War of 1812 Essay
The War of 1812      The United States of America began to see the
effects of Anglo–French War by the early 1800's. This European quarrel began affecting the United
States shipping industry. Britain and France were violating neutral shipping rights of American
merchants. They thought of America as weak due to inadequate time the nation had to develop.
These violations were the first and primary provoking factors that led to war with Britain. There was
reason that Britain became the target of US military rather that France. Britain has influenced
Indians around Lake Michigan to resist white settlement. This was one of the primary reasons the
English were chosen as our foe. Britain had the Indians do this as an...show more content...
Lietinant–Colonol John Harvey chose 700 soldiers 8th and 49th regiments. These men arrived at the
American camp at 2:00 am June 6, 1813, incidentally King George III's birthday. The English forces
set there bayonets forward and ran upon the camp while whooping like Indians. Much to their
surprise there were mysteriously only some smoldering campfires and some cooks around them. The
British realized what had happened: the order had been made for the American troops to sleep at
higher ground for the night with their arms by their sides. American troops spotted the British while
running down upon the camp and had very little time to attempt to scramble into place. Their time
wasn't a lot, but it was much more than the British had. The surprise element was not only lost, but
had backfired on the British. The 49th regiment split left under the command of Major James
Ogilivie; the 8th regiment had split right. Neither regiment had adequate time to form a line there
before the barrage of fire descending upon them. At this crucial moment, Major Plenderleath, with
about 20 men of the 49th, darted up the hill towards four of the American guns that were mounted
on Smith's knoll (where the lion monument stands now). They had managed to shoot two rounds of
this artillery before being seized by the British, but the artillery was to play a vital part in the victory
of the battle. Consequently, American troops suffered much more of a loss than they would have if
they had prevented the

The War of 1812 was a war between Britain and the United States fought primarily in Upper
Canada. It had many causes, few which involved British North America. The results of the war
include the fact that there was no clear winner or loser among them. The only real losers in the
situation were the Natives in the region. They were driven out of their lands and customs. None of
the borders was changed by the war, though many attempts were made. The Treaty of Ghent, which
ended the war, did nothing to advance the state of the countries. It went so far as to end the war and
put things back the way that they were, but the main causes of the conflict were not addressed or

He was valiant in protecting his people and led them courageously in battle; even though he did not
have to engage in the fighting himself, he joined his troops. He was killed in the Battle of
Moravian town on 5 October 1813. After his death, survivors retreated and later signed a cease–fire
with the Americans. Another highly regarded individual as a result is Laura Secord. When she
overheard American soldiers, she rushed to tell someone in charge of the British force. On the way,
she came across Natives who blocked the oncoming troops. Because of her dangerous trek, the
Americans were turned away at Beaver Dam.
With the American offences being stopped, and heroic men coming forth, Canadian nationalism was
on the rise. Since most of the war had been fought in Upper Canada, retaining of the vast majority
was as much a moral victory as a material one. The end of the war brought significant immigration
from the United States into Upper and Lower Canada. Canadians resented this because they still
regarded Americans as the enemy. Being banded together in theWar of 1812 forced the people of the
Canadas to feel as though they were a unified nation. The English–speaking Canadians could better

Although the American's had been "independent" from the British since the end of the
Revolutionary War, the British continued to harass and mettle in American affairs. While Madison
was seeking reelection the War Hawks in Congress had declared war on Britain in June 18. On paper
the rag–tag American was seen as incapable of defeating the superior British forces for a second
time. However this war would have an unexpected results as neither side would be the "victory".
Even the United States wasn't able to gain any new territory to their growing collection and the
borders were returned to the way they had been (status quo antebellum), Americans were able to
declare victory in the War of 1812 because they were able to enter a...show more content...
In 1807 Thomas Jefferson would declare for the halt of American trade with Europe with the
Embargo Act. However this would hurt Americans because they had cut off their only source of
trade and thus the Embargo Act was replaced with the Non–Intercourse Act of 1809. This act stated
that the US will trade with everyone but the French and the British, but that they would resume
trade with them as soon as these two stop violating American rights. The stubborn powers won't
budge leading to Macon's Bill #2. This said the US would trade with everyone but would stop
trade with one of the two powers if one of them stop violating American's rights. Britain would act
on this quickly to snubbed French trade. However by the war's end the American had began to
rely on American made good rather than on good manufacture in Europe and thus they gain a
sense of economic independence. The American were always able to declare a sense of victory
by being able to hold its own against the huge global power Britain. The US was able to gain a
great sense of pride by being able to hold their own against a powerful British force. Although the
Americans were able to defeat to defeat the British in the Revolutionary War to gain their
independence they were still seen as a weakling in Britain's eyes. Because the British viewed affairs
in America as insignificant they would not send their premier forces to fight against the rag–tag

In 1812, The U.S. declared war on Great Britain. However, was this war really a necessary war? I
believe this war was not necessary for three reasons. The first reason the war was not necessary
was because the British did not want war with the U.S.. The British were already in a war with
France and this wasn't a fair war for them. The second reason the war of 1812 wasn't justifiable was
because the British were even willing to stop interfering with American Wars so the war wouldnt
start. They sent a message to America saying they would stop interfering with American shipping,
but sadly it arrived after the declaration of war. One of the reasons America declared war was
because of the BRitish impressment of American ships and sailors. The third

The War of 1812 was a war fought between the United States and Great Britain. Participants in the
War of 1812 also included Canada, Ireland, and Native Americans. Most Native Americans sided
with the British, believing that if the British won the war, that Americans would stop expanding
west and encroaching on Native American land. Two brothers, Tecumseh and Tenskatawa, also
known as the Prophet, fought for the British and lead Native Americans into battle. The majority of
the world viewed this war, not as a separate war, but as continuing conflict of the Napoleonic Wars.
The United States viewed the War of 1812 as a second war with the British and a repeated fight for
independence. The fronts, on which the war was raged, included battles at...show more content...
Once war was declared, the United States set its sights on the nearest British colony, Canada, with
hefty optimism of victory. The Canadians were well prepared and the Americans were not, and
the American defeat was humiliating. The American attackers were forced to retrograde back
south and eventually were overtaken by the Canadians at Detroit without a single shot being fired.
In the Battle of Thames, Detroit was successfully retaken and Tecumseh was killed. At first the
Americans were winning the battles against Britain at sea, but in April 1814, Napoleon was
defeated and Great Britain was able to turn her full attention on the United States. On the 24th of
August 1814, British forces were able to raid the Chesapeake Bay and capture Washington, D.C.
British troops then moved to take Baltimore and failed. The British Navy bombarded Baltimore
with canon fire for over 24 hours but it was to no prevail. By this time Britain had already begun
talks of an armistice with the United States at Ghent. The Treaty of Ghent was signed on the 24th of
December 1814, and included no territorial border changes and no Indian

The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and England. Ending in 1815 with the
Treaty of Ghent, the war did not accomplish any of the issues it was being fought over. For the US,
the War of 1812 seemed to just be one failure after another. Although the military suffered great
failure during the war, these were the direct consequence of the failure of the citizens to unite for
the causes of the war. Because of these failures, it is quite valid to call the War of 1812
"America's worst–fought war".
When the war began, it was being fought by the Americans to address their grievances toward the
British. This seemed like a justifiable cause for a war, however not all of the citizens shared the

The Southern States were somewhat along the same line as the New England States as Britain bought
most of their cotton and tobacco, and a war with Britain would definitely cut off the trade and leave
many southern planters with extensive idle inventories of product. The Federalists also had one
great apprehension towards the war. At this time, the Federalists were a dying party, partly because
of their loss of power in the government, and because of their failing leadership and organization
within the party. They feared that citizens of British Canada would infiltrate into the United States.
The Federalists feared these Canadian "Commoners" because they would support the
Jeffersonian Republicans if they did come into the United States, not the federalists. The Canadians
were common workers, not aristocrats like dying breed who were trying in vain to keep the
Federalists as an assertive party in American Politics. Because of these apprehensions toward the
war, the citizens were not able to unite and join together to support the war that was going on around
them.
Even though the extremely weak military contributed toward the title of "America's
worst–fought war", it was not the direct source of this title. However, the military did suffer
very bad defeats for several reasons. One of the main reasons was that the military was extremely
unprepared to go into war. During

The War of 1812
In this essay I will be discussing the major events and battles that took place during the War of
1812. It started in 1812 and lasted until the spring of 1815. There were three main causes for the
war taking place, America trading with parts of Europe(France), the Impressment, and the possible
desire on the part of the United States to annex Canada, The War of 1812 ended as a stalemate in
the spring of 1815. The War of 1812 was a war that never should have been fought.
America Trading With France
The British didn't want America trading especially with France because of a war involving France
and Britain that was going on at the time. According to ManyThings.org...show more content...
America hated this because the British were literally taking american people and making them fight
for someone else.
Why did America want to annex Canada
America wanted to annex Canada because it had a lot of resources that America would have loved
to get there hands on the great amount of resources that America could have used. America also
wanted to annex canada because it would have been a huge amount of territory gain for america and
it would have made America a super country, it would have been a metaphorical spit in the face to
Great Britain.
How did the war end?
The war of 1812 ended as a stalemate in 1814 when the downfall of Napoleon allowed the British to
distribute more military resources to the war, Washington D.C., fell to the British in August. While
In Washington, British troops burned the White House down, and other buildings in retaliation for
the earlier burning of government buildings in Canada by the US soldiers. The British soon
retreated, and Fort McHenry in Baltimore harbor withstood a massive British continuous attack and

"A Free Trade and Sailors Rights," a quote that became a political slogan and a rallying cry during
the War of 1812. For America, the War of 1812 was justified. Great Britain attempted to restrict U.S.
trade by seizing American men and "impressing" them, Britain started inciting Indian attacks on the
frontier and provided arms and support to Native Americans who attacked settlers, and American
"warhawks" desire to go to war with Britain and to take Canada from Britain. Therefore there was
no other choice but war. Great Britain and France was locked in a long and bitter conflict. The U.S.

countries. Britain and France in an attempt to cut off supplies from reaching the enemy, both sides

waters and forcing them to fight for the British instead. The British justified "impressment" with the
idea that American soldiers, once subjects of the King, were always subjects of the King. Between
1793 and 1812, the British impressed more than 15,000 sailors, by 1812 the U.S. had enough and
declared war on Britain.
For Native Americans, the War of 1812 was a struggle for freedom and independence. Before the
War of 1812, the U.S. were planning to expand onto Native American territories. Most Indian tribes
saw their lands at risk, so they sided with the British, and were against the United States. Thus
Britain started encouraging Indians to attacks on the frontier. They provided arms and support to
Native Americans who attacked settlers. Native Americans led by Tecumseh, defended Canada.
After being abandoned by the British, they fought the Americans who were led by William Harrison

In Battles such as Thames and Baltimore, the United States conquered the British and Canadian
troops. In the Battles of Chippewa and Horseshoe Bend, the American militia defeated the Swanee
and Creek Natives respectively. They were against the Natives because of their alliance with the
British forces. The death of Tecumseh was seen as a great achievement to them because it led to
the end of battles versus the natives. The Americans, for the most part, were victorious on the water
as well. The USS Constitution defeated the British vessel Guerriere on 19 August 1812 and the Java
in December of that year. They also took over British ships and Canadian territory in the Battle of
Lake Erie and the Battle of Plattsburgh.
Another reason that Canada is said to have lost this war is that the war hit Upper Canada the
hardest. The Niagara Peninsula was taken by the Americans and they idealized that it could be used
as a sort of base for them. Instead, guerilla warfare ensued, which to this day Americans are
reluctant to mention. York was burned by Americans. It is believed that Upper Canada only
survived the war because of the tremendous support from the British forces. This may be true, but
without the British, the Canadians would not have been in the war to begin with. Upper Canada was
also changed dramatically in terms of economics. Farms became

The War of 1812 The War of 1812 is the military conflict between the United States and Great Britain,
which occurred from 1812 to 18141. During the 19th century the United States rebelled against the
British rule because the British Empire restricted the American trade. The restriction primarily came
about since the British thought that it would disadvantageously affect their war with France. Aside
from this the British Empire would like to establish an Indian State located in the Midwest so that
they can retain influence over the region2, propelling the United States to engage in a war for
independence. The war transpired mainly because of the trade restrictions implemented by the
British on American ships. During the war between France and Great Britain, Napoleon ordered a

The American ships were more victorious on the sea wars while the British forces invaded land
territories with ease due to the assistance of the Great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh17. The equation of
the material losses was really quite minimal for both countries.

process to establish domination on the part of the British and to establish independence from the
Colony for the Americans.
Although the War of 1812 is considered a minor struggle between the United States and Great
Britain it was considered a major crossroads for Canada and the Native Americans (Indians) to
have their own respective independence from any foreign rule. The United States view the War of

Causes of the War of 1812 The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain
from June 1812 to the spring of 1815 (Findling, 15). When the war began, it was being fought by the
Americans to address their grievances toward the British, though toward the end, the issues
eventually were unjustified and reasons manipulated. There is no single cause for the War of 1812
but instead, several related causes, such the influence of the War Hawks, the impressments as well as
the Embargo and Non–Intercourse acts, and the British's possible interference with the Indian
Nations, and land ownership disputes between the Natives and Americans, ultimately leading to the
Battle of Tippecanoe. The War Hawks were a group of 20...show more content...
The Hawks were confident that Britain would yield to US demands if it saw America considering
military battle. Any way, Britain was already involved with the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, thus
being short on money and men. Ultimately, the War Hawks convinced majority of congress to vote
in favor of this "Second Struggle for Liberty". Though a few rebellious congressmen fought over
little details, everyone agreed that it wasn't realistic to expect a peaceful and diplomatic conclusion
to the constant divergence with Britain. In the early 19th century, Britain and France were engaged
in a life–or–death struggle. After much war through the years, France dominated a lot of Europe,
though Britain was the ruler of the seas. When it became obvious that neither side was likely to win
a decisive military contest, the warring nations turned to commercial warfare: Britain tried to
blockade all of Europe, and France attempted to prevent the sale of British goods in their
possession(http://gatewayno.com/history/War1812.html, War of 1812). During the 1790s, French
and British maritime policies produced several crises with the United States, but after 1803 the
difficulties became much more serious. In November of 1807, Britain issued a trade regulation
called an Order in Council, which compelled all neutral ships to either call at British ports or be
subject to a search by British authorities. A month later, Napoleon decreed

The War Of 1812 The War of 1812 took place while president James Madison was in office.
Madison was born in Orange County, Virginia in 1751. He attended the College of New Jersey,
which is now well known as Princeton. Madison did many significant things both before and after he
was in office. He participated in the framing of the Virginia Constitution, served in the Continental
Congress and he was also a leader in the Virginia Assembly. One of his major contributions was a
ratification to the Constitution. He wrote the Federalist essays along with Alexander Hamilton and
John Jay. In writing that, many people then began referring to him as the "Father of the

Madison's War."# Their reasoning for not wanting it was that they believed a war against the
world's major naval power would do very little to help restore their shipping. In the beginnings of
the war, America was not too successful. The choices of the troops and the generals were not too
smart, most of them being militia and volunteers. Also, a general by the name of William Hull, who
was a Revolutionary War veteran, had plans to invade Canada through Detroit. Instead of him doing
just that, he decided to surrender his army and Detroit to a much smaller British and Native
American army. General Hull was then court–marshaled and convicted. Luckily, president Madison
saved his life, saying that he did not deserve death because of his previous services to the country.
There were many other attempts to invade Canada but none of them were successful. Once the war
had gotten its start, America began making victories. At one point, America's confidence level was
through the roof because of a few naval victories that had been made. There were three American
ships which were the Constitution, the United States, and the President. Those three ships were
faster, bigger and better armed than their British counterparts. Now the British had quite a few more
ships in counting than America did, but their ships were vulnerable in a one–on–one fight with an

What Caused The War Of 1812 Essay
The War of 1812 On the 18th of June, 1812, President Madison declared war. There were several
factors that caused the war of 1812. One of the biggest factors was the British instituting trade
restrictions between the United States and France. The British didn't want their enemy, France, to
trade with the United States. Americans were also wanting to expand their territory. That territory
being Canada. Another factor was the British army seized American ships and confiscated U.S.
seaman and forced them to serve with the British Army. They justified these actions by saying that
the seamen they "impressed" were deserters of their army. The U.S. also resented that Great Brittan
was encouraging Indians to have hostility against the U.S....show more content...
They assumed that they could casually march into Canada and take control with no fight. The
Americans invaded Canada 2 separate times but were unsuccessful each time. After years of fighting
both the United States and Brittan were ready to end the war and negotiate peace. The Treaty of
Ghent was established and signed on the eve of Christmas 1814. This treaty ended the conflict but
there were still many unresolved issues. Two major events occurred before the announcement of the
treaty was made, but the events were significant. Since the war of 1812, trading with Brittan and
France had been cut off. America had to become independent with manufacturing their own goods.
This helped grow the United States Industry. The Tariff Act of 1816 that helped grow American
Industry, which increased the prices of British goods. Congress passed this act, although with some
thought it controversial, to encourage Americans to buy American goods. The Tariff Act will also
help pay off the expense of war. After the war, America had a strong feeling of patriotism. This also
helped grow the American industry because Americans wanted to purchase American goods and not
British goods, due to their distrust for the British post

The Winner Of The War Of 1812 Essay

The Winner of the War of 1812 There are many conflicting viewpoints of the war of 1812. Both
sides claim it as a victory but only one side can win a war. The war of 1812 isn't a very well
known war throughout the world but it has been a very important one to the countries and people
involved. The war was an issue of the U.S. wanting land and seeing an opportunity to have North
American Britain while Britain was at war with Napoleon. The U.S. also wanted to trade with
everybody as Great Britain was stopping the U.S. from trading with enemies in Europe such as
Napoleon. The United States and Great Britain both views The War of 1812 as a victory but in reality
the United States did not achieve their goals of the war and Great Britain obtained almost all of
their goals with less losses. The two views of the War of 1812 conflict with each other in many
ways. The British has one view on this war. They have the belief that they stopped the Americans
from trading with France during the Napoleonic wars. They set up a blockade with only about fifteen
percent of their navy. Donald R. Hickey said
"The blockade devastated the American economy. Between 1811 and 1814, the value of exports
and imports fell from $114 million to $20 million, while custom rates used to finance the war were
more than halved from $13 million to $6 million. Many American merchant vessels did not risk
leaving port."

Essay on The Effects Of The War Of 1812
The War of 1812 has always been a part of American history not very exiting to learn about for
most Americans. It was a tumultuous time for the New Republic and some of the battles of the war
shamed the new nation. The War of 1812 did not have the same glorious, honorable, and just cause
of the American Revolution. The British made fools of the American people and even burned the
Capitol and the White House, the centers of American politics, to the ground. However as shameful
as the war was, it also had some good benefits and it demonstrated to Great Britain and the rest of the
world that the United States of America was its own sovereign nation, and not some British Sphere of
Influence. Although the treaty of Ghent failed to address...show more content...
The final battles of the war and the end of impressment led the American people to believe that
they had truly won the war. This led to a new pride in their nation. They know felt more like one
people, and the basic American ideals and principles further developed during the "Era of Good
Feelings." Another benefit of the War of 1812 was the growth of American industry. The Embargo
Act before the war and the blockade during the war had halted American trade. Because of the halt
in trade New England merchants and investors started to become entrepreneurs. Many factories and
companies were started during and after the war. The textile industry led the way with its large
mills. Also during the war there was a greater demand for goods and equipment to be used by the
army. This caused an increase in business in some factories and as a result more job openings. This
industrialization reduced American dependence from the rest of the world. This meant that other
countries could not fully control the prices they charged for their manufactured goods, therefore
strengthening America's power. The creation of factories also caused the government and private
investors to make internal improvements such as roads and canals for the easier transportation of
goods from the factories to the markets. The War of 1812 helped America industrialize making it
less helpless and more economically

The War of 1812
"In view of the wants and needs of an infant United States (1783–1812), the War of 1812 was
extremely successful in its results." The War of 1812 is significant to United States history in a
number of ways. The War, and our not losing it, reaffirmed American Independence. Second, the war
showed the Americans that a stronger military was needed.
It strengthened our isolation by giving us courage. The war also served to improve our economy as
it stimulated manufacturing. Finally, the War of 1812 resulted in the death of the Federalist Party. All
these results helped the wants and needs of our newly won independence. Our young country was
gaining respect and slowly acquiring the necessities to survive.

However, the war did strengthen our isolation. The United States realized that they should no longer
focus on the big boys in Europe but focus on the little guys in our own hemisphere. This led to the
Monroe Doctrine and our breaking away from Great Britain.
Before and during the war our trade was severely interrupted and negatively affected which
resulted in the need for Americans to rely on themselves to make many of the products they had
previously depended on importation for. Because the States were no longer purchasing from other
countries and paying high taxes, but buying and selling to their own people, the economy was
lifted. Previous to the start of the War and all throughout, the economy was in sad shape. Due to the
result of the war and uneasy ties with Britain, by doing business within itself America was lifted a
little out of the huge hole which the War of 1812 and previous wars created.
During the war, the Federalist Party had been vocally opposed to the war and had even gone so far
as to hold a The Hartford Convention, during which they criticized the war, the government, and
even threatened to secede from the Union. At the same time this convention was going on, the peace
treaty was being negotiated so that the Federalist party was criticized and this helped lead to the
party's demise.
Although the United States lost money, men and some sense of worth, they gained several much

War of 1812 Essay
The War of 1812 was battled between the Assembled States and Britain. Finishing in 1815 with the
Settlement of Ghent, the war did not achieve any of the issues it was being battled about. For the
US, the War of 1812 appeared to simply be one disappointment after another. Despite the fact that the
military endured awesome disappointment amid the war, these were the immediate result of the
disappointment of the nationals to join for the reasons for the war. In light of these disappointments,
it is very substantial to call the War of 1812 "America 's most exceedingly awful battled war".
At the point when the war started, it was being battled by the Americans to address their
grievances toward the English. This appeared like a reasonable reason for a war, however not the
greater part of the subjects had a similar feeling of solidarity about the political issues the war was
being battled about. The US was entirely vexed about the proceeding with impressment of American
mariners into the English Naval force and the seizures of American dealer exchanging vessels by the
English. Another reason the Assembled States wished to go to war with England was a direct result
of their dealings with the Indians in the West. The English were exchanging with the Indians, as well
as giving them weapons and urging them to assault American settlements. Alongside these reasons,
the Americans, now getting to be eager for land, longed for catching English Canada and conceivably

On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on England. The war lasted 2 years and 8

Before 1805, it was a chaos in Europe. Britain was at war with France. For years, the wars had seen

and France was kicked out of North America. Also British threatened France to establish any colony
outside Europe. Britain had the...show more content...
So, as a result, the British began seizing American merchants who were trading with the West Indies
and took the ships and their cargoes as a prize and enforcing impressment on their crews. This was
just the impressment from merchant ships. They also impressed deserters from the Navy. The
Chesapeake–Leopard Affair was an example happened at the coast of Virginia in 1807. Four sailors
were removed from the American vessel and were tried for desertion, one of them was subsequently
hanged. The actual number of Americans who were impressed into service in theRoyal Navy is
numerous, but unknown. However, it is estimated that a thousand American sailor or merchants per
year were illegally pressed into British service. They need these sailors. Horsman pointed out that
after the war against Napoleon, Britain was in shortage of sailors and it led to the impressment for
them to increase their own seamen. This issue gained national attention, bringing the United States
to the brink of war. The war between France and Britain raged in the Caribbean so the United States
could not just stand and watch. Thomas Jefferson proposed Embargo Act and the Congress passed it
in December 1807. It prohibited trade with a foreign country or countries usually for exerting
economic pressure. However, he had seriously miscalculated. France

What Caused The War Of 1812
The years Thomas Jefferson and James Madison took office were in many ways difficult for the
United States. Several events which compounded upon each other lead to the American–British War
of 1812 which ended officially in 1814 with the peace Treaty of Ghent. None of the issues which
instigated war were really resolved and it would seem that for the US, the War of 1812 was just a
series of failures and few triumphs that, in the end, cost the Natives more than anyone else.
The war began with fired–up Americans seeking resolution to their deep–seated resentments toward
the British; hard feelings which only festered during the French Revolutionary Wars. Since the
American Revolution, the Untied States had long been provoked by the...show more content...
In fact, during the European embargoes, thousands of American sailors were forcibly impressed by
the British because Royal Navy life was so awful and unrewarding it caused British men to desert
their own country en masse for the better–paying, better quality life of American maritime. In
response to the Chesapeake affair, Jefferson, U.S. president at the time, made the Embargo Act
which prevented Americans from trading with any ports outside the United States. The act really hurt
American economics and trade and created such uproar in people that it was soon replaced with a
more sensible act. The Non–Intercourse act forbade American trade with Britain, France and their
colonial allies until their own embargoes were dissolved.
While impressments and embargoes were in flux, a growing number of Republicans grew deeply
upset over the neutrality of Jefferson and Madison. The War Hawks, as they were called, were utterly
infuriated that the British were apparently allowed to continue to violate American maritime. James
Madison, president at this time, announced that unless Great Britain revoked its embargoes, the U.S.
would have an embargo against them beginning in 1811. England did uplift its European blockade
on June 16, 1812. Unfortunately, news in general travelled much too slowly in this time period. So,
the raging demands for war from the

Essay about The War of 1812
The War of 1812
On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain. The peace treaty to end the
war was signed in Europe, 1814. The war lasted from 1812 to the spring of 1815 because there was
a delay in communications. It was fought along the Canadian border, along with several sea battles.
By the time the war was over the United States lost 2,260 soldiers, and the British 1,600 soldiers. The
war of 1812 was a very significant event that took place in the U.S. It did in fact confirm America's
independence. That is why it is often referred to as "the second war of independence or "the second
revolutionary war.
"The United States had been upset with British for several reasons. British failed to withdraw from

The British maritime policy was influenced by it's jealousy of America's commercial growth. Even
though both France and Britain violated the United States neutral rights on the seas, the United
States resented Britain maritime policies more because they dominated the seas. The U.S. tried to
peacefully change the policies of the European powers. There would not be a British maritime
policy if it had not been for the war with France. The policy was intended to destroy Frances
economy.
During the Napoleonic Wars the Royal Navy expanded to 175 ships of the line and 600 ships
overall, requiring 140,000 sailors. The Royal Navy turned to impressments when it didn't have
enough able bodies to man the ships. The Royal Navy went after Royal Navy Veterans or deserters
who had left and became sailors in the United States merchant navy by intercepting and searching
U.S merchant ships. Britain also considered any U.S. citizen born in British liable for impressments.
The inability to distinguish Americans from non–Americans due to a wide spread of use of false
identity led to frequent impressments of Americans that had never been British. This became a
major grievance.
The United States attempted to change the European policies by the Embargo Act of 1807, after the
Chesapeake affair of 1807. The Embargo Act banned all American ships from foreign trade.

War Of 1812 Essay

  • 1. War of 1812 Essay The War of 1812      The United States of America began to see the effects of Anglo–French War by the early 1800's. This European quarrel began affecting the United States shipping industry. Britain and France were violating neutral shipping rights of American merchants. They thought of America as weak due to inadequate time the nation had to develop. These violations were the first and primary provoking factors that led to war with Britain. There was reason that Britain became the target of US military rather that France. Britain has influenced Indians around Lake Michigan to resist white settlement. This was one of the primary reasons the English were chosen as our foe. Britain had the Indians do this as an...show more content... Lietinant–Colonol John Harvey chose 700 soldiers 8th and 49th regiments. These men arrived at the American camp at 2:00 am June 6, 1813, incidentally King George III's birthday. The English forces set there bayonets forward and ran upon the camp while whooping like Indians. Much to their surprise there were mysteriously only some smoldering campfires and some cooks around them. The British realized what had happened: the order had been made for the American troops to sleep at higher ground for the night with their arms by their sides. American troops spotted the British while running down upon the camp and had very little time to attempt to scramble into place. Their time wasn't a lot, but it was much more than the British had. The surprise element was not only lost, but had backfired on the British. The 49th regiment split left under the command of Major James Ogilivie; the 8th regiment had split right. Neither regiment had adequate time to form a line there before the barrage of fire descending upon them. At this crucial moment, Major Plenderleath, with about 20 men of the 49th, darted up the hill towards four of the American guns that were mounted on Smith's knoll (where the lion monument stands now). They had managed to shoot two rounds of this artillery before being seized by the British, but the artillery was to play a vital part in the victory of the battle. Consequently, American troops suffered much more of a loss than they would have if they had prevented the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. War of 1812 Essay The War of 1812 was a war between Britain and the United States fought primarily in Upper Canada. It had many causes, few which involved British North America. The results of the war include the fact that there was no clear winner or loser among them. The only real losers in the situation were the Natives in the region. They were driven out of their lands and customs. None of the borders was changed by the war, though many attempts were made. The Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war, did nothing to advance the state of the countries. It went so far as to end the war and put things back the way that they were, but the main causes of the conflict were not addressed or dealt with. In order to evaluate the...show more content... He was valiant in protecting his people and led them courageously in battle; even though he did not have to engage in the fighting himself, he joined his troops. He was killed in the Battle of Moravian town on 5 October 1813. After his death, survivors retreated and later signed a cease–fire with the Americans. Another highly regarded individual as a result is Laura Secord. When she overheard American soldiers, she rushed to tell someone in charge of the British force. On the way, she came across Natives who blocked the oncoming troops. Because of her dangerous trek, the Americans were turned away at Beaver Dam. With the American offences being stopped, and heroic men coming forth, Canadian nationalism was on the rise. Since most of the war had been fought in Upper Canada, retaining of the vast majority was as much a moral victory as a material one. The end of the war brought significant immigration from the United States into Upper and Lower Canada. Canadians resented this because they still regarded Americans as the enemy. Being banded together in theWar of 1812 forced the people of the Canadas to feel as though they were a unified nation. The English–speaking Canadians could better understand the French–speaking Canadians and vice Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. War of 1812 Essay War of 1812 Although the American's had been "independent" from the British since the end of the Revolutionary War, the British continued to harass and mettle in American affairs. While Madison was seeking reelection the War Hawks in Congress had declared war on Britain in June 18. On paper the rag–tag American was seen as incapable of defeating the superior British forces for a second time. However this war would have an unexpected results as neither side would be the "victory". Even the United States wasn't able to gain any new territory to their growing collection and the borders were returned to the way they had been (status quo antebellum), Americans were able to declare victory in the War of 1812 because they were able to enter a...show more content... In 1807 Thomas Jefferson would declare for the halt of American trade with Europe with the Embargo Act. However this would hurt Americans because they had cut off their only source of trade and thus the Embargo Act was replaced with the Non–Intercourse Act of 1809. This act stated that the US will trade with everyone but the French and the British, but that they would resume trade with them as soon as these two stop violating American rights. The stubborn powers won't budge leading to Macon's Bill #2. This said the US would trade with everyone but would stop trade with one of the two powers if one of them stop violating American's rights. Britain would act on this quickly to snubbed French trade. However by the war's end the American had began to rely on American made good rather than on good manufacture in Europe and thus they gain a sense of economic independence. The American were always able to declare a sense of victory by being able to hold its own against the huge global power Britain. The US was able to gain a great sense of pride by being able to hold their own against a powerful British force. Although the Americans were able to defeat to defeat the British in the Revolutionary War to gain their independence they were still seen as a weakling in Britain's eyes. Because the British viewed affairs in America as insignificant they would not send their premier forces to fight against the rag–tag Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. War Of 1812 Research Paper In 1812, The U.S. declared war on Great Britain. However, was this war really a necessary war? I believe this war was not necessary for three reasons. The first reason the war was not necessary was because the British did not want war with the U.S.. The British were already in a war with France and this wasn't a fair war for them. The second reason the war of 1812 wasn't justifiable was because the British were even willing to stop interfering with American Wars so the war wouldnt start. They sent a message to America saying they would stop interfering with American shipping, but sadly it arrived after the declaration of war. One of the reasons America declared war was because of the BRitish impressment of American ships and sailors. The third Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Most Native Americans sided with the British, believing that if the British won the war, that Americans would stop expanding west and encroaching on Native American land. Two brothers, Tecumseh and Tenskatawa, also known as the Prophet, fought for the British and lead Native Americans into battle. The majority of the world viewed this war, not as a separate war, but as continuing conflict of the Napoleonic Wars. The United States viewed the War of 1812 as a second war with the British and a repeated fight for independence. The fronts, on which the war was raged, included battles at...show more content... Once war was declared, the United States set its sights on the nearest British colony, Canada, with hefty optimism of victory. The Canadians were well prepared and the Americans were not, and the American defeat was humiliating. The American attackers were forced to retrograde back south and eventually were overtaken by the Canadians at Detroit without a single shot being fired. In the Battle of Thames, Detroit was successfully retaken and Tecumseh was killed. At first the Americans were winning the battles against Britain at sea, but in April 1814, Napoleon was defeated and Great Britain was able to turn her full attention on the United States. On the 24th of August 1814, British forces were able to raid the Chesapeake Bay and capture Washington, D.C. British troops then moved to take Baltimore and failed. The British Navy bombarded Baltimore with canon fire for over 24 hours but it was to no prevail. By this time Britain had already begun talks of an armistice with the United States at Ghent. Ending in 1815 with the Treaty of Ghent, the war did not accomplish any of the issues it was being fought over. For the US, the War of 1812 seemed to just be one failure after another. Although the military suffered great failure during the war, these were the direct consequence of the failure of the citizens to unite for the causes of the war. Because of these failures, it is quite valid to call the War of 1812 "America's worst–fought war". When the war began, it was being fought by the Americans to address their grievances toward the British. This seemed like a justifiable cause for a war, however not all of the citizens shared the same sense of unity about...show more content... The Southern States were somewhat along the same line as the New England States as Britain bought most of their cotton and tobacco, and a war with Britain would definitely cut off the trade and leave many southern planters with extensive idle inventories of product. The Federalists also had one great apprehension towards the war. At this time, the Federalists were a dying party, partly because of their loss of power in the government, and because of their failing leadership and organization within the party. They feared that citizens of British Canada would infiltrate into the United States. The Federalists feared these Canadian "Commoners" because they would support the Jeffersonian Republicans if they did come into the United States, not the federalists. The Canadians were common workers, not aristocrats like dying breed who were trying in vain to keep the Federalists as an assertive party in American Politics. Because of these apprehensions toward the war, the citizens were not able to unite and join together to support the war that was going on around them. Even though the extremely weak military contributed toward the title of "America's worst–fought war", it was not the direct source of this title. However, the military did suffer very bad defeats for several reasons. One of the main reasons was that the military was extremely unprepared to go into war. For Native Americans, the War of 1812 was a struggle for freedom and independence. Before the War of 1812, the U.S. were planning to expand onto Native American territories. Most Indian tribes saw their lands at risk, so they sided with the British, and were against the United States. Thus Britain started encouraging Indians to attacks on the frontier. They were against the Natives because of their alliance with the British forces. The death of Tecumseh was seen as a great achievement to them because it led to the end of battles versus the natives. The Americans, for the most part, were victorious on the water as well. The USS Constitution defeated the British vessel Guerriere on 19 August 1812 and the Java in December of that year. They also took over British ships and Canadian territory in the Battle of Lake Erie and the Battle of Plattsburgh. Another reason that Canada is said to have lost this war is that the war hit Upper Canada the hardest. The Niagara Peninsula was taken by the Americans and they idealized that it could be used as a sort of base for them. Instead, guerilla warfare ensued, which to this day Americans are reluctant to mention. York was burned by Americans. It is believed that Upper Canada only survived the war because of the tremendous support from the British forces. This may be true, but without the British, the Canadians would not have been in the war to begin with. Upper Canada was also changed dramatically in terms of economics. During the 19th century the United States rebelled against the British rule because the British Empire restricted the American trade. The restriction primarily came about since the British thought that it would disadvantageously affect their war with France. Aside from this the British Empire would like to establish an Indian State located in the Midwest so that they can retain influence over the region2, propelling the United States to engage in a war for independence. Though a few rebellious congressmen fought over little details, everyone agreed that it wasn't realistic to expect a peaceful and diplomatic conclusion to the constant divergence with Britain. In the early 19th century, Britain and France were engaged in a life–or–death struggle. After much war through the years, France dominated a lot of Europe, though Britain was the ruler of the seas. When it became obvious that neither side was likely to win a decisive military contest, the warring nations turned to commercial warfare: Britain tried to blockade all of Europe, and France attempted to prevent the sale of British goods in their possession(http://gatewayno.com/history/War1812.html, War of 1812). In the beginnings of the war, America was not too successful. The choices of the troops and the generals were not too smart, most of them being militia and volunteers. Also, a general by the name of William Hull, who was a Revolutionary War veteran, had plans to invade Canada through Detroit. Instead of him doing just that, he decided to surrender his army and Detroit to a much smaller British and Native American army. General Hull was then court–marshaled and convicted. Luckily, president Madison saved his life, saying that he did not deserve death because of his previous services to the country. There were many other attempts to invade Canada but none of them were successful. Once the war had gotten its start, America began making victories. At one point, America's confidence level was through the roof because of a few naval victories that had been made. There were three American ships which were the Constitution, the United States, and the President. Those three ships were faster, bigger and better armed than their British counterparts. One of the biggest factors was the British instituting trade restrictions between the United States and France. The British didn't want their enemy, France, to trade with the United States. Americans were also wanting to expand their territory. That territory being Canada. Another factor was the British army seized American ships and confiscated U.S. seaman and forced them to serve with the British Army. This treaty ended the conflict but there were still many unresolved issues. Two major events occurred before the announcement of the treaty was made, but the events were significant. Since the war of 1812, trading with Brittan and France had been cut off. America had to become independent with manufacturing their own goods. This helped grow the United States Industry. The Tariff Act of 1816 that helped grow American Industry, which increased the prices of British goods. Congress passed this act, although with some thought it controversial, to encourage Americans to buy American goods. The Tariff Act will also help pay off the expense of war. Both sides claim it as a victory but only one side can win a war. The war of 1812 isn't a very well known war throughout the world but it has been a very important one to the countries and people involved. The war was an issue of the U.S. wanting land and seeing an opportunity to have North American Britain while Britain was at war with Napoleon. The U.S. also wanted to trade with everybody as Great Britain was stopping the U.S. from trading with enemies in Europe such as Napoleon. The United States and Great Britain both views The War of 1812 as a victory but in reality the United States did not achieve their goals of the war and Great Britain obtained almost all of their goals with less losses. The two views of the War of 1812 conflict with each other in many ways. The British has one view on this war. They have the belief that they stopped the Americans from trading with France during the Napoleonic wars. They set up a blockade with only about fifteen percent of their navy. Donald R. Hickey said "The blockade devastated the American economy. Between 1811 and 1814, the value of exports and imports fell from $114 million to $20 million, while custom rates used to finance the war were more than halved from $13 million to $6 million. This led to a new pride in their nation. They know felt more like one people, and the basic American ideals and principles further developed during the "Era of Good Feelings." Another benefit of the War of 1812 was the growth of American industry. The Embargo Act before the war and the blockade during the war had halted American trade. Because of the halt in trade New England merchants and investors started to become entrepreneurs. Many factories and companies were started during and after the war. The textile industry led the way with its large mills. Also during the war there was a greater demand for goods and equipment to be used by the army. This caused an increase in business in some factories and as a result more job openings. This industrialization reduced American dependence from the rest of the world. This meant that other countries could not fully control the prices they charged for their manufactured goods, therefore strengthening America's power. The creation of factories also caused the government and private investors to make internal improvements such as roads and canals for the easier transportation of goods from the factories to the markets. Because the States were no longer purchasing from other countries and paying high taxes, but buying and selling to their own people, the economy was lifted. Previous to the start of the War and all throughout, the economy was in sad shape. Due to the result of the war and uneasy ties with Britain, by doing business within itself America was lifted a little out of the huge hole which the War of 1812 and previous wars created. Finishing in 1815 with the Settlement of Ghent, the war did not achieve any of the issues it was being battled about. For the US, the War of 1812 appeared to simply be one disappointment after another. Despite the fact that the military endured awesome disappointment amid the war, these were the immediate result of the disappointment of the nationals to join for the reasons for the war. In light of these disappointments, it is very substantial to call the War of 1812 "America 's most exceedingly awful battled war". At the point when the war started, it was being battled by the Americans to address their grievances toward the English. This appeared like a reasonable reason for a war, however not the greater part of the subjects had a similar feeling of solidarity about the political issues the war was being battled about. The US was entirely vexed about the proceeding with impressment of American mariners into the English Naval force and the seizures of American dealer exchanging vessels by the English. Another reason the Assembled States wished to go to war with England was a direct result of their dealings with the Indians in the West. The English were exchanging with the Indians, as well as giving them weapons and urging them to assault American settlements. Four sailors were removed from the American vessel and were tried for desertion, one of them was subsequently hanged. The actual number of Americans who were impressed into service in theRoyal Navy is numerous, but unknown. The policy was intended to destroy Frances economy. During the Napoleonic Wars the Royal Navy expanded to 175 ships of the line and 600 ships overall, requiring 140,000 sailors.
