5. Setting: "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" takes place in Angel's Camp, California, years after the California Gold Rush of the 1840's and 1850's. Angel's Camp is a mining site that was established when many people flocked to California to mine for gold. This is revealed when Simon Wheeler explains to the narrator that the story about Jim Smiley took place around 1849 or 1850, thus the world outside of the story told in the story is in some year after 1850. The story within the story, as said before, takes place in 1849 or 1850. Angel's Camp was a mining town, like said before, that contained several homes for former miners, and there is a rustic tavern located nearby to where the narrator is, and the narrator finds Simon Wheeler in this tavern and asks him about Leonidas W. Smiley.
