The Community Services Librarian At The Chicopee Public...
This presentation was designed for a public library as part of its outreach initiative. The community services librarian at the Chicopee Public Library
was invited to conduct presentations about public library services for individuals participating in the After Incarceration Support System of the
Hampden County Sheriff's Department.
The After Incarceration Support Systems Program (AISS) is designed to educate, prepare and assist the inmate population with transitioning back into
the community. Key components of the program include 1) Working with the inmate within the correctional center prior to release and 2) Working
with the offender post–release in the community with an emphasis on a continuum of services. The primary goals of AISS are: reduce recidivism,
improve public safety and support the whole person (AISS website, retrieved 7/19/15) The library presentation took place post–release as part of the
community collaboration the AISS. The main feature of the program is its holistic, relational approach to working with the offenders and the largely
voluntary participation of the offenders (Howe, M., Collins, K. & Engel, L., 2006). . The staff in the women's program have remained same since the
start of the program, and staff members perform "inreach" to incarcerated individuals to begin to form relationships (Howe, M., Collins, K. & Engel, L.
2006). Staff members "meet clients where they are," and stay with them through the ups and downs of reentry,

Interview With Children's Librarian
Story Time/Children's' Librarian – Vicki Shaffer
Interview
I observed a Saturday morning story time at the Westport Road Library, there were 8 children and 6 adults present. The children's librarian Jacleyn
received a Master of Library and Information Science from UK. She explained students earning this degree must take 5–8 core classes, then depending
on their interest take the additional courses to fulfill their chosen career path.
When asked what tips Jacleyn had for engaging multicultural children and families she was caught off guard and had trouble answering the question.
When given some time to think she said choosing books that were not "white washed". She feel there is a shortage of books for multicultural families
resulting in the "white washed" statement. For clarity "white washed" refers to books where the featured character is white. ... Show more content on

When reading to a group of children ages birth 4 year olds books with a lot of pictures and little print is ideal. When reading one–on–one choose longer
books with more print as long as they stay engaged in the story. Interestingly she said she would never read Dr. Suess to a group of 2–4 years old she
feels older children 5–7 are better suited for his books.
She believes to engage children in reading the books must be interesting, diverse, with stimulating artwork. Mostly importantly that the reader be
allowed to choose books they are interested in. If they love baseball, let them read as many different types of books with a baseball theme. Making
reading a part of daily routine and being read to will spark a child's love of

The Library Portal As We Know It Today Is Unsustainable
"Put simply, the library portal as we know it today is unsustainable. It, along with a host of other indicators such as declines in reference questions and
shifts from print to e–resources, signals that for academic libraries a 'let's just keep doing business as usual' mentality is a sure path to obsolescence."
(Bell via Tumbleson, p. 974)
The Issue:
The Association of College and Research Libraries' guidelines for the provision of library services to distance learners states that services "must be
equivalent to those provided for students and faculty in traditional campus settings" (ACRL, 2008). With the demographics of students changing to
include increasing amounts of online and distance learners, as well as a more diversified range of ages of students, no one way of instruction or
library interaction is going to assuage every user's expectations within this diverse group. This shift creates the need to re–examine the core services
offered by academic libraries such as information literacy, effective searching strategies and reference help. Libraries can no longer rely on just their
in–person reference and research services. Seal (2008) best defines this shift from 'reference and instruction to learning and engagement' (p. 257). An
emerging solution for this shift is the embedded librarian.
Lewis (2007) among others, presents the embedded librarian as the up and coming model for academic library services when he attempts to outline a
strategy for academic libraries to

The Librarian From The Black Lagoon Analysis
This has brought controversy to many for the fact that on one side books can be full of information and from the other side it can create the wrong
image towards another person. In the kids book "The LIbrarian from the Black Lagoon" written by Mike Thaler a librarian is described as a kid
laminator "they say she laminates you if you talk in the library" (5). or when they say "She also has rubber stamps on the soles of her shoes. And
whenever she steps...it says OVERDUE" (7). A librarian being described this way can infact instill fear into some people and although its just a kid's
book people stay with this image of a librarian. It makes people assume that they are some type of rude person. Another example of stereotypes that
includes librarians is that they are all women who sit around doing nothing more than checking books in and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Many may think this way, however Mona goes on saying that "to be a librarian you need more than just a passion for reading. For example, I have
a completion certificate as a librarian tech. its up to up to librarians to keep up with both book trends as well as technology." As for librarians only
being women, Mona believes that although both men and women can be librarians women do the job better. She continues by comparing teachers
saying that although both men and women can be teacher it doesn't mean they're both good at the job. Not all is correct, however because according
to Lorelle R. Swader writer of the online article Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today "Men in nontraditional professions such as nursing
and librarianship have become easy targets for stereotyping, creating a vicious cycle" (1). A cycle that continues through any carrier or situation that

School Librarians Case Study
One of the new AASL Shared Foundations: Engage (2017) is that librarians "implement organizational policies and practices related to censorship,
materials challenges, library records, and responsible use of information resources" (Shared Foundations Engage sect. para. 4). Subsequently, librarians
demonstrate their leadership capabilities through implementing and disseminating information to their school on guidelines for students' use of digital
tools and library resources. Furthermore, librarians have a critical role in ensuring that their school is complying with the Children's Internet Protection
Act. Moreover, school librarians are also responsible for ensuring that all students have equitable access to diverse materials. Ultimately,... Show more

However, as a school librarian, I also need to create policies that do not restrict students' right to access information from a variety of perspectives.
Safeguarding and promoting students' right to access information on diverse and controversial subjects is also another component of my future policy
for students' use of the Internet. Accordingly, I will need to verify that the blocking software that the school uses is not blocking information
specifically due to its controversial nature such as LGBTQ issues, or contentious political viewpoints. The American Library Association asserts (2012),
"Anything that restricts access to information based on viewpoint or content violates the First Amendment" (p. 23). Consequently, a critical component
of my future role as a school librarian will be verifying that the filtering software and the acceptable use policy of my school are not infringing upon
the students' right to access information from a variety of viewpoints.
The digital divide has a pervasive and negative effect on students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Subsequently, the policies and practices that
I implement in the school library should help alleviate the deleterious effects caused by students' lack of access to digital resources. Furthermore, by
simply extending the hours that the school library is open, I can provide students with greater access to assorted digital resources as well as Internet
access. Equitable

Factors Affecting the Decline in Aging Children
The early teen reading slump has been noted by researchers. Researchers have consistently found that pleasure reading increases throughout
childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to thirteen. Howard, V. (2009). Unfortunately, few researchers have explored the specific
reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves. Even fewer still have explored the role that reading for pleasure plays in the lives
of young teens. Public libraries focus simultaneously on improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key to strategies
to maintain importance and competitive advantage in the "age of Google." (p. 298). One of the most significant barriers in the reading decline is
difficulties selecting appealing reading materials. (p.299). This particular study was collected using focus group questions with 249 completed
surveys out of the 900 sent to junior high school students. There were several factors that effected teen reading and usage of library services. Teens
did not view library staff as a useful source of readers' advisory. Teens describe their lives as very busy, leaving little time to read for pleasure. In this
study, many teens note that they have more homework that elementary school, but also more freedom to socialize. Teens describe their dislike of
assigned reading and their desire to select their own reading materials. This research

Ethical Dilemmas Of The Librarian
CHAPTER 1:
INTRODUCTION
1.0Introduction
A good librarian provides the right information to library user on request and giving the equal service to all. However, many have not considered that
librarians have particular dilemma in handling everyday work, which is ethical dilemma. According to Onoyeyan (2014), ethical dilemma is a situation
where there is a conflict between principles and a choice of action that needs to be determined.
For example, a library user, ask the librarian a question regarding to his/her assignment. In that moment, will the librarian create a teachable moment or
just give the information right away especially when the asker is a student. Thus, the librarian faced ethical dilemma. It is because a librarian must

As new technologies are rapidly introduced, people are able to find any information with the access of internet. This leads to people questioning the
relevance of libraries and its true purpose. Public libraries cultivate the value of increased education and a social unity to advancing as a society.
Libraries encourage reading, spread ideas that ultimately create a social unity. In fact, libraries have been found in the 1730s by Benjamin Franklin.
He believed libraries would be a place to access and share information. (Source A) No matter the changes societies are going through, libraries are still

Moreover, libraries are immensely used by those who have no access to the internet or aren't able to use technology as efficiently. For instance,
there are people out there that need the libraries to access the internet such as Hispanics and the unemployed. According to Source C, Crandall
says, "..having a community resource that is able to help people understand how to use digital technology and information.." With this assistance,
their life is improved to accumulate in the lifestyle societies are already used to. Also, libraries are able to adapt to the changes of societies by
using Microsoft Excel and Ebook, that people can actually interact with. (Source B) Libraries provide a storage for information in all forms as new
technologies are produced. People are encouraged to access to information as effortlessly as others. This may give people the opportunity to find
jobs, explore medical research, and experience new ideas. Not only libraries are relevant for helping those that need guidance but libraries also play a
part in helping the young. For instance, the percentage of people who receive help from a librarian is gradually increasing. Younger groups of 43
percent are getting homework help. Some people may think librarians only know about the storage of books. This is actually not true. For example, not
all young students can access to computers at home, therefore may need help with assignments and projects. Librarians are there to guide these
students to do better and be successful in school. Librarians play a significant role in helping the young, therefore, accomplishing a better for future for

dilemma that these three reference librarians where having. Within this case study there seems to be frustration with the current working conditions,
especially the technological support that is needed. The reference librarians find it challenging to complete their jobs when they have to consistently
assist in computer problems, leaving the reference desk unattended. When the group of librarians approached their director, Joan Cloud, there was
discussion of lack of support to help these librarians. The director, whom jokes a lot, talks of giving the job to someone else, but does not follow

The Importance Of Book Censorship On Books
Even though our world is getting more and more connected, censorship still remains one of the top issues that separate people from reading books.
Books are the spreader of both bad and good knowledge and I believe that we should no longer contain or ban books just because they are offensive
to certain groups in America. The debate on challenged books is a hot topic in America because the country is founded on a basis offreedom of speech.
Many books have been challenged or censored during different places and time periods. For example, the earliest book censorship in America was done
by the Puritans in the 1600s. Seven decades ago, the Nazi Regime censored and modified The Bible in order to create a version that suited their
ideologies. Today, "10 percent of all books" are removed from the public view ("2016 Book"). Nearly "ninety–nine percent" of the books that are
challenged are pulled, or essentially banned, from three locations that need it the most: "the public library, school, and school library" ("2016 Book").
These are the places where people obtain knowledge from and it would be a loss to libraries to have a book removed from their shelves. Right now,
the two largest demographics that support censorship are "parents and patrons" ("2016 Book"). In the past, they have had an upper hand due to
financial backing from patrons, people or organizations that commit to a cause. These supporters believe that censorship must exist to prevent harm
towards readers. On the other

Recreational Reading Decline Factors in Adolescence
Researchers have consistently found that pleasure reading increases throughout childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to thirteen.
Few researchers have explored the specific reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves, and fewer still have explored the role

I Know Why There Are Flowers In the Attic
Over the past forty years, there have been banned books that have been created by some of the most famous authors that we know today including V.C.
Andrews and Maya Angelou. One might wonder why a children's book such as, Winnie the Pooh, could ever be banned? This classic book children
all around the world enjoy, unfortunately can not be enjoyed in the small town of Tuszyn, Poland because Pooh is half dressed and he does not have a
specific gender (Graef). The history of banning books, the process of banning books, and the reasons for banning Flowers on the Attic and I Know

Flowers in the Attic was banned for several reasons; incest between the mother, Corrine and father, Chris, which is Corrine's half uncle. The
sexual intercourse contents between the daughter, Cathy, and the son, Christopher. Many schools and libraries have banned this book for both
those main reasons. Other reasons were because of the little food provided from the grandmother, Olivia. She also locked Cathy, Carrie, Cory, and
Christopher in the attic. "Maybe, maybe even a week, no longer, possibly much less time I just don't know exactly" (Andrews, 41). The mother
promised she would come back, but she left them in the attic for almost four years, and she came sometimes to check on the children, but she was
too caught up in making her dad write her in his will that she no longer cared for her children. The incest between Corrine and Chris caused lashes
on her back from her mother, Olivia. "I stared at the ladder of bloody welts on Momma's back" (Andrews, 76). The grandmother is completely
dedicated to the bible and therefore when the grandmother figured out what the mother had done, she showed the children what she would do if they
did the same as their sinful mother. After the children were petrified of the grandmother, they tried to do all that she requested and obey all her rules.

Pros And Cons Of Banning Books
Warning! Some May Consider this Paper Dangerous
What do The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Fahrenheit 451 all have in common? These highly popular books have all been banned
from libraries in the United States. Libraries and schools in different states are banning books that are considered "inappropriate" to students for a
variety of reasons. The main reason that teachers and librarians ban books is to protect students from facing challenged or difficult ideas. Some people
believe that banning books is a good thing and helps the students, while other individuals believe book banning is a bad idea and this action has a
negative effect on a society. Book banning is unacceptable because librarians and teachers ban books for their content, and not for their effect on
students.
According to the other of "Banned and Challenged Books", every year librarians take manners into their own hands and report hundreds of books
containing inappropriate content in hope of banning them from school and public libraries, as well as school curriculums. When libraries and schools
attempt to remove or restrict a book from the curriculum or library based upon the objections of a person's point of view, the book is considered a
challenged book. A book is only considered banned once it has been completely removed from its previous location. Librarians are motivated to
challenge material with the desire to protect children from inappropriate sexual content, offensive language, or other

Information and Knowledge
Information literacy and the associated skills are a well–known commodity in a school librarian's world. Information specialists are charged with
various methods, processes, and means to guide students in their information seeking strategies. One the leading methods commonly practiced is
Guided Inquiry where students learn a step–by–step procedure to determine, locate, use, and digest information needed to answer an inquiry and/or
complete a task (Kuhlthau, Maniotes, & Caspari, 2007). Hamilton (2009), reports that education is now comprised of multiple literacies causing a shift
towards inquiry–based learning. Due to the transformation based on digital, visual, technological, and textual advancements, school librarians are
essential in students obtaining a foundation for information literacy.

Age Restrictions And Opening Doors
By the 1890s public libraries were eliminating age restrictions and opening their doors to children. They shelved collections of children's books in
closed stacks with the adult books, or in open shelving within adult reading rooms. Eventually, children in the adult reading room created a nuisance for
the adult patrons. At Denver Public Library John Cotton Dana remarked, "for the comfort of the elder reader it is certainly desirable that children
not come in large numbers into the part of the library in which the public is given access to the shelves" (Kimball, 2014, p. 491). As a solution,
libraries began to house their children's collections in separate children's room away from the adults. The term "children's room" appears in library
professional literature in 1890 (McDowell, 2014, p. 523). That same year, the first children's room was opened in Brookline, M.A. under the
supervision of the library's janitor (Sayers, 1963, p. 9–10). In 1896, Lutie Stearns published her "Report on Reading for the Young," a survey of
children's work in 195 libraries in the U.S. and Canada, and found that between в…• and ВЅ of the membership of responding libraries were children
under sixteen, but only a handful had a separate children's room (p. 82–85).

The libraries of Los Angeles are divided up according to region. Venice Beach Library is part of the West Branches, which are managed by the West
LA Library Branch Manager. This manager receives orders and guidelines to follow from the head office. Next in the line of command, is the head
librarian. The head librarian is responsible to the West Branch manager. Within the library itself and helping the head librarian, are four other
librarians. Each librarian is in charge of ordering and locating books, outreach programs and reading circles. Underneath them are the clerks. The
clerks are assigned to a particular librarian to take care of daily tasks such as counting the cash, checking return boxes and deliveries, and reshelving
books. Finally, the lowest in the task force are the messenger clerks, who are part time employees who also work with particular librarians. Each
position is assigned specific tasks and assignments. The workplace is best represented by the New Workplace, which offers flatter, more diverse and
team centralized management. In terms of management, the head librarian serves as a better leader by facilitating self–management with better and
more open communication lines. The communication is two sided and the head librarian when delegating tasks is very responsive and provides an
open environment where questioned are welcomed. There is also strong team association built into the structure.

The final stakeholder could be students who attend college now. The students now want the same thing as the students back then, to get good grades

required by the teacher. Students today would say that Google is a reliable source and that it is easier to use than databases. Current students have more
available options than the other stakeholders because they are a part of the new generation. Like the other stakeholders, students still use the library
even with the technology changing. Jenny Platt is currently attending CSU and is in the class of 2015. She doesn't go to the library but if she did she
said she would get on her computer and go to google to start her research. She said she does not check books out from the library because the internet

"Hello there, bitch," the librarian's voice echoes through an indistinct dark chamber. The man struggles against cold metallic restraints on a frigid
metal table on which he now lies, "Are you comfortable, right now? I doubt it." The man's head is throbbing as if his heart had crawled into his
skull then pulsed manically just under the skin of his temple. "Your wrists and ankles are chained, a ball gag in your mouth, you're disoriented and
scared, I imagine, wondering how you got here," the familiar woman's voice intones softly. The man struggles to recall how he got here, any sign
or landmark that might indicate where he is, how he could get free, anything, at all. He thinks about his last memories. The man felt twinges of
nervousness as the librarian sat next to him in the back seat of the Uber car she'd ordered. "So, uh, where are we going?" the man asked with
flickers of excitement and unease. "You'll see," the librarian replied as she stared at the blur of city lights that passed by her passenger window.
The Uber driver stoically veered the car up the ramp that led from the FDR to the Brooklyn Bridge then merged with traffic crossing the expanse
over the East River. Then nothing. The dull glow of a video screen now flitters in the infinite darkness above the man's head. He strains to move his
head against the restraints to see the video. "I am going to tell you in detail why you've been kidnapped, what's going to happen to you, and how long
you'll be here,"

Personal Librarian Interview
For this project, I interviewed Dr. Sonya Gaither, director of the Hightower Library at Gordon State College in Barnesville, Georgia. The challenge Dr.
Gaither wanted to focus on was changing procedures within the library that have not been updated in years, specifically how the librarians on her staff
conduct appointments with students seeking research assistance through the Personal Librarian Program.
Currently, the librarian conducting the appointment does the bulk of the work, while the student participates very little. As a result, students do not learn
evaluation skills or research techniques, and librarians are kept busy for thirty minutes to an hour as they identify specific sources for students. This,
consequentially, leads to crowds of students, who have made appointments or walked in with a question, waiting to work with the librarian. When
asked how these appointments would ideally be handled, Dr. Gaither said that they should be between fifteen and thirty minutes and that the student
should be the one in front of the computer while the librarian shows them how to find sources relevant to their topic, but does not actually ... Show more

Personal Librarian appointments are most popular with freshmen and sophomores, though some professors require students to make an appointment for
each research paper they turn in during the semester which puts appointment slots in high demand. The library staff is comprised of Dr. Gaither, two
part–time assistants, and four full time librarians, all four of whom are conducting the appointments in the same manner. When asked why they allowed
students to sit idly as they did all of the work in PLP sessions, one librarian claimed that that was how a previous director instructed the librarians to
conduct appointments, saying that the goal was to get students in and out quickly by simply giving them what they

The Role Of Community Engagement And Outreach Librarians
A major challenge in public librarianship and especially in the role of the community engagement or outreach librarian is relating to the populations
you are trying to engage. Marissa Gehrke has a goal of bringing in more Spanish speakers into the library. However, not being a native Spanish
speaker has proved difficult in reaching those communities, even though she has some level of Spanish speaking ability (personal communication,
September 30, 2017). According to the ALA, 78% of libraries report that Spanish is the number one language to which they develop services for
(2008). Although the ALA has put significant effort in recruiting racially and ethnically diverse libraries into the profession, the efforts have yet to

Zimdars had to rely on volunteers to help her implement a summer program at the local elementary school. This proved to be very difficult because
she was working with varying schedules and people who don't have a financial incentive to be there. As wonderful as volunteers can be, it can also
make programs more stressful for the librarians. Zimdars has since secured some grant funding to hire temporary employees for the summer to help
with the program next summer (personal communication October 10, 2017). Another challenge of a community–led librarian is that they needn't
necessarily lbe professional librarians. (Stevenson & Domsy, 2016), Zimdars mentioned that oftentimes her role as outreach librarian looks more like
a social worker (personal communication, October 10, 2017). Stevenson & Domsy also note "an ability to penetrate communities and work closely
with vulnerable groups takes precedence over professional qualifications. This opens the door for the hiring of social workers and other professionals
(or paraprofessionals) over librarians" (2016). As community needs change, the culture, roles, and skills of the librarian also changes. Several graduate
students had expressed apprehension about the direction libraries are moving towards in the way of community engagement and outreach (Hawkins,
October 7, 2017). This trend may deter certain

Essay on Information Literacy and the Public Library
The American Association for School Libraries defines information literacy as the ability to use many types of reference resources and literacies to find
information. The different types of reference resources and literacies include: digital, visual, textual, and technological literacies. The American
Association for School Libraries has four main learning standards. The first covers inquiry, thinking critically, and gaining knowledge. The second
standard includes drawing conclusions, making informal decisions, applying knowledge to new situations, and creating new knowledge. The third
standard asks students to be able to share knowledge and participate ethically. It also requires them to be productive as members of our democratic

"There is evidence of a wide range of information literacy focused programs in public libraries worldwide" (Harding, p. 157). Indeed, libraries across
the United States are finding ways to provide their communities with the necessary information literacy programs. Harding (2008) points out that these
library programs are "providing information literacy support", and "they have the opportunity to foster the lifelong learning of their communities" (p.
157). The public library has great strengths when it comes to providing information literacy programming. Public libraries have been considered the
place to go for continuing education for an extremely long time. Public libraries reach a large range of people on a daily basis. Harding (2008)
points out that the library "has a wide diversity of clientele and the potential to reach all sections of the community from children to older adults, and
across minority groups and educational and professional levels." (p. 159) For many children, a public library is their first experience with learning in a
group environment. Oftentimes, community members are loyal to one library and this allows librarians to foster long lasting relationships with them.
Harding (2008) also suggests that "public libraries have the opportunity to provide one on one instruction during client–librarian interactions such as
reference interviews" (p. 160).This one on one instruction is another way

A Library : My Home As A Library
In most towns or cities, you will find a library; whether it contains "old–school features", including a card catalogue, a historian, and an old librarian
shushing you for talking too loud, or it features modern aspects, like usable iPads, eBooks, and lots of noise being made. The local library in my town
became my home as a child.
I enjoyed reading many books throughout my childhood, and there is no better place to read a book than a library, which had become my favourite
hobby. The book's release an exquisite ambiance, and I found it very comfortable and cozy. At home, I lived in poverty, in government housing, and
without any father figure in my family, but at the library, I could pretend none of that was actually happening, and I could lose myself in a book. I
soon spent so much time at the library as a child that I spent almost more time there than at my own house, which eventually led me to meet the
library director, Rachel Campbell. I found Rachel friendly, helpful, and little did I know, she would one day become my best friend, despite the
nineteen year age gap between us.
Once I grew to be around twelve years old, I would go into Rachel's office and discuss books with her, as nobody else really ever read the same
books that I did. Eventually, our discussions became not just about books, but about our lives. I learned that Rachel came from the same situation as
me, yet she had worked her way through the ranks to get a degree in Library Science. Relief washed over

Why I Am A University Library
Until recently, I had no idea that there was a such thing as a Young Adult Librarian. I had assumed that teaching would be the only job that would
allow me to talk about books and share my love of books with young adults; but then, one day I happened to stumble upon a blog ran by someone who
was sharing her experience as a Young AdultLibrarian and I knew instantly that I had found what I wanted to do with my life. At this point, I started
looking around for ways to be involved with my university library, just so I could have a taste of what it was like to work in a library setting. Since it is
a university library, I knew that my opportunity to deal with anything young adult would be pretty much non–existent, so I decided to just use the
opportunity to learn whatever I possibly could about librarianship. I spent the semester working with Collection Management and the Interlibrary
Loan office and I learned a little about the inner workings of those two areas, and a little about what it meant to be a librarian. I still have my heart
set on being a Young Adult Librarian in the end, and I know without a doubt that a career as a librarian is right for me.
It is important to realize that being a young adult can be difficult, there are so many new experiences and responsibilities that come with those years
and it can be overwhelming for many. I want to become a Young Adult Librarian so I can not only be in a position to, but also know how to best help
young adults navigate

I've been volunteering at the Triton College Library since my first semester at Triton. I've learned several things, both personally and practically.
I actually have past experience in volunteering at libraries. I used to volunteer at my high school's library for 3 years. Because of that I had learned the
Dewey Decimal system along with laminating and helping students with requests. Those skills really came in handy during my time volunteering. I
have considered pursuing library studies to become a librarian, but ultimately decided it wasn't for me. Nonetheless, I still enjoy volunteering ... Show

Although I didn't keep any because I didn't want to hoard books like I had in high school, I skimmed through some of them and it's amazing to think
that these books had transcended tens of years. It made me wonder just how many people had held and read the book like I was at that moment,
possible before I was even born.
The staff at the library are very kind and supporting. They were always willing to help me when I needed it. They even offered me snacks and
even planned a small goodbye party in their break room with cupcakes and flowers they had bought for me. I was touched and very grateful that they
had planned and gone through the effort to plan a party for me when I had only been with them a semester. I learned more about them personally this
semester compared to last semester. They still say hi to me occasionally when I go to the library and usually ask how I am.
While I was helping out at the library, I realized just how many resources we have available to us students. I also noticed that most students didn't
even know about them, much less how to access them. We had numerous events such as a computer coding workshop (for people of all ages) which
I would have gone to if it wasn't for it being during one of my classes. I was also surprised to find that many of the librarians went to the events. One
resource for example, is the online librarian chat where you can ask for help in finding sources, which was especially helpful

Schools Need 21st Century Materials And Resources
Schools need 21st century materials and resources to serve 21st century students. There needs to be a change in ideology regarding the function of the
library in todays society. "For centuries, libraries have remained essentially separate, even competing with one another to establish and maintain the
greatest collection, and now they need to recast themselves as platforms rather than storehouses. (Palfrey, 2015) With the introduction of the internet
and online information libraries need to rebrand themselves. Libraries around the world can now share information with one another in real time, and
the competition for resources has ended. That said, there is still value in networking with other agencies devoted to education and information. John
Palfrey, author of Biblio Tech suggests that, "Libraries must act as ambitiously networked institutions, connecting their network effectively with partner
intuitions: archives, historical societies, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations."(2015) More agencies are partnering up to give their
patrons access to the best and most credible information.

Negative Consequences Of Banning Books
Banning is the action of prohibiting something usually from the public eye. People have typically banned books due to them finding something
offensive in the content. Some people say this is an infringement on our first amendment rights. Others believe that only parents should a say in what
their children can read and only their children, not anybody else's. Better thesis?
Banning and challenging books are two different things. A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a
person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/22

expecting some backlash. He got none. He received glowing reviews from librarians and magazines, but the

Problems of communication in the library are inherent. To avoid disruption in smooth library administration due to communication breakdown,
department heads should maintain informal and formal contact regularly with the staff to ensure they are well informed of all activities occurring

Furthermore, staff training is crucial to the proper administration of daily library tasks. Administrative support is crucial for training to be effective;
providing workshops for professional librarians and giving them time to attend training is critical. Administrators must understand the importance of
training should develop staff policies that demonstrate a commitment towards staff development. Most staff want training because it increases their

There is more than one type of librarian and they play many roles this day and age. They were once thought of as being the keeper of knowledge and
were the go to persons for any and everything. Some specialize in areas of interest such as cataloging, allocation, archives, and even special collections.
While others, depending on what type of library they work in conduct all of the above job functions and more. With the advancement of technology and

263). How much technology should a librarian be able to understand and implement in their daily duties? Is learning the basics of technology enough
or should librarians have extensive training and knowledge in the advancement of technology as well as becoming involved with its ever increasing
span? These are just a few of the examples of what is being sought after from librarians when being considered for positions. A librarian should have a
holistic approach to working within the field and become forever students of learning the newest technology. This, in fact, will allow them to become
more marketable when seeking employment in various venues of the library world.
Training and Education
Whether it is a public librarian, academic librarian, a law librarian, a librarian working in the business field, or a medical librarian, it is the norm for
librarians to understand the dynamics of technology. Not only are librarians required to have knowledge of the newest technology, they are also
being required to be able to use it. Sometimes there is a gap in what is being taught to future librarians in their school programs and what is being
required of them within the job sector. In order to sustain as a competitor within the workforce, librarians need to be prepared to reach beyond the

Green Libraries are more than just Buildings
In this review I have discussed Aulisio's article that is "Green libraries are more than just a buildings". Aulisio (2013) is an assistant professor in the
Weinberg Memorial Library. He is the Evening Supervisor and Public Service Librarian. Author earned his BA from Bloomsburg University, his MS
from Drexel and his MLA from the University of Pennsylvania. In this article, the author argues that a green library is something more than just the
architecture. I agree with the author in the context of definition in which the author said that green library as any library that promotes sustainability
through education, operation and outreach.
There few major issues presented by the author. That is the importance of learning about sustainability, incorporating sustainability into librarianship,
library as a teaching tool and also sustainable operations and outreach. The first of this is the importance of learning about sustainability. The author
come out with his own statement that sound he posit that a true green library is one that promotes sustainability by leading by example and attempts to
incorporate sustainability into all aspects of academic librarianship. By engaging in these activities, librarians can support an ethical and academic
mission of working within a sustainable lifestyle that will fully envelope their campus and beyond. According to United Nation (1987), Sustainability
can be referring as meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the

The Importance Of Community Ligagement And Outreach...
Community engagement and outreach librarians are a relatively new and growing speciality in public librarianship. The idea of outreach is not a new
concept for libraries. The Offices for Literacy and Outreach Services was established in the 1970s, formerly the Office for Literacy Services to the
Disadvantaged (McCook, 2011). While community engagement and outreach can have different connotations, for the purposes of this paper, they are
going to be used interchangeably, as the duties and responsibilities for each type of librarian does not vary much in job postings. The ALA describes
outreach librarians as providers of "equitable delivery of library services to all people through the development of programs, policies, practices, and
behaviors which make the library available to all people" (ALA, n.d.–c). Many libraries are just hiring their first community engagement and outreach
librarians, such as The Verona Public Library (Newton, 2017). Community engagement and outreach librarians seek ways in which to develop deep
connections with the community organizations and residents while being the face of the library. This staffing "trend" moves libraries away from their
desks and out into the community to reach community members where they are (Stevenson & Domsy, 2016).
Scope and Tasks A big question in outreach is should the goal be focused on bringing people into the library or bringing library services out into the
community (M. Gehrke, personal communication, September

you go. These things were developed due to greater inventions and creativity of their designers. But on the other hand, there are still places or
institutions that have a slow growth of development when it comes to advancement of technology. And one of these that caught the proponent's

The Library For Books And Reading Were Prevalent
After multiple visits to the library to observe and interview, underlying themes of love for books and reading were prevalent. When interviewing my
librarian informant many times she said she loved to read and loved books. The job of a librarian suited her perfectly. While on tour with her, I notice
the care other employees took while handling books as well, they would sort them gently and with gloved hands re–shelve them carefully as if handling
a glass vase. When asked what they did after hours or for fun, a few stated they just read. I have my focus group scheduled for this week and most
likely will get similar responses. Also the theme of the modern library relying heavily on technology was reoccurring. From automated book check
outs to security tags, to librarians running computerized queries to find a book's statistics: frequency of check out, popularity and if it should still be
offered at the library. The librarians use computers and technology in almost all the request they get to assist patrons. From when a book is out, to
when something new will be available, to when a book should be back in the library or if it is available online.
I will need to collect some follow up data and the data provided from the focus group should solidify most of my findings. I would also like to see if all
focus group members have the same respect for books and reading or if I can pick up that this is only a job/paycheck for them. I just finished the
process of transcribing

The Job Requirements And Importance Of Librarians
The job requirements and importance of librarians
The whole point to the human race is to reproduce and to become civilized is the ultimate human goal. Libraries are needed in our society as a quiet
place to study and learn the knowledge needed to succeed in the future. Libraries are the structure of our society, they are the home to countless
books and even more knowledge. Some may say that libraries and, therefore librarians, aren 't needed because children do most of their learning in
schools instead of in libraries. Which is a valid point but most english classes ask students to visit libraries in order to read books that are needed for

Librarians are actually quite qualified to teach classes and handle the responsibilities that teachers usually handle. Most librarians need a Master 's
Degree in Library Science (MLS), generally from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) is required for mostlibrarian jobs

university or a top administration position in a college or university library, and some librarians have an additional degree in the area in which they
specialize. Most states require that librarians working in local libraries are certified, most certification for school librarians (also called school media

The Librarian
The librarian begins to mercilessly ride atop the man, harder, faster, groaning and gasping and leaving little pink rivers of claw marks all over his
chest. The man can't remember the last time he came for any reason. It was making himself cum thinking about this moment, he knew, before he met
this insane woman, before he threw his life away for some jerk off fantasy.
Now he felt the rhythmic motion of her pussy wrapped tightly around his cock, the up and down, the slippery warm movement, her breathing, and the
man could only close his eyes and pray for some escape from this place, from this moment, from her.
"No, no, no, no," she gasps, "you don't get away that easily, pet," she whispers, "Cum for me, cum inside me, feel my perfect pussy, remember how I
taste," she says.
The man's entire body tenses up. He hates himself. He wants to scream, "Fuck you," but his fear stops him. He's too afraid of the things he saw on that
first night. He's too helpless. He's her prisoner.
Instead, he feels his cock swell with her every methodical undulation, with her every warm, tight stroke of her pussy on his dick. He grits his teeth, he
tries to imagine baseball statistics, or stock quotes, or the last morning's headline.
His cock begins to spurt then spasm uncontrollably. The librarian smiles and bites her lip. He can feel her pussy throbbing and squeezing his shaft
rhythmically, the librarian's body tenses, her fingernails cut deeply into the flesh of the man's chest.

Issues in Academic Library: Essential Skills of...
1.0 Introduction An academic library is a library where it is to be found in an academic institution. As stated by Burke and Miller (1993), "the
information world has expanded dramatically over the last decade due mainly to developments in communication. Information technology
developments have resulted in new methods of communications whilst the latest telecommunications systems have altered the speed of
communications. Both of these major changes have affected the way in which information is handled, stored and exchanged across the world."
Therefore, an academic library acts as a source of information where the users within the institution have the access to dig in information and look for
guidance from the librarians. It is also known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kakabadse and Korac–Kakabadse (2000) stated that "in order to meet the corporate needs of the future, organisations require professionals with a
combination of IS/IT knowledge, management skills, leadership experience and high motivation." They also mentioned that "as can be seen, the nature
of the leadership role is broad, spanning such breadth, and becoming accomplished at leadership really means that leadership is more learnt through
experience, nurturing and enhancing the use of particular personal qualities such as maturity, robustness, wisdom, street skills, unorthodox decision
making and personal discipline. In contrast, managerial competencies and operational skills can be taught within a classroom setting, whereas
leadership capabilities are often best developed on the job, aided by mentoring, counselling and intensive feedback on personal and team performance."

The Community Services Librarian At The Chicopee Public...

  • 1. The Community Services Librarian At The Chicopee Public... This presentation was designed for a public library as part of its outreach initiative. The community services librarian at the Chicopee Public Library was invited to conduct presentations about public library services for individuals participating in the After Incarceration Support System of the Hampden County Sheriff's Department. The After Incarceration Support Systems Program (AISS) is designed to educate, prepare and assist the inmate population with transitioning back into the community. Key components of the program include 1) Working with the inmate within the correctional center prior to release and 2) Working with the offender post–release in the community with an emphasis on a continuum of services. The primary goals of AISS are: reduce recidivism, improve public safety and support the whole person (AISS website, retrieved 7/19/15) The library presentation took place post–release as part of the community collaboration the AISS. The main feature of the program is its holistic, relational approach to working with the offenders and the largely voluntary participation of the offenders (Howe, M., Collins, K. & Engel, L., 2006). . The staff in the women's program have remained same since the start of the program, and staff members perform "inreach" to incarcerated individuals to begin to form relationships (Howe, M., Collins, K. & Engel, L. 2006). Staff members "meet clients where they are," and stay with them through the ups and downs of reentry, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Interview With Children's Librarian Story Time/Children's' Librarian – Vicki Shaffer Interview I observed a Saturday morning story time at the Westport Road Library, there were 8 children and 6 adults present. The children's librarian Jacleyn received a Master of Library and Information Science from UK. She explained students earning this degree must take 5–8 core classes, then depending on their interest take the additional courses to fulfill their chosen career path. When asked what tips Jacleyn had for engaging multicultural children and families she was caught off guard and had trouble answering the question. When given some time to think she said choosing books that were not "white washed". She feel there is a shortage of books for multicultural families resulting in the "white washed" statement. For clarity "white washed" refers to books where the featured character is white. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When reading to a group of children ages birth 4 year olds books with a lot of pictures and little print is ideal. When reading one–on–one choose longer books with more print as long as they stay engaged in the story. Interestingly she said she would never read Dr. Suess to a group of 2–4 years old she feels older children 5–7 are better suited for his books. She believes to engage children in reading the books must be interesting, diverse, with stimulating artwork. Mostly importantly that the reader be allowed to choose books they are interested in. If they love baseball, let them read as many different types of books with a baseball theme. Making reading a part of daily routine and being read to will spark a child's love of ... • 3. The Library Portal As We Know It Today Is Unsustainable "Put simply, the library portal as we know it today is unsustainable. It, along with a host of other indicators such as declines in reference questions and shifts from print to e–resources, signals that for academic libraries a 'let's just keep doing business as usual' mentality is a sure path to obsolescence." (Bell via Tumbleson, p. 974) The Issue: The Association of College and Research Libraries' guidelines for the provision of library services to distance learners states that services "must be equivalent to those provided for students and faculty in traditional campus settings" (ACRL, 2008). With the demographics of students changing to include increasing amounts of online and distance learners, as well as a more diversified range of ages of students, no one way of instruction or library interaction is going to assuage every user's expectations within this diverse group. This shift creates the need to re–examine the core services offered by academic libraries such as information literacy, effective searching strategies and reference help. Libraries can no longer rely on just their in–person reference and research services. Seal (2008) best defines this shift from 'reference and instruction to learning and engagement' (p. 257). An emerging solution for this shift is the embedded librarian. Lewis (2007) among others, presents the embedded librarian as the up and coming model for academic library services when he attempts to outline a strategy for academic libraries to ... • 4. The Librarian From The Black Lagoon Analysis This has brought controversy to many for the fact that on one side books can be full of information and from the other side it can create the wrong image towards another person. In the kids book "The LIbrarian from the Black Lagoon" written by Mike Thaler a librarian is described as a kid laminator "they say she laminates you if you talk in the library" (5). or when they say "She also has rubber stamps on the soles of her shoes. And whenever she steps...it says OVERDUE" (7). A librarian being described this way can infact instill fear into some people and although its just a kid's book people stay with this image of a librarian. It makes people assume that they are some type of rude person. Another example of stereotypes that includes librarians is that they are all women who sit around doing nothing more than checking books in and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many may think this way, however Mona goes on saying that "to be a librarian you need more than just a passion for reading. For example, I have a completion certificate as a librarian tech. its up to up to librarians to keep up with both book trends as well as technology." As for librarians only being women, Mona believes that although both men and women can be librarians women do the job better. She continues by comparing teachers saying that although both men and women can be teacher it doesn't mean they're both good at the job. Not all is correct, however because according to Lorelle R. Swader writer of the online article Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today "Men in nontraditional professions such as nursing and librarianship have become easy targets for stereotyping, creating a vicious cycle" (1). • 5. School Librarians Case Study One of the new AASL Shared Foundations: Engage (2017) is that librarians "implement organizational policies and practices related to censorship, materials challenges, library records, and responsible use of information resources" (Shared Foundations Engage sect. para. 4). Subsequently, librarians demonstrate their leadership capabilities through implementing and disseminating information to their school on guidelines for students' use of digital tools and library resources. Furthermore, librarians have a critical role in ensuring that their school is complying with the Children's Internet Protection Act. Moreover, school librarians are also responsible for ensuring that all students have equitable access to diverse materials. Ultimately,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, as a school librarian, I also need to create policies that do not restrict students' right to access information from a variety of perspectives. Safeguarding and promoting students' right to access information on diverse and controversial subjects is also another component of my future policy for students' use of the Internet. Accordingly, I will need to verify that the blocking software that the school uses is not blocking information specifically due to its controversial nature such as LGBTQ issues, or contentious political viewpoints. The American Library Association asserts (2012), "Anything that restricts access to information based on viewpoint or content violates the First Amendment" (p. 23). Consequently, a critical component of my future role as a school librarian will be verifying that the filtering software and the acceptable use policy of my school are not infringing upon the students' right to access information from a variety of viewpoints. The digital divide has a pervasive and negative effect on students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Subsequently, the policies and practices that I implement in the school library should help alleviate the deleterious effects caused by students' lack of access to digital resources. Furthermore, by simply extending the hours that the school library is open, I can provide students with greater access to assorted digital resources as well as Internet access. Equitable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Factors Affecting the Decline in Aging Children The early teen reading slump has been noted by researchers. Researchers have consistently found that pleasure reading increases throughout childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to thirteen. Howard, V. (2009). Unfortunately, few researchers have explored the specific reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves. Even fewer still have explored the role that reading for pleasure plays in the lives of young teens. Public libraries focus simultaneously on improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key to strategies to maintain importance and competitive advantage in the "age of Google." (p. 298). One of the most significant barriers in the reading decline is difficulties selecting appealing reading materials. (p.299). This particular study was collected using focus group questions with 249 completed surveys out of the 900 sent to junior high school students. There were several factors that effected teen reading and usage of library services. Teens did not view library staff as a useful source of readers' advisory. Teens describe their lives as very busy, leaving little time to read for pleasure. In this study, many teens note that they have more homework that elementary school, but also more freedom to socialize. Teens describe their dislike of assigned reading and their desire to select their own reading materials. This research ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, many have not considered that librarians have particular dilemma in handling everyday work, which is ethical dilemma. According to Onoyeyan (2014), ethical dilemma is a situation where there is a conflict between principles and a choice of action that needs to be determined. For example, a library user, ask the librarian a question regarding to his/her assignment. In that moment, will the librarian create a teachable moment or just give the information right away especially when the asker is a student. Thus, the librarian faced ethical dilemma. This leads to people questioning the relevance of libraries and its true purpose. Public libraries cultivate the value of increased education and a social unity to advancing as a society. Libraries encourage reading, spread ideas that ultimately create a social unity. In fact, libraries have been found in the 1730s by Benjamin Franklin. He believed libraries would be a place to access and share information. (Source A) No matter the changes societies are going through, libraries are still developing. This simply gives the hope that even our future would hold libraries to serve a role in education. Libraries also stimulate reading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, libraries are immensely used by those who have no access to the internet or aren't able to use technology as efficiently. For instance, there are people out there that need the libraries to access the internet such as Hispanics and the unemployed. According to Source C, Crandall says, "..having a community resource that is able to help people understand how to use digital technology and information.." With this assistance, their life is improved to accumulate in the lifestyle societies are already used to. Also, libraries are able to adapt to the changes of societies by using Microsoft Excel and Ebook, that people can actually interact with. (Source B) Libraries provide a storage for information in all forms as new technologies are produced. People are encouraged to access to information as effortlessly as others. This may give people the opportunity to find jobs, explore medical research, and experience new ideas. Not only libraries are relevant for helping those that need guidance but libraries also play a part in helping the young. For instance, the percentage of people who receive help from a librarian is gradually increasing. Younger groups of 43 percent are getting homework help. Some people may think librarians only know about the storage of books. This is actually not true. For example, not all young students can access to computers at home, therefore may need help with assignments and projects. • 12. The Importance Of Book Censorship On Books Even though our world is getting more and more connected, censorship still remains one of the top issues that separate people from reading books. Books are the spreader of both bad and good knowledge and I believe that we should no longer contain or ban books just because they are offensive to certain groups in America. The debate on challenged books is a hot topic in America because the country is founded on a basis offreedom of speech. Many books have been challenged or censored during different places and time periods. For example, the earliest book censorship in America was done by the Puritans in the 1600s. Seven decades ago, the Nazi Regime censored and modified The Bible in order to create a version that suited their ideologies. Today, "10 percent of all books" are removed from the public view ("2016 Book"). Nearly "ninety–nine percent" of the books that are challenged are pulled, or essentially banned, from three locations that need it the most: "the public library, school, and school library" ("2016 Book"). These are the places where people obtain knowledge from and it would be a loss to libraries to have a book removed from their shelves. Right now, the two largest demographics that support censorship are "parents and patrons" ("2016 Book"). In the past, they have had an upper hand due to financial backing from patrons, people or organizations that commit to a cause. These supporters believe that censorship must exist to prevent harm towards readers. On the other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The research question "what impact can librarians and libraries have on the decline in older children and teen recreational reading" can be broken down to discuss several subtopics. This literature review examines peer–reviewed material to provide a basis for the research questions discussed within this study. The review of the literature is divided into four subtopics that were studied using different theories and approaches in an effort to answer the research question. In an effort to address what librarians and libraries can do to have an impact on recreational reading amongst adolescents, literature was reviewed pertaining to several subjects. The subtopic literature that was analyzed addresses reading decline factors between the ages of ten through seventeen, what motives this age group, outreach and library programs, and the impact of recreational reading. Recreational Reading Decline Factors in Adolescence Researchers have consistently found that pleasure reading increases throughout childhood and begins to decline, usually at age twelve to thirteen. Few researchers have explored the specific reasons for this decline from the perspective of teens themselves, and fewer still have explored the role that reading for pleasure plays in the lives of young teens. Our understanding of teen pleasure reading sums greater importance as public libraries focus simultaneously on improving services to teen patrons and to pleasure readers of all ages as key to strategies to ... Banning Book Research Paper Madyson Pierce and Mckenzie Everhart Ms. Sutor English II December 16, 2015 I Know Why There Are Flowers In the Attic Over the past forty years, there have been banned books that have been created by some of the most famous authors that we know today including V.C. Andrews and Maya Angelou. One might wonder why a children's book such as, Winnie the Pooh, could ever be banned? This classic book children all around the world enjoy, unfortunately can not be enjoyed in the small town of Tuszyn, Poland because Pooh is half dressed and he does not have a specific gender (Graef). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Flowers in the Attic was banned for several reasons; incest between the mother, Corrine and father, Chris, which is Corrine's half uncle. The sexual intercourse contents between the daughter, Cathy, and the son, Christopher. Many schools and libraries have banned this book for both those main reasons. Other reasons were because of the little food provided from the grandmother, Olivia. She also locked Cathy, Carrie, Cory, and Christopher in the attic. "Maybe, maybe even a week, no longer, possibly much less time I just don't know exactly" (Andrews, 41). The mother promised she would come back, but she left them in the attic for almost four years, and she came sometimes to check on the children, but she was too caught up in making her dad write her in his will that she no longer cared for her children. The incest between Corrine and Chris caused lashes on her back from her mother, Olivia. "I stared at the ladder of bloody welts on Momma's back" (Andrews, 76). The grandmother is completely dedicated to the bible and therefore when the grandmother figured out what the mother had done, she showed the children what she would do if they did the same as their sinful mother. After the children were petrified of the grandmother, they tried to do all that she requested and obey all her rules. • 15. Pros And Cons Of Banning Books Warning! Some May Consider this Paper Dangerous What do The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Fahrenheit 451 all have in common? These highly popular books have all been banned from libraries in the United States. Libraries and schools in different states are banning books that are considered "inappropriate" to students for a variety of reasons. The main reason that teachers and librarians ban books is to protect students from facing challenged or difficult ideas. Some people believe that banning books is a good thing and helps the students, while other individuals believe book banning is a bad idea and this action has a negative effect on a society. Book banning is unacceptable because librarians and teachers ban books for their content, and not for their effect on students. According to the other of "Banned and Challenged Books", every year librarians take manners into their own hands and report hundreds of books containing inappropriate content in hope of banning them from school and public libraries, as well as school curriculums. When libraries and schools attempt to remove or restrict a book from the curriculum or library based upon the objections of a person's point of view, the book is considered a challenged book. A book is only considered banned once it has been completely removed from its previous location. • 20. Age Restrictions And Opening Doors By the 1890s public libraries were eliminating age restrictions and opening their doors to children. They shelved collections of children's books in closed stacks with the adult books, or in open shelving within adult reading rooms. Eventually, children in the adult reading room created a nuisance for the adult patrons. At Denver Public Library John Cotton Dana remarked, "for the comfort of the elder reader it is certainly desirable that children not come in large numbers into the part of the library in which the public is given access to the shelves" (Kimball, 2014, p. 491). As a solution, libraries began to house their children's collections in separate children's room away from the adults. The term "children's room" appears in library professional literature in 1890 (McDowell, 2014, p. 523). That same year, the first children's room was opened in Brookline, M.A. under the supervision of the library's janitor (Sayers, 1963, p. 9–10). In 1896, Lutie Stearns published her "Report on Reading for the Young," a survey of children's work in 195 libraries in the U.S. and Canada, and found that between в…• and ВЅ of the membership of responding libraries were children under sixteen, but only a handful had a separate children's room (p. 82–85). • 24. Personal Librarian Interview For this project, I interviewed Dr. Sonya Gaither, director of the Hightower Library at Gordon State College in Barnesville, Georgia. The challenge Dr. Gaither wanted to focus on was changing procedures within the library that have not been updated in years, specifically how the librarians on her staff conduct appointments with students seeking research assistance through the Personal Librarian Program. Currently, the librarian conducting the appointment does the bulk of the work, while the student participates very little. As a result, students do not learn evaluation skills or research techniques, and librarians are kept busy for thirty minutes to an hour as they identify specific sources for students. This, consequentially, leads to crowds of students, who have made appointments or walked in with a question, waiting to work with the librarian. When asked how these appointments would ideally be handled, Dr. Gaither said that they should be between fifteen and thirty minutes and that the student should be the one in front of the computer while the librarian shows them how to find sources relevant to their topic, but does not actually ... Zimdars has since secured some grant funding to hire temporary employees for the summer to help with the program next summer (personal communication October 10, 2017). Another challenge of a community–led librarian is that they needn't necessarily lbe professional librarians. The public library has great strengths when it comes to providing information literacy programming. There needs to be a change in ideology regarding the function of the library in todays society. "For centuries, libraries have remained essentially separate, even competing with one another to establish and maintain the greatest collection, and now they need to recast themselves as platforms rather than storehouses. (Palfrey, 2015) With the introduction of the internet and online information libraries need to rebrand themselves. Libraries around the world can now share information with one another in real time, and the competition for resources has ended. That said, there is still value in networking with other agencies devoted to education and information. John Palfrey, author of Biblio Tech suggests that, "Libraries must act as ambitiously networked institutions, connecting their network effectively with partner intuitions: archives, historical societies, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations."(2015) More agencies are partnering up to give their patrons access to the best and most credible information.

Training and Education Whether it is a public librarian, academic librarian, a law librarian, a librarian working in the business field, or a medical librarian, it is the norm for librarians to understand the dynamics of technology. Not only are librarians required to have knowledge of the newest technology, they are also being required to be able to use it. Sometimes there is a gap in what is being taught to future librarians in their school programs and what is being required of them within the job sector. In order to sustain as a competitor within the workforce, librarians need to be prepared to reach beyond the classroom guidance along with teaching and seek outside resources for further educational ... • 36. Green Libraries are more than just Buildings In this review I have discussed Aulisio's article that is "Green libraries are more than just a buildings". Aulisio (2013) is an assistant professor in the Weinberg Memorial Library. He is the Evening Supervisor and Public Service Librarian. Author earned his BA from Bloomsburg University, his MS from Drexel and his MLA from the University of Pennsylvania. In this article, the author argues that a green library is something more than just the architecture. I agree with the author in the context of definition in which the author said that green library as any library that promotes sustainability through education, operation and outreach. There few major issues presented by the author. That is the importance of learning about sustainability, incorporating sustainability into librarianship, library as a teaching tool and also sustainable operations and outreach. The first of this is the importance of learning about sustainability. The author come out with his own statement that sound he posit that a true green library is one that promotes sustainability by leading by example and attempts to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of academic librarianship. By engaging in these activities, librarians can support an ethical and academic mission of working within a sustainable lifestyle that will fully envelope their campus and beyond. According to United Nation (1987), Sustainability can be referring as meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Importance Of Community Ligagement And Outreach... Community engagement and outreach librarians are a relatively new and growing speciality in public librarianship. The idea of outreach is not a new concept for libraries. The Offices for Literacy and Outreach Services was established in the 1970s, formerly the Office for Literacy Services to the Disadvantaged (McCook, 2011). While community engagement and outreach can have different connotations, for the purposes of this paper, they are going to be used interchangeably, as the duties and responsibilities for each type of librarian does not vary much in job postings. The ALA describes outreach librarians as providers of "equitable delivery of library services to all people through the development of programs, policies, practices, and behaviors which make the library available to all people" (ALA, n.d.–c). Many libraries are just hiring their first community engagement and outreach librarians, such as The Verona Public Library (Newton, 2017). Community engagement and outreach librarians seek ways in which to develop deep connections with the community organizations and residents while being the face of the library. This staffing "trend" moves libraries away from their desks and out into the community to reach community members where they are (Stevenson & Domsy, 2016). Scope and Tasks A big question in outreach is should the goal be focused on bringing people into the library or bringing library services out into the community (M. • 38. Library System CHAPTER I PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND I. Introduction Freeman Dyson has said, "Technology is a gift of God, after the gift of life; it is perhaps the greatest of God's gift. It is the monitor civilizations of arts and sciences". With technology, they can get things done precisely, efficiently and fast. Wireless communication devices keep you connected wherever you go. These things were developed due to greater inventions and creativity of their designers. But on the other hand, there are still places or institutions that have a slow growth of development when it comes to advancement of technology. • 39. The Library For Books And Reading Were Prevalent After multiple visits to the library to observe and interview, underlying themes of love for books and reading were prevalent. When interviewing my librarian informant many times she said she loved to read and loved books. The job of a librarian suited her perfectly. While on tour with her, I notice the care other employees took while handling books as well, they would sort them gently and with gloved hands re–shelve them carefully as if handling a glass vase. When asked what they did after hours or for fun, a few stated they just read. I have my focus group scheduled for this week and most likely will get similar responses. Also the theme of the modern library relying heavily on technology was reoccurring. From automated book check outs to security tags, to librarians running computerized queries to find a book's statistics: frequency of check out, popularity and if it should still be offered at the library. The librarians use computers and technology in almost all the request they get to assist patrons. From when a book is out, to when something new will be available, to when a book should be back in the library or if it is available online. I will need to collect some follow up data and the data provided from the focus group should solidify most of my findings. I would also like to see if all focus group members have the same respect for books and reading or if I can pick up that this is only a job/paycheck for them. I just finished the process of transcribing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Job Requirements And Importance Of Librarians The job requirements and importance of librarians The whole point to the human race is to reproduce and to become civilized is the ultimate human goal. Libraries are needed in our society as a quiet place to study and learn the knowledge needed to succeed in the future. Libraries are the structure of our society, they are the home to countless books and even more knowledge. Some may say that libraries and, therefore librarians, aren 't needed because children do most of their learning in schools instead of in libraries. Which is a valid point but most english classes ask students to visit libraries in order to read books that are needed for that particular class. Another point that can be pointed out is that even in the classroom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 41. The Librarian The librarian begins to mercilessly ride atop the man, harder, faster, groaning and gasping and leaving little pink rivers of claw marks all over his chest. The man can't remember the last time he came for any reason. It was making himself cum thinking about this moment, he knew, before he met this insane woman, before he threw his life away for some jerk off fantasy. Now he felt the rhythmic motion of her pussy wrapped tightly around his cock, the up and down, the slippery warm movement, her breathing, and the man could only close his eyes and pray for some escape from this place, from this moment, from her. "No, no, no, no," she gasps, "you don't get away that easily, pet," she whispers, "Cum for me, cum inside me, feel my perfect pussy, remember how I taste," she says. The man's entire body tenses up. He hates himself. He wants to scream, "Fuck you," but his fear stops him. He's too afraid of the things he saw on that first night. He's too helpless. He's her prisoner. Instead, he feels his cock swell with her every methodical undulation, with her every warm, tight stroke of her pussy on his dick. He grits his teeth, he tries to imagine baseball statistics, or stock quotes, or the last morning's headline. His cock begins to spurt then spasm uncontrollably. The librarian smiles and bites her lip. He can feel her pussy throbbing and squeezing his shaft rhythmically, the librarian's body tenses, her fingernails cut deeply into the flesh of the man's chest. "Mmmm," the ... • 42. Issues in Academic Library: Essential Skills of... 1.0 Introduction An academic library is a library where it is to be found in an academic institution. As stated by Burke and Miller (1993), "the information world has expanded dramatically over the last decade due mainly to developments in communication. Information technology developments have resulted in new methods of communications whilst the latest telecommunications systems have altered the speed of communications. Both of these major changes have affected the way in which information is handled, stored and exchanged across the world." Therefore, an academic library acts as a source of information where the users within the institution have the access to dig in information and look for guidance from the librarians. Kakabadse and Korac–Kakabadse (2000) stated that "in order to meet the corporate needs of the future, organisations require professionals with a combination of IS/IT knowledge, management skills, leadership experience and high motivation." In contrast, managerial competencies and operational skills can be taught within a classroom setting, whereas leadership capabilities are often best developed on the job, aided by mentoring, counselling and intensive feedback on personal and team performance."
