The representations in woman
1. Luca campodifiori 14/10/18
How far do the representations in the set edition of Woman’s Realm 1965 reflect
social and cultural contexts?
The representations in woman’s realm reflex that of the consumerism movement in the
1960s. Advertisements such as the Australian sultanas advert uses the technique of making
the reader think they want the product rather than need it. In this advert we see a woman
surfing in the background holding a plate of food. This would appeal to people because
surfing is considered a skilful and impressive sport and so someone might desire the life
depicted on the advert and associate the product with that life. This also reflex’s that of the
sexual revolution. The surfer is a woman, this would impact the audience as it would be
inviting to woman as it makes a statement about a woman’s ability and what it means to be
a woman. It would also invite a male audience as she is wearing a red bikini. This connotes
sexuality and love.
The magazine does not appear to be affected by the cultural revolution. The front cover
features traditional winter clothing and not the sort of cloves that hipsters or people
influenced by the cultural revolution would wear. The font, serif, is very traditional and old
fashioned, it is associated with the upper classes and status. And so there are few
denotations to suggest that the magazine is affected by the cultural revolution.
