1. How Effective Is The
Combination Of Your Main
Product And Your Ancillary
Evaluation Task 2
2. Assignment Brief
A2 media studies unit G324 required us to
produce a short film lasting approximately
5 minutes. We also had to complete an
ancillary task; To produce a film poster
and film review which emulates real world
products
3. Photoshop
I used Adobe Photoshop CS6 to create both of
my ancillary task’s. the use of Photoshop allowed
me to create a product that felt and looked as if it
was published from a high end institution.
Photoshop allows for a far more professional
aesthetic as apposed to a limited unappealing
poster that cannot attract audience members.
Photoshop also, allows users to manipulate and
redesign images so that they can be used to
create an original visually appealing image.
5. My Film Review
The first of my Ancillary tasks is a film review for
my short film I produced called ‘The Lost Ones’ .
These would usually be found within a film critic
magazine or any magazines based around film.
As a result I wanted to make a film review which
looks as realistic as possible the reason for this
is so that I could replicate real world products. I
decided to use empire magazine as my template
which I then used to spring board off from and
create a film review which looked both similar
yet unique.
6. Analysis Of Empire
Magazine ReviewThese are examples of typical
empire magazine reviews taken
from two different magazines.
The conventions of the layout
can be seen; from the title
fonts, Star rating positioning,
colour scheme being a
combination of reds, whites,
oranges, and darker reds. I
thought the positioning of the
central image was powerful as
it gave the review a more
focused appeal.
7. My Poster
The second of my ancillary tasks was a film
poster that I had to create. I chose to base my
imagery on old propaganda posters which I
found really intriguing as it was a combination
of bold colours and solid shapes. Instead of
taking a central image I created one from
scratch by combining several shapes
together with solid colours to create
something new. My poster contradicts the
usual codes and conventions of a
horror/thriller/romance poster as it creates its
own proper gander style genre.
8. Analysis Of Posters
I discovered that the posters used in the media for horrors
and thrillers consist of dark colours; different shades of red,
black and grey’s. I tried to use this information when
creating my own. I also realised that the title is placed over
head in bold, the certification is placed at the bottom
alongside the release date.
