People all grow up in different places, around different people, under different circumstance and,
all of these cause different effects on their lives. People are who they are today because of the
experiences that they faced. Until I was a teenager, it was always just my mom and I. I never met
my "dad", not even from day one. I never was able to get to know him, or see him, but I did have a
mom. I faced the odds of becoming the stereotypical kid with a single parent that went down the
wrong path, but I never did. Life caused me to have a single mother that has made me the strong
person that I am today. Watching my mother live from pay check to pay check when I was young
was difficult. It was always hard for my mom to keep up with other parents but, she still somehow
managed to get me everything I wanted, and more. Even though I was too young to understand, I
could feel the stress, and the struggles my mom faced every day. She was only 20 years old when
I was born and, because of that she had no choice but to grow up fast. At such a young age, I saw
the effects of being a single parent, and the ways it changed my mom. She not only had to be a
young mother but, she had to find a way to replace the void of a father, or a father figure in my
life. My mom was strong, independent and courageous. Growing up watching her live her dreams

In our society nowadays, there is a growing problem in the structure of families. "Over the past
twenty years, single–parent families have become even more common than the so–called "nuclear
family" consisting of a mother, father, and children" (Single parenting and today's family").
According to the Pew Research Center, thirty–four percent of families in the United States reported
having only one parent in the household. It is a dire need to have two parents in the house to a
child's health, but there is a continuing growth of more and more families end up splitting up and
leaving children alone without a two–parent household. In the US alone it is predicted that between
40–50 percent of families divorce with at least one child in the house under 18 ("Marriage and

Although it is a momentous problem in the U.S, it is also a dilemma in other areas of the world.
This can lead young children to have different mentalities and cause many mental problems that not

One thing in my life that I had to dive into doing was being a single parent. I no longer had just
myself to worry about and to take care of; I was going to have another person to be responsible for. I
had a mixture of feelings when I found out I was pregnant. I did not know if his dad was going to be

After what seemed like an eternity they finally came, we hopped into the ambulance and sped off
to the ER. They stripped him down to nothing but his diaper and helped cool him off with a wet
washcloth until we arrived at the hospital. After waiting for what seemed like forever, the doctor
came to check him and diagnosed that the reason he had this seizure was because in just a short
time he went from being a normal kid to having a such a high temperature that his body reacted in

Everyone knows being a parent is hard but is being a single parent harder? When there are two
parents in the home, bills are typically paid by two incomes many couples sometimes take this for

Republic. I lived in a small apartment with my parents and my brother. I was raised with both
parents up to the age of 13 when they got divorced. My mother, brother and I moved to Florida
while my father stayed in New York City. When we got to Florida it was very difficult for mymother
to get a good paying job, because of the language barrier. She did not know how to speak English
very well. It was a difficult time for my mother, brother and I. In a year later, we moved to
Massachusetts and that when our life had changed. My mother got a decent job that helped pay for
the bills. My brother was finishing middle school and I was a freshman in high school. For being a
single parent, my mother had accomplished a lot with my brother and I.
As I was growing up I had dreams. My dreams were to finish high school, college, get married to a
