Case Study #3:
Jolson Automotive Hoist: The Market–Entry Decision
Jolson Automotive Hoist, Inc. began in 1991 after Mark Jolson had left his previous employer to pursue a hoist design that he believed to be a
potential success. In 1992, Jolson hired
Pierre Gagnon to handle the marketing side of the operations. The Jolson Lift was a surface scissor lift, as opposed to the traditional in–ground single
and four post lifts, making it appealing due to its mobility and easily installable. After the original design was made, Jolson continually made
improvements to his product, including more safety features, such as safety locks, that other lifts did not have. The Jolson Lift soon ... Show more

i. Mark Jolson is concerned of whether or not the reputation of quality will be maintained if they allow an outside company to build their product.
2. Joint Venture
a. This option would also be with Bar Maisse, but the two companies would share
50–50 in the risk, investment, and profits. Jolson Automotive Hoist could get involved in the further marketing of the lift through the Bar Maisse
distribution system. 3. Direct Investment
a. Jolson Automotive Hoist would establish a manufacturing facility and set up a management group to market the lift. Gagnon estimated the costs of
setting up a plant in Europe at $250,000 for capital equipment, $200,000 in incremental costs to set up the plant and carrying costs to cover $1,000,000
in inventory and accounts receivable. An additional cost of $80,000 is estimated for annual building rent including heat, light, and insurance.
Curry 4i. If the company were to joint venture or direct invest, Jolson would have to send Gagnon to head up the project. However, Gagnon was
instrumental in the operations of the company in their North American operations.
Mark Jolson has many concerns with the options to expand abroad. Some of his reservations are do to the difficulty to estimate the costs needed to
expand, the reliance of sales and profit upon uncontrollable elements such as the push and expertise of push by Bar Maisse, or
Bar Maisse could seek to take over the operation instead of cooperating.

Ford Super Duty Benefits
Ford Super Duty benefits from Novelis aluminum.
"Vehicle lightweighting" is one of those industry buzzwords that doesn't easily roll off the tongue. Outside of the auto industry, few people are familiar
with the term. But if you mention "Ford F–150" then the recognition is instantaneous – nearly everyone knows the current generation model has an
aluminum body.
Well, like all other manufacturers the Ford Motor Company relies on suppliers to provide them with the materials to form vehicle bodies. Most
manufacturers use steel body panels and plastic front and rear fascias. Carbon fiber is also used, but in very limited quantities, while aluminum is now
used as never before.

Why Does It Exist?
Why does it exist? – e.g. Naturally available in abundance? Comparative advantage?
Germany is leading automobile producer in the world. The sector is one of the largest employers in Germany with an annual output of approximately 6
million. German–designed cars have gained recognition at various award events like Car of the century, European car of the year, the world car of the
year annual awards and the International car of the year.
Germany is the birthplace of the automobile as Karl Benz invented and registered his "car powered by a gas engine" on 29th January, 1886.And by
1901, Germany's automobile industry was producing approximately 900 cars per year.
The turnabout for the industry, from the severe crisis faced by the Great Depression in the 1930s, came with the election of the Nazi party to power
wherein the Nazis implemented a policy of Motorisierung ("motorization") to raise the common people 's living standards, under which the
Volkswagen project was conceived to produce inexpensive "people 's car".
But due to World War II, most of the factories had been badly damaged. At the end of the war, some like Maybach and Adler did start up again but
they no more produced passenger cars. Then Volkswagen began producing the Beetle in 1945 and by 1955 they produced one million Beetles and by
1965, ten million. Meanwhile the others rebuilt their plants and eventually resumed production. [ ] [ ]

Globalization of the Automotive Industry Essays
Just like the other industries such as apparel, electronics, and consumer goods, the automobile industry has accelerated its foreign direct investment,
cross border trade and global production. The automobile industry has increased outsourcing and bundled value chain activities in major supplier
chains. As a result, more developed countries that serve as suppliers have increased their involvement in trade and FDI. With these increased supplier
capabilities, large national suppliers have become global suppliers and are now controlling multinational operations. This is because of their increased
capability of providing good and services to various lead firms all over the world. The automotive industry has a distinct firm structure. This ... Show

Participation of developing economies in globalization of the automotive industry was enhanced by innovations in telecommunication, technology
development, and transportation. These elements made it possible for the industry to fragment its production processes and creation of smaller
assembling plants that were located in different regions of the world. This segmentation of production processes created multiple global production
networks and expanded the global market making many developing countries reap the benefits of globalizing the automotive industry (Maxcy 108).
The auto industry adopted new globalization trends that could steer the restructuring of global manufacturing in order to meet the challenges of global
economies. There was the need to improve on efficiency and maintain a competitive level in the automobile industry. Automotive manufacturers from
Asia, Europe, and the US adopted global trends such as integrating low– income countries into the global division of labor. The aim of the automobile
industry in adopting globalization was to enable it shift from the economies of scale to the economies of scope. The industry started focusing more on
manufacturing capabilities that could enable it meet the increasing marketing demands. The rapid changes in technology–forced automakers

Case Study Of BMW
BMW (U.S) Holding Corporation is a franchise of the high–end performance based global automotive company BMW. For the first time in its history,
BMW is to launch its first American made car, the BMW Z3 Roadster. Having only made cars in Germany, this time the car is to be assembled in
Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW's objective is to expand its market share in the U.S., make the brand name more global and improve its dealer
network. With this in mind, the company developed a two phases launch plan for the BMW Z3 Roadster.
BMW used predominately non–traditional marketing methods such as product placement in the James Bond movie GoldenEye in phase 1. This
approach was successful and created excitement and anticipation among potential customers for the release of the car in March of next year.
In phase 2, the company faced the challenged of sustaining the hype around its new car and ensuring that potential customers actually purchase the Z3
when it is available. After reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of both marketing methods (traditional and non–traditional) and considering the
success of phase 1, it is recommended for BMW to continues use the non–traditional approach and use minimum traditional strategies.
Tactical recommendations for phase 2 include emphasis on the augmented product, special promotions on the dealership level while continue to work
with MGM to promote the Z3 through the James Bond image.

The auto industry and area of commerce in which automobile models are planned, designed, manufactured, and marketed. The automobile industry is
concerned with profits and competition. And depending on the country consumer demands for styling, safety, and efficiency differ and with labor
relations and manufacturing efficiency too.
In the Automobile industry, many companies need to strive to make better and affordable cars. The automobile industry is concerned with profits and
competition, consumer demands for styling, safety, and efficiency and it is also involved with labor relations and manufacturing efficiency. For
example, in 2007, more than 73 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide. In 2007, a total of 71.9
million new automobiles were sold worldwide: 22.9 million in Europe, 21.4 million in Asia–Pacific, 19.4 million in North America, 4.4 million in Latin
America, 2.4 million in the Middle East and 1.4 million in Africa. The markets in North America and Japan were stagnant, while those in South
America and Asia grew strongly. Of the major markets, Russia, Brazil and China saw the most rapid growth. In 2008, with rapidly rising oil prices,
industries such as the automotive industry are experiencing a combination of pricing pressures from raw material costs and changes in consumer
buying habits. The industry is also facing increasing external

Why Invest in Germany?
Germany is an excellent country to expand new products and services into as it is located in the heart of Europe, following a constitutional monarchy
with a parliamentary government and a Prime Minister which has the power to appoint and remove ministers. As a member of the G8, Germany
contributes significantly to the world 's economy. The Gross Domestic Product in Germany was valued at USD $3634.82 billion in 2013 which is
equivalent to 5.86% of the world's economy. In Germany, more than 95% of the population speaks German as their first language.
Germany is Canada's 8th largest trading partner. Canadian exports to Germany are mainly comprised of aircraft parts, iron ores, coal and copper.
Canada's trade to Germany is primarily resource based while Germany exports are mostly automotive parts. However, other major imports include
medicaments, medical instruments, and blood fractions.
Investing in Germany provides numerous businesses with large opportunities to expand their business into Germany. Germany has the largest
economy in all of Europe, with an access to 454 million consumers. Productivity has risen over 30% in the past 5 years. Adding on to that Germany is

Cadillac's Marketing and Business Strategy
Cadillac's Marketing/Business Strategy Massachusetts Introduction The Cadillac belongs to a luxury car segment that was earlier dominated by
Packard in the US and by Benz in Europe. The positioning of the Cadillac and twenty years of struggle to make it number one has paid off today even
though General Motors is in trouble. The Cadillac survives as a separate entity in the luxury market and this again is the result of a most brilliant
strategy. History and Present Position America's most prestigious automobile manufacturers were the Packard in the segment that now is ruled by
Cadillac. With fifty–nine years of history Packard defined the market segment for luxury line of autos. However after World War II years in 1956
Packard folded and it happened ironically when the US was in the biggest automotive booms in history. The fall of the Packard could also be
attributed to the General Motor's strategy that with the Cadillac tried to knock off Packard. While Packard was the 'prestige car' the Cadillac was
offered as an alternate. During the 1930's and up to 50s the market for Cadillac was low, and nowhere near that of Packard. Cadillac was the second
car in the luxury market. Carefully the Ford offering was sustained in spite of loss. Then Packard made the fatal mistake of entering the low price car
segment, which was simply disastrous because it lost the 'prestige car' segment. (Ward, 1995) That prompted GM to take over the segment, and
Packard did not do well in the

Challenges Facing The American Automotive Industry Essay
CHALLENGES FACING THE AMERICAN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY3 The American automotive industry faces several environmental challenges.
It has to stand up to foreign competition in the global market. Laws that regulate things such as emissions are always a concern. Automobiles produced
by the industry may not be many consumers' first choice based on the consumers' geographic whereabouts or that a certain foreign automobile brand
almost has a monopoly on a geographic area. The global automotive industry is constantly evolving, so the American automotive industry must evolve
alongside it. The American automotive industry must come up with creative ways in order to overcome these environmental challenges. The American
automotive industry always has to defend itself from foreign competition. For example, in 2012 only 21,150 vehicles – cars, trucks, and buses – were
imported from the United States into Japan, but 131,080 vehicles were imported from Germany (JAMA, 2013). This just goes to show that, at least in
certain geographical areas, the United States does not even come close to leading the market in industry sales. Since there is really nothing that the
industry can do to counteract this, it must establish itself as a market leader in the domestic market. One of the ways that the American automotive
industry has incentivized purchasing American–made vehicles as opposed to importing foreign–made vehicles is to impose a duty on most
foreign–made vehicles. Canadian–made vehicles are

Joint Venture
By involving ourselves more with the production and marketing processes of Bar Maisse, and starting a joint venture with the company, we would be
able to gain a far larger share of the profits of the sales of our hoists, and a far greater influence over the market compared to what we would have
through a licensing agreement. With our expertise in the field of hoist repair and production, and Bar Maisse's experience with the European market,
we will likely be able to gain a larger market share together than either of us would be able to alone.
Direct Investment
For Baxton Technology to make a direct investment, construct manufacturing plants and sales offices of its own in Europe, is a distinct possibility. The
company has the resources to go through with a large–scale operation such as this, and doing so would allow Baxton Technology retain all the profit
they make off their hoist sales. However, this would be a very expensive and risky venture, especially as Baxton Technology has no experience with the
European market.
Proposal
We propose Baxton Technology choose to enter a Joint Venture with Bar Maisse to get access to the European Market. The European Market offers
great opportunities for Baxton Technology because the European countries France, Germany, Italy and UK each have more than 20 million vehicles in
use, with Germany having the largest domestic fleet of 44 million vehicles followed by Italy, France and the UK. The

During the analysis, FOG's positioning will be analysed and reasons for a close distance to competitors' prices will be assumed.
Within the automotive market, the place of distribution will be analysed, which demonstrates potential disadvantages to competitors due to the retailing

However, as the model of four P′s proofs advantages (price, promotion) as well as disadvantages (product in terms of branding and place) and

Swot Analysis Of ' The ' Ford '
Background Ford is experimenting with ride–sharing services that are similar to Uber and Lyft in order to obtain growing acceptance and to determine
new ways to expand its business. Uber has become a phenomenon that has transformed the market and is the go–to form of transportation for younger
individuals. Uber is an app–based service that is easy to use and convenient for consumers living in urban areas. Uber is changing the market and car
makers, such as Ford, fear that younger consumers will choose the convenience of ride–sharing services as opposed to purchasing a vehicle. The major
advantage for younger drivers is that "individuals gain the benefits of private vehicle use without the costs and responsibilities of ownership," which...

Promoting a car–specific ride–sharing service that is both national and international contributes to Ford's long term growth and its expanding business.
Problem Statement Consumers are changing their preferences on personal transportation by switching from purchasing vehicles to ride–sharing
services such as Uber and Lyft. The changing market is having an increasingly negative impact on passenger vehicle sales. Alternative Solutions
Developing and experimenting with competitive solutions for ride–sharing services in response to Uber and Lyft is the best strategy for automotive
companies such as Ford. Services such as "GoDrive" and similar programs have been launched by Ford in London and Germany and received positive
feedback "after a successful 100–driver pilot, where the company has opened the program to 1900 more drivers" (Feinburg, 2015). Due to the success
of Ford's "GoDrive" services, Ford currently remodels its ride–sharing services after each trial run to sustain its long term growth. An alternative
solution that Ford must consider is to provide consumers, particularly younger individuals, with incentives to use its ride–sharing services such as
"GoDrive" as opposed to Uber and Lyft. In order to create demand for Ford's new services, the incentives must be advertised, so consumers are aware
of the new "Uber–like" service. Once Ford's ride–sharing service is widespread and accepted by

Some examples include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, and tension neck syndromes (Government of Canada, Canadian

processes require the worker to perform tasks involving repetitiveness (focused in this report), manual material handling, whole body vibration, and
more. These processes involve automation, semi–auto, and manual repetitive tasks. Automation involves a robot performing the process, thus
removing the need for a human to do the heavy lifting. However, most of the processes still require manual assembly via a human (Nur et al., 2014).

International Business: Volkswagen
The foundation of Volkswagen dates back to the Third Reich. For the opening of the international automobile show in Berlin 1934, Adolf Hitler

Contrary to this, Germany shows a strong tendency for outward trade flows of both merchandise trade as well as services in the breadth dimension. In
this context, Germany's focus on manufacturing becomes evident with reference to higher scores obtained for both inward and outward merchandise

continuing to sharpen its global profile as expressed in an increasing score in the breadth dimension.

German Economy Essay
Economics
The German economy is the largest in Europe and worldwide Germany has the fifth largest economy ("World fact book", n.d.). It is clear that the
German economy holds a key position in the world marketplace. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth is an important consideration for foreign
investment as it speaks to the overall health of an economy. GDP growth can be attributed to spending and investments both on and from imports
and exports ("What is GDP", 2005). In 2014 the reported GDP growth rate in Germany was 1.4%, up .9 % from the prior year ("World fact book"
n.d.). The Eurozone was deeply affected by a recession stemming from the US and made worse by poor economic conditions in Greece and Spain,
among other countries in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2014 trade as share of GDP was 70.8 percent, down less than three percent from the two years prior ("Merchandise trade", n.d.). This is one of those
areas in which only time will tell whether Germany will continue to prosper and be the financial backbone of the Eurozone.
GDP per capita is also an important indicator of economic health. GDP per capita takes the total output of a country and divides it by the number of
people in a countries population; this indicated the buying power of individuals. GDP per capita in Germany as reported for 2014 was slightly over
47,000 USD ("Countries with the largest", n.d.). Looking at GDP per capita when compared to other countries in the Eurozone Germany is not fairing
so well. Luxembourg leads the world wide GDP per capita and that of the Eurozone with a high rate of 116,750 USD ("Countries with the largest",
n.d.). Worldwide Germany ranks 16th in the Eurozone, Germany was beat out by Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands in GDP
per capita ("Countries with the largest", n.d.). While the GDP per capita rate in Germany is stronger than many other countries it is not competitive
with other countries which have economies comparable in size to Germany nor economies centrally located in the Eurozone.
A low inflation rate averaging .91 percent for 2014 should help to increase purchases in Germany. This is because consumers can get more for the

1.1 Primary Activities
Inbound logistics
A specific German characteristic of its supplier system is the so called "Automotive Cluster." "A cluster is a concentration of institutions and companies
in a particular branch of industry within a particular area." Companies can highly benefit from this factor through sharing competences, short delivery
times and close co–operations. These are major influences on BMW 's inbound logistics, meaning that most of its aspects, like storing and distributing,
are outsourced to their suppliers.
Two major clusters of BMW are Leipzig and the so called "Automobildreieck" (automotive triangular) which includes the cities Dingolfing/Landshut–
Regensburg – Ingolstadt. According to a research of the IWD (Cologne) about 20.7% of all social insurance registered employees work for the

Industry Profile Of The Automotive Industry
INDUSTRY PROFILE:
Automotive sector, as a business industry took shape, in the era of early nineteenth when Henry Ford started production of cars in bulk. And, this led to
the development of the industry. After then, the U.S. automotive companies dominated the automotive market around the globe with no notable
competitors. In 1945, after the Second World War, theautomotive industry of other technologically advanced nations such as Germany, Japan and
certain European nations got momentum, and started spreading in the world market.
During the British Raj, there were a few automotive assembly units in India. Following the independence, in 1947, the Government of India and the
private sector launched joint efforts to establish automotive manufacturing industry in India and Hindustan motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok

Economics/ Competitive Strategies and Government Policies Paper
Over one hundred years ago in Germany and France the automotive industry has become a major source of industrial and economic stability
worldwide. In this report we will describe how the auto industry is affected by new companies entering the market, mergers, and globalization, on
pricing and the sustainability of profits. We will explore mergers and merger activity within the industry as well as current and expected government
policies and regulations in place to address issues related to externalities. We will also take a look at the effects of global competition on the decisions
made by management with regards to change in labor demand, supply, relations, unions, and rules and regulations in the auto industry. Considering the
aforementioned topic on the auto industry's competitive strategies and Government policies you will say that this report aims to explain how these two
areas have impacted the auto industry and will affect it going forward.
Globalization
Increasing globalization in the automotive industry is changing the way of traditional partnerships. Ten years ago, it was questionable to pursue business
in markets such as India and China because political and business conditions were not conducive to direct foreign investment (Emerging Markets,

On another note, manufacturing engineers and quality engineers play a key role in the development of new vehicles. Manufacturing engineers work
with the design engineers to ensure the vehicle they have designed can be produced in a high volume environment. According to Automotive
Engineering HQ, an international headquarters for automotive engineering teams, "[Manufacturing engineers] will review how all the parts are
assembled to ensure that they can develop a process that will be able to assemble and install everything from the circuit boards in the radio all the way
to the bumper of the vehicle". Creating the most efficient method of assembly is the chief responsibility of the manufacturing team; additionally,
working alongside the manufacturing engineers, test engineers implement check points in the assembly process to guarantee correct assembly and
functionality. Comparatively, "Quality engineers are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the design, development and production processes to
make sure that the end product will be as robust and meet the highest quality standards possible" (Automotive). Particularly in the automotive industry,
the role of quality engineer is vital given that errors or flaws in the product can cause costly recalls or even death; in addition, quality engineers are

Ferdinand Porsche was an Amazing Automotive Engineer
Ferdinand Porsche was an auto–motive engineer, who brought many marvelous inventions and designs to this world. He was a nazi war profiteer,
and a member of the SS. However, he had never any real connection to the Nazi party, being of a Serbian, austrian decent. Many of his great designs
came through his days in the SS, but his inventions before he joined where also of much respect and importance. Porsche starts his life out in a
company that designs motor vehicles for rich and famous people, the only people who could afford the luxury of owning a vehicle like that.
Nonetheless, he had been working on many successful designs for not only gasoline– driven cars, but electric, and electric hybrid cars as well. In this
age he had successfully developed the worlds first hybrid and fully electric cars. These cars still exist today, and where sold at the time to the prince
of Austria. Later though, during the heated Nazi occupation of Europe, he set his sights on not being a target to the Nazis, due to his Serbian
background. He moves to Germany to continue his work as an auto–manufacturer. As Hitlers rise to power commences in Germany, he is asked to
change his citizenship to Germany by many high ranking officials. This was due to the fact that they wanted to keep him alive and not persecute him,
for the had very valuable skills as an automotive designer. He reluctantly agrees, joining not only just the Socialist workers of Germany party, but the

Germany : Post War Anomaly
Germany: Post War Anomaly Germany has quite an interesting (and difficult) economic development history from World War II and the Nazis into
the modern EU power house it is today. Problems set into place by poor government management and an effects of war such as price controls and
inflation set by Hitler in 1936 left the German economy in shambles after World War II (Henderson). These policies were typical during war times
(also done by the United States and the United Kingdom), but had detrimental effects on the population. The end result was a currency that was almost
worthless, there was a mass shortage of goods because the suppliers did not find it worth their time to produce when they face price controls that keep

This means that the members of this school of thought hated the totalitarian mindset that was the Nazi Party. The members of the school believed in
things such as free markets, with a basic income tax system, and limits on monopolies (Henderson). Two members of the school, Wilhelm Röpke
and Ludwig Erhard, sought to try and fix this mess. Röpke and Erhard were both in agreement that the best way to try and tackle the repressed
inflation was to undergo currency reform and to put an end to price controls (Henderson). This faced a lot of opposition because people were afraid
that this would lead to a large central government. However, Ludwig Erhard wins the debate because of his anti–Nazi views, this meant that in 1945
Erhard was appointed to Bavarian minister of finance, then in 1947 he became the director of the bizonal Office of Economic Opportunity, permitting
him to advise the U.S. General, Lucius D. Clay, governor of the U.S. Zone (Henderson). It was then that Erhard started down the road to a brilliant
currency reform. Essentially, his plan was to take the current currency, reichsmarks, and exchange it for a smaller number of deutsche marks (DM) as
the new legal currency. The currency reform took place Sunday, June 20, 1948 and was highly complex, after the change to DM many Germans saw
reductions in their overall wealth, the net results after the swap was about 93% contraction in money supply (Henderson). Another policy that Erhard

The Porsche Automotive Group firm has been considered to be a benchmark of precision within the market for decades. According to Henderson &
Reavis (2009), "By 2007, Porsche had become the world's most financially profitable automaker on an annual per unit basis." They then go on to
mention, "This is especially impressive when considering that Porsche produces over 100,000 vehicles annually." From Porsche's inception their focus
has been firmly placed on the finer points of engineering. Sinse the 1930s this firm has been translating their expertise of engineering into the esthetic

Continuing after this point, Porsche has consistently maintained a growth in revenue. According to Henderson & Reavis (2009), "Per unit produced,
Porsche records an average of $91,974, and by 2007 their annual income capped at $9.4 billion on revenue of $10 billion." With this growth it must be
mentioned that the firm has experience some down points. For example, in the mid–1990s due to poor production processes and a recession in the
United, which seriously affect sales nearly pushed Porsche Automotive Group into bankruptcy. In the end this led to a time when the firm was
vulnerable to takeover. Another such time would be in 2008 when the firm's business integrity would come into question due to their actions
surrounding the failed takeover of their former sub–division VW.
Porsche Automotive Group primarily specialized in luxury and sport models as well as other small scale ventures such as in the aeronautics industry.
The first vehicle produced by a Porsche subsidiary was the pre–runner to the VW Beetle, the VW Type 60. The firm's leading models during the
post–World War 11 (WW2), era were the 550 Spyder, 904

2016 Outlook For Automotive M & A
The 2016 Outlook for Automotive M&A
The easy–money policy of the Federal Reserve and the cash–swollen balance sheets of corporations and private equity firms alike contributed to an
explosion of deal–making in 2015. Long term growth in vehicle production and the positive outlook for vehicle sales over the next five years have
made automotive one of the leading sectors for M&A. We expect deal activity in the automotive sector to remain strong during 2016, but to taper off
from 2015 levels. The biggest factor that will suppress deal activity this year is the impending interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve. Other
deal–squelching factors include geopolitical instability (e.g., in the Middle East and Russia) and the relative scarcity of companies that can be
purchased at bargain prices.
Favorable Conditions Exist for Automotive M&A
Even though macroeconomic factors will have a chilling effect on deal activity, automotive is likely to remain one of the hottest sectors for M&A.
During its resurgence over the past five years, the automotive industry has been highly profitable. In addition, the growth prospects for the industry are
favorable, especially in light of the overall low–growth economic environment. Despite the recovery, economic growth in the U.S. and overseas has
been stagnant. Average GDP growth in the U.S. over the past five years is at 2.4 percent. Other leading world economies such as Japan, Germany, and
the United Kingdom have likewise experienced

One of the most influential economic indicators in forecasting the health of economy is Foreign Trade. Each month and each year, the U.S Bureau of

Sometimes, trade deficits do not reflect other changes, such as the dollar value. In this case, the United States dollars have significantly increased over
the years, the stronger dollars allow the United States to import more with cheaper prices from many countries, such as Japan and China. Additionally,
below is the table comparing the balance of trade with the GDP since the Great Recession in 2007–2009. Even though there are some years that GDP
grew and BOT decreased, that only take up a small percent compared to the rest of the years, when BOP grew, real GDP also grew. This means, having
a trade deficit is not as bad as it looks, and trade deficit actually has been contributing to growing GDP over the years.

Legislation: Governments all over the world is enforcing legislations to protect the environment based on the international agreement on climate change

greenhouse gases.

Supply chain: The top five global supply chain challenges are – visibility, cost containment, risk management, increasing customer demands and
globalization (IBM, 2009). Supply chain consists of different suppliers and distributors, interacting with each other. In UK the domestic supply chain
is relatively weak. On average only a third of the parts that go into vehicles manufactured are sourced from the UK. Stepping up the amount of UK
content is dependent on a stronger automotive supply chain in the UK. The UK suppliers could take a bigger share of the market with ВЈ3 billion of
opportunities identified by the Automotive Council.
Skills: Future opportunities and meeting increasing production demand has highlighted a shortage of engineers and other skilled workers. Compare to
Germany, the UK needs to build up a comprehensive talent pipeline including in the supply chain, starting in schools and encouraging a career path to
apprenticeships, graduates and post graduates. Failure to do this will make the UK less attractive as a place to invest and will restrict supply chain
growth.
Competitiveness: Another economic driver is the increased competitiveness of companies implementing green manufacturing technologies (Dwyer J,

N Demand Side Benefits Of Scale
В· Demand–side benefits of scale (network effect): For a crucial products like vehicles, the buyer will trust more to larger automotive company which
have already been in the industry. The long–lasting and well known automotive companies such as General Motors, Chrysler, and Toyota create
network effect among the potential buyers, which is they will more likely to purchase the trusted brands instead of new entrants. The purchase intention
graph above shows that most consumers in the US still want to purchase major brands such as Toyota, Honda, GM, and Ford consecutively on the last
year. While the other existing automotive brands have purchase intention below average, it will be difficult for new entrants to fight competitors to
capture the market.
В· Unequal access to distribution channels: The new entrants in auto industry must deal with the distribution channels for selling their products. With
the high entry barriers from incumbents, entrants usually have to put high investment to build their own distribution channels.
Automotive Industry Online notices that the existing loyalty to major brands has eroded. At the same time, foreign low–cost and high quality
automotive producers such as Kia and Tata have the potential of taking market share from domestic producers especially from the growing low–end
market. The domestic automakers should anticipate this situation by utilizing customer switching cost and emphasizing brand loyalty program.

Statement Of Purpose In Engineering
Statement Of Purpose As a young boy, I would often dismantle my small toy cars and re–model them. The activity never lost its zest and as I grew up,
It is very fascinating to watch different cars passing by me day and night. I always wonder how cars are designed and developed and I dreamed
that one day I wished to become an engineer and work towards my dream of designing cars for the best names in the world. It is this pursuit of
knowledge that has been my motivation and has made me to apply for masters program in your esteemed university. I was confident about my choice
and knew that it was the best way forward...till destiny took me to Germany. Engineering has been my passion from the start. I took the first step to
become an engineer by securing 80.3% in SSC and 91% in HSC. Graduating with 8.755 CGPA in my undergraduate studies is proof that I have a
strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering. During the studies, the subjects Internal Combustion Engines, Automobile Engineering,
Thermodynamics, Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines, design of transmission systems captivated my interest and also I had the opportunity to ...

of I.C. Engines' by J.B Heywood and 'Automotive Engineering Fundamentals' by Richard Stone and Jeffrey K. Ball. It also had me browsing
through the pages of periodicals and magazines in the college library. I keep reading a lot of car magazines as well like Autocar, Overdrive, Car and

four–wheeled vehicle propelled by an engine designed by Daimler. The first Mercedes was built nearly 15 years later in 1901 by Maybach, then

MNGT432 CaseStudy3 Jolson Curry 1Brittany Curry Dr. Taylor MNGT 432 22 April 2014 Case Study #3: Jolson Automotive Hoist: The Market–Entry Decision Jolson Automotive Hoist, Inc. began in 1991 after Mark Jolson had left his previous employer to pursue a hoist design that he believed to be a potential success. In 1992, Jolson hired Pierre Gagnon to handle the marketing side of the operations. The Jolson Lift was a surface scissor lift, as opposed to the traditional in–ground single and four post lifts, making it appealing due to its mobility and easily installable. After the original design was made, Jolson continually made improvements to his product, including more safety features, such as safety locks, that other lifts did not have. The Jolson Lift soon ... Joint Venture a. This option would also be with Bar Maisse, but the two companies would share 50–50 in the risk, investment, and profits. Jolson Automotive Hoist could get involved in the further marketing of the lift through the Bar Maisse distribution system. 3. Direct Investment a. Jolson Automotive Hoist would establish a manufacturing facility and set up a management group to market the lift. Gagnon estimated the costs of setting up a plant in Europe at $250,000 for capital equipment, $200,000 in incremental costs to set up the plant and carrying costs to cover $1,000,000 in inventory and accounts receivable. An additional cost of $80,000 is estimated for annual building rent including heat, light, and insurance. Curry 4i. If the company were to joint venture or direct invest, Jolson would have to send Gagnon to head up the project. However, Gagnon was instrumental in the operations of the company in their North American operations. Mark Jolson has many concerns with the options to expand abroad. Some of his reservations are do to the difficulty to estimate the costs needed to expand, the reliance of sales and profit upon uncontrollable elements such as the push and expertise of push by Bar Maisse, or Bar Maisse could seek to take over the operation instead of cooperating.

The sector is one of the largest employers in Germany with an annual output of approximately 6 million. German–designed cars have gained recognition at various award events like Car of the century, European car of the year, the world car of the year annual awards and the International car of the year. BMW used predominately non–traditional marketing methods such as product placement in the James Bond movie GoldenEye in phase 1. This approach was successful and created excitement and anticipation among potential customers for the release of the car in March of next year. In phase 2, the company faced the challenged of sustaining the hype around its new car and ensuring that potential customers actually purchase the Z3 when it is available. After reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of both marketing methods (traditional and non–traditional) and considering the success of phase 1, it is recommended for BMW to continues use the non–traditional approach and use minimum traditional strategies. Tactical recommendations for phase 2 include emphasis on the augmented product, special promotions on the dealership level while continue to work with MGM to promote the Z3 through the James Bond image. • 12. Cadillac's Marketing and Business Strategy Cadillac's Marketing/Business Strategy Massachusetts Introduction The Cadillac belongs to a luxury car segment that was earlier dominated by Packard in the US and by Benz in Europe. The positioning of the Cadillac and twenty years of struggle to make it number one has paid off today even though General Motors is in trouble. The Cadillac survives as a separate entity in the luxury market and this again is the result of a most brilliant strategy. History and Present Position America's most prestigious automobile manufacturers were the Packard in the segment that now is ruled by Cadillac. With fifty–nine years of history Packard defined the market segment for luxury line of autos. However after World War II years in 1956 Packard folded and it happened ironically when the US was in the biggest automotive booms in history. The fall of the Packard could also be attributed to the General Motor's strategy that with the Cadillac tried to knock off Packard. While Packard was the 'prestige car' the Cadillac was offered as an alternate. During the 1930's and up to 50s the market for Cadillac was low, and nowhere near that of Packard. Cadillac was the second car in the luxury market. Carefully the Ford offering was sustained in spite of loss. Then Packard made the fatal mistake of entering the low price car segment, which was simply disastrous because it lost the 'prestige car' segment. (Ward, 1995) That prompted GM to take over the segment, and Packard did not do well in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Challenges Facing The American Automotive Industry Essay CHALLENGES FACING THE AMERICAN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY3 The American automotive industry faces several environmental challenges. It has to stand up to foreign competition in the global market. Laws that regulate things such as emissions are always a concern. Automobiles produced by the industry may not be many consumers' first choice based on the consumers' geographic whereabouts or that a certain foreign automobile brand almost has a monopoly on a geographic area. The global automotive industry is constantly evolving, so the American automotive industry must evolve alongside it. The American automotive industry must come up with creative ways in order to overcome these environmental challenges. The American automotive industry always has to defend itself from foreign competition. For example, in 2012 only 21,150 vehicles – cars, trucks, and buses – were imported from the United States into Japan, but 131,080 vehicles were imported from Germany (JAMA, 2013). This just goes to show that, at least in certain geographical areas, the United States does not even come close to leading the market in industry sales. Since there is really nothing that the industry can do to counteract this, it must establish itself as a market leader in the domestic market. One of the ways that the American automotive industry has incentivized purchasing American–made vehicles as opposed to importing foreign–made vehicles is to impose a duty on most foreign–made vehicles. Canadian–made vehicles are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Problem Statement Consumers are changing their preferences on personal transportation by switching from purchasing vehicles to ride–sharing services such as Uber and Lyft. The changing market is having an increasingly negative impact on passenger vehicle sales. Alternative Solutions Developing and experimenting with competitive solutions for ride–sharing services in response to Uber and Lyft is the best strategy for automotive companies such as Ford. Services such as "GoDrive" and similar programs have been launched by Ford in London and Germany and received positive feedback "after a successful 100–driver pilot, where the company has opened the program to 1900 more drivers" (Feinburg, 2015). Due to the success of Ford's "GoDrive" services, Ford currently remodels its ride–sharing services after each trial run to sustain its long term growth. An alternative solution that Ford must consider is to provide consumers, particularly younger individuals, with incentives to use its ride–sharing services such as "GoDrive" as opposed to Uber and Lyft. • 32. Ferdinand Porsche was an Amazing Automotive Engineer Ferdinand Porsche was an auto–motive engineer, who brought many marvelous inventions and designs to this world. He was a nazi war profiteer, and a member of the SS. However, he had never any real connection to the Nazi party, being of a Serbian, austrian decent. Many of his great designs came through his days in the SS, but his inventions before he joined where also of much respect and importance. Porsche starts his life out in a company that designs motor vehicles for rich and famous people, the only people who could afford the luxury of owning a vehicle like that. Nonetheless, he had been working on many successful designs for not only gasoline– driven cars, but electric, and electric hybrid cars as well. In this age he had successfully developed the worlds first hybrid and fully electric cars. These cars still exist today, and where sold at the time to the prince of Austria. Later though, during the heated Nazi occupation of Europe, he set his sights on not being a target to the Nazis, due to his Serbian background. He moves to Germany to continue his work as an auto–manufacturer. As Hitlers rise to power commences in Germany, he is asked to change his citizenship to Germany by many high ranking officials. This was due to the fact that they wanted to keep him alive and not persecute him, for the had very valuable skills as an automotive designer. • 33. Germany : Post War Anomaly Germany: Post War Anomaly Germany has quite an interesting (and difficult) economic development history from World War II and the Nazis into the modern EU power house it is today. Problems set into place by poor government management and an effects of war such as price controls and inflation set by Hitler in 1936 left the German economy in shambles after World War II (Henderson). These policies were typical during war times (also done by the United States and the United Kingdom), but had detrimental effects on the population. The end result was a currency that was almost worthless, there was a mass shortage of goods because the suppliers did not find it worth their time to produce when they face price controls that keep their products... The members of the school believed in things such as free markets, with a basic income tax system, and limits on monopolies (Henderson). Two members of the school, Wilhelm RГ¶pke and Ludwig Erhard, sought to try and fix this mess. RГ¶pke and Erhard were both in agreement that the best way to try and tackle the repressed inflation was to undergo currency reform and to put an end to price controls (Henderson). This faced a lot of opposition because people were afraid that this would lead to a large central government. However, Ludwig Erhard wins the debate because of his anti–Nazi views, this meant that in 1945 Erhard was appointed to Bavarian minister of finance, then in 1947 he became the director of the bizonal Office of Economic Opportunity, permitting him to advise the U.S. General, Lucius D. Clay, governor of the U.S. Zone (Henderson). It was then that Erhard started down the road to a brilliant currency reform. Essentially, his plan was to take the current currency, reichsmarks, and exchange it for a smaller number of deutsche marks (DM) as the new legal currency. The currency reform took place Sunday, June 20, 1948 and was highly complex, after the change to DM many Germans saw reductions in their overall wealth, the net results after the swap was about 93% contraction in money supply (Henderson). Long term growth in vehicle production and the positive outlook for vehicle sales over the next five years have made automotive one of the leading sectors for M&A. We expect deal activity in the automotive sector to remain strong during 2016, but to taper off from 2015 levels. The biggest factor that will suppress deal activity this year is the impending interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve. Other deal–squelching factors include geopolitical instability (e.g., in the Middle East and Russia) and the relative scarcity of companies that can be purchased at bargain prices. Favorable Conditions Exist for Automotive M&A Even though macroeconomic factors will have a chilling effect on deal activity, automotive is likely to remain one of the hottest sectors for M&A.
