Locus Of Control Thesis
Question: How is it possible that our attitudes and values can affect our economic status? Hypothesis: Internal locus of control refers to the
perception that we have control over what happens to us and what happens to others (37). I believe that every person, whether they were born into a
rich family or had to work from the day they could walk until the day they die, has potential to succeed. No one ever wants to take responsibility for
their failure, he/she would rather place the blame on someone else. The individual cannot take all of the blame for their situation, most of the blame
is put on the group to which the individuals belong to, which in this case is the poverty class (32). It is said that the group of poverty as a whole

Locus Of Control
When we look at the research done by Mamlin, Harris, & Case in "A Methodological Analysis of Research on Locus of Control and Learning
Disabilities: Rethinking a Common Assumption" one thing that we have learned through this research is that children or students with learning
disabilities do not necessarily have an internal locus of control but rather an extra locus of control. "This means they often view their lives as being
controlled by external forces. Their motivational problems stem from three interrelated areas: external locus of control, negative attributions, and
learned helplessness" (Mamlin, Harris, & Case, 2001). By understanding how the locus of control works with children in students with learning
disabilities we can adapt our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Innovations introduced in this action research are things such as online videos and techniques that can be watched and used by viewing them on the
Internet. One of the main innovations that can be used for this action research is simply encouragement and egg knowledge meant with a student with
a learning disability. But giving them encouragement and what they do and what they are learning builds their confidence to the point that they are not
discouraged to try new things.
Another innovation that is been used in this action research is by taking the new vocabulary and ability to communicate in involving it with something
that the subject is interested in. In this action research new techniques in communication and vocabulary were used by incorporating these techniques
into basketball and baseball through their communication to use the techniques that were learn each day. Getting this young man the opportunity to use
what he is learning with confidence by using it in an environment that he is comfortable in such as basketball he is been able to understand and
correlate the difference in this communication and use it outside of that environment. Being able to recall the information that was learned while
playing basketball in communicating and being able to take that information on how he communicated in putting it in everyday life is one way that
this innovation has worked very well. This is also one of the adjustments that we had made in order to allow this subject to see the different types of
communication that take place in and out of

An Evaluation Of External Locus Of Control
An Evaluation of External Locus of Control
Everything happens for a reason. Some individuals believe that they are the reason behind everything that occurs to them. Other individuals believe in a
higher power that predestines them to a certain fate. There are still yet some individuals who fall in between both aspects of personality studies. A
non–complex description of this is how my religion can be evaluated through the locus of control. I know a tad surprising, but religion just like in many
aspects of the world places an enormous amount of emphasis on what I say or do each day. When I go to Sunday mass, I feel more relaxed about
what is yet to come the next day because I have made the effort to acknowledge my rights as well as my wrongs in front of God. While on the other
hand, when something doesn't go my way I feel the need to condemn God and ask Him, "Why have you placed this obstacle in my way?" This
brings me to my research question; does my external locus of control affect my behavior? After acquiring some knowledge on the topic in class and
from previous readings, I have hypothesized that external locus of control does affect behavior. I will now introduce locus of control, provide evidence
that supports my hypothesis, and review the main aspects of my argument.

Locus Of Control Hypothesis
Through this study, answers were being sought to whether a personality variable (Locus of Control) and motivational factors rooted in Uses &
Gratifications theory (the desire for virtual community, beautiful websites, maintaining interpersonal relations, and the desire for diversion &
entertainment) predict Internet abuse at work in the form of shopping, searching for information unrelated to work, and communicating with friends.
2.Research Design
Survey research design was used through the administration of online survey questionnaires.
Hypothesis being tested includes:
1.External locus of control predicts Internet abuse at work; those who are high (as opposed to those who are low) in external locus of control will
report frequently abusing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This study limits its personality variables only to LOC. Additional personality variables, such as self–regulation or situational variables, such as the
perceived consequences of misbehavior, may add to our ability to explain various types of Internet abuse.
b.The study fails to explain why education emerged as a significant predictor of the likelihood of the frequency of Internet abuse at work supporting
Hypothesis 3. It could be, that better–educated workers had more discretionary income that they could spend shopping (no income data). Perhaps more
educated workers had jobs that afforded them more autonomy at work and thus more opportunity to engage in undetected Internet abuse.
c.Work place norms was not measured in this study and this might play a significant role in workplace Internet abuse. For example, workplace norms
such as contacting friends through the Internet may be subject to different workplace norms than shopping, online gambling, or searching for
information. Communication and enforcement of norms may have differential effects based, in part, upon the employee's

The Locus of Control Contsruct Essay
Locus of Control, originally conceptualized by Julian Rotter (1966), has been found to be critical to numerous studies. Within psychology, it is
considered to be a generalized expectancy regarding the forces that determine reinforcement. Individuals with internal orientation perceive rewards as
contingent based on personal behavior, whereas those with external orientation attribute reinforcement received to external factors such as chance and
powerful others (Levenson 1981). This essay examines the nature and significance of this psychological construct, especially in academic achievement
and health domains. Additionally, it has been argued that high internality is positively associated with leadership while high scores of powerful others...

The creator, Leveson (1972), found that participants with chance orientation shared traits which could not be distinguished by the P or I scales. Further,
the study in anti–pollution activism also support the validity. Responses from participants demonstrated that involvement was different for those having
high scores on the P scale, compared with the Chance scale (Levenson 1974). Therefore, the Levenson Scale is more sufficiently reliable and
appropriate.
As an important predictor of health behaviors, generally, Locus of Control construct supplies health problems and treatments with essential insights.
There is evidence to suggest that patients scoring high on the I scale might be better suited to ameliorative and preventive treatment for the sake of
recovery (Strickland 1974 cited in Levenson 1981). Additionally, patients' participation in health treatment cannot be emphasized more. Individuals that
view themselves as masters of destiny are more likely to engage in better adjustment since they have positive expectations and self–control which are
pivotal determinants with regard to health outcomes (Wallston and Wallston 1978). Critics might argue that the correlations between Locus of Control
construct and health issue are not significant. Some researchers, however, suggest that this construct has low predictive power since it fails to predict
some aspects of health, including survival rates with regard to cancer patients, controls of metabolic in diabetes

Rotter's Locus Of Control Scale Test Analysis
Rotter's Locus of Control Scale Test, is a test that measures the belief of controlling outcomes in people's lives. The Locus of Control Scale test divides
control into two categories; internal and external. People with internal control believe that their actions decide outcomes in their lives, while people
with external control believe that outcomes are beyond their control, which they can't influence. In the following essay, the results of my Locus of
Control Scale Test will be discussed, along with the effects of control on myleadership behavior and how my control responds to different leadership
styles.
Based on the results from Rotter's Locus of Control Scale Test, my locus of control is internal. Which means, I believe that my ... Show more content on

As a leader, my internal locus of control drives me to always be improving. Since I have an internal locus of control, I don't need outside influences
to motivate me. Passion, and drive comes from within and I know the actions I take will have a direct effect on my outcome. When I lead, I know that
my actions will have a direct effect on my outcome, either positively or negatively. Due to having self–awareness, I am accountable for my actions and
place a high importance on making correct decisions.
In management, nothing happens without engagement, and goals are not reached without motivation. A Laissez–Faire management style may just get
bye, but nothing will ever progress. A Laissez–faire management style is directly related to an external locus of control. This type of management
would believe they are unable to control, or influence the performance of employees, therefore there is a belief that results will happen on their own.
When the results are not achieved, this type of manager will not take responsibility for poor results. Instead, this manager would blame his followers
for not completing a task successfully. This laissez–faire management style is in direct conflict with a leader with an internal locus. A leader with an
internal locus would engage with his followers, continually work at the development of each individual, and take full responsibility for unsuccessful
results.
Another leadership style is

Abstract Obesity has become a rising epidemic in recent decades (Manson & Bassuk, 2003) and it is often attributed to unhealthy eating or overeating
(Puhl & Heuer, 2010). Things like food choice, especially unhealthy food choices, can attribute to how an individuals weight locus of control is
perceived because unhealthy foods are often priced lower than healthy foods (Cummins, 2005). This can show that since an obese individual is willing
to buy less expensive food that they are indifferent to their food habits (Cummins, 2005; Puhl & Heuer, 2010). The purpose of the present study was to

One limitation is that the main effects on perceived weight locus of control were weight of individual in scenario, however the weight of the
participant was not taken into account. This could cause a confound because based on the weight of the individual as well as the way they self–identify
with their body could influence how they view the person in the scenario that they were given. A final limitation was that main effects for influence
on altruism only focused on gender and no other factors were taken into account. Future studies should continue to explore the influence of weight
of an individual and food choice on perceived weight locus of control as well as other influences such as exercise, body mass index (BMI), and the
participants own weight condition. BMI and participants own weight condition could show how they perceive the individual because they may see
themselves in that individual. Exercise would also be important because there are people who can exercise and never seem to lose weight. Future
studies should also continue to explore the influence of participant gender and scenario gender on altruistic behaviors as well as race, ethnicity, and
age. Race and ethnicity should also be looked at in the future because Carr et al. (2008) have found that African American obese males are subject to
the least criticism within social gatherings. It can be seen that African American obese males will be helped more often than any other

Everyone has different ways to control their life, but not everything can be controlled by you. Some people have separate ways on determining the
outcomes of certain situations by influencing the actions of people and events. One person could depend and rely on outside influences for their
success or they could believe that they control their own life. I have an internal locus of control because of how independent and hardworking I am. My
everyday life has many examples of my internal locus of control.

Locus Of Control Attribution Style
The theoretical orientation of the assessment of the Locus of Control Attributional Style test measures whether the outcomes of our actions are
contingent on what we do (internal control orientation) or on events outside our personal control (external control orientation). An individual's
attribution style determines which forces are held responsible for their successes and failures. Both locus of control and attribution styles have a
significant impact on our motivation, expectations, self–esteem, risk–taking behavior, and even on the actual outcome of our actions. Participants

Essay about Locus of Control and Social Behaviour
Imagine, you just recently came down with a cold and you are feeling really sick. How did you end up getting sick in the first place, was it just due to
random chance, or was it because you were stressed and not watching your health? According to Julian Rotter's social learning theory, the two different
mentalities people have about how much influence they themselves have on their life events can be categorized into two different groups. Those with
internal control believe that they have control over their own behaviour and the subsequent outcomes. Conversely, those with external control more
often tend to believe that outcomes are beyond their control. The locus control concept of internal versus external control can be used to understand...

Freedom of movement in this case is taken to mean "...a person's generalized expectancy that any...related set of behaviours will lead to need
satisfaction" (Crowne, 2009). Evidence suggests that the relationship between expectancy (freedom of movement) and reinforcement or need values
to be multiplicative, but an ampersand is used instead because data on the relationship is still considered inconclusive (Crowne, 2009). Note that in
both cases, expectation plays a huge role in determining whether behaviour occurs. Regardless of how big a need or reinforcement, if expectation of
satisfaction in a given situation is zero or low, behaviour is unlikely to happen. The concept of external and internal control can be thought of as
having low or high expectations for situations that involves personal commitment or action. The primary concerns of this concept involve activities
that require one to make judgments about one's own skill or aptitude in a task. If one does not believe that they are skilled, and that any choices they
make will make any difference, than activities that are mostly skill based are highly unlikely to occur. Instead, people with external control will be
inclined to participate in activities that are more heavily luck based, because the expectancy for reinforcement (rewards) or a need fulfillment tend to be
higher than ability based activities. Consider the

Internal Locus Of Control: A Case Study
Have you ever heard the words internal locus of control? Do you what it means? An internal locus of control means that you believe you control the
circumstance (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). I shall share an incident about a tragedy that occurred in my life in regards to what I believed was internal
locus of control.
I was faced with a tragedy a few years ago. My mother was involved in a car accident. My family, arrived at the hospital to hear the news of her
death. It seemed liked a dream, I felt as if the room was spinning. Could this really be happening? My life changed in an instant. Honestly, at that
moment, I felt as if I had no control over anything in my life. Thankfully, my older siblings took control of the situation. Being ... Show more content on

Tons of what if scenarios ran rapid through my mind. What if, I had mom pick my daughter up from school that day? Maybe if I would have invited
her over for dinner that evening, things might have turned out differently. I could have changed the outcome, or so I believed. I felt like it was all my
fault.
Looking back, I controlled whether to give up on life, or grieve and move forward. Also, I controlled my emotions toward the driver that caused the
accident; I could hate him or offer forgiveness. Although, I was hurting, I tried to put myself in his shoes. I chose to take this circumstance to
improve my life. I needed a purpose, and desired for something meaningful. So, I changed from a career in banking to health care. Now, I am a
registered nurse and volunteer with children who lost a loved one. My experience helps me relate to them.
An article I read concludes my findings in regards to my internal locus of control. A person with an internal locus of control creates and conveys
plans for the future; they have a purpose in life. Even more, a strong sense of empathy, and regulation of behavior from within. My volunteer work,
gives me purpose. My future plans include finishing my degree, I am enrolled in classes and working toward completion. I had empathy for the
driver that killed my mother. No matter what happens to me in life, I try to find the positive. My behavior is regulated by morals and values instilled

Locus Of Control Research Paper
Locus of Control A person determines his/her expectancies from many different factors. Luck, fate, hard work and determination are all common
influences in a person's expectancy. In 1954 a psychologist named Julian Rotter began his study on expectancy. Expectancy is, as defined in
Psychology and Life: "The extent to which people believe their behaviors in particular situations will bring about rewards" (Gerrig 370). By 1966
Rotter had designed the locus of control. The locus of control is a questionnaire containing 13 questions that measures how a person views the causing
factors of a reward/achievement, as an internal influence or an external influence. Therefore, the test results are based on an internal–external scale. For
example, a person works really hard to get a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

External Locus Of Control
The Locus of control is what a person believe is in control of one's own life and what happens every day. Internal locus of control is defined as the
belief that a person controls their own destiny and what happens to them is their own doing. This means that they believe they have control over
what happens in their life and can affect change through hard work, decision making, and all of their actions. The external locus of control is
defined as the belief that things happen because of other people, luck, or a powerful being. This means that these type of people feel like there is a
predetermined destiny for everyone one and that no matter what choices we make we will end up at the same ending because we have little to no
control over it. I scored a 76 on my locus of control test and the description said that I am more of an internal locus of control and that I believe for
the most part I have power to affect the things that happen in my life. It went on to say that I still have some belief that thing could happen because
I happen to be in the right place at the right time and that could be a little lucky. I agree with this overall assessment because I do believe each person

External Locus Of Control
There are two different locus of control. One is internal and one is external. If you have an internal locus of control you feel in control of your life
and the events that occur in them. If you have an external locus of control you feel that you do not have control over your life or the events that occur
in them. Depending on which locus of control you have can be directly related to your self–esteem and self–concept. People who have high self–esteem
and self–concept are going to have an internal locus of control. Whereas, people who have low self–esteem and self–concept will most likely have an
external locus of control (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). I think that most people do not have an internal locus of control in all situations. For
example, in a natural disaster or personal tragedy, you cannot control the events happening around you. The only thing you can control is your
reaction to these events. I myself am a bit of a control freak. I like to be in control of my life and the situations or experiences I may be involved in.
In situations where I have no control I can get very upset. It has taken me a long time to realize that I cannot control everything and everyone in my

Locus Of Control: Listening In The Classroom
Locus of control is one person's beliefs about what controls the outcomes of the things they do in life. With locus of control, there are two types;
internal and external. Internal locus is the belief that what happens is their own fault and that they have control over it. For example, if a student with
an internal locus control gets a perfect score, they will say it was because of their effort and studying. On the other hand, if a student with an external
locus of control fails, he will blame external force, such as a fault in the test or the teacher's supposed incompetence. People with an external locus of
control believe events in life occur because of 'luck, chance, or other powerful forces.' A person with an internal locus of control... Show more content

whereas externals believe that feedback to be strictly due to forces outside of their control (Schultz & Schultz, 2013). Locus of control is a concept
developed by Julian Rotter as part of his own social–learning approach to psychology. Haynes and Ayliffe (1991) utilize a theory of internal and
external attribution that parallels Rotter's locus of control, specifying attribution as an important mental process when addressing self accountability.
Internal attribution is behavioral change that is instigated internally by the individual, such as a conscious decision to modify behavior. External
attribution is change that is caused by outside factors such as medication or disease (Haynes & Ayliffe, 1991). An excellent example of these concepts

One commonly occurring response is an assumption by the alcoholic that they have no control over their drinking and that any attempt to change it
will be pointless; an attitude known as learned helplessness. Learned helplessness is detrimental to the internal attribution process because it impedes
the internal locus of control; however it is fed by the external locus of control (Haynes & Ayliffe, 1991). For example: addicts like the previously
mentioned alcoholic are frequently presented with biological causes for their addictions. While these factors cannot be proven as the sole causation, it
is not uncommon for physicians or therapists to point to them as the cause of the maladaptive behavior, leading them to believe it is out of their
control. This essentially hands them an excuse, or feeling of helplessness that discourages any type of internal attribution. Social–learning based
counseling practices that focus on the whole picture, helping addicts to understand that these predispositions can be overridden by cognitive processes,
can assist in this situation. Furthermore, recent research appears intent on finding biological causes for everything as opposed to considering all

The Rotter's Locus of control scale has an internal consistency of about 0.65 to 0.79. The test–retest reliability ranged between 0.49 and 0.83. With
regards to validity, there is a correlation between Rotter's Locus of control scale and the Marlowe–Crowne Social Desirability Scale which ranges

The purpose of the assessment was to see how I not only scored, but showed in what areas how I think and feel towards certain areas. In the Locus
of Control assessment I scored a seven. The result indicate that a high score indicates an external locus of control while a low score indicates an

External Locus Of Control
Locus of control is what you do and act upon a situation. Taking responsibility for everything you do or try out. Internal is when you take
responsibility for what you do and except the consequences if you were wrong, but if you did the right thing it can benefit you. Then there's
external and it's when you blame everyone else for something you didn't do. If you don't study for a test and you fail that test and you blame your
teachers and for nobody teaching you good that's called external. If you do study for the test and you're ready and you ace the test because you get
older you take on more responsibilities and nobody has to constantly elucidate everything to you. External locus can be changed by being responsible

Locus Of Control
Introduction
Our perception about where control lies can have an impact on the way we think and the way we associate with our changing environment, which can
affect the way we attribute success and failure to things we have control over or to situations outside our control. Therefore, the locus of control we
choose has a strong bearing on our long–term success. In this essay, I am going to discuss locus of control, describes what my locus of control score
means and details the impact that I believe my locus of control will have on my success in this degree program.
Definition of terms
Locus of control is a study dated back to 1960s with Julian Rotter's inquiry into how individual's behavior and attitudes influence the outcomes of
their lives. According to Bauer Talya and Erdogan Berrin (2009), the locus of control is the standard to which people feel responsible for their
behaviors or from the forces that are external to them. There are two sides to the locus of control, namely internal ... Show more content on

The result I got from the test carried out shows that I have internal locus control, which means that I take responsibility for my actions, whether
those actions or the end results come out to be positive or not, but I will not accept outside influence for the outcomes, no matter what that is. So, I
believe that in this degree program my efforts toward everything I do will count and will determine the level of success I will achieve. The impact
of this decision on my success is that it will drive me to set achievable goals, study hard, and make every second count toward my success. Also, my
locus of control will influence me to develop my decision–making and problem–solving skills in order to gain more confidence and be in control of the
situations and lastly, pay attention to self–talk in order to come out with flying

Locus Of Control Essay
After taking the assessment of the Locus of Control Assessment, my note was 20/20. It means that external events have no effect on my life. In other
words, I can say, for sure, to have an internal locus of control. Those who have the same way to analyze and tend positively, value the effort and
personal skill. Those with an internal locus of control tend naturally to accept the responsibility and blame for their failures and selections. According
to Monroe and Oliviere (2007), people believe that their behaviors are guiding by their personal choices and efforts unit. This attitude can make you
depressed, which I think is negative for an internal locus of control. Decisions made it, must be correct, to ensure that the right thing was carried out.
Those who have control of the personal way to look the life, understand, if something is not as planned, may have had something to do wrong reasoning
of them. We, with external focus of control, believe that the perception that luck or external forces that are beyond personal control determine their

control is a person that believes that their rewards in life are guided by their own efforts and decisions. If that person doesn't succeed at something,
they believe it is due to their lack of effort. For if that student with internal locus of control doesn't receive a well enough grade on his/her exam, he or

much someone studies. The two types of locus of control are external and internal. If you have a more internal locus of control you are most likely to
be more successful than people with an external locus of control are. IF someone with an external locus of control gets bad grades with D's and F's

Locus Of Control Developed In The 1950's By Dian B Rotter
The process of locus of control is an individual's beliefs about what determines their rewards or outcomes in life. It was developed in the 1950's by
Julian B. Rotter. Two examples of locus of control are internal locus of control and external locus of control. It is important to have a locus of control
because the students with an internal locus of control tend to study longer and do better academically, while students with an external locus of control
tend to blame their surroundings like their teachers, friends, and family.

Internal And External Locus Of Control
In the context of locus of control, internal and external locus of control are two characteristics that influence students' success and failure. Those
characteristics have been explained by some experts and there are some comparisons which have been done related to the aspects of internal and
external locus of control. Obviously, there is no specific hypothesis related to aspects of locus of control, but Burger (1983:76) categorizes three
factors as the aspects of locus of control: perception of internal control, perception of controlled by powerful others, and perception of chance.
However, Gihonsooly and Sihirvan (2011:240) have summarized some researches about locus of control related on individuals behavior in some
aspects such as anxiety, academic procrastination and so on in table 5 below:
Those comparisons above represent the three aspects of locus of control; perception of internal control, perception of LOC that is controlled by
powerful others, and perception of chance, which can be differentiated into 5 sub–aspects such as ability, responsibility, change, environment and stress
(student's stress). Those sub–aspects above will be the indicators of locus of control. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

From the Locus of Control assessment, I learned that I have an internal locus of control which means that I believe my actions influence events and

Introduction
I took the assessment for the classroom and I do agree with the assessment results. I tend to have a high optimistic outlook on just about all aspects
of life. I have experienced huge obstacles in life, and so now everything, I feel, is pretty easy to overcome, with the correct attitude. I know there is
always a reason; if I can identify the issues, I can overcome them. I feel this assessment of me also speaks to a specific attitude I have about things or I
can attribute it to my personal values.
My personal values are simply ways in which I think about the world around me, and it refers to ethics and a person's particular conduct. Values are

Self-Efficacy And Locus Of Control
People see and act in the world in particular ways based on behavior, attitudes and understanding in society. These factors can all contribute how
people see people in the world. Different factors contribute into how people view things such as; locus of control, self–efficacy, social and cultural
difference and relationships.
Self–efficacy and Locus of control
Self–efficacy and locus of control is a constant evolve process that begins when we are born and continues even when we are at an old age. The
higher confidence level that I have towards people, actions and anything else I do, I tend to give more effort into things and be a better person
overall. When I have high levels of confidence, I feel a rush through my body and I feel like a new person. When people tend to have high
confidence levels, they tend to accomplish anything that they put their mind to. For a personal example, I had a weight loss journey that forever
changed my life. Before, when I was obese, I saw the world as loss of color, grey, icky and nothing to live for. Now that my total self–efficacy and
locus control has drastically changed, I see and find things in this world exciting. That effected my behavior a lot because it has caused me to be
kind hearted to all people, be more motivated to try new things and it just has changed me into a better person that I never knew that was there. Not
only did my weight loss affect me but other that were close to me were building their self–esteems and starting to

What Is Locus Control?
What is locus control? Locus control is how a student thinks they should be rewarded in outcomes in life. There are two different types of locus
control, the first being internal locus control. Internal locus control is where the student thinks they believe their rewards are given by their decisions.
The second type is external locus control. External locus control is where the student thinks that they are rewarded by luck or by chance. Locus
control is very important to a success of a student, because it determines how hard a student works. The ten habits of a successful student are
extremely important. The first one is getting organized. Getting organized is important, because you need to know what you are going to do and when
you are going to do it. The second one is do not multitask. Just admit, you are not good at it. When you learn to get organized you can multitask. The

class. One thing that you cannot do is snack on sugar, so snack one nutritious foods that have protein in them. Protein keeps your body going
throughout the day. The third one is putting your phone away during school hours. Your phone will distract you, so get through your school day
without getting distracted by your phone. The fourth one is to take detailed notes in and out of school. When you write down notes you will remember
the information better. The last one is to follow directions. Listen to what your teacher directs you to do, not only will you understand things better but
you are also showing your teacher respect and that you understand what to

Locus of Control and Explanatory Style
The University of Pennsylvania website, Authentic Happiness, was developed by the Positive Psychology Center with the purpose of providing free
resources where people can learn about Positive Psychology (Authentic Happiness). Positive Psychology, according to the Positive Psychology Center,
is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. The field is founded on the belief that people want to lead
meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. The Optimism Test
and Satisfaction with Life Scale are two questionnaires offered on the website. "The Optimism Test measures optimism about the future and the
Satisfaction with Life Scale measures life satisfaction" (Authentic Happiness). The purpose of taking these tests is to examine the similarities and
differences I have with my peers, whether or not if I am in agreement with the scores and determine if there is a correlation between the scores of
each test. "The Satisfaction with Life Scale was developed to assess satisfaction with people 's lives as a whole. The scale does not assess
satisfaction with specific life domains, such as health or finances, but allows subjects to integrate and weigh these domains in whatever way they
choose" (Positive Psychology Center). The score range for the test is 5 to 35. My overall score of 24 is an average score.

Examples Of Locus Of Control
Locus of Control is considered to be an important aspect of personality. The concept was developed originally Julian Rotter in the 1950s (Rotter, 1966).
Locus of Control refers to an individual's perception about the underlying main causes of events in his/her life. The full name Rotter gave the construct
was Locus of Control of Reinforcement. In giving it this name, Rotter was bridging behavioural and cognitive psychology. Rotter's view was that
behaviour was largely guided by "reinforcements" (rewards and punishments) and that through contingencies such as rewards and punishments,
individuals come to hold beliefs about what causes their actions. These beliefs, in turn, guide what kinds of attitudes and behaviours people
adopt.Locus of control is conceptualised as referring to a unidimensional continuum, ranging from external to internal: External Locus of Control
Individual believes that his/her behaviour is guided by fate, luck, or other external circumstances Internal Locus of Control Individual believes that his
/her behaviour is guided by his/her personal decisions and efforts. In simplistic terms, a more internal locus of control is generally seen as... Show more

Locus Of Control
The Internal and External Scale of reinforcement, also referred to as the Locus of Control scale was developed by Julian Rotter in 1954. It measures
the extent in which people view an informal relationship between their personal efforts and environmental issues (McGraw–Hill, 2018). Internal Locus
of Control, indicates that rather the events in a person's life are good or bad, they are controlled by factors that are beyond their control, such as their
attitude, effort or preparation (Grinnell, n.d). For example, if an athlete loses a competition, it may be that they didn't prepare adequately. (Grinnell,
n.d) Rotter developed the questionnaires in 1966, which generalizes expectancies for internal, as opposed to external control of reinforcement. The
scores scale from 0 to 13. A low score represents an internal control and a high score represent external control. Individuals with an internal locus of
control maintain that their responses determine the compensation that they gain. Those with an external locus of control think that their behavior is
irrelevant and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

responses would demonstrate trust on 12 questions and strongly disagree and disagree responses would demonstrate trust on 13 questions. The 25
questions are calculated so that high scores express the presence of interpersonal trust and low scores express a generalized expectancy of distrust

me, I am more of an internal locus of control guy. I believe that, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." For example, I work at
WinCo Foods as a cashier, if I do my job with my full attention and focus on what I do than I will not lose any money from my till and I will not get
fired. But, if I don't focus when I count money or if I miscode the produce department number than I will get fired and that is all upon me because I
didn't do what I am supposed to do and get fired. At that situation, I believe that I am the one who did mistake and because of that I got fired, and I am

How Locus Of Control Affects Academic Success And Health

  • 1. Locus Of Control Thesis Question: How is it possible that our attitudes and values can affect our economic status? Hypothesis: Internal locus of control refers to the perception that we have control over what happens to us and what happens to others (37). I believe that every person, whether they were born into a rich family or had to work from the day they could walk until the day they die, has potential to succeed. No one ever wants to take responsibility for their failure, he/she would rather place the blame on someone else. The individual cannot take all of the blame for their situation, most of the blame is put on the group to which the individuals belong to, which in this case is the poverty class (32). It is said that the group of poverty as a whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Locus Of Control When we look at the research done by Mamlin, Harris, & Case in "A Methodological Analysis of Research on Locus of Control and Learning Disabilities: Rethinking a Common Assumption" one thing that we have learned through this research is that children or students with learning disabilities do not necessarily have an internal locus of control but rather an extra locus of control. "This means they often view their lives as being controlled by external forces. Their motivational problems stem from three interrelated areas: external locus of control, negative attributions, and learned helplessness" (Mamlin, Harris, & Case, 2001). By understanding how the locus of control works with children in students with learning disabilities we can adapt our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Innovations introduced in this action research are things such as online videos and techniques that can be watched and used by viewing them on the Internet. One of the main innovations that can be used for this action research is simply encouragement and egg knowledge meant with a student with a learning disability. But giving them encouragement and what they do and what they are learning builds their confidence to the point that they are not discouraged to try new things. Another innovation that is been used in this action research is by taking the new vocabulary and ability to communicate in involving it with something that the subject is interested in. In this action research new techniques in communication and vocabulary were used by incorporating these techniques into basketball and baseball through their communication to use the techniques that were learn each day. Getting this young man the opportunity to use what he is learning with confidence by using it in an environment that he is comfortable in such as basketball he is been able to understand and correlate the difference in this communication and use it outside of that environment. Being able to recall the information that was learned while playing basketball in communicating and being able to take that information on how he communicated in putting it in everyday life is one way that this innovation has worked very well. This is also one of the adjustments that we had made in order to allow this subject to see the different types of communication that take place in and out of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some individuals believe that they are the reason behind everything that occurs to them. Other individuals believe in a higher power that predestines them to a certain fate. There are still yet some individuals who fall in between both aspects of personality studies. A non–complex description of this is how my religion can be evaluated through the locus of control. I know a tad surprising, but religion just like in many aspects of the world places an enormous amount of emphasis on what I say or do each day. When I go to Sunday mass, I feel more relaxed about what is yet to come the next day because I have made the effort to acknowledge my rights as well as my wrongs in front of God. While on the other hand, when something doesn't go my way I feel the need to condemn God and ask Him, "Why have you placed this obstacle in my way?" This brings me to my research question; does my external locus of control affect my behavior? After acquiring some knowledge on the topic in class and from previous readings, I have hypothesized that external locus of control does affect behavior. I will now introduce locus of control, provide evidence that supports my hypothesis, and review the main aspects of my argument. In order to comprehend external locus of control we must learn its pair, internal locus of control. It could be, that better–educated workers had more discretionary income that they could spend shopping (no income data). Perhaps more educated workers had jobs that afforded them more autonomy at work and thus more opportunity to engage in undetected Internet abuse. c.Work place norms was not measured in this study and this might play a significant role in workplace Internet abuse. • 5. The Locus of Control Contsruct Essay Locus of Control, originally conceptualized by Julian Rotter (1966), has been found to be critical to numerous studies. Within psychology, it is considered to be a generalized expectancy regarding the forces that determine reinforcement. Individuals with internal orientation perceive rewards as contingent based on personal behavior, whereas those with external orientation attribute reinforcement received to external factors such as chance and powerful others (Levenson 1981). This essay examines the nature and significance of this psychological construct, especially in academic achievement and health domains. Additionally, it has been argued that high internality is positively associated with leadership while high scores of powerful others... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The creator, Leveson (1972), found that participants with chance orientation shared traits which could not be distinguished by the P or I scales. Further, the study in anti–pollution activism also support the validity. Responses from participants demonstrated that involvement was different for those having high scores on the P scale, compared with the Chance scale (Levenson 1974). Therefore, the Levenson Scale is more sufficiently reliable and appropriate. As an important predictor of health behaviors, generally, Locus of Control construct supplies health problems and treatments with essential insights. There is evidence to suggest that patients scoring high on the I scale might be better suited to ameliorative and preventive treatment for the sake of recovery (Strickland 1974 cited in Levenson 1981). Additionally, patients' participation in health treatment cannot be emphasized more. Individuals that view themselves as masters of destiny are more likely to engage in better adjustment since they have positive expectations and self–control which are pivotal determinants with regard to health outcomes (Wallston and Wallston 1978). Critics might argue that the correlations between Locus of Control construct and health issue are not significant. Some researchers, however, suggest that this construct has low predictive power since it fails to predict some aspects of health, including survival rates with regard to cancer patients, controls of metabolic in diabetes ... • 6. Rotter's Locus Of Control Scale Test Analysis Rotter's Locus of Control Scale Test, is a test that measures the belief of controlling outcomes in people's lives. The Locus of Control Scale test divides control into two categories; internal and external. People with internal control believe that their actions decide outcomes in their lives, while people with external control believe that outcomes are beyond their control, which they can't influence. In the following essay, the results of my Locus of Control Scale Test will be discussed, along with the effects of control on myleadership behavior and how my control responds to different leadership styles. As a leader, my internal locus of control drives me to always be improving. Since I have an internal locus of control, I don't need outside influences to motivate me. Passion, and drive comes from within and I know the actions I take will have a direct effect on my outcome. When I lead, I know that my actions will have a direct effect on my outcome, either positively or negatively. Due to having self–awareness, I am accountable for my actions and place a high importance on making correct decisions. In management, nothing happens without engagement, and goals are not reached without motivation. A Laissez–Faire management style may just get bye, but nothing will ever progress. A Laissez–faire management style is directly related to an external locus of control. This type of management would believe they are unable to control, or influence the performance of employees, therefore there is a belief that results will happen on their own. When the results are not achieved, this type of manager will not take responsibility for poor results. Instead, this manager would blame his followers for not completing a task successfully. This laissez–faire management style is in direct conflict with a leader with an internal locus. A leader with an internal locus would engage with his followers, continually work at the development of each individual, and take full responsibility for unsuccessful results. • 7. Locus Of Control Abstract Obesity has become a rising epidemic in recent decades (Manson & Bassuk, 2003) and it is often attributed to unhealthy eating or overeating (Puhl & Heuer, 2010). Things like food choice, especially unhealthy food choices, can attribute to how an individuals weight locus of control is perceived because unhealthy foods are often priced lower than healthy foods (Cummins, 2005). This can show that since an obese individual is willing to buy less expensive food that they are indifferent to their food habits (Cummins, 2005; Puhl & Heuer, 2010). The purpose of the present study was to explore the hypotheses that weight condition (obese, skinny) and food condition (healthy, unhealthy) influenced perceived weight locus of control, and participant... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One limitation is that the main effects on perceived weight locus of control were weight of individual in scenario, however the weight of the participant was not taken into account. This could cause a confound because based on the weight of the individual as well as the way they self–identify with their body could influence how they view the person in the scenario that they were given. A final limitation was that main effects for influence on altruism only focused on gender and no other factors were taken into account. Future studies should continue to explore the influence of weight of an individual and food choice on perceived weight locus of control as well as other influences such as exercise, body mass index (BMI), and the participants own weight condition. BMI and participants own weight condition could show how they perceive the individual because they may see themselves in that individual. Exercise would also be important because there are people who can exercise and never seem to lose weight. Future studies should also continue to explore the influence of participant gender and scenario gender on altruistic behaviors as well as race, ethnicity, and age. Race and ethnicity should also be looked at in the future because Carr et al. (2008) have found that African American obese males are subject to the least criticism within social gatherings. • 11. Essay about Locus of Control and Social Behaviour Imagine, you just recently came down with a cold and you are feeling really sick. How did you end up getting sick in the first place, was it just due to random chance, or was it because you were stressed and not watching your health? According to Julian Rotter's social learning theory, the two different mentalities people have about how much influence they themselves have on their life events can be categorized into two different groups. Those with internal control believe that they have control over their own behaviour and the subsequent outcomes. Conversely, those with external control more often tend to believe that outcomes are beyond their control. The locus control concept of internal versus external control can be used to understand... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Freedom of movement in this case is taken to mean "...a person's generalized expectancy that any...related set of behaviours will lead to need satisfaction" (Crowne, 2009). Evidence suggests that the relationship between expectancy (freedom of movement) and reinforcement or need values to be multiplicative, but an ampersand is used instead because data on the relationship is still considered inconclusive (Crowne, 2009). Note that in both cases, expectation plays a huge role in determining whether behaviour occurs. Regardless of how big a need or reinforcement, if expectation of satisfaction in a given situation is zero or low, behaviour is unlikely to happen. The concept of external and internal control can be thought of as having low or high expectations for situations that involves personal commitment or action. The primary concerns of this concept involve activities that require one to make judgments about one's own skill or aptitude in a task. If one does not believe that they are skilled, and that any choices they make will make any difference, than activities that are mostly skill based are highly unlikely to occur. Instead, people with external control will be inclined to participate in activities that are more heavily luck based, because the expectancy for reinforcement (rewards) or a need fulfillment tend to be higher than ability based activities. Also, I controlled my emotions toward the driver that caused the accident; I could hate him or offer forgiveness. Although, I was hurting, I tried to put myself in his shoes. I chose to take this circumstance to improve my life. I needed a purpose, and desired for something meaningful. So, I changed from a career in banking to health care. Luck, fate, hard work and determination are all common influences in a person's expectancy. In 1954 a psychologist named Julian Rotter began his study on expectancy. Expectancy is, as defined in Psychology and Life: "The extent to which people believe their behaviors in particular situations will bring about rewards" (Gerrig 370). By 1966 Rotter had designed the locus of control. The locus of control is a questionnaire containing 13 questions that measures how a person views the causing factors of a reward/achievement, as an internal influence or an external influence. • 15. External Locus Of Control The Locus of control is what a person believe is in control of one's own life and what happens every day. Internal locus of control is defined as the belief that a person controls their own destiny and what happens to them is their own doing. This means that they believe they have control over what happens in their life and can affect change through hard work, decision making, and all of their actions. The external locus of control is defined as the belief that things happen because of other people, luck, or a powerful being. This means that these type of people feel like there is a predetermined destiny for everyone one and that no matter what choices we make we will end up at the same ending because we have little to no control over it. I scored a 76 on my locus of control test and the description said that I am more of an internal locus of control and that I believe for the most part I have power to affect the things that happen in my life. It went on to say that I still have some belief that thing could happen because I happen to be in the right place at the right time and that could be a little lucky. • 16. External Locus Of Control There are two different locus of control. One is internal and one is external. If you have an internal locus of control you feel in control of your life and the events that occur in them. If you have an external locus of control you feel that you do not have control over your life or the events that occur in them. Depending on which locus of control you have can be directly related to your self–esteem and self–concept. People who have high self–esteem and self–concept are going to have an internal locus of control. Whereas, people who have low self–esteem and self–concept will most likely have an external locus of control (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). I think that most people do not have an internal locus of control in all situations. For example, in a natural disaster or personal tragedy, you cannot control the events happening around you. The only thing you can control is your reaction to these events. I myself am a bit of a control freak. I like to be in control of my life and the situations or experiences I may be involved in. In situations where I have no control I can get very upset. It has taken me a long time to realize that I cannot control everything and everyone in my life. Listening in the classroom is probably an obvious thing, but it does help a lot. Ask questions. Many students, who are failing aren't asking questions or getting involved in the classroom because they are either self–conscious or 'too cool' to ask questions. It is okay to be wrong, you can only help yourself and others. I'm going to be completely honest, I'm not very organized. In the first quarter of the year, I had two F's and three D's for the longest time. Towards the end of the quarter, I realized I needed to straighten up because my grades will stay there for the rest of my life. I started using a planner and actually studying, I had brought the F's and D's to two B's, three C's, and one D. Starting in the second quarter, I do not want a repeat, so I'm going to use this essay as a wake–up call. I am in control of the outcomes I create. I recently bought a planner and am trying to use it as much as possible. Drawing in class is unbelievably helpful because I can be drawing, hear something and jot it down somewhere on the paper. Then when I look at the drawing later while studying, it makes me think about what the teacher was talking about. Another problem I have is sleep; I don't get enough of it. But I have ... • 21. Locus Of Control Essay whereas externals believe that feedback to be strictly due to forces outside of their control (Schultz & Schultz, 2013). Locus of control is a concept developed by Julian Rotter as part of his own social–learning approach to psychology. Haynes and Ayliffe (1991) utilize a theory of internal and external attribution that parallels Rotter's locus of control, specifying attribution as an important mental process when addressing self accountability. Internal attribution is behavioral change that is instigated internally by the individual, such as a conscious decision to modify behavior. External attribution is change that is caused by outside factors such as medication or disease (Haynes & Ayliffe, 1991). An excellent example of these concepts is an alcoholic who is told ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One commonly occurring response is an assumption by the alcoholic that they have no control over their drinking and that any attempt to change it will be pointless; an attitude known as learned helplessness. Learned helplessness is detrimental to the internal attribution process because it impedes the internal locus of control; however it is fed by the external locus of control (Haynes & Ayliffe, 1991). For example: addicts like the previously mentioned alcoholic are frequently presented with biological causes for their addictions. While these factors cannot be proven as the sole causation, it is not uncommon for physicians or therapists to point to them as the cause of the maladaptive behavior, leading them to believe it is out of their control. This essentially hands them an excuse, or feeling of helplessness that discourages any type of internal attribution. Social–learning based counseling practices that focus on the whole picture, helping addicts to understand that these predispositions can be overridden by cognitive processes, can assist in this situation. Furthermore, recent research appears intent on finding biological causes for everything as opposed to considering all contributing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Locus Of Control Introduction Our perception about where control lies can have an impact on the way we think and the way we associate with our changing environment, which can affect the way we attribute success and failure to things we have control over or to situations outside our control. Therefore, the locus of control we choose has a strong bearing on our long–term success. In other words, I can say, for sure, to have an internal locus of control. Those who have the same way to analyze and tend positively, value the effort and personal skill. Those with an internal locus of control tend naturally to accept the responsibility and blame for their failures and selections. According to Monroe and Oliviere (2007), people believe that their behaviors are guiding by their personal choices and efforts unit. Those characteristics have been explained by some experts and there are some comparisons which have been done related to the aspects of internal and external locus of control. Obviously, there is no specific hypothesis related to aspects of locus of control, but Burger (1983:76) categorizes three factors as the aspects of locus of control: perception of internal control, perception of controlled by powerful others, and perception of chance. However, Gihonsooly and Sihirvan (2011:240) have summarized some researches about locus of control related on individuals behavior in some aspects such as anxiety, academic procrastination and so on in table 5 below: Those comparisons above represent the three aspects of locus of control; perception of internal control, perception of LOC that is controlled by powerful others, and perception of chance, which can be differentiated into 5 sub–aspects such as ability, responsibility, change, environment and stress (student's stress). Positive Psychology, according to the Positive Psychology Center, is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. The field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. The Optimism Test and Satisfaction with Life Scale are two questionnaires offered on the website. "The Optimism Test measures optimism about the future and the Satisfaction with Life Scale measures life satisfaction" (Authentic Happiness). The scale does not assess satisfaction with specific life domains, such as health or finances, but allows subjects to integrate and weigh these domains in whatever way they choose" (Positive Psychology Center). Locus of Control refers to an individual's perception about the underlying main causes of events in his/her life. The full name Rotter gave the construct was Locus of Control of Reinforcement. In giving it this name, Rotter was bridging behavioural and cognitive psychology. Rotter's view was that behaviour was largely guided by "reinforcements" (rewards and punishments) and that through contingencies such as rewards and punishments, individuals come to hold beliefs about what causes their actions. These beliefs, in turn, guide what kinds of attitudes and behaviours people adopt.Locus of control is conceptualised as referring to a unidimensional continuum, ranging from external to internal: External Locus of Control Individual believes that his/her behaviour is guided by fate, luck, or other external circumstances Internal Locus of Control Individual believes that his /her behaviour is guided by his/her personal decisions and efforts. Internal Locus of Control, indicates that rather the events in a person's life are good or bad, they are controlled by factors that are beyond their control, such as their attitude, effort or preparation (Grinnell, n.d). For example, if an athlete loses a competition, it may be that they didn't prepare adequately. (Grinnell, n.d) Rotter developed the questionnaires in 1966, which generalizes expectancies for internal, as opposed to external control of reinforcement. The scores scale from 0 to 13.
