There are many skills that an effective distance learning facilitator must have to
become successful. Many different students are now more than ever in need of facilitators
who can effectively teach their online courses. Two skills that are important to have as an
effective distant facilitator are having an online presence in the classroom and engaging
learners and creating community.
I believe that having an online presence is very important in a distant learning
setting because it set the tone for the class. Having a presence in the classroom helps the
students learn by example. Modeling the same behavior sets the tone for the students in
the classroom to model. Having an online presence also shows your brand as a facilitator
and shows how innovative you are when creative different avenues for the students to be
enthused and engaged.
I also believe that being engaging and creating a sense of community is very
important. Every distant learner wants to feel as though they apart of the class. The
student wants to be engaged and have fun. When the student comes to class, they feel it is
the facilitators responsibility to start of the engagement piece. Although it is the student’s
responsibility to receive the engagement piece and continue the engagement through
participation and discussion.
All facilitators need a certain type of training in order to become successful. In
order to master the skill of having an presence in a distant learning classroom forum.
Certain training is key. The facilitator will first need to take an online course themselves
to ensure they can figure out what constitutes as a good facilitator. The facilitator should

be evaluating their experience in the course. They will be able to use the experience to
teach their own online course effectively.
In order to be successful in being an engaging facilitator that creates a sense on
community the training that will need to be done are courses in engaging learners using a
distant learning platform. They will also need to learn different technology platforms like
teams, skype, presentation platforms like SlideShare that allow the student to be
interested in the content through the actual platform like social media groups and
messaging.
In order to become a master in having a presence in the classroom the facilitator
will need to have the following criteria met:
1. Take an online course
2. Take an education curriculum specific in leading highly engaged students
3. Manage their time to be able to respond professionally to promote
learning.
4. Create a sense of presence with consistent discussion and follow up to
establish presence
5. Having compassion for all students, having flexibility and an open mind.
In order to become a master in engaging learners and creating a sense of community the
facilitator will need to have the following criteria:
1. Take an online course.
2. Take an educational curriculum specific in online facilitating.
3. Ask for feedback effectively.

4. Always staying committed to all students regardless of background or learning
style.
5. A successful facilitator is organized and manages time properly.
