• Annual subscription rate: £71.00 (Figures from

Audience Profile CR
• Creative review (CR) has an international audience of professional
designers, digital designers, photographers, illustrators and creative
students.
• You would expect a more mature audience to read this magazine e.g.
17+ and people that are working in the industry or studying it to buy a
copy. You wouldn't expect people to read it if they have no interest in
being apart of the creative industry because it is there to review the
creative work of people mainly in the UK and the US in order to keep
people up to date, and to inspire peoples work.
• I think the magazine’s main audience in terms of Psychographics
would be reformers as these people are self reliant and are quite
individual people. They very likely to be well educated and intellectual,
hence the use of elaborated language throughout the magazine.
Audience Profile CR
• The Creative review is the leading magazine in publishing
advertisement, design and visual culture. They publish real peoples
work from readers in fields of the creative industry. These people are
experienced and skilled professionals, students and freelancers who
have heavy interest in TV, Radio and Print commercials and website
design etc. The readers are well educated and have high end
production equipment. So in terms of Socio economic status, students
in group E would be targeted and people in the ABC1 Groups as they
are likely to be well educated and have very skilled well paid jobs.
• The website has around 40K views a month (figures from alexa.com)
suggesting that most of its readers are young and very technologically
literate. They have an iPad app with subscriptions at a cheaper price
than the print version so there’s likely to be a higher viewership on the
app.
CR Double page spreads
CR Double Page Spreads
• These are some ideas that I really want to incorporate
into my double page spread design. I like the
arrangement of photos and how the text is structured
around the photos. On the first photo I especially like
how the actually text is used as a feature on the page. If
I found some interesting typographic I would probably
do something like this.
• For my photography I’d like to visit Tate Modern or
another museum of modern art to get some photographs
of something new and creative for my DPS. This visit
could also inspire me to create something with my DPS.
National Union of Journalists
• Journalists have a Code Of Conduct to follow when
they are obtaining their information and when they
are writing their information for press. Although
Journalists have the right to freedom and
expression in the interest of informing the public,
they cannot obtain their information without
intruding on peoples private lives which may cause
grief and distress. More on the NUJ code of
conduct and examples can be found on the
attached document.
PCC
• The Press Complaints Commission was set up to deal with any
complaints made against UK magazines and newspapers. It has
since closed on the 8th of September 2014 and has been
replaced by IPSO, the Independent Press Standards Organisation.
They were an independent body of people and they offered a free
service to the public. They could deal with any text or pictures
printed in magazines or news papers and videos and other forms
of online media posted to websites. They could also deal with
complaints made against the behaviour of journalists or
photographers if they are too persistent, obtaining information
through illegal means like hidden cameras and failing to get
consent to talk to children, etc. However due to its lack of
effectiveness during the Leveson Enquiry, it was closed to make
way for the new body.
IPSO
• IPSO, the Independent Press Standards
Organisation regulates the newspaper and
magazine industry. They attempt to uphold the
standards and rules that are set for News editors
and journalists by the National Union of Journalists.
If these codes are broken then the any member of
the pubic or a company/organisation can make a
complaint through the IPSO.
Model Releases and
Location Permissions
• Before I create my DPS I will carry out a Recce. This word is
derived from a military term Reconnaissance. This would involve
me visiting the location of where I will be taking my photographs,
and photographing the area I will be taking my photographs in.
• Normally if I were to use photographs of people in my DPS I
would need a model release form to give me permissions to use
someones photo in my magazine. However, since there will be no
people featured in my DPS I wont require any model releases.
• I will be taking photographs of an exhibit in The Curve in the
Barbican Centre where photography is permitted. Therefore no
permissions from the Barbican centre or the artist of the piece in
the exhibition are needed.
Theme of My DPS
• I had plans to visit a modern art and design museum either the
Tate Modern, Design Museum or the Barbican and take some
photos of a new exhibit. I have now chosen to visit the Barbican on
the 26th of November. There I’ll be viewing an exhibit by the artist
Walead Beshty and will be viewing an interview with him. I’ll then
review the exhibit, say how popular it was amounts guests,
perhaps gather some opinions from people if I'm brave enough to
talk to strangers and discus different qualities and possible
meanings of the piece. From the interview I will write about some
brief background history into the designer and a will . I shall gather
this information through what I can find out from the exhibit itself
and and online research I can do after this.
Creating my DPS
• I will be using Adobe InDesign to build my DPS and to
export the finished copy. I will also be using Adobe
Photoshop/ Adobe Lightroom for editing the photos I am
going to take for the DPS. Any other graphic that I may use I
will be using Adobe Illustrator to create them. As I am a
student my Creative Cloud subscription is only £15.88 a
month, but a normal subscription can be up to £45 a month.
This subscription allows me to use every application from the
Adobe Creative Suite.
• I will be using a 15” MacBook Pro with Retina Display with a
Quad Core Intel i7 Processor and 16GB Memory. This laptop
originally cost £2199 but has since been reduce to £1999.
Research
Primary research is any kind of research that you go out and collect yourself. This
can be anything from doing surveys, running interviews, making observations.
For example, for my double page spread I will be visiting the Barbican to do my
Primary research. I will be taking photographs of an exhibit and then will be
watching the artist of the piece, Walead Beshty, in conversation with an
interviewer.
Secondary research is when you build upon the research you have collected.
You can collate and further analyse what you have collected from your primary
research, or do more online research to build upon the primary research the
others. For example, I will be using the internet to find out more about the Artist
Walead Beshty to see what his previous works are and his background etc so I
write a good article for my double page spread.
Genre
• Creative Review is a design, advertising and
culture magazine. It has a very varied target
audience in terms or age as there will be lots of
different people of different ages and occupations
who will have a keen interest in the magazine.

Financial considerations
Because creative and artistic magazines like CR have fairly low circulation, they tend not to
have as big budgets per issue than larger magazines would have. Therefore the journalists
writing for the magazine are paid quite a bit less per 1000 words. For example, here are aa
couple fairly recent figures freelance journalist received when writing for creative
magazines.
• Art Monthly in 2013 paid £100 per 1000 word review.
• Photography Monthly paid £100 per 3000 word interview.
Journalist job specifications and salaries can be found on the attached Job Roles
document.
There isn't any specific data on how much money CR make from advertising as they only
accept enquires. However, when researching other niche magazines like The Wire, they
charge for a full page: Colour: £1450, Mono: £995, for a half page: Colour: £850, Mono:
£525 and for a quarter page: £500 Mono: £300. This means there isn't an extremely large
budget to play with when producing niche magazines like CR, compared to Vogue who
charge in the region of £20,000 for a page of advertisement.
Meeting Deadlines
• Deadlines are very important as a journalist. If a magazine is
to give you a deadline not only will you have wasted a lot of
time that you wont get paid for but you can loose all credibility
as a writer. This is especially significant if you are a freelance
journalists as it would be very difficult to obtain work from
magazines if they know you have missed deadlines. It gives
the impression you don't care about the work or your job, or
that you are lazy and haven't worked hard enough to meet the
deadline. Seeing as there are hundreds of journalists that can
meet deadlines it would make sense for a magazine to
employ someone that hasn't missed a deadline before.
