these are, I think, the three most common, and are certainly the three you are most likely to
encounter in your pre–statistics courses, if the topic comes up at all.
The "mean" is the "average" you 're used to, where you add up all the numbers and then divide by

Observation: Kean University Child Care Center
1. Context/ Introduction: For my third observation, on Monday October 17th, I returned back to the
Kean University Child Care Center. Just like my second observation I came for my observation for
the hour of 10:30–11:30 am. This time in the classroom there was four teacher aides and the
teacher Ms. Kierah. When I walked into the classroom I was surprised when one of the teacher

The rhetorical situation is defined as the context of a rhetorical event that consists of an issue, an
audience, and a set of restraints. While this may be true, there are many interpretations and versions
of these situations. In David Bartholomae's text, "Inventing the University," he explains the situation
of college students learning to fit the requirements of their college professors. Another author named
Kevin Davis formulated an essay titled, "Does Coming to College Mean Becoming Someone New,"
explores a similar situation of university students in terms of their commitments and changes they

his writing. He says, "He has to invent the university by assembling and mimicking its language"
(45). Davis shares a similar concept as Bartholomae, by stating, "They wanted me to make their
sense of the literature, to understand the texts as they understood them...I also had to learn a
particular way of reading and writing" (80). Both men have the same idea with current academia,
but they are on opposite sides. Bartholomae believes that while writing in unfamiliar ways, students
learn to become expert writers with practice. Davis explains the same scenario but believes that
change isn't necessarily needed, and certain changes made by students could be devastating in their
lives. When analyzing the discourse made by these two authors, it is apparent that both Bartholomae

Josh Suponcic8/27/14 The Disappearing Spoon Sam Kean, in his book The Disappearing Spoon
takes the reader on a ride through the periodic table of elements, as he talks about how the
periodic table evolved into its current day form. In the book he discusses the unearthing of the
elements, as he uses stories and information to describe how the elements were discovered. Sam
Kean very interestingly gives each element a human face and story that are each unique. The first
chapter in the book is named Geography is destiny. This chapter acts like a prologue in most
books. In this chapter Sam Kean delivers general background information, while he also is able to
give the reader a feel for his unique writing personality. All the information that is given revolves
around the periodic table of elements. He first shows how the table is set up and its shape. Kean
compares the elements to immobile bricks. He then talks about the noble gasses, which are the
most stable out of all the elements. He discusses that Helium in a way is the most important
element, while explaining that the writings of Plato, gave column 18 its name. After that he goes
on to explain the more unstable elements including halogens, alkalis and acids. Kean tells of acids
with exceedingly low pH levels, like a boron–based acid that a New Zealand chemist invented. This
