2. • Began in 1993 by Bryan Gee
• Gee had previously worked at Rhythm King taking
demos and presenting them under the name V
Recordings.
• Rhythm King began producing house, acid house,
acid jazz, sampling culture and hip hop in the late
80s as an independent record label.
• Since then Rhythm King has made enough
success they have formed a distribution deal with
Sony Records subsidiary Epic Records.
3. V Recordings
• General Managers are Bryan G, Jumpin Jack Frost and Ruffstuff.
• The company specializes in Drum & Bass, Jungle and Electronic.
• Drum & Bass is a genre of English music also known as Jungle which
emerged during the early 1990s.
• They were able to distribute their sound through club DJs where the public
would hear the sounds fresh for the first time and be able to source the
product from the front line. The company was called Vinyl Experience then
shortened to V Recordings.
• They began with, better known today as Roni Size and DJ Krust who are
producers themselves.
• The artists are locally based in comparison to major record companies that
lead a wider audience. Often brought to be distributed because of the
mainstream quality. Independent record companies like V Recordings
bring together communities of the drum and bass scene at events focusing
on specific genres. London and Bristol have the largest drum and bass
scene whilst it was first born in the heart of Bristol.
4. Disadvantages
• Although they bring together small communities they lack strong
international distribution networks. V Recordings are culminating a
scene throughout Brazil with DJ Marky, XRS and Patife at Skol Beats
which on the upside cement their reputation as one of the leading
independent record companies around.
• They feature on radios such as Carhatt Wip which distributes
sounds further across Europe and America. Anyone can tune in over
the internet but this is still not a strong distribution method if we
are comparing it to the likes of Sony Records subsidiary Epic
Records.
• Independent Record Companies are often less powerful and not so
established, some often don’t have the same leverage as V
Recordings without access to radio, retail, disadvantaging the
responsibility of independent labels to seek out or develop new
ways of promoting records.
5. Advantages
• V Recordings is a more sustainable business
model and artist rosters.
• The cooperate managers work closely as a family
to produce the desired sound representative of
the label.
• A more direct path from the creaton of the music
to promoting in local areas.
• Independent Record labels now have the
advantage of online distrubution through Sound
cloud and Kickstarter.com
6. Further Advantages
• The lower expectations o records sales
allowed the independent label to take more
chances on the diversity of artist whilst major
companies deliver similar styles.
• |They are also structured to make more
money with the fewer record sales.
• The small businesses employee few multi-
talented creative and technical artists at lower
expenses and a higher passion.
7. Product Distribution
• Marketing the product is still originally put
onto Vinyl without letting go of their initial
style.
• Within modern technology they sell digital
copies through iTunes, their website
(https://vrecordings.databeats.com/download
/plvrt005dd), Sound cloud and they sell
merchandise for their community fan base on
their website.
