Henri Rene Albert Guy de Maupassant was born in 1850 in France to Laure Le Poittevin and Gustave de Maupassant. He was sent to seminary school for classical studies but was expelled from his first school. After graduating college, he enlisted in the army during the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871, he moved to Paris and worked as a clerk for the Navy Department and later the Ministry of Public Instruction. Maupassant authored around 300 short stories, 6 novels, and 3 travel books and is considered a master of the short story form, with works like Boule de Suif and La Parure.
