Child Online Protection
1. Are children safe surfing the Internet these days? Is it adult’s responsibility?
Or children’s?
To begin with, the safety of children is very important because they are our
future. They must be responsible enough to have a computer in their bedroom.
Some web pages are not for them. They may contain things that children
shouldn’t see.
There are some things that they should never write on a web page or website.
Like:
♯ Their address
♯ Their phone number
♯ Their e-mail
♯ Photos
♯ Name and surname
♯ School
♯ Ages
♯ Etc.
Parents should be completely sure that their children are doing the right
thing. “We don’t like when they tell us what we must do or not and when they
watch what we are doing, but we must understand that they are watching us
because they want to be sure that we are safe.” Cande
2. WHAT’S COP?
COP (Child Online Protection) is a global initiative created by ITU that makes
sure that children are safe.
Their key objects are:
♯ Identify key risks to children in cyberspace
♯ Create awareness of the risks
♯ Develop practical tools to help governments,
organizations, industry, parents and educators
minimize risk;
♯ Share experience while facilitating international
strategic partnerships to implement these concrete
goals.

3. Are children safe while surfing the Internet alone? Not always. COP (children
online protection) is a project that protects little children. Some children
have Facebook, and they can’t always see their friends connected so they chat
with strangers. Facebook is just one of the many examples of social websites
that we have but there are many other ways of communicating with people:
like Messenger, Twitter, cell phones, etc. This project helps children make
them understand that it is not safe to surf the Internet the way they want.
Some children write a lot of their information on their facebook and older
people that are not good pretend to be their friends or family and invite them
to some places to threaten or hurt them. Parents have to be very careful and
help their children be protected concerning Facebook or any other social
website. Some children don’t know what is going on or what bad people are
doing, but you, as an adult, who loves them; you have to look after them and
make sure they are safe. COP helps you do that, so get interested in it and
keep your kids safe.

4. There are a lot of web pages or websites that are not allowed for
children of our age; however some young people go into those pages.
Especially childrenfromthree tofourteenyears old do not use the Internet
correctly. They are running a serious risk. Whenthey write where they live,
their phone number or their e-mail, some thieves could go to their house,
threaten them or kill them. This is the terrible truth. Little children do not
know how to use the Internet appropriately becausethey do not know how
to read well and they could go into pages that are not for them.
Facebook is one of the most popular social websites. You can chat
with other people, download pictures and play online. But there are some
people that pretend to be other people so we must be really careful about
this, too. For example, you may think that a person is a school’s friend and
you chat with that person and you talk about your life and other stuff, but
what you do not realize is that perhaps that person is not your real friend.
Luckily some people invented, COP (child online protection) COP is a
global initiative createdby ITU, as part of the Global Cyber security agenda,
which wants to deal with cyber security holistically. This organisation was
createdbecause there are many people that make horrible things toothers,
especially teenagers. COP gives you a guide to deal with the things that I
told you before.
Childrenmust know about this because they are the ones who are in
danger. They are the ones who have to be careful and tell their friends to
be careful, too; so as to prevent horrible situations. Guardians, educators,
and adults must know about this because they are the ones who can help
us.
