The first woman
1. Luca Campodifiori Reading Between the Lines 19/9/18
1. The first woman’s magazinewas realised in 1693, it was called Woman
Mercury.
2. The writer finds the pictures meticulously styled, “with the intensity of a
five-year-old drawing in a colour book”.
3. The writer has an upset tone; she feels that woman are being
misrepresented as objects however she is not angry and does not want
these magazines to end. “The more I considered it, the more I
questioned it”. she is considerate of both sides of her own argument.
4. The writer is annoyed with the way that women are objectified in these
magazines she feels that there is too much advertising and pressureto
look like an attractive woman. Instead shewants morestories for
woman who have inspiring stories to tell.
5. 1. This means that society believes that to be attractive as a woman you
have to have materialistic things.
2. magazines offer a falsehope when excessively advertising.
3. society runs on money and the gaining of it.
4. woman though these adverts have been taught to be self-conscious of
themselves and so feel the need to buy the products.
6. Option 2- I agree with this to an extent. Yes, the images put out in order
to advertise would definitely make a person self-conscious about
themselves. But the amount of adverts, of this nature, around us makes
a person learn to ignore and black them out. Despite this, what the
adverts promiseis very unhealthy because when you buy the product
and useit, you will inevitably not look like the photoshoped finger on
the advert. This could lead to self-consciousness and even depression.
