Summary Of The Roaring 20s
The Roaring 20s begin. Having moved from Okawville, a town of 600, to East St. Louis, a city of
75,000, Charles and Elizabeth have adjusted to a different environment over the past nine years.
Charles is 72–years–old and is still working as a crossing watchman for the L&N Railroad. He
cranks down the guardrails when a train approaches his intersection at 15th and Lincoln Streets.
Members of his family are undoubtedly noticing that he is becoming more and more forgetful of the
more recent things that have happened or that have been talked about. His 53–year–old wife,
Elizabeth, is still called "Mamma" by her adult children. Still living with his parents is their
29–year–old son, George or, as he is called by his family and friends, "Duddle." An army veteran,
he finds work, at least temporarily, as an electrician. Also living here is Lizzie. Turning 22, she is
the youngest of the Lorne children. She has fully recovered from having undergone major surgery
that has left her with only one kidney. L12) (L32) (L51)
Charles and Elizabeth's oldest child is Rachel Hall. In 1920, thirty–six–year–old Rachel is living
with her husband, Lorenzo, on 9th Street in East St. Louis. Her children, Grace, Irene, Charlie, and
Corrine, range in age from thirteen to nine. All are attending school. Although Lorenzo is employed
as a butcher at a meat packing house in National City, his salary is barely enough to cover the cost
rent, food, and clothing for a family of six. Despite going through the

Roaring 20's Change
The Roaring 20's a period in American history when everything was at a high. The First World War
had just ended and everyone had party mindset. The American social life was at an all time high
along the economy. Then everything changed as the roaring economy plummeted drastically,
lowering the quality of American life. With this drastic change in the quality of American life came
significant change in American literature. Surprisingly the great depression highly benefited
American literature. During the Roaring 20's American literature was dominated by the two
household names of Hemmingway, and Fitzgerald. However, once the great depression took place
names such as Mitchell, Steinbeck, and even Dr. Seuss came into the literature world. This

The Roaring Twenties Essay
The Roaring Twenties
Rarely has the world seen such a unique decade in time as the Roaring Twenties. It was an age of
prosperity and change. The United States experienced a recession that was followed by a period of
unlimited prosperity. Although the United States encountered both positive and negative
experiences, it proved to be very influential in the future. The 1920's were definitely "Roaring" in
more ways than one. There were major changes in American Society during the 1920's that took
place. Many new industries emerged during this decade that influenced society and the American
way of life. Even the federal government had different feelings about the business industry. The
characteristics of this decade made the 1920's...show more content...
The eighteenth amendment was adopted in 1919 and took effect in 1920. During Prohibition, rival
gangs in many gig cities tried to control the illegal sale of alcohol. Al ?Scarface? Capone and
George ?Bugs? Moran were known as the 20th Century Gangsters. In 1929, on Valentines Day, Al
Capone?s men dressed up in police uniforms and shot members of the Moran gang. Prohibition
during the Roaring Twenties was one of many changes that American Society encountered.
One of the major assessments that changed American Society was the Stock Market Crash of
1929. In the early 1920?s the stock market skyrocketed because of the average individual investor.
Prices on the New York stock began to surge ahead. Americans felt like they could make a lot of
money by investing it in banks. This led investors to pour all of their savings into common stocks.
Later in September, the market wavered and a drastic downward change took place in the stock
market. Banks were shut down and investors lost all of their savings literally overnight. The stock
market crash of 1929 was a drastic economic event that Americans still fear could happen again.
This also was a major change in American society and in the American way of life.
Many new industries emerged throughout the Roaring Twenties that are still playing a major role in
today?s society. The consumer product industry electrically powered products introduced during the
1920?s. Some of these products consisted of the

The Roaring 20s In The 1920s
The 1920s were prosperous times for Canada and many other countries around the world. Canadian
economy, thanks to its vast storage of natural resources, was striving to the extent that the 1920s was
nicknamed "The Roaring 20s". The 1920s era not only provided Canada with an amazing trade
relationship, but also led to the development of different movements & inventions that shook the
world and shaped the way we live today. These impacting events include artwork, social change,
women's rights, prohibition, the Model T car, the radio, silent film, medical advances and the
telephone. Though all these phenomena worked together to make the 20s "roar", but in particular
women's rights, medical advances and the telephone made the most prominent impact on the past
and present society.
God had created males and females to be equal, but this principle did not play out well back in the
1900s. Though women were given some respect due to their contributions in World War 1, they
still were controlled by their dominant male counterparts. By 1917, most provinces in Canada,
with the exception of Quebec and the maritime provinces, officially allowed women to vote and
by 1919, women were even given the right to be part of the parliament. Though women could
vote and take part in the parliament, only a few of them were elected to office. Ultimately, society
still viewed women to be inferior to men. They served as helpers in the work force and were rarely
allowed to make decisions. They occupied

The Roaring Twenties
The 1920's are commonly called the Roaring Twenties in the USA. The name suggest a time of
wild enjoyment, fun, loud, crazy and a musical age. The Twenties showed a revolution in art,
literature and music, which greatly reflected the nations changing values. The economy was
prosperous, there was a widespread of social reform, new aspects of culture were established, and
people found better ways to improve their lifestyle and enjoy life, such as the motor industry. The
motor industry boomed in the 1920s. Henry Ford's use of assembly lines to produce his Model T car
this meant prices fell. The car had cost $850 in 1908 but by 1925 Model T car cost only $290. By

Most of the house holds had their own radios. Those Americans who could not afford a radio
purchased it as an instalment. The program choice expanded therefore the majority of Americans
had purchased a radio.
New styles of behaviour had been introduced such as women who wore their hair long, had ankle
length dresses, and long cotton stockings. These women who dressed in such a way were called
Flappers. Flappers were women who wore short dresses and wore make up. Eventually, women
were even granted the right to vote. The women of the 1920's strived for a position of equality for
both men and women in society.
Americans were finding new ways to earn a better living through an overall period of booming
business and higher wages for workers. Many Americans began investing in the stock exchange in
the hope of having a prosperous return, while others chose to make their fortune in such illegal
activities as bootlegging. But there was a downside to the American dream as many blacks were
prosecuted. As well as some laws against the Blacks some whites set up an organisation called the
Ku Klux Klan which used violence to intimidate Black people. The Ku Klux Klan was a violent
organisation who not only stirred up racial hatred but also religious hatred. In the 1920s membership

Roaring 20's Analysis
I think overall this class has really brought to my attention the struggles and successes of the
United States. The realization that it wasn't always a smooth sailing ride, in which I feel the world
lacks the understanding of. Before taking this course, I was in a sense uneducated on my history of
the United States. I understood the varies of wars and tensions between the Soviet Union,
although, it was brought to my attention that, it's more than that. I absolutely loved the "Roaring
20's" and how much culture has changed over time. It was unique to see the Progressive Era come
to an end, while a new era created a marketplace that is prominent in the world today. You wonder
if the Roaring 20's never happened, would the world we live in be the same? What if...show more

It was nice to read the different perceptions and interpretations of my classmates. They all had
great responses that sometimes made me think differently about the topic we were discussing. It
made me realize that history is not just black and white. It's always up discussion and most
people won't agree all the time. Not every person feelings George Washington was the greatest
president to ever lead the United States. I wish we spent more time on the Roaring 20's because it
was so influential and the change that ultimately "Changed America". I disliked the topic about
the Gilded age because although this was a new growth in the world, it was filled with
corruption. It was upsetting to see how politics can dominant huge corporations and ruin people's
lives. It reminded me of the world today and how money can change the outcome of a society. If I
could improve this class, I would add more projects or interactive group projects. I enjoyed the
book reports, but felt that I was just reading to get a grade and not fully understanding the concept
behind it. I think there should be more feedback and overall summaries for each

Roaring 20's Research Paper
Of all the time periods I could choose from, I would choose to be born into the roaring 20's. The
roaring 20's were a post world war era associated with an economic boom in the United States, and
that subsequent wealth led to a time when society changed in such a way as to correlate with the
massive changes occurring in the US. Even though this wealth couldn't last forever, as shown
through the Great Depression which began in 1929, the country itself underwent advances that
forever changed the course of its history. Teen girls began to rebel against what was considered
proper society by following new, up and coming fashion trends that showed more skin than their
parents could handle, causing a domino effect of rebellious children and...show more content...
In 1920, after many long years of the suffragette movement, which included protests,
imprisonment, and even force feeding, women received the right to vote, the first of many times
women brought about change in order to better the lives of others. The 1920's are simply credited
as one of the most exciting decades in our history. At the beginning of this decade, women were
still wearing corsets, and toward the end, women had changed their fashion in a way that would
make their mothers shudder. I would like to be a part of this time not only for the glitz and
glamour it is often associated with, but simply to witness all the change that occurred in this
country during that short time. So many social shifts occurred that got the ball rolling on how
modern social society works. It is a decade that transformed the American way, which was
associated with hard work being necessary for survival and the only way to achieve what you set
your mind to. Considering the 1920's are a post world war era, America soon adopted an attitude of
living in the moment and risking it all, which contributed to the change of so many social mores. By
going back to this time I can witness not only the changing of society, but the changing of the whole
world as they knew

Roaring 20s
During the 1920s in America, our 'great' country was the land of golden opportunities. The 1920s
have a reputation for being a glamorous decade where people lived in prosperity and happiness. F.
Scott Fitzgerald's 'Great Gatsby' touches on this era and embodies the so–called "Roaring Twenties".
It got the name 'Roaring Twenties' because of its riotous fun, loud music and seemingly carefree
and wild enjoyment attitude towards everyone. I have written this essay to explore whether or
not if the 20s really 'roared' for everyone as it lead on, as well as which groups found the 1920s to
be a time of wealth and indulgence, and which groups found this to be a time of poverty and
intolerance.. In 1917, America joined the First World War on the side

Why The Roaring 20s?
This essay will review the following: assessing the argument on why the roaring 20s was a
reaction to the first world war, who/what is to blame for the great depression, who had a more
difficult experience: farmers or city people, how effective the responses of the Roosevelt
Administration to the great depression and how that changed the role of the federal government,
as well as why the general publics thought of the 1920s being a good time is inaccurate. In a way
the roaring 20s is a reaction to the first world war, during the roaring 20s the political systems had
been changing, during the war alcohol was needed for soldiers use but at the end of this war a
band had been set on alcohol use seeing as there was no real need for it anymore. Also new
technological uses started thanks to the first war. During world war one Germany had many new
secret weapons like airplanes used to see the battlefield from above and tanks which helped during
the trench warfare and gases and while the roaring 20s did not exactly use things like that it did
create new things like the model–t and model–a ford cars. Before the war the public had voted for
Wilson as president because of his promise to keep the people out of the war (isolationism) but
during the end we had entered anyways and once the war had ended the public decided they did not
want that to happen again so during the next election people had voted for Harding because he
promised to bring back normalcy and was not Wilson

Roaring 20S Essay

  • 1. Summary Of The Roaring 20s The Roaring 20s begin. Having moved from Okawville, a town of 600, to East St. Louis, a city of 75,000, Charles and Elizabeth have adjusted to a different environment over the past nine years. Charles is 72–years–old and is still working as a crossing watchman for the L&N Railroad. He cranks down the guardrails when a train approaches his intersection at 15th and Lincoln Streets. Members of his family are undoubtedly noticing that he is becoming more and more forgetful of the more recent things that have happened or that have been talked about. God had created males and females to be equal, but this principle did not play out well back in the 1900s. By 1917, most provinces in Canada, with the exception of Quebec and the maritime provinces, officially allowed women to vote and by 1919, women were even given the right to be part of the parliament. Though women could vote and take part in the parliament, only a few of them were elected to office. Ultimately, society still viewed women to be inferior to men. • 7. Roaring 20's Analysis I think overall this class has really brought to my attention the struggles and successes of the United States. The realization that it wasn't always a smooth sailing ride, in which I feel the world lacks the understanding of. Before taking this course, I was in a sense uneducated on my history of the United States. I understood the varies of wars and tensions between the Soviet Union, although, it was brought to my attention that, it's more than that. I absolutely loved the "Roaring 20's" and how much culture has changed over time. It was unique to see the Progressive Era come to an end, while a new era created a marketplace that is prominent in the world today. You wonder if the Roaring 20's never happened, would the world we live in be the same? What if...show more content... It was nice to read the different perceptions and interpretations of my classmates. They all had great responses that sometimes made me think differently about the topic we were discussing. It made me realize that history is not just black and white. It's always up discussion and most people won't agree all the time. Not every person feelings George Washington was the greatest president to ever lead the United States. I wish we spent more time on the Roaring 20's because it was so influential and the change that ultimately "Changed America". I disliked the topic about the Gilded age because although this was a new growth in the world, it was filled with corruption. It was upsetting to see how politics can dominant huge corporations and ruin people's lives. It reminded me of the world today and how money can change the outcome of a society. If I could improve this class, I would add more projects or interactive group projects. I enjoyed the book reports, but felt that I was just reading to get a grade and not fully understanding the concept behind it. I think there should be more feedback and overall summaries for each Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Roaring 20's Research Paper Of all the time periods I could choose from, I would choose to be born into the roaring 20's. The roaring 20's were a post world war era associated with an economic boom in the United States, and that subsequent wealth led to a time when society changed in such a way as to correlate with the massive changes occurring in the US. Even though this wealth couldn't last forever, as shown through the Great Depression which began in 1929, the country itself underwent advances that forever changed the course of its history. Teen girls began to rebel against what was considered proper society by following new, up and coming fashion trends that showed more skin than their parents could handle, causing a domino effect of rebellious children and...show more content... In 1920, after many long years of the suffragette movement, which included protests, imprisonment, and even force feeding, women received the right to vote, the first of many times women brought about change in order to better the lives of others. The 1920's are simply credited as one of the most exciting decades in our history. At the beginning of this decade, women were still wearing corsets, and toward the end, women had changed their fashion in a way that would make their mothers shudder. I would like to be a part of this time not only for the glitz and glamour it is often associated with, but simply to witness all the change that occurred in this country during that short time. So many social shifts occurred that got the ball rolling on how modern social society works. It is a decade that transformed the American way, which was associated with hard work being necessary for survival and the only way to achieve what you set your mind to. Considering the 1920's are a post world war era, America soon adopted an attitude of living in the moment and risking it all, which contributed to the change of so many social mores. By going back to this time I can witness not only the changing of society, but the changing of the whole world as they knew Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Roaring 20s During the 1920s in America, our 'great' country was the land of golden opportunities. The 1920s have a reputation for being a glamorous decade where people lived in prosperity and happiness. F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'Great Gatsby' touches on this era and embodies the so–called "Roaring Twenties". It got the name 'Roaring Twenties' because of its riotous fun, loud music and seemingly carefree and wild enjoyment attitude towards everyone. I have written this essay to explore whether or not if the 20s really 'roared' for everyone as it lead on, as well as which groups found the 1920s to be a time of wealth and indulgence, and which groups found this to be a time of poverty and intolerance.. • 10. Why The Roaring 20s? This essay will review the following: assessing the argument on why the roaring 20s was a reaction to the first world war, who/what is to blame for the great depression, who had a more difficult experience: farmers or city people, how effective the responses of the Roosevelt Administration to the great depression and how that changed the role of the federal government, as well as why the general publics thought of the 1920s being a good time is inaccurate. In a way the roaring 20s is a reaction to the first world war, during the roaring 20s the political systems had been changing, during the war alcohol was needed for soldiers use but at the end of this war a band had been set on alcohol use seeing as there was no real need for it anymore. Also new technological uses started thanks to the first war. During world war one Germany had many new secret weapons like airplanes used to see the battlefield from above and tanks which helped during the trench warfare and gases and while the roaring 20s did not exactly use things like that it did create new things like the model–t and model–a ford cars. Before the war the public had voted for Wilson as president because of his promise to keep the people out of the war (isolationism) but during the end we had entered anyways and once the war had ended the public decided they did not want that to happen again so during the next election people had voted for Harding because he promised to bring back normalcy and was not Wilson Get more content on HelpWriting.net
