In politics, power is a crucial component, and having authority over others is critical in legitimizing
that power. Women consistently lack agency and power, especially in political spheres. Fantastical
worlds, like HBO's television series Game of Thrones (GoT), portray women in roles of
empowerment, but their power is contingent on men and on their own sexuality. Despite gaining
positions in political power, women only attain that power or can only use that power in the realm of
men and masculinity. This essay argues that women in Game of Thrones, as political and non–
political actors, are only powerful to the extent to which it roots from archetypical masculine
characteristics and to which it advances their storylines from a man's standpoint. To do so, I will first
contrast political power and apolitical power, namely in terms of female participation and
involvement. Next, I will examine HBO's Game of Thrones in relation to its portrayal of female

does not empower women in the lower–class shepherd's court. For example, during Perdita and
Polixenes' discussion of flowers, Perdita's language is unable to persuade Polixenes to agree with
her opinions. Perdita states that she "[cares] not/ To get slips of" carnations and gillyvors because
they are "nature's bastards" and are not natural. She continues by asserting that "There is an art
which in their piedness shares/ With great creating nature," explaining her belief that because the
flowers are made through crossbreeding, they are unnatural and therefore their beauty is artificial
since it is owed equally to nature and the gardener that bred them (IV.4.82–89). However, Polixenes
is unconvinced by this claim and instead states that although "nature is made better by no mean," all
means of attempting to improve nature must themselves be natural. Therefore, Polixenes believes,

career. Even throughout power struggles, Putin had been able to prevail. What does Putin have to
attribute to his rise in power, was it luck or strategy? Well according to the rhetoric of Gerschewski,
there isn't simply one solid reason or force behind the stability of an autocratic regime. Gerschewski
wrote, "Today's autocracies cannot rely (at least in the long term) entirely on their abuse of power in
a strictly hierarchal, pyramid–shaped political order as the unconstrained tyrants of the past – from
whom all of the power is derived – might have done" (Gerschewski, 2013, pg. 7). Moreover,
Gerschewksi suggests that autocracies rely on three pillars rather than one sole concept. The three
pillars include, Legitimation, Repression, and Co–optation. Within the article he placed emphasis on
observing three processes that take place within and between the pillars in an effort to properly
explain the stabilization processes (Gerschewski, 2013, pg. 12).
The two pillars that seem to be the strongest in the case of Russia's regime, are repression and co–
optation. The weakest pillar, hence would be legitimation. This isn't to say that legitimation wasn't
or isn't at play. As had been mentioned previously, the pillars within the stabilization process are
built over time, and include three processes necessary for observation.

ethnicity. In the novella Under the Feet of Jesus by Helena Maria Viramontes, we see the
development of power through the main character Estrella.It is clear that although Estrella's
background as a powerless migrant worker struggling to support her family financially she shifts
into a powerful role as an empowered young latina woman. The novella tells the story of a young
migrant worker who is faced the the responsibility to help care for her family not only financially
but in a manner of leadership as well. Throughout the story the character of Estrella changes
drastically from a timid outcast to an outspoken leader. In the beginning Estrella is portrayed as a
quiet young woman who is defined as an outsider. When looking at the character of Estrella she is

is her socio–economic circumstances. Coming from a family of five, Estrella assumes the role as the
oldest daughter as well as second mother due to her father's recent abandonment on the family. It is
because of this abandonment that Estrella resents her mother's older boyfriend Perfecto, who in

Some corporations have larger revenue than the gross domestic product of some countries. Walmart
makes more revenue than Norway's GDP: "Norway is the world's 25th largest country with a GDP

They wanted to be independent. Donna was raped and isolated because anyone living in the
institution were considered slow and the employees saw that she was found in a room with her best
