Writing 101

Basic elements in a sentence -
  Subject, Verb and Object
Learning Objectives

To understand the basic parts of a sentence.

To use and expand them accordingly.
Sentence, the heart of your story

Each sentence carries a complete thought or
    idea.
1)You cannot enter.
2)I like sweets and chocolates.
3)The school is fun and exciting.
4)Let's go swimming.

It's a string of sentences that you build your
stories. In this topic, we discuss the basic parts
    of a sentence.
Parts of a sentence

In any complete sentence, the basic parts are:
1) Subject – the name of a person, place or thing.
2) Verb – the action the subject has taken.
3) Object – what the subject is interacting with. It
can be another person, place or thing.

They are called SVO. Some examples:
1)Mary likes John.
2)He kicks the ball.
3)I am studying in Singapore.
Using Adjectives and Adverbs

Recall that adjectives and adverbs give more
details to your sentences. We can possible
    enhance these sentences:
1)Mary likes John a lot.
2)He kicks the soccer ball.
3)I am studying in beautiful Singapore.

Q: Can you identify which sentence uses
    adjectives and adverbs?
Using Adjectives and Adverbs

Recall again that adjectives and adverbs give
details that are necessary. So you may go
further and use both adj and adv:
1) Little Mary likes John a lot.
2) He kicks the soccer ball hard.
3) I am studying in beautiful Singapore for my
  degree.

Q: Can you see that each sentence has both
adjective and adverb? Which is which?
Learning Activity

With these basic sentences – with SVO –
expand on them with adjectives and adverbs or
    both.
1)My father goes fishing.
2)The school is undergoing renovation.
3)This toy belongs to Alice.
4)We are going to America.

Hint: Think about whether adjective or adverb
or both will give you the details you want.
Learning Activity Answers

Some of the possible answers are:
1)My father goes fishing again.
2)The neighbourhood school is undergoing
  renovation now.
3)This expensive toy belongs to Alice next door.
4)We are going to America next month.
Discussion

What is the basic structure of a sentence?

What do we do with it to make them more
    interesting?
In summary

The basic structure is the SVO – Subject-Verb-
    Object.

We can add adjectives and/or adverbs to give
them the details we want in our sentences to aid
in the reader's imagination of our stories.

  • 9. Discussion  What is the basic structure of a sentence?  What do we do with it to make them more interesting?
  • 10. In summary  The basic structure is the SVO – Subject-Verb- Object.  We can add adjectives and/or adverbs to give them the details we want in our sentences to aid in the reader's imagination of our stories.
