PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Vanderbilt Lane is in the Seaberry Farm subdivision, on
the eastern side of Aquidneck Island, and the house at the end of this cul­de­sac is
on a hill, providing fantastic views of the Sakonnet River.
Erik and Alix Holling bought this house in 2007 from the builder, who had used it
as a weekend getaway for a few years after it was built in 2004. Even though it was
nearly­new when they bought it, the Hollings decided to change the interior look
from traditional to modern, and today the house has an open, Scandinavian­
inspired design.
A wall was removed on the first floor to create an open kitchen, dining and living
and sitting room area. In this main living area on the first floor, large windows and
an all­white decor make the space look even more light and airy.
There are two white Corian­topped islands in the kitchen, a large white dining
table, comfortable­looking sofas and chairs and even a cozy window seat with
tufted fabric­covered walls surrounding the seat itself, all upholstered in white
fabric. There are several French doors opening to the covered front porch, which
has a built­in hot tub.
The first­floor living space also has oak floors that were lightened 10 shades to get
a bleached look, and there are two fireplaces, both built­in flush with the walls to
look sleek and modern. The front door opens to a hallway/mudroom. The first
floor also has a full bathroom (one of four full bathrooms in the house) and a walk­
in storage pantry.
The kitchen has lots of novel storage features, including a tall cabinet next to the
double wall ovens that opens to reveal multiple storage racks for spices. Another
tall cabinet, next to the refrigerator, opens to a "breakfast nook" area with a
counter holding a coffee maker and toaster.

There is a finished basement that includes lots more living and storage spaces: a
playroom for the couple's three children, a home gym area, and a wine room.
Upstairs on the second floor are the home's four bedrooms, three more full
bathrooms, and a home office. There is really a fifth bedroom, a large "bonus"
room that could be used as more family room space, but the Hollings are using it
as a large bedroom shared by their two oldest children, who love to play together.
On the second floor, the white and cream­colored decor is mixed with more color,
as well as whimsical touches including one wall with an unusual wallpaper with a
faces motif. There is also a handy second­floor laundry room.
Alix Holling, who is a former ski instructor, is also an artist, and her work is
displayed throughout the home. She said the couple plan on staying in the area
once their house is sold.
The house at 409 Vanderbilt Lane in Portsmouth is priced at $1,650,000. Taxes
