likely be exposed too. The fact that the document is a website and available on
the internet makes the purpose more multi–faceted based on the audience groups viewing it.
People the ages of 3 to 99 are on the internet these days. The internet is something that most people use to access information about well anything.
The AT&T sites purpose is to promote their brand, and inform people about it. Before looking at the AT&T site I wasn't aware of all of the

objectified advertising characters would appear in magazines targeted at women as well as those targeted at men" (Turner 205). This identifies the
swimsuit model as a object for the audience which is the intention for Direct TV. They used in sense of Parody for which the unappealing and habitual

audiences were significantly more likely to be gazing at objectified advertising characters compared to gender–neutral or female audiences (60%, 24%

The Use Of Personal Anecdotes On The Audience And It
It is within the human nature to be interested in other people's experiences. Whether it be with reality shows or blog posts, people like to hear
different incidents through diverse perspectives. Writers take advantage of this curiosity and try to tie experiences into their works. Many times
writers will include experiences of their own in order to convince their audience of their perspective on a subject. These personal experiences are
done in order to make an impact on the audience and it is written in a certain way to make it the most efficient for the readers. The use of personal
anecdotes is effective when details are described to the point where readers can create their own opinions, when they are used as the main topic against
an argument as opposed to being an unimportant detail, and when it has the ability to appeal to the audience's emotion.
Details within the anecdote are best described to the point where the audience can draw their own conclusions on what is happening. Description is
crucial in order to fully understand what is going on. In the case of "Blue–Collar Brilliance", written by Mike Rose, the author puts in a lot of time to
adequately describe what the significance of his experiences mean and how they contribute to the story. "Fry four on two, my mother would say as she
clipped a check onto the metal wheel. Her tables were deuces, four–tops, or six–tops according to their size..." (Rose 262). His personal encounter with

Characteristics Of Bona Fide For The Audience
Bona Fide for the Audience A step off the podium, an audience in applause, and the thoughts inside whispering, "How did I do?" when they should be
urging, "What did I give?" The good news is that the audience can indeed become the focal point of any speech if the speaker tailors their message
toward it. In this paper, I will analyze three situational characteristics and three demographics that contribute to the uniqueness of my audience, explain
why these traits matter, and briefly examine the scope of their limitations in an attempt to understand the art of the invaluable "audience–centered"
speech (Holloway, "An Exercise in Audience Analysis"). Nervousness is linear, at least for me it is. As the audience size increases, I find my
nervousness does as well. People usually have an audience of one every day in their normal conversations, sometimes that might grow to an audience of
two, three, or even four. As the audience size increases, it's only natural to realize that it's more challenging to please everyone. Sense of humor,
attention span, interests, these are all variable and unique to each audience member. How then, can this divide be reconciled? The answer is simple and
it's a technique that the education system has embedded in students' minds. Find similarities. Find common ground. (Fraleigh and Tuman, 141). One
way to ensure that the speaker is understandable and relatable to as many audience members as possible is to utilize a technique called "teaching in the
middle" (Fraleigh and Tuman, 122). This method roughly calculates the median expertise in the audience and tailors the speech toward that level. The
audience that I will speak to is large enough (approximately twenty–five) to where I certainly need to factor in this approach. It makes common ground
much more achievable, while also humbling the speaker, which makes for a friendlier relationship with the audience though they may be more
obligatorily than enthusiastically present. In the classroom setting, let's face it, there are students who are watching the clock, patiently awaiting the
end of class. Yet some teachers have the ability to capture a student's attention so well that the student might forget all about the time until the end of

used in various ways with short improvised performances. These include:
1.Audience Focus
2.Actor Focus and
3.Focus of the Scene.
The implications of these types of focus can persuade or direct the audience where to look, it can help the actor to stay in character, as well as
memorize and recite the dialogue. Finally focus can play an essential role in explaining or conveying the purpose of the scene.
In improvisational performances focus directs the audience's attention to a particular character, prop or group. This is referred to as Audience Focus

Audience Analysis : Characteristics Of My Classroom Audience
Audience Analysis:
Characteristics of my Classroom Audience
Audience analysis is described as the process of examining information about your listeners. Then using that analysis helps you adapt your message so
that your listeners will respond as you wish (Steven A. and Susan J. Beebe, 2015). It is highly important to read your audience when presenting a speech
, the first thing I noticed about my classroom audience was everyone has a good sense of humor and were open minded as to what they might be
hearing. In this paper I will be analyzing my classroom audience and describing how they might react to my speeches and what is the best way to
present my speeches. I will discuss the differences between each person and how their views will shape my speeches as a whole because
ultimately I must appeal to my audience. When I gave my first speech to the class about my life I was very nervous, I didn't know any of these
people and they didn't know me, but by the end of my speech I realized it wasn't that bad and we all get stage fright so it was okay that I was
nervous. I saw then how understanding my audience was and they won't judge my speeches as a whole based off of one mishap. While standing in
front of the class presenting I saw a lot of head nodes indicating to me that they were following along with what my life was about and they showed
interest by laughing, and by doing these thing they we unknowingly giving me feedback about how I was doing and weather they liked what they

Esa Pekka Audience
Music has a way of setting the mood or a feeling. Background music, in general, is not noted enough, whether it is at a restaurant, a ceremony, or in
an ad. Music is fundamental to the contribution of an experience. In the iPad "Esa Pekka" ad, we are able to feel this, as it is based on a composer,
Esa Pekka, using the iPad in his day to day activities. The beginning of the ad begins slowly with pauses. It causes viewers minds to start thinking and
anticipating. The creator of the ad, want to build a curiosity as the ad continues on. The visual and audio stimulation captures the interest of viewer
and hooks them into suspense to watch to the end. As the tempo grows, it abruptly stops with an accent. This is to shock viewer as it is an anomaly
to the pace of the ad. The tactic is useful as it begins the second half of the story, the real formation of a composition. Up until the scene at the snow
covered dock, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first glance, a person gets the simple purpose of the ad, but they really don't understand the depth of it. After closer examination, viewers will see
the complexity of the ad. The video moves through various scenes quickly only giving glimpses less than a few seconds long. This quick flipping of
scenes corresponds to the quick tempo of the composition. This is further seen towards the middle and end of the ad, rather than the beginning.
Viewers note, the first time around, that the new iPad can compose music. The scenes that move so quickly, that the substantial mobility of the iPad is
overlooked. There are so many scenes that the iPad is placed, it shows the composer can not go anywhere without the iPad. The complex class of the

The Media Sphere, There Exist Producers And Their Audience
Prompt 1 In the media sphere, there exist producers and their audience. Producers are responsible for encoding meaning through a set of codes
embedded in a media text, and the audience is then responsible for decoding these codes and turning otherwise unnatural correspondences between
colors, images, and sounds into something meaningful and comprehensible (Hall 130–131). Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding model is essential in
understanding the reasons why sometimes, media texts are embraced by an audience, while other times, they are criticized and interpreted in
negotiated or oppositional ways. My essay describes how the encoding/decoding model can be applied to Dove's polarizing #ChooseBeautiful
campaign. It will ultimately show how the relationship between producers and audiences in determining meaning of a media text is volatile and
dynamic due to the tension created by producers' inherent proclivity to control their audience by imposing cultural hegemonies upon them, and the
audience's innate tendency to play an active role in decoding media texts. Producers of Dove's #ChooseBeautiful campaign aimed to empower
women by encouraging them to accept the idea that being beautiful is a "personal power... all [women] have the right to embrace" ("Dove Choose
Beautiful"). This campaign was a reaction to a statistic Dove found that stated 96% of women between the ages of 18 and 64 in 20 countries did not
see themselves as beautiful ("Dove Choose Beautiful"). The company wishes its

The Four Theories Of Passive Audience Theory
Active Audience Theory
Four theorists are the contributing authors of the active research theory. These authors evolved the role audience play and their ability to actively
engage with communication medians. The idea of deconstructionism was the focus of the work of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault during the
1960's. Later in the twentieth century theorist Raymond Bauer developed The Obstinate Audience. In the early 1980's a theorist by the name of Stuart
Hall challenged the traditional theories of an audience role in the media and developed his encoding/decoding theory. Each contributed to the current
understanding of the active role audiences engage in when information is presented. In this section a brief description of the earlier theory of the
audiences as passive viewers will be presented to provide a background of the role of the audience. Next, the major theorist and their contributions to
the active audience theory will be presented. The section will end with a summary of active research theory and its contribution to communication
medians today.
Passive Audience Theory
During the early 1900's audiences were considered to be passive, an audience that merely observed events rather than actively responding to the event
in the media. During this time, several theories were developed on the media's ability to provide information to a group of people that did not think
about the information just simply receive the information. Hypodermic Needle Model by Katz &

Audience Observation Paper
I decided to visit with three people about their research poster projects. The first poster I visited was called, "These Shining Lives" by Elise Tauer.
She discussed how she helped produce the lights used in musical performances, such as plays. Elise went into detail about how important lights are in
plays because they help the audience see the performance and add effects to the acts. She discussed how different forms of lights are used for
different areas to give a mood for that area. For example, there was a house in a recent play that had pink lights showing through the window to give
the house a warm feeling. She also focused on projections used throughout the play and figured out how long each projection should be. I asked Elise

Their hypothesis that stated athletes will have a shorter reaction time when shown an image of the ball they train with was supported in this study. The
study included twenty–four participants; fourteen participants played either basketball or soccer and the other ten did not. The participants were shown
images and tested their reaction time. They discovered that athletes have a stimulus response binding, which triggers a faster response even when the
stimulus is seen in a different context. I asked what they would do different in the experiment, and they stated that they would include more
participants. Cody stated that next year he would like to expand the experiment by exploring the exact pathways of the athlete's vs non–athletes brain
pathways for the reaction time with an EEG. I learned that certain images can help shorter one's reaction time when playing sports. This is a topic that
has never crossed my mind, but I found it to be very interesting. It made me curious how Cody Isabel will expand this study next year with the

Audience Engagement And Marketing And Audience Development
When an arts organisation is balancing their artistic, financial and social objectives, the organisation is also thinking about engaging and targeting a
specific audience for whom these objectives will suit. To do this, several approaches to audience development will be taken in order to help the
organisation meet their overall aims.
In order to meet these several objectives that arts organisations set themselves, during their planning they need to take into consideration the levels of
audience engagement and use marketing and audience development approaches in order to reach these aims. Arts Council England says audience
engagement is the activity which is taken to meet needs of existing or potential audiences and to help arts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout this essay there will be case studies of campaign plans and an analysis of how the above principles have been applied in order to help an
arts organisation meet their organisational aims.
When incorporating audience engagement into any form of plan, one first needs to know if their target audience is 'available' or unavailable. Keith
Diggle says that 'Within your catchment area there is an Available Audience– aim for your Available Audience now and your Unavailable Audience
later' (29). This is an important point to reflect on when considering audience development, as an available audience has 'already experienced the
art form you and your organisation are presenting and include such experiences in their regular diet of activity' where as an unavailable audience 'is
made up of those people who do not attend events of the type you are presenting and do not feel any particular need to attend such events' (34).
When balancing social, artistic and financial objectives it is crucial to take into account your available and unavailable audiences as one needs to
ensure your objectives are targeting the most appropriate and useful audience, especially when one's objectives involve attracting a group who are
'defined by their social or economic class, or by their age or by their taste in a particular manifestation of an art

Performance Lecture: Relationship with an Audience Essay
Our performance lecture looked at the relationship with an audience and aimed to depict researched material about chosen practitioners and theatre
styles in an unconventional manner that demonstrated the techniques explored in our readings. When considering material for our performance lecture
it was decided that, by selecting such a specific topic as 'the relationship with the audience', it would be beneficial to look at the works and styles of
different practitioners. Using this method illustrated that the techniques of our chosen practitioners: Bertolt Brecht, Tim Etchells (Forced Entertainment),
Eugene Ionesco, Peter Handke and Luigi Pirandello often interconnected and influenced one another. It was found that by researching ... Show more

For instance, techniques were borrowed from Epic Theatre, Postmodern Theatre and Theatre of the Absurd. The use of placards and video projection, as
taken from Brecht and Epic Theatre, proved an engaging way to convey the material interestingly. The placards helped to conclude our presentation and
emphasise key points whilst the video material appeared to be a strongly successful element through informing the audience with enough information
about the practitioners in an engaging, humorous and memorable manner. This was often parodic, therefore linking back to the techniques of absurdist
theatre.
Linking back to the main topic our audience relationship, it was highly important that our own audience felt self–aware and were critical, not passive to
what they observed, producing witnesses rather than spectators, as we found Tim Etchells wanted from his audiences. This was expressed through
interaction with the audience or questioning and singling out members, therefore also incorporating the alienation technique from Epic Theatre.
However, the main demonstrative technique of this idea was the personalised booklets. This element was found to be successful by immediately
created a self–awareness through having the audiences' pictures and names on the cover. Also, this provided all the information covered for those with

Audience Theory Paper
Understanding how an audience receives information can be vital in the creation of a production. One of the ways of testing how the audience receives
information is through the audience theory. With the audience theory, audiences can be separated into passive or active, a passive model suggests the
production has an effect on the audience while an active model suggests that the audience interacts with the production to develop their own
interpretation. The is one main difference between the passive and active models. In the active model, audiences form opinions and are therefore in
control, while audiences in a passive audience only accept opinions and have little control. Looking further into the audience theory there is the
reception theory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When there is too much blood used or the blood exits the body in an unrealistic way, the believability of the scene is compromised and it creates a
sense of "fakeness". This idea can also be used in reverse to create "fakeness". This use of "fakeness" can be seen in the 2010 Rupert Goold production
of Macbeth. The images below show the aftermath of Macbeth's death.
These pictures show a decapitated Macbeth, with a clean cut severed head. The image, however, does not accurately represent the decapitation of a
head. In this scene, Macduff is wielding a small dagger. According to Matthew Lawrence, a small sword would be very an ineffective way to
decapitate someone. This dagger (seen below left), although appearing quite sharp, is very small and is not designed to cut through muscle or bone.

Audience-Centeredness In The Workplace
Through my reading this week about audience–centeredness, I have gained some additional insights: it is useful for persuading your audience, it helps
to plan in advance, and you should address both sides of a situation.
Communicating has the purpose of not only conveying information, but also persuading the recipient to act upon their new knowledge. One way to
inspire engagement is to show the audience how they benefit by implementing the new information. However, in order to communicate the benefits it
is imperative to understand the audience. This week I was able to implement this principle in a work situation. I oversee the implementation of
Family Medical Leave (FMLA) in my workplace. We currently have an employee who qualifies for FMLA, but does not want to utilize it because he
fears the loss of further benefits. My co–worker drafted an email regarding his FMLA and asked me to proofread. Thecommunication stated that the
employee "...may lose his job without the FMLA protections." While this is true, the benefits of taking FMLA were not included; such as the fact that
the company will pay health insurance premiums during that time. To persuade the employee to take FMLA it was important to show... Show more

Audience Analysis : ' Touch My Body '

Audience Analysis
SISTAR is made up of four women Hyolyn, Bora, Soyou, and Dasom. They made their debut in South Korea with the hit song "Push Push" and have
had many other popular songs. One of their most recent singles "Touch My Body," is a feel good summer song that targets a couple of different
audiences. SISTAR's song goes after females from the ages of 12 to 25 by using the trendiest fashion, their appearances, and how they carry
themselves. The song also targets a completely different audience, men. Heterosexual males ages 14 to 30 enjoy this song for a set of completely
different reasons; such as how much skin is shown with the clothing that is being worn, suggestive lyrics in the form of sexual innuendos, and the
provocative dance moves that are used throughout the entire video. SISTAR's success with these audiences comes from using their combination of
fashion sense and sex appeal to keep them interested.
It's not just people in South Korea that are affected, but fans overseas as well. K–Pop is popular throughout the world with an exclusive radio station in
Australia, and an annual convention here in America. There is also an exclusive online community that has millions of fans that keep up with every
single move an idol makes.
Saesang fans are people who excessively stalk idols through means of sending them repetitive messages, violating privacy, staking out hotels and event
venues just for a chance to see

Relationship Between Audiences And Films

  • 1. Relationship Between Audiences And Films Unit 24 Assignment 4 Audiences and Films The BBFC has commissioned me to undertake research as part of a project to ascertain to what degree films can be regarded as powerful within contemporary society. In this assignment, I will comprehensively explain the relationship between audiences and films with well explained examples. I refer to the different sectors relating to the topic that include the following: a)active and passive audience models b)the preferred readings theory c)reception theory and viewing contexts d)your own research into the relationship between audiences and films Active and Passive Audiences An active audience is the opposite. An active audience can interact with the programme and tell them their views, and what they would like to see. They can influence the outcome of the whole show. A passive audience is an audience that has no influence over the outcome of the programme. They cannot change it in any way and it is up to the writers to decide what happens and when. Hypodermic Needle Model The Hypodermic Needle Theory is one of the oldest in the field of media studies. Also known as the Magic Bullet Theory, it states that media has a direct, complete and immediate effect on the audience. The message for the media is directly received and wholly accepted by the user. The audience is considered to completely passive entities that are left at the mercy of the media. Media is considered to be super strong with the potential of mesmerizing its

  • 3. Audience Analysis Net Questions Audience Analysis Chapter 4 Net Questions Carolyn Steingard GE111 Instructor: Barbara Likar Monday March 6, 2017 Audience Analysis Net Questions 1). Why is audience analysis the most important part of the writing process for technical writers? Do you agree with this idea? Audience analysis is an important part of the writing process because the writer needs to be able to understand the needs and interests of the intended group they are writing too. The writer will direct their writing style to the intended audience so that it is easy to understand (for customers) or direct (often used for executives). How the message is presented will be even more effective depending on the tone used. Answer I agree with this because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would apply the KISS formula; Keep It Short and Simple to this type of audience. This group may have some knowledge about a product or service however, the idea is to keep the message simple without the use of flowery words, and not burden them with too much information. 3) What are some characteristics you should know about your audience before you begin writing? Why is this important? Answer I believe it is important to know the gender, income level, age range, culture and marital status of your audience. Knowing these characteristics helps a writer to understand if an audience may be interested in a product or service and how well it would sell. For example, a couple with children may be interested in having a double stroller whereas those are not parents would not besssss. Another example is offering alcohol at a restaurant in Turkey where it is forbidden. 4) What are some techniques you can use as a writer to make sure your audience understands what you are trying to say?

Knowing the Audience Knowing Your Audience Paper and Communication Release To know your audience would be an extremely significant mark at any time a company was to communicate material to a group or organization. Knowing your audience proves to be even more significant when a company has to deal with the outcome resulting from a disaster. The disaster of the Chilean copper mine in South America is one example of where knowing your audience was a very significant issue. In a Chilean copper mine, a disastrous downfall in one of the shafts of the mine has left 33 miners trapped 310 meters (1017 feet) below the ground. The outcomes of the company and their reaction to the disaster would eventually define how the world, their audience, would see them. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One method would be a customary issue of information to everyone. This can also be deemed as a general blanket statement. A media release letting everybody know that all attempts to rescue the men from the mine are in progress is an example of a general blanket statement. Another method would be communications specific to the needs of each group. Speaking with the victim's love ones and letting them know if there has been any communication from the victims would be an example. With the information they have, the company should think through the information and let the appropriate crowd know about the information first. In this case, the victim's families would have been right of way number one in the distribution of information; they do not need to get an update on what was occurring on the television. The best way to communicate to the families would be a face–to–face conference. This approach of communication let the family members know that they are significant in the circumstances. A telephone call would be considered soulless and can make a victim feel like he or she is not vital. When it comes to a face–to–face conference, the use of body language and tone of voice can express sympathy and care. The person delivering the news must also proceed in this way. The mining company found that dealing with the families was the difficult complication of the accident. The company soon discovered that many family members not even known to ... • 6. Stereotypes: Why The Audience Sympathizes With Bubbles Identifying and understanding a particular theme within a television series can be difficult, especially for a series that is as complicated as The Wire. Viewers must form flexible analyses that requires them to navigate through a plethora of characters and storylines in order to discover a better awareness of a specific theme. In this essay, I argue that Bubbles gives theaudience insight on the effects of substance abuse among inner city homeless people through the audience's ability to sympathize and empathize with him. This essay will detail exactly why the audience sympathizes with Bubbles, what storyline developments forces the audience to feel empathy for him, and how the audience's sympathies with Bubbles and what happens to him impacts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One development being Bubbles' initial inability to cope with the attack on his friend Johnny. Seeing his friend in the hospital, Bubbles can not help but feel powerless, angry, and sad simultaneously. Having these emotions is important to his character development because it makes him more human than television character. Most, if not all, of the audience can empathize with feeling at least one of these emotions Bubbles felt there. Another storyline development that pressures the audience to feel empathetic towards Bubbles is his willingness to talk to the police. After the attack on Johnny, Bubbles wanted to get revenge so he got in contact with Detective Kimma Greggs, to become an informant trying to uncover the Barksdale organization. Viewers can most defiantly feel emotions of empathy for Bubbles here because the majority of the audience has felt the need to take revenge over someone who has done them wrong. Being able to identify the audience's feeling of empathy for particular storylines gives insight on the effects of substance abuse among inner city homeless people because it makes viewers realize that pain of substance abuse is not only physical but also extremely ... Not only does this encourage the guest and help them create a cohesive timeline, it also helps enhance the audience's understanding and helps ensure an accurate account. How can you get information out, if you can not get the audience's attention? Being able to understand how and why connecting to the audience is an important factor to giving a good speech. When keeping your audience in mind during a speech, it is important to know about your audience, to adapt to your audience during the speech, and to relate to your audience in order to keep the audience intrigued the whole time. The first step to writing any speech is finding out about the audience. Why are you giving this speech? What is it about? Who is it to? The first thing to find out is the size of your audience. Finding out the size will put restraints on what you can and can't do. Things to self asses during the speech to see if the audience is enjoying the speech are: is the audience looking at you? Are they responding with their facial expressions? Are they restless? Is there a lot of fidgeting? Do they laugh or nod at appropriate times? If any of these questions were answered negatively, the solution would be to adapt with the audience to keep them intrigued. • 10. Hamlet What Is the Appeal to the 21 Century Audience As people in the twenty–first century generally don't believe in ghosts and don't consider revenge a duty, why is a play like Hamlet still of interest to film and theatre audiences? As William Shakespeare began writing Hamlet in 1598 – at the end of the 16th century – the play which would go on to become one of his most famous pieces of work was geared towards an audience of "churls", "groundlings" and the less–educated members of theatre–going society, just as equally as the more educated and affluent audience members. Theatre being a relatively affordable and popular form of entertainment for the less wealthy individuals, Shakespeare would cater as much to their tastes as he would to the 'higher society' who would attend his plays. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When you consider that he was following the instructions of his father's "ghost" it becomes even more blurred. It was the ghost which created the fire inside Hamlet, the desire for revenge but also the need for revenge as a duty, to his "murdered" father. The ghost, however, has been the subject of much debate amongst critics and readers of Hamlet, with the controversy surrounding whether the ghost is "real" as a physical element of the play, or whether it exists simply in the mind of Hamlet. The play opens with Horatio and various watchmen alarmed that they have seen a ghostly presence, although we don't know for sure that they have actually seen the purported ghost of the former King. This could indicate that what they saw wasn't actually a ghost, and further evidence to suggest this could be found in the scene in which Hamlet sees the ghost but Gertrude cannot see him (Act III, Scene IV). Some critics, such as Jan Pick, argue that the appearance of the ghost as an actual element of the play is simply to encourage the audience to accept Hamlet as a rational human being rather than an insane character; the inclusion of the ghost as somebody the audience (if not the other characters) can see lends an air of authenticity to the ghost scenes, authenticity which can only exist to a modern audience in the assumption that Hamlet actually is insane, and imagining the ghost. Conclusion I considered the impact this might have on the success of the team exercise and came to the conclusion that I had to speak with the other person at our next meeting. I didn't want answers to why she had behaved in the way she did but neither did I want this episode to be destructive to the success of the Team Teach. So that is what I did. • 14. The Importance Of A Speech On The Audience When making a speech, it is important that the speaker understands who their audience is. By understanding the characteristics of their listeners, the speaker is able to tailor their speech so that it involves topics that interest the audience. The listeners will then be more attentive and interest in listening to the message. In this Communication class, my classmates are my audience because they are the ones who will be listening and giving me feedback. In order to make effective speeches, there are specific characteristics that I must take into consideration to make sure that I modify my speeches according to their values and interests so that they will listen attentively. Knowing the demographics of my audience beforehand can really help me prepare for the message of my speech. Therefore, a characteristic of my listeners is that they are all young adults between the ages of seventeen and twenty–one. In order to appeal to this age group, I must make sure that the topic that I choose to present must be something that this age group values so that they 'll show interest. Also, I must make sure any references or words I use must be something that they all can understand or relate to. First, I need to make sure that I am audience–centered. This means that I will need to "keep the audience foremost in mind at every step of speech preparation and presentation." This means that I need to take into consideration the demographic and situational factors. Demographic audience analysis is when I focus the audience's demographic factors such as age and gender. • 21. The Use Of Personal Anecdotes On The Audience And It It is within the human nature to be interested in other people's experiences. Whether it be with reality shows or blog posts, people like to hear different incidents through diverse perspectives. Writers take advantage of this curiosity and try to tie experiences into their works. Many times writers will include experiences of their own in order to convince their audience of their perspective on a subject. These personal experiences are done in order to make an impact on the audience and it is written in a certain way to make it the most efficient for the readers. The use of personal anecdotes is effective when details are described to the point where readers can create their own opinions, when they are used as the main topic against an argument as opposed to being an unimportant detail, and when it has the ability to appeal to the audience's emotion. Details within the anecdote are best described to the point where the audience can draw their own conclusions on what is happening. Description is crucial in order to fully understand what is going on. In the case of "Blue–Collar Brilliance", written by Mike Rose, the author puts in a lot of time to adequately describe what the significance of his experiences mean and how they contribute to the story. • 25. Characteristics Of Bona Fide For The Audience Bona Fide for the Audience A step off the podium, an audience in applause, and the thoughts inside whispering, "How did I do?" when they should be urging, "What did I give?" The good news is that the audience can indeed become the focal point of any speech if the speaker tailors their message toward it. In this paper, I will analyze three situational characteristics and three demographics that contribute to the uniqueness of my audience, explain why these traits matter, and briefly examine the scope of their limitations in an attempt to understand the art of the invaluable "audience–centered" speech (Holloway, "An Exercise in Audience Analysis"). Nervousness is linear, at least for me it is. As the audience size increases, I find my nervousness does as well. People usually have an audience of one every day in their normal conversations, sometimes that might grow to an audience of two, three, or even four. As the audience size increases, it's only natural to realize that it's more challenging to please everyone. Sense of humor, attention span, interests, these are all variable and unique to each audience member. How then, can this divide be reconciled? The answer is simple and it's a technique that the education system has embedded in students' minds. Find similarities. Find common ground. (Fraleigh and Tuman, 141). One way to ensure that the speaker is understandable and relatable to as many audience members as possible is to utilize a technique called "teaching in the middle" (Fraleigh and Tuman, 122). This method roughly calculates the median expertise in the audience and tailors the speech toward that level. The audience that I will speak to is large enough (approximately twenty–five) to where I certainly need to factor in this approach. It makes common ground much more achievable, while also humbling the speaker, which makes for a friendlier relationship with the audience though they may be more obligatorily than enthusiastically present. In the classroom setting, let's face it, there are students who are watching the clock, patiently awaiting the end of class. Yet some teachers have the ability to capture a student's attention so well that the student might forget all about the time until the end of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Audience Analysis : Characteristics Of My Classroom Audience Audience Analysis: Characteristics of my Classroom Audience Audience analysis is described as the process of examining information about your listeners. Then using that analysis helps you adapt your message so that your listeners will respond as you wish (Steven A. and Susan J. Beebe, 2015). It is highly important to read your audience when presenting a speech , the first thing I noticed about my classroom audience was everyone has a good sense of humor and were open minded as to what they might be hearing. In this paper I will be analyzing my classroom audience and describing how they might react to my speeches and what is the best way to present my speeches. I will discuss the differences between each person and how their views will shape my speeches as a whole because ultimately I must appeal to my audience. When I gave my first speech to the class about my life I was very nervous, I didn't know any of these people and they didn't know me, but by the end of my speech I realized it wasn't that bad and we all get stage fright so it was okay that I was nervous. I saw then how understanding my audience was and they won't judge my speeches as a whole based off of one mishap. While standing in front of the class presenting I saw a lot of head nodes indicating to me that they were following along with what my life was about and they showed interest by laughing, and by doing these thing they we unknowingly giving me feedback about how I was doing and weather they liked what they ... • 31. The Media Sphere, There Exist Producers And Their Audience Prompt 1 In the media sphere, there exist producers and their audience. Producers are responsible for encoding meaning through a set of codes embedded in a media text, and the audience is then responsible for decoding these codes and turning otherwise unnatural correspondences between colors, images, and sounds into something meaningful and comprehensible (Hall 130–131). Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding model is essential in understanding the reasons why sometimes, media texts are embraced by an audience, while other times, they are criticized and interpreted in negotiated or oppositional ways. My essay describes how the encoding/decoding model can be applied to Dove's polarizing #ChooseBeautiful campaign. It will ultimately show how the relationship between producers and audiences in determining meaning of a media text is volatile and dynamic due to the tension created by producers' inherent proclivity to control their audience by imposing cultural hegemonies upon them, and the audience's innate tendency to play an active role in decoding media texts. Producers of Dove's #ChooseBeautiful campaign aimed to empower women by encouraging them to accept the idea that being beautiful is a "personal power... all [women] have the right to embrace" ("Dove Choose Beautiful"). This campaign was a reaction to a statistic Dove found that stated 96% of women between the ages of 18 and 64 in 20 countries did not see themselves as beautiful ("Dove Choose Beautiful"). • 32. The Four Theories Of Passive Audience Theory Active Audience Theory Four theorists are the contributing authors of the active research theory. These authors evolved the role audience play and their ability to actively engage with communication medians. The idea of deconstructionism was the focus of the work of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault during the 1960's. Later in the twentieth century theorist Raymond Bauer developed The Obstinate Audience. In the early 1980's a theorist by the name of Stuart Hall challenged the traditional theories of an audience role in the media and developed his encoding/decoding theory. Each contributed to the current understanding of the active role audiences engage in when information is presented. In this section a brief description of the earlier theory of the audiences as passive viewers will be presented to provide a background of the role of the audience. Next, the major theorist and their contributions to the active audience theory will be presented. The section will end with a summary of active research theory and its contribution to communication medians today. Passive Audience Theory During the early 1900's audiences were considered to be passive, an audience that merely observed events rather than actively responding to the event in the media. During this time, several theories were developed on the media's ability to provide information to a group of people that did not think about the information just simply receive the information. She discussed how different forms of lights are used for different areas to give a mood for that area. For example, there was a house in a recent play that had pink lights showing through the window to give the house a warm feeling. She also focused on projections used throughout the play and figured out how long each projection should be. I asked Elise why it is important to have lights in a ... Throughout this essay there will be case studies of campaign plans and an analysis of how the above principles have been applied in order to help an arts organisation meet their organisational aims. When incorporating audience engagement into any form of plan, one first needs to know if their target audience is 'available' or unavailable. Keith Diggle says that 'Within your catchment area there is an Available Audience– aim for your Available Audience now and your Unavailable Audience later' (29). This is an important point to reflect on when considering audience development, as an available audience has 'already experienced the art form you and your organisation are presenting and include such experiences in their regular diet of activity' where as an unavailable audience 'is made up of those people who do not attend events of the type you are presenting and do not feel any particular need to attend such events' (34). When balancing social, artistic and financial objectives it is crucial to take into account your available and unavailable audiences as one needs to ensure your objectives are targeting the most appropriate and useful audience, especially when one's objectives involve attracting a group who are 'defined by their social or economic class, or by their age or by their taste in a particular manifestation of an art ... One of the ways of testing how the audience receives information is through the audience theory. • 42. Audience-Centeredness In The Workplace Through my reading this week about audience–centeredness, I have gained some additional insights: it is useful for persuading your audience, it helps to plan in advance, and you should address both sides of a situation. Communicating has the purpose of not only conveying information, but also persuading the recipient to act upon their new knowledge. One way to inspire engagement is to show the audience how they benefit by implementing the new information. However, in order to communicate the benefits it is imperative to understand the audience. This week I was able to implement this principle in a work situation. I oversee the implementation of Family Medical Leave (FMLA) in my workplace. We currently have an employee who qualifies for FMLA, but does not want to utilize it because he fears the loss of further benefits. My co–worker drafted an email regarding his FMLA and asked me to proofread. Thecommunication stated that the employee "...may lose his job without the FMLA protections."
