The media pieces in this unit were selected to help you think about the role that technology and social media play in the ways that society gives and how organizations ask for funds. Do you remember where you were on September 11, 2001? Chances are that you, along with the rest of the world, watched the horror of that day unfold on national television. We did not have to wait for the evening news or the morning paper to see and know what had happened. It happened in front of our eyes. Since that fateful day, there have been a number of disasters around the world; and there have been significant changes in the uses of technology and social media. In this assignment, you will construct a timeline of global events that have happened since 9/11, and analyze the impact technology and social media have had to spread information, photographs, videos, etc. around the world and drive charitable giving. What implications and opportunities do you see in the future for charitable fund development because of technology and, in particular, social media? Your submitted assignment should be 5–7 pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and must follow APA guidelines. You must include references to at least three scholarly resources that are not part of the required readings for this course. Your writing should demonstrate effective communication, using proper spelling and grammar, and be appropriate for a doctoral level learner. As we said earlier, the development of the Internet involved a considerable period of more-or-less parallel evolution of a number of technologies and organizations. But like any process of social evolution, some events were more important than others in terms of influencing where we are today. Your task in this project is to identify some of those key turning points.
There are a lot of tools to help you. One of the most useful is “Hobbes’ Internet Timeline” found at
http://www.zakon.org/robert/internet/timeline/
, a compilation of key events in Internet evolution dating back to the 1950s. You should also be prepared to consult some of the readings and other resources suggested in the Background page as useful sources of information. Your aim is to get a picture clear in your mind about how the different threads of the Internet got woven together.
Case Assignment
For this assignment, write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following question:
Identify what you consider to be the five most important and/or significant events contributing to the evolution of the modern Internet that occurred in the period 1800–1991.
Provide a few paragraphs explaining why you consider each event to be one of the most important Internet-related milestones. Be sure to cite any resources that you used. The fifth and last event in your catalog should be the following, from Hobbes’ 1991 listing:

Before we examine and critique the role(s) of media in our social world(s), it is essential to identify and narrow our scope by defining terms; after all, "media" is a term used very loosely in contemporary culture. As Croteau & Hoynes (2019) explain in your textbook , the term "media" is the PLURAL of medium and is derived from medius,which is the Latin term for "middle."
A helpful way to think about these concepts is that mediumsfacilitate communication between (are in the middle of) a sender and receiver; for example, television is a medium that facilitates programming from producers/creators/networks to audiences. Other mediums include radio, print, film, and the internet, and notices that they are both digital and non-digital (print).
The term "media" is the plural of these mediums, but is often used incorrectly; although it doesn't sound like correct grammar, the proper way (within the field of Media Studies) to use "media" in a sentence is "media are" not "media is." When individuals, including politicians, members of non-profits, etc. say "media is" and fail to recognize that the concept of "media" actually encompasses many different mediums with various logics, there is an assumption that all mediums function the same, include the same message, and follow the same regulations and economic structure. For example, when "the media" is blamed for violent action or political outcomes, there is a misunderstanding that needs to be refined; are we talking about film? Television? News media? Are we talking about the digital edition of the news? Are we talking about the Tweets that come from that news organization? In other words, it is important to be specific about mediums when making claims about impact, and when referring to "media" it is important to remember that this is a plural term.
Now, the next step in introductory terminology is to identify which media are "interpersonal" and which mediums are considered "mass" - this course focuses on "mass" media. Some of you may have taken Communications courses that focus more on interpersonal communication, which is one-to-one, includes a single known receiver, and is very interactive (.
Are Social Media Websites Harmful To The Youth?
This study was done to determine if social media websites negatively affect the youth of America. Many young people in the United States have accounts on social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace and studies have shown that these websites can have negative affects. With so many young people using these social media sites, studies on the negative affects should surely be done. After conducting a survey, and analyzing many secondary academic resources I determined that in fact the youth could be negatively affected by these social media websites. They are negatively affected in many different ways such as them being addictive, and distracting in an academic environment, but also can affect the youth negatively in several other ways. After coming to these conclusions, I am certain that more studies need to be done on this issue, so we can reverse some of the negative aspects of social media websites, and find a way to be able to use them in the best possible way.

3. Was each article cited an example of Primary or Secondary research? As defined by the Library at UC Berkley, “Primary sources were either created during the time period being studied, or were created at a later date by a participant in the events being studied (as in the case of memoirs) and they reflect the individual viewpoint of a participant or observer. Primary sources enable the researcher to get as close as possible to what actually happened during an historical event or time period.”
“ A secondary source is a work that interprets or analyzes an historical event or phenomenon. It is generally at least one step removed from the event. Examples include scholarly or popular books and articles, reference books, and textbooks.”
Req# 2--TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION AND PRACTICE:
An Annotated Bibliography will be developed including Five (100 word minimum) Annotated Citations. With the exception of the first, these will be based on topics obtained from the Language Development Hypotheses in the list provided at the end.
The First annotated citation will be on the Topic of the “Legal and Ethical Dimensions of the Use of Information.” This information can be obtained from the Internet using a search engine such as Google Scholar. The annotated citation should be in APA format and should include the URL (address) of the of the internet site. The annotation should provide an overview of the discussion and/or list the most critical points.
The second two of these citations will be obtained through Databases of professional books and journals available online through the CSUN Library. For more information on how to find these databases please see the discussion in the Class Requirements Section Online. These citations will be reported in APA format. Included in the annot.

1.1 Definitions: Media vs. Medium & Interpersonal vs. Mass Media
Before we examine and critique the role(s) of media in our social world(s), it is essential to identify and narrow our scope by defining terms; after all, "media" is a term used very loosely in contemporary culture. As Croteau & Hoynes (2019) explain in your textbook , the term "media" is the PLURAL of medium and is derived from medius,which is the Latin term for "middle."
A helpful way to think about these concepts is that mediumsfacilitate communication between (are in the middle of) a sender and receiver; for example, television is a medium that facilitates programming from producers/creators/networks to audiences. Other mediums include radio, print, film, and the internet, and notices that they are both digital and non-digital (print).
The term "media" is the plural of these mediums, but is often used incorrectly; although it doesn't sound like correct grammar, the proper way (within the field of Media Studies) to use "media" in a sentence is "media are" not "media is." When individuals, including politicians, members of non-profits, etc. say "media is" and fail to recognize that the concept of "media" actually encompasses many different mediums with various logics, there is an assumption that all mediums function the same, include the same message, and follow the same regulations and economic structure. For example, when "the media" is blamed for violent action or political outcomes, there is a misunderstanding that needs to be refined; are we talking about film? Television? News media? Are we talking about the digital edition of the news? Are we talking about the Tweets that come from that news organization? In other words, it is important to be specific about mediums when making claims about impact, and when referring to "media" it is important to remember that this is a plural term.
Now, the next step in introductory terminology is to identify which media are "interpersonal" and which mediums are considered "mass" - this course focuses on "mass" media. Some of you may have taken Communications courses that focus more on interpersonal communication, which is one-to-one, includes a single known receiver, and is very interactive (.
Are Social Media Websites Harmful To The Youth?
This study was done to determine if social media websites negatively affect the youth of America. Many young people in the United States have accounts on social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace and studies have shown that these websites can have negative affects. With so many young people using these social media sites, studies on the negative affects should surely be done. After conducting a survey, and analyzing many secondary academic resources I determined that in fact the youth could be negatively affected by these social media websites. They are negatively affected in many different ways such as them being addictive, and distracting in an academic environment, but also can affect the youth negatively in several other ways. After coming to these conclusions, I am certain that more studies need to be done on this issue, so we can reverse some of the negative aspects of social media websites, and find a way to be able to use them in the best possible way.

The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Since that fateful day, there have been a number of disasters around the world; and there have been significant changes in the uses of technology and social media. In this assignment, you will construct a timeline of global events that have happened since 9/11, and analyze the impact technology and social media have had to spread information, photographs, videos, etc. around the world and drive charitable giving. What implications and opportunities do you see in the future for charitable fund development because of technology and, in particular, social media? Your submitted assignment should be 5–7 pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and must follow APA guidelines. You must include references to at least three scholarly resources that are not part of the required readings for this course. Your writing should demonstrate effective communication, using proper spelling and grammar, and be appropriate for a doctoral level learner.
