Reflect on BLOG in teaching
SWOT of BLOG
Scaffolding learning by reflecting one’s one studying experience Restricted editing and commenting function – only the author can
edit and the comments can only be made at the end of the article
Addressing one of the key elements in the Arts curriculum -
creativity Limited editing tools
Encouraging communicating and collaborating by commenting Contents and entry are irretrievable once any change has been
and tagging made
Creating a free and trusting studying environment A personal journal rather than a teamwork journal
Learning history can be easily retrieved at anytime Comments cannot be supervised by teachers
Personalised journal Online security issue
Can be accessed anytime anywhere Improper comments can be viewed by anyone before any action is
                                                                     taken by the host
Cannot be ‘physically damaged’ – lost, or eaten up by dog!

For teachers to – Privacy issue – once the blog opens to a certain group, privacy
                                                                     will under certain threat
Provide feed back towards students learning reflection
                                                                     Cyber bullying
Assess their own teaching
Few comments can cause feeling of ‘left alone’ by the community
Have a better understanding of the learning environment
when seeing other people’s blog with more comments
Understand individual student better – bring the classroom out of
Time management can be challenged when having to juggle
a learning centre
between managing one’s blog and commenting on others’.
For students to –
Focus might be shifted more towards playing along editing tools
See their peers learning journey than towards the actual content
Provide support and feed back on their peer’s learning
Form their own studying group by tagging
I enjoyed designing a Chinese menu in wiki space today. Jane started the menu and I made a few changes. I also put a

Today, Ms Enya taught us a few Chinese words, like ‘ni hao’ – means hello, and ‘ wo jiao…’ – I am.. I enjoyed the role
playing but I found the pronunciation is very hard!
                                                                                                                       learning
Today, Ms Enya showed us a few videos in the class, there are children’s songs and dances in Chinese. I of couldn’t
1st January understand them but the music is nice.
                                                                                                                     Chinese.

Hello Elise, I like your writing. I think you said that you are 9 years old and that your mum loves gardening.

Hello Elise, you dad is an electrician, right? My grandpa is an electrician as well. I think I want to be an electrician when I grow up.

Hello Elise. You wrote – hello, my name is Elise. I am 9 years old. There are 4 people in my family. My dad, my mum, my brother. My mum is a
housewife. My dad is a electrician. My brother is 12. my mum likes gardening and my dad likes fishing. My brother likes sleeping. I think you
should write ‘wo jin nian 9 sui le’, you missed ‘le’ at the end of the sentence.

Teacher’s reflection: previously I thought Chinese characters
would turn them off, but now I see that there are students who
are keen to learn. I should start to introduce characters now.

Hello Elise, I am glad that you enjoyed our little lunch out today. You did very well. That
Chinese lady did speak very fast. Next time you probably could ask her ‘qing ni shuo man yi
dianer, hao ma?’

We know you speak good Chinese. You do not have to show us that you can. You are so
annoying.

SWOT of BLOG Scaffolding learning by reflecting one’s one studying experience Restricted editing and commenting function – only the author can edit and the comments can only be made at the end of the article Addressing one of the key elements in the Arts curriculum - creativity Limited editing tools Encouraging communicating and collaborating by commenting Contents and entry are irretrievable once any change has been and tagging made Creating a free and trusting studying environment A personal journal rather than a teamwork journal Learning history can be easily retrieved at anytime Comments cannot be supervised by teachers Personalised journal Online security issue Can be accessed anytime anywhere Improper comments can be viewed by anyone before any action is taken by the host Cannot be ‘physically damaged’ – lost, or eaten up by dog! For teachers to – Privacy issue – once the blog opens to a certain group, privacy will under certain threat Provide feed back towards students learning reflection Cyber bullying Assess their own teaching Few comments can cause feeling of ‘left alone’ by the community Have a better understanding of the learning environment when seeing other people’s blog with more comments Understand individual student better – bring the classroom out of Time management can be challenged when having to juggle a learning centre between managing one’s blog and commenting on others’. For students to – Focus might be shifted more towards playing along editing tools See their peers learning journey than towards the actual content Provide support and feed back on their peer’s learning Form their own studying group by tagging
