A Brief Note On The Civilian Aerospace Industry Essay
Introduction: The civilian aerospace industry comprises firms that produce aircraft and firms that
parts of these aircraft. The most commonly produced civilian transport airliners range from smaller
turboprop aircraft to larger wide–body jets. Other types aircraft are produced in much smaller
quantities and include two–seat leisure aircraft, corporate jets, and civilian helicopters.
Consumers of the American aircraft include the US government, airline companies, cargo
transportation companies, and various private businesses. Aircraft manufacturers contract with these
firms to produce aircraft. These manufacturers often subcontract with smaller companies for specific
components such as engines and electronics.
The limited amount of aircraft contracts and large economies of scale in aircraft production has led
the civilian aerospace industry to be dominated by a few large firms. The United States is home to
most of the major producers in the civil aerospace industry, notably the Boeing Company, United
Technologies, and General Electric. Due to the complexity of certain aircraft parts, subcontractor
firms specialize to only produce those components. For example, companies such as General
Electric and the United Technologies Corporation specialize in the production of aircraft engines.
These parts are then sold to companies like Boeing and incorporated into the airframe to produce a

Airbus threatens Boeing 's market share
Airbus has already taken most of the market share that was previously held by McDonnell Douglas,
raising its market share to 30%. With the introduction of new aircraft similar to the 747, Boeing is
likely to loose a further percentage. The industry is growing and orders are continuing to grow,
however, the industry is very cyclical and it is important for Boeing to maintain its clients and
relationships to protect themselves in the event of an industry downturn. Boeing must continue to
try to differentiate itself from Airbus via new technology despite the fact that Airbus will likely be
able to match the technology in short period of time with the large subsidies they receive from
European governments.
Staying profitable while maintaining market share
Selling competition in the industry has been continually progressing in recent years. Profits have
been very thin for the world 's airlines, and thus made competition very fierce. In past years Airbus
has priced for market share, forcing Boeing to choose between losing a sale and cutting prices
below costs. Boeing must not get into a bidding war with Airbus for sales of the 747 and A–330 or
A–340. Airbus is set on increasing market share and may price to do so, but Boeing must maintain
its prices and rely on customer relations to maintain current customers.

Before we can begin a discussion on the cultural dynamics within the Boeing Company, it is
imperative that we define and briefly elaborate about the foundational structures of the company,
and its core values. Both of which has a direct impact in the development of its culture.. Being that
Boeing has remote multinational locations, and also has satellite locations throughout the United
States; Boeing utilizes a combination of two organizational structures, the network structure and

Integrity in simplest terms is doing the right thing even when it's most inconvenient. To Boeing's

development; in nearly the same process of development, Boeing's leaders take their acquired
knowledge and skills and pass it on to their employees. Through this continual cycle of education

be implemented one plant at a time starting with there newest facility, the Mirabel Plant. The

The Restructuring of the procurement function plays an important role in realizing the vision of the
BMIS. As was stated earlier, one of the problems the firm faced was the low visibility of inventory.
By improving the visibility, you can reduce inventory levels that would improve liquidity and
reduce cycle time. It was decided mid–project to restructure the procurement function, it was
undertaken in parallel with the implementation of the BMIS and was called the Material Resource
Planning Technology.

The goal of the following report is to provide a detailed analysis of Airbus using the following
analytical tools: PESTEL, Stakeholder, SWOT, Porters Five Forces, VRINE, and Porters model of
competitive advantage. In this report I will describe how each analysis supports the decisions of
Airbus and helps identify any problems or issues facing Airbus based on the outcome of each

Weaknesses that Airbus has, is that due to their structure, and having a multi country consortium,
they were slow to make decisions. In the 1980's Airbus experienced difficulties in financing the A–
320 project, since all the Airbus partner governments had not approved the program (Carpenter, M.
A., & Sanders pg. 613). Airbus was slow in its decision making process because the partners of the
consortium tried to safeguard its own interests rather than make decisions that would benefit them
as a whole (Carpenter, M. A., & Sanders pg. 613).
Opportunities
With Airbus continuing to gain market share on Boeing, some available opportunities that are not
mentioned in the case study is an expansion into military production. Boeing was the leader of
military aircrafts and this would be an open opportunity for Airbus. Airbus eventually entered into
the military production in December 2000 with orders for the German Air force. Airbus has the
opportunity as well to take the lead on green initiatives, as the world grows ever more concerned

The problem presented by Joseph–Armand Bombardier is the upcoming third round of ERP
implementation in his organization. Even though a big improvement over the efficiency and success
of execution between the first ERP round (Mirabel plant) and second round (Saint–Laurent plant),
there is still room for improvement.
The focus is to identify the practices vs. the best of the best practices in the industry in relation to
ERP implementation and offer specifics on how to make this third round provide a higher success
rate.
Main Problem: The rollout of ERP at the Mirabel plant and then followed by the Saint–Laurent
plant did improve, but still had their fair share of challenges. Our area of improvement will be from
the results given after ERP went live at Saint–Laurent. The main problem appears to be still be a
disconnect between the business vs. project team and properly communicating and training those
who will be using the new ERP system (SAP in this situation). While the overall response was
positive, not every issue from the Mirabel plant has been corrected and resolved.
Symptoms: A few symptoms mentioned was that specialized knowledge was concentrated in a few
individuals, embellishing the scorecards to mask some of the issues, gaps in understanding of
priority between project team and actual business, and finally some feedback on wanting SAP to
have done more for an individual's current job.

The most commonly produced civilian transport airliners range from smaller turboprop aircraft to larger wide–body jets. Other types aircraft are produced in much smaller quantities and include two–seat leisure aircraft, corporate jets, and civilian helicopters. Consumers of the American aircraft include the US government, airline companies, cargo transportation companies, and various private businesses. Aircraft manufacturers contract with these firms to produce aircraft. These manufacturers often subcontract with smaller companies for specific components such as engines and electronics. The limited amount of aircraft contracts and large economies of scale in aircraft production has led the civilian aerospace industry to be dominated by a few large firms. The United States is home to most of the major producers in the civil aerospace industry, notably the Boeing Company, United Technologies, and General Electric. Due to the complexity of certain aircraft parts, subcontractor firms specialize to only produce those components. For example, companies such as General Electric and the United Technologies Corporation specialize in the production of aircraft engines.
