decades. Students at the Linda Jamieson School of Dance can
take classes in a variety of dance styles including jazz, tap,
classical ballet, contemporary, and musical theater.
Musical theater requires a unique blend of movement, music,
and words. Actors and dancers are tasked with telling a story
with all of these elements. Training in musical theater
typically includes partner work and the study of many dance
styles, the blend of which informs the type of dance most
people associate with musical theater. This unique blended
style was largely developed by choreographer Jack Cole.

3. Jack Cole
• Born in New Jersey in 1911, Jack Cole’s professional career
was launched in 1930 when he began dancing in nightclubs.
He developed his own unique style that incorporated various
techniques from jazz and ballet as well as movements
originating in India, Africa, the Caribbean, and Harlem. When
he began choreographing dance routines for high-profile
musicals, he utilized his own unique style which is still widely
used in modern-day musicals.
Musicals choreographed by Jack Cole include Alive and
Kicking (1950), Kismet (1953), A Funny Thing Happened on
the Way to the Forum (1962), Foxy (1964), and Man of La
Mancha (1965). He is also credited with the choreography in
numerous classic films.
