better, with a strong sense of independence and freedom. In my essay I will be discussing the social
changes that took place during this particular era.

Living in the 1920's was very different to todays lifestyle as living expenses were much lower and
monthly incomes far less, with fewer people (that is a smaller population group) in the world
during this era, and far less cars on the roads.
During this time families lived altogether and generally the husband was the breadwinner, going off
to work and bringing home the monthly income, while the wife was expected to stay home and bake
and care for the family being the homemaker and teaching the children good values, respect and
obedience.
Today many families are broken, leaving the mother to go out to work and take care of the children
while also expected to bring home the monthly income. Fathers take far less responsibility creating a

happiness. The 1920's are often referred to as the "roaring twenties," but many histories purpose
that this is not a correct interpretation of this time period. America may have not been good for the
some of the lower class in this time period, but the 1920's were fantastic for most of the middle

and sing. Listening and dancing to jazz was a favorite pastime for a lot Americans in the 1920's.
After recently suffering through a recession, America began to prosper economically. During the
1920's the nation's manufacturing output rose by more than sixty percent (Brinkley, 634). There
were many technology advances during this time period. The automobile became one of the most

Age" came with dances such as "the Charleston". Jazz and other forms of music became an
important way of expressing feelings of the 1920s and these productions were put on in Night
Clubs and other settings where people could relax. Jazz was popular for its spontaneity and flare,
and it soon captured the new record industry. By 1924, there were more than 2.5 million radios in
American households. In 1920 the Westinghouse Company launched the first radio station, KDKA
in Pittsburgh. KDKA mostly broadcast news reports and talk shows until 1921, when the first
musical radio program was aired. Sound movies were first seen in the 1920's. The sound was not on
the film, but on synchronized phonograph records, it became very popular and the first full–length

Cause and Effect in the Roaring Twenties
The twenties saw tons of changes in mindset and showed everyone in the world that nothing was
impossible if you put your mind to it. Seemingly impossible feats were accomplished in the
twenties like the first ever liquid fueled rocket launch and the invention of a miracle drug. But those
were not the only things that were happening then. Fashion was changing, it was more acceptable
for women to show skin. Rules changed, the 18th amendment made the drinking of beer illegal,

also changing. In the twenties, F Scott Fitzgerald wrote one of the most influential books and maybe
the best book of all time, The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby was about a man named Jon Gatsby
that had started from nothing and rose to riches through hard work and persistence. This book was

gangs in many gig cities tried to control the illegal sale of alcohol. Al ?Scarface? Capone and
George ?Bugs? Moran were known as the 20th Century Gangsters. In 1929, on Valentines Day, Al
Capone?s men dressed up in police uniforms and shot members of the Moran gang. Prohibition
during the Roaring Twenties was one of many changes that American Society encountered.
