The Six Circus Basilica
Circus Basilica: The Christian Circus "But there stands close by another church, renowned for its princely decoration, for the great multitude to enter
then, a lofty church with towering walls, and a great one by reason of its proud grandeur, and gifts made it rich" (Prudentius, 319). One reading this
would assume that this building is just another church in Rome. In fact, the building that is described in this quote is the basilica of S Lorenzo fuori le
mura; one of the six, so far discovered basilicas that are apse–ended. Apart from this similarity, they all also have a lot of the dead buried within, under
and around them, and are usually situated around catacombs. The reason these basilicas are so controversial is because scholars disagree ... Show more

However, because of the many parallels in structure, I argue that the apse ended plan of the circus basilicas were based or influenced by the
circuses. It was a marketing ploy used by the early Christians to convert the pagans, as well as to make this new religion easier to accept and relate
to. I also argue that the circus basilicas were based on the circuses as a way to remember the athletes of Christianity–the martyrs that died in the circus
for their cause; whose graves tended to be close to these basilicas, of not named after

The Circus Is Coming To Town!
"Step right up! The circus is coming to town! Come one, come all! We've spent so much time and money on advertising, so please buy a ticket and
prove our advertising methods to be effective!" The circus industry has been etched into our culture from the mid–1800, where the promoters have built
a sense of awe and fantasy around the whole spectacle. But what is it that has given us this dreamlike perception of the circus; that has built its
mystical realm around it, even for those who have never attended a circus? Why, the advertising of course! While circus advertising may seem like a
mishmash of fancy words and vivid pictures being thrown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Barnum used illustrations because it helped ad a vision to his "humbug" attached to his advertisements. This consumer perception of Barnum offering
mythical and unreal phenomenon (massive elephants, gorillas, ape–man, and mermaids) could not be generated by real–life photography. The
illustrations in relation to the hype ("wonder of the world", "get it now while it's here, "don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity") is effective
because it increases the anticipation, as well as helps the consumer enter a fantasy state and build curiosity of what may lie within the tent. According
to Fox (1959), "There is no effort to deceive the public–but to express the hugeness of everything in figures that carry the idea. If we have fifty
elephants, and say a hundred, it pleases rather than offends. On circus day, everybody wants to think and talk in big figures, because on circus day we
are boys and girls again, and we want to believe that there are a hundred million trillion elephants in the parade, and a billion funny clowns, and whole

Water For Elephants, By Sara Gruen
Throughout time, distinguished authors have succeeded in the goal of portraying the human journey. There has been an innumerable amount of
literature published over the years; however what separates the extraordinary books from the appalling books, is the author's ability to visually and
emotionally move their readers. In order to establish a connection to the audience, an author must understand human experience. In Water for
Elephants by Sara Gruen, two narratives are used, one of an older Jacob, and one of a younger Jacob. This choice is made by the author to help the
reader fully comprehend the circle of life. Everyone succumbs to age sooner or later, and while many books conclude with the narrator finding
contentment at an early age, this is not the case in reality. In the real world, most struggle to achieve fulfillment, by creating an elderly Jacob, in this
case it does not necessarily mean that a live has been fulfilled. The old aged are sometimes just as clueless as the young. Sara Gruen discloses that the
old are not very different from the young; in many cases the old are still playing the game against the formidable opponent of life.
We are introduced to an eager and naГЇve Jacob in the initial stages of the novel. However, Jacob is introduced to the cruelties of the world all too
suddenly, when the death of his parents is abruptly thrust upon him. It states, "I snap out of my stupor. There are people on that train. It matters not a

For many decades, many have tried to obtain a perfect mixture of a healthy state of mind in relation to a healthy body. In order to do this, people
exercise their bodies along with their minds. However, overly exercising can lead to consequences. As a result, a balance needs to be met. When
displaying too many hard core views, the mixture of a healthy mind and a healthy body disappears. Therefore, it is very important to obtain a balance
with strict rules along with some imagination. When looking at facts, it is always one sided, but when using an imagination, the possibilities become
endless and can be looked upon as positive. In the novel Hard Times, there are characters that display a strict view on facts rather than imagination. The

Another example of how Thomas Gradgrind's teachings have failed is Louisa. Louisa sacrifices herself as a wife to Josiah Bounderby in order to
give Tom more freedom and to make Thomas Gradgrind happy. Ultimately, she is very unhappy and just a way to get her family into Josiah
Bounderby's business. As a result of two poor outcomes of factual learning failures, it is safe to conclude that the teachings of Thomas Gradgrind
are at fault. Opposed to Thomas Gradgrind is Josiah Bounderby. He does not believe in education and doesn't think that it is useless to be teaching.
The conflict that Thomas Gradgrind faces with Josiah Bounderby is that they are both different representations on how to educate their children.
Although they both share the views of factual knowledge, the twists in their views are how important education is. Thomas Gradgrind is extremely
strict with the rules and cannot stray from his set standards. However, Josiah Bounderby says that education is "to be tumbled out of doors, necks
and crops and out upon the shortest allowance of everything except blows" (Dickens 314). It is evident to say that Josiah Bounderby sees a strict
education as unnecessary and does not think it should exist. Josiah Bounderby owns a bank and a factory and has a good living. He has high
political standards and is considered a very powerful man. Most people look up to Josiah Bounderby with high regard since he is wealthy. Due to his

"Ouch!" Nova mumbled, sitting up and holding her head. It felt like She had been hit with a baseball bat. Nova, a teenage girl with long black hair
and skin of a dark complexion, had a terrible headache. While slowly getting up to examine her environs, she realizes she was in the middle of what

metal chairs and leftover rubbage. The weather–beaten tent was ridden with holes and it reeked of mold. There was one more item to inspect, a rope.
She walks over to the rope and pulls it out of curiosity. Due to this action, the curtain behind her rose, revealing an empty stage. Suddenly, the lights
went out and when they came back on she was in the center of the tent once more; the only nuance was the man standing on the stage.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, it is time for a special performance, "Blink!" the man on stage announces. His voice was jaunty and clear. He was dressed in
motley of dark colored raggedy clothes. Abruptly, a sequence of questions shot out of Nova's mouth.
"Where am I? Who are you?" and as her last unanswered question shot out, the lights went out. "Why am I here?" she roared out. Only this time she

Animals Deserve Freedom Too
Animal circuses should be banned and illegal throughout the world. Animals in the circus do not receive proper care and treatment. They are beaten
and forced to learn tricks and stunts against their will. Also, animals held in captivity do not learn specialized skills they instinctively pick up in the
wild. Once a circus animal relies on humans for food and help, they will never be able to survive in the wild due to their dependency on humans.
Many animals in the circus were pulled away from their mothers at a young age. These animals deserve to be with their families in their natural
habitats not in cages, forced to perform tricks for human enjoyment. The use of animals in circuses is not morally correct and should be stopped.
Mistreatment and abuse is one of the main reasons animals should not be allowed in circuses. People who work in the circus use various methods to
get animals to cooperate. Animals can potentially be beaten, harassed or neglected until they do what the circus workers want them to do. Some
specific methods used by the circus include: whips, tight collars, muzzles, and electric prods (Circuses). A prime example is the organization, Cole
Bros Circus. They have been cited multiple times by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for animal welfare violations. A former elephant trainer

The Ethical Treatment Of Circus Animals
The circus can be dated back to as far as 1782 in Paris, France where people came to enjoy family friendly entertainment. The circus has always
included tricks and stunts by not only people but also highly trained animals. For decades now, people have considered the treatment of animal
performances in the circus cruel and unjust. Protesters argue that animals are stripped from their native lands and forced to preform shows, meanwhile
being treated harshly and abused by the human circus performers. Tigers, elephants, and other animals are trained and forced to entertain audiences by
standing on their heads, jumping through hoops, and doing balance tricks. Spectators have considered this a spiteful treatment of animals, for it is
often physically challenging and frightening to the animal performers. There have been reports of circus trainers abusing animal performers with
whips, muzzles, and other painful tools. Today, protestors are fighting for animal's rights and against the use of animals in circuses'. Protesters are
objecting to animal circus performers, purely because of the belief that these animals are being forced to do impossible stunts, are in confined areas,

Symbolism In The Flying Circus, By Susan Crandall
The Flying Circus, by Susan Crandall, is set in the early 1920's. The story follows Henry Schuler, a boy on the run, who meets Gil and Cora, two
other people with rough pasts. Together, the three of them, along with an old plane and cute dog named Mercury, form Mercury's Daredevils. This
flying circus act brings the trio all across the country, but each of the characters have a secret that could destroy the makeshift family they've become.
Throughout the novel, you see the three of them torn apart and brought together as they deal with conflicts ranging from plane safety and love
triangles, to kidnapping and murder. My favorite passage in the book is, "Disaster lived by its own rules. Most times it crept up from behind, wiping

As the story develops in The Flying Circus, the diction being used in the story changes. All of the characters seem to have a greater and more
optimistic outlook on life by the end of the novel, which is apparent through the words chosen to describe their emotions and actions. In the
beginning, most of the word usage describes the loss, pain, and fear that Henry is feeling. An example of the gloomy and dark tone that is present at
the beginning of the story is when the author states, "his insides were full of slithering black snakes of dread" (Crandall, p.182). But, as the story
progresses, there is a noticeable change in tone, as Henry becomes more hopeful about his future as opposed to merely running from his past. Even
with small things such as descriptions or observations, the tone seems lighter by the end of the story, just as Henry continues to build a fulfilling life
and supportive family around him. This helps develop the theme that a sense of belonging can be discovered in the most unlikely places, as you
wouldn't expect that Henry could achieve such prosperity based on his situation at the beginning of the novel. In the end, though, he finds a sense of
belonging in the family that Mercury's Daredevils

According to PeTA , The tricks that animals are forced to perform–such as when bears balance on balls, apes ride motorcycles, and elephants stand on

during circus acts are reminders that the animals are being forced to perform.

However, recently part of the world had been shocked with the video footage of animals cruelty in an infamous circus. This had arisen a controversy of

Feelings of terrify if they do not perform well and anxiety of the awaiting punishments are those that motivate them to act. These feelings are basically
created by regular excessive trainings.
Tools, including bull hook, electric pads, metal rods, and drugs, are used simultaneously in the training sessions. Elephants, despite their thick skins,
are very sensitive in several parts, particularly under their chins, behind their ears, and around their eyes. Trainers would use these weaknesses, striking
them with pointed bull hook, as their aces to control the elephants. Teeth of the animals are plunged with hammer, reducing the risks of trainers being
bitten and make them more manageable. Drugs are injected and given to some of the animals, particularly to alter their moods and to stabilize them in
desirable conditions. Carry forward with the effects of the training, animals are exposed to some effects, both physiologically and psychologically. On
physiological effects, each of the animals requires its own unique and specific needs for diet, health, veterinary care, and social interaction. However,
circuses train animals in similar ways, compelling them to live and travel under same conditions. In addition, the intense heat during the summer and
freezing cold during the winter induce animals to die when they travel from one city to another. The poor ventilation inside the cage also leads to

The Circus has been an extremely popular form of entertainment during the 20th century. The circus creates an image of drifters and dreamers in the

The following factors played a major role in the attractiveness of the circus industry:– * Animal acts provided an added form of entertainment along

Theme Of Greed In Water For Elephants
Greed plays a predominant role throughout Water For Elephants. Many characters seemed to have embodied a very greedy nature during this time.
Although, one cannot blame such characters for their nature because if you take into account the era they lived in, they quite possibly had no other
choice but to be greedy. Although, when I think of greed I don't just think of it as a physical way desire for money and materialistic needs but also as
a selfish mindset. I also think that the author, Sara Gruen, made a comprehensible point of identifying greed as a main cause of the downfall of many
characters and the circus itself. Therefore, greed, in a physical or mental manner, played an utmost superior role in the book Water For Elephants....

We can't leave them without water" (Gruen 118) . This act itself proves how greedy and careless Uncle Al is because he is willing to let animals be
malnourished in order to make a good deal. Another instance would be when Uncle Al buys Rosie and the elephant car and forces the working men
out of their own cars for performers. August claimed, " ...we will now have sixty–four working men sleeping under wagons on the flats", which means
all these working men will have to sleep in uncomfortable ways just because Uncle Al decided that Rosie was more important (Gruen 131). This
once again shows how greedy and unsympathetic Uncle Al truly is to those around him. In the matter of emotional greediness, I observed that
August carried a great amount of this trait. August is a very commanding and rude person, he always managed to manipulate others into thinking
and doing what he wanted so he could be happy. I also observed that he was very greedy in a sense when it came to Marlena. He was completely
overprotective of her and made sure he bought her as many materialistic things as she wanted in order to make up for his mistakes. An instance of
this would be in chapter 17 when August buys Marlena jewellry in order to make up for having her perform with Rosie before the act was polished
(Gruen 233). Furthermore, Jacob seems to take notice of August's behavior and questions whether what he is doing is for the benefit of everyone.

The Rise and Demise of Vaudeville Essay
As far as the development and demise of vaudeville, there is much to be said. But to truly understand its rise and fall, first one must understand what
vaudeville is. Vaudeville was a theatrical genre of entertainment that was popular in the United States from the early 1880s until the mid 1930s. Each
performance consisted of a series of unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill. Types of acts included classical musicians, dancers, comedians,
trained animals, magicians, impersonators, acrobats, illustrated songs, jugglers, scenes from plays, athletes, lecturing celebrities, and movies.

Although vaudeville seemed to be a long standing staple in our society, like all good things, it must come to an end. the decline and death of
vaudeville appears certain, clear and inevitable. From the performers point of view, there was no perspective other than the "here and now" of
their lives. Each day seemed to differ little from the previous, and speculation about the future was, as ever, informed by hear say and past
experience. As an array of specialty acts, vaudeville was an enterprise without name that, over many years, could be found in the marketplaces of
Asia and Europe. It eventually spread around the world to the farthest corners of Australia and Africa. Performers worked when and where they
could, quite often in undesired locations. A certain clichГ© attached to performing in bed and breakfast's, saloons and public houses after their
owners added stages and audience pits set apart from the tavern. It soon became quite taxing for performers to not only live the same shows
everyday, but to move on and find other work after they were no longer needed in vaudeville shows. Still, this was not the only reason for the demise
of vaudeville, although it played a large part. The largest contributing factor was the invention of the motion picture in the 1930's. There was no longer
a need for people to be entertained by a comical, musical, circus style side show. Now they found a more intimate and fascinating way of enjoying a

Should Animals Be Banned Of Animals Research
As a young child, you would probably remember your parents taking you to the circus where you witnessed all your favourite animals preforming their
tricks. As an innocent child you would not have thought about what happens behind the scenes or the preparation these animals experience before
performing on stage.
The reality is that animals are trained by fear, suffering and disrespect, are kept in tiny cages where they can barely move around and they travel most
of their life time in severe temperatures which they are not used to in their natural habitat. I strongly believe that circuses which make animals perform
should be banned.
"Sink that hook into em ... when you hear that screaming, then you know you've got their attention!"
Feet of elephants are chained because of their size otherwise they might escape.
How Are They Trained?
Animals in the circus do not willingly stand on their heads, with two legs, on balls, jump through rings on fire or ride bicycles. Animals don't normally
do these useless acts in the wild or in their habitats.
Did you know that tigers are terrified of fire, but they would rather jump through it on rings than face the consequences of the trainers?

small town hero of Ashton; excelling in sports and academics. When a giant begins terrorizing the town, Edward volunteers to talk to him. During
their conversation, Edward convinces the giant that they are both "too big" for the town of Ashton. The pair agree to travel to "the big city" in order
for them to be in a place that better suits their ambitions. This moment changes Edward's life forever because it is when he travels outside of Ashton
that he begins his new life. STEP 2. Refusal of the Call Although Edward does not refuse the call, there is a point where the option is presented to him.

Edward is a bit suspicious of the town, but the people insist that he stays. A local poet explains that in Specter, the foods is better, water is sweeter,
the weather is always beautiful, and the wind makes a symphony as it whistles through the trees. Edward becomes an honorary town member for a
few days and he tries to figure out what to do next. STEP 5. The Belly of the Whale After spending a few days in Specter, Edward experiences the
Belly of the Whale. He decides that he wants to leave because he does not want to settle down yet. Instead of living in the picture perfect world of
Specter and living a care free life, he decides to venture off. He meets back up with the giant and the two find work at a circus. Stage: INITIATION
STEP 1. The Road of Trials Upon entering the circus, Edward spots a beautiful girl whom he vows to marry. However, she soon vanishes and he
never learns her name. The ringmaster, Amos, agrees to provide Edward with clues about the girl each month that he works for him. He does
everything Amos asks of him, which includes sticking his head in a lion's mouth, washing an obese circus performer, cleaning up after the elephants,
and being fired from a cannon. Edward completes every task with a smile knowing that he is one step closer to meeting his future wife. STEP 2. The
Meeting with the Goddess Although a hero's "goddess" is not always an actual god–like woman, Edward's is. After working for Amos for three years,

Orcas Should Not Be In Captivity
Splash! The loud noise of the majestic Orca. The beautiful creature known for swimming in the blue oceans but instead they are trapped in a pool
of despair and sadness just for our entertainment and stuck in a routine of entertaining Americans who probably are not smart enough to know about
Orcas. However do people think it is right to lock them up in this way? Over the years these poor creatures have been stuck in a routine they simply
do not like. Animals should be free not locked up and this is disgusting, evil and it is cruel. All though some people think it can bring money into the
aquarium industry or aquariums can educate children but I think it is extremely evil. One reason why I think Orcas should not be in captivity is that
their attitude towards humans dramatically changes when kept in captivity and can result in deadly dilemmas. Tilikum the whale broke SeaWorld
trainer Dawn Brancheau's jaw and wounded sections of her spine. Firstly the Orcas should not be in captivity because they start to become more
aggressive and frustrated. I mean how would you like it if... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A escalating number of casualties, failed pregnancies plus early deaths. This shows when the Orcas are in captivity they have a higher chance of
developing serious health conditions. If they were not in captivity they would not have these problems. Plus if these Orcas are being looked after
surely they would have less of a chance of having problems. Right? Wrong. This is saddening and vile and without doubt wrong. Has this changed
your opinion about Orca's now? A person like you would not think Orca's in aquariums was a good idea. Surely SeaWorld should have some common
sense because look at the shocking results of the captivity, it results in deaths of babies. This is incredibly upsetting and terrifying to know that these
Orca's will have serious issues to their health. This is

Why We Should Be Kept Captive To Animals
The smell of cotton candy and popcorn in the air and screams of happy children filling your ears. You see elephants, tigers and a whole variety of
exotic animals performing tricks to stun the audience. However, as the circus packs up for the next city, many people are blindsided to what happens
behind the scenes. Some argue that circuses are fun and lighthearted. However, the sad truth is that the poor animals you just saw perform a
magnificent show, are being held in a unjustful state of captivity. Circuses can cause damage to animals, being kept in cages can cause mental
problems, and animals are forced to do their unusual activity. Therefore, circuses are not good.
For starters, circuses can cause damage to animals. Animals that are just learning their routine for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Imagine you being in a cage just big enough for you to turn around in, that's how big these animal cages are. (According to the website "One Green
Planet"),"animals in cages are more likely to have a shorter lifespan" because they won't be getting the same amount of exercise than being in the wild.
While some may argue, that animals should be kept captive because they receive the medicine they need, it is true that animals without medicine in the
wild are healthier than the ones that receive medicine. Some evidence to prove this reason is (Animal Equality) it states "Animals that are in the wild
tend to live longer than the ones that are behind bars"
As circuses keep growing with a variety of animals, more and more animals are being abused. Every animal is different just like every human is, some
think animals should be kept in captivity and in circuses because they get things that they won't get in the wild, other think the opposite. Those are the
main reasons I think animals should not be in captivity, I hope it has changed what you thought about the animals in circuses and anywhere else in the

E.B. White’s essays
In E.B. White's essays, "Once More to the Lake "and 'The Ring of Time", the author demonstrates two different interpretations of time and how it is
used to symbolize meaning to each piece. "Once More to the Lake" is an essay that is derived mostly from White's personal experience while "The
Ring of Time" is mostly examining a teenage girl performing at the circus, in the eyes of someone else. Both of these articles give the reader insight of
how the author uses the theme of time to show different aspects to the storyline. In White's essays, he uses strategies that reflect on the past and foresee
the future, use other individuals as vehicles to access an alternative temporality and demonstrate his own perceptions and visions in ... Show more

In contrast to "The Ring of Time", White's essay "Once More to the Lake" uses the narrator's son to explore the notion of time. While visiting the lake
again, he was going to use a motor boat with his son and just by "watching him and remembering the things that could be done with the old
one–cylinder engine "(White, Once More to the Lake 3). In that quotation, White is giving example as to how the narrator is exploring the notion of
time through his son. As his son uses the boat, he remembers him once using the boat with the same type of engine, therefore he is reliving the past
through his son. In similarity, both stories use other people as an object to help you see how White explores the notion of time, and it is all due to his
interpretations of each character. White uses the strategy of demonstrating his own perceptions and visions in order to explore the notions and reality
of time. In both essays, the author thinks of time as a major theme that gives meaning to the storyline. In "The Ring of Time", White claims that time is
moving in a circle. As quoted from the narrator "as I watched with the others, our jaws dropped, our eyes alight, I became painfully conscious of the
element of time...everything seemed to be taking the shape of a circle, conforming to the course of the horse...then time

Should Animals Be Used In A Circus
Animals should not be used in a circus. First,Animals in zoos are hurt and abused just to do a little old trick. They are locked and cages and beaten
and starved.Next, They are all cramped in a cage together and chained up.Also, they are whipped ad smacked around to do something they do not want
to do.
Animals are locked up and abused. "RaeLeann Smith stats in the article that "In the United States, no government agency monitors animal training

animal crew employees Archele Hundley and Bob Tom contacted PETA independently after witnessing what they described as routine animal abuse in
the circus, including a 30–minute beating of an elephant in Tulsa, Okla., that left the animal screaming and bleeding profusely from her wounds."
According to RaeLeann Smith "Hundley and Tom reported that elephants are chained whenever they are out of public view and are forced to perform
while sick or injured."And,Animals are also stabbed and punched and thrown around until they are feeling anger, hurt or scared. They are beaten with

Informative Speech On Animal Abuse
I.There is not one circus in the United States that treats their animals humanly. According to dosomething.org, "Every major circus that uses animals
has been cited for violating the minimal standards of care set by the United States Animal Welfare."
II.This is a clear indication that animal abuse is prevalent in U.S. circuses.
III.I feel credible to speak about this because I have conducted research over the past week.
IV.Today I will inform you about how animals performing in circuses are confined and restrained, show abnormal behaviors, and are mistreated
frequently.
Body:
First, let's talk about how animals are confined in the circus.
I.Circus Animals are forced into an unnatural state of confinement by the circus.

Different species are often mixed together and develop avoidance behaviors as well as tend to spend more time in a state of alertness.
So far we have talked about how animals are confined in a circus, how this effects their behavior, and now I am going to talk about how they are
treated by the circus employees.
III.Circus Animals are forced to perform tricks and mistreated when they do not perform them correctly.
A.These animals do not naturally perform these tricks they are forced to perform them.
1.In order to train the circus animals, circus trainers physically punish them.
2.The training practices are hidden from the public eye because the circus knows they are disturbing.
B.According to lcanimal.org, "animals in the circus are routinely whipped, beaten with long metal rods, shocked with electric prods, and struck with
clubs."
1.Circus trainers often hit elephants with bullhooks.
2.Circus trainers will also break bears noses to teach them to walk on their hind legs.
Conclusion:
Today I have talked to you about the conditions a circus animal lives in, how this effects their health and how they are treated. In conclusion, baby
animals are torn away from their mothers and forced into a torturing process, just to train for one small act. Will you take a stand to stop this

Do Animals Enjoy The Circus Like Us?
Do Animals Enjoy the Circus Like Us? "The wild, cruel animal is not behind the bars of cage. He is in front of it"–Munthe, Axel 1857. Animals have
been used in circuses for generations around the world. You will never find monkeys dance waltz, bears ride bicycles, or tigers jump through burning
hoops in the wild. Circuses have broken the law of nature. Circus performers collect money easily by using animal to do stupid tricks and they even
do not take care of them properly. Animals should live in cramped cages and travel in the dark cold trailer. That's why I think using animals as
entertainment in the circus should be forbidden. You may laugh while enjoying animals performance in the circus, but let's see if you still can laugh

to force animals learn tricks. Trainers drug some animals to make them "manageable" and surgically remove the teeth and claws of others (Ashley
Palmer, 2016). As well as using direct physical contact to make the animals learn tricks, they are often forced to go without food and water for
prolonged periods when they haven't performed well during training sessions, as well as during travel periods. Eventhough it's clear that animals
training in circus is cruel, but some people think animals circus can be a chance for children to see wild animals that they may never see again and
learn about animals. But I think this is the wrong way to learn about animals for children.
So now we know that how suffer is animals live in the circus. They have the same right to live like human's because we are the same life creatures in
the same world. Using animals as entertainment in the circus should be banned because it's an animals abuse, it's threathen public safety, and has cruel

The Night Circus shows up without warning. It becomes an instant success. It proves the impossible, possible. It treats all your senses, either with the
black and white tents, or the unique caramel scent in the air. It welcomes everyone to get lost in clouds, experience impossible feats by illusionists and
acrobats, or stumble upon a more hidden tent with sensations in a bottle. But the most exclusive characteristic is the fact that it only opens at night.

Essay on Social Networking: A Modern Day Freak Show
The carnival grotesque, with its freak shows and abnormal humans, was very popular and controversial back in the late 18th to early 19th century, by
then it had matured into a distinct form of entertainment. In the 21st century, has the concept become dated? Has the freak show been revealed for the
mistreatment and subjugation of many poor human beings? We live in times where many things that were once discriminated are now accepted and
many kinds of people recognized as members of society and although there are instances that would challenge that notion, it is only a minority. This
represents the progress mankind has made to understand one another. But has the idea of the freak show been abandoned with this new period? It is

The social media sites allow us to upload and express our identity. Of course there is debate on insults over Facebook post online, but debaters
argue social networking is a new field of communicating there is no social conditioning really to establish how to properly act online compare to
how different from how we act in real life. It is also with social media that even when we point out the freak show and in some way degrade the
person, it leads to a positive matter. (Observers) For example, the article, "Serious documentary or freak show" depicts a medical professional
journey in observing a clan of deformed natives. The clan was being "sensationalize" by providing programming and donations to them for animals
rights regardless it is a cartoon. However because of this, the clan got money and medical treatment for themselves (Koppel 325). That is an example
of exploiting the deformities; it actually helped the clan despite a loss in privacy and dignity. That is true, that social networking has allowed us to
communicate with more people. We are social creatures; we enjoy the company of others but are sometimes limited because of distance situations,
language barriers, and even failure to understand one another. Social networking is a concept that has received an upgrade along with society. These
upgrades are sites like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and etc. They are the new ways we socialize

The Negative Effects Of Ending Animal Cruelty
Ending Animal Cruelty In today's society makeup is becoming more and more popular. Makeup brands are constantly coming out with new products
made of different ingredients that they think will pull people in. Where do these ingredients come from? How do they know they're safe for people?
Makeup brands are using innocent animals to make sure that these products aren't going to be harmful to people. But of course they don't know if they
are harmful before they test them on animals. Many high end makeup brands test on animals without anyone even knowing. Lush cosmetics does not
test on animals, this ad is part of the campaign they have to get people involved in trying to end or replace animal testing. In my first ad Lush uses
a cute little bunny to get to appeal to the viewers pathos. Seeing a small animal with makeup that is harmful to it isn't going to make people want to
buy a brand's products. That is the message Lush is trying to get across by this ad. If the makeup is harmful to animals it would be harmful to you.
Not to mention these animals don't deserve this at all. The people testing these products on these animals don't know the effect it will have on them,
hence the reason why it is a test. The pathos in this ad is going to make you think twice about buying makeup brands that test on animals. The second
ad is a commercial starring Angie Hill. In the commercial Hill is using makeup on her face, perfume on her neck and also showing the effects of it. As

Animal Performers Research Paper
The Truth Behind Animal Performers If someone was repeatedly hit, stabbed and whipped for the sake of entertainment, would we sit and watch? If
someone was snatched from his family and home, for the sake of entertainment, would we promote it? If someone's well being, happiness and health
was ignored for the sake of entertainment, would we allow it? These are the conditions thousands of animals have to endure everyday. If they aren't
acceptable for humans, they aren't acceptable for animals. While many may believe animals in entertainment attractions are well taken care of, they are
abused daily and are forced to perform.

In their study, they found that two to four million visiting tourists financially supported attractions that contribute to large–scale animal abuse. Also,
they discovered that 80 percent of TripAdvisor reviewers did not realize that the attractions were not animal friendly (Bale 2015). Only wildlife
sanctuaries, involving 1,500–13,000 animals, were inclined to have positive effects on the animals' welfare. On the contrary, the welfare of 230,00 to
550,000 animals kept at other attractions were negatively affected ("Global Scale" 2015). However, it is possible for these depressing numbers of
abuse to decrease. If more of us are aware of the exploitation of entertainment animals, we can either advocate for better treatment or shun such
entertainment. This could cause the demand for such shows to decrease. It would also motivate show owners to stop using animals, eliminating unfair

the audience's heath; they just don't know it because they aren't being informed. Circus elephants have been diagnosed with human strain of

Did you know that animals have the right to be protected by the Animal Welfare Act but when animals are not performing they are housed in small
traveling crates ("11 Facts About Circus", 2015)? Animals being used in circuses are constantly traveling, making them stuck in a confined area. This
kind of confinement has led to harmful psychological effects ("11 Facts AboutCircus", 2015) on these animals. Animals have been in used in circuses
since about the 1800's. But, there has been controversy and many arguments over the treatment of the animals. Especially when it comes to them being
used in entertainment. In this paper, I will present alternative position on the topic of animals used and their treatment in circuses.
Circuses have been around since the 1800, providing entertain for many people throughout the world. The modern circus that we all know of, has

Behind The Big Top Speech
Ashley Timms Persuasive Speech Riker April 14, 2015 Behind the Big Top I'm sure the majority of you have been to a circus. Can you take a

close minded adults is the suffering that those animals really endure. Bears, elephants, tigers, and other animals do not voluntarily ride bicycles and

Revulsion In Tod Browning's Freaks
With figurative eye of newt and toe of frog, Tod Browning's Freaks stirs a grotesque, boiling caldron of Terror, Horror, and Revulsion within the
viewer. Perpetually flinging itself between these three genres of fear, in an artful dance of death, Browning splices, mutates, and combines images to
create a Frankenstein's Monster of conjoined dread and trepidation.
Freaks is not a documentary and does not try to resolve or rectify the dilemma between Good and Evil, Humans and Monsters; or Us vs. Them; and
certainly it is not a film promoting "Freaks, they're just like us!" Instead, I believe, Browning's intention is to purposely churn a disturbing witches'

Circus Basilicas Mark Christian Martyrs

  • 1. The Six Circus Basilica Circus Basilica: The Christian Circus "But there stands close by another church, renowned for its princely decoration, for the great multitude to enter then, a lofty church with towering walls, and a great one by reason of its proud grandeur, and gifts made it rich" (Prudentius, 319). One reading this would assume that this building is just another church in Rome. In fact, the building that is described in this quote is the basilica of S Lorenzo fuori le mura; one of the six, so far discovered basilicas that are apse–ended. Apart from this similarity, they all also have a lot of the dead buried within, under and around them, and are usually situated around catacombs. The reason these basilicas are so controversial is because scholars disagree ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, because of the many parallels in structure, I argue that the apse ended plan of the circus basilicas were based or influenced by the circuses. It was a marketing ploy used by the early Christians to convert the pagans, as well as to make this new religion easier to accept and relate to. I also argue that the circus basilicas were based on the circuses as a way to remember the athletes of Christianity–the martyrs that died in the circus for their cause; whose graves tended to be close to these basilicas, of not named after ... • 2. Cultural Shift And Rifts Analysis: The Circus Is Coming To... Bruno Mariafrancis History of Advertising Prof: Janice Fung October 21, 2014 The Circus Is Coming To Town! "Step right up! The circus is coming to town! Come one, come all! We've spent so much time and money on advertising, so please buy a ticket and prove our advertising methods to be effective!" The circus industry has been etched into our culture from the mid–1800, where the promoters have built a sense of awe and fantasy around the whole spectacle. But what is it that has given us this dreamlike perception of the circus; that has built its mystical realm around it, even for those who have never attended a circus? Why, the advertising of course! While circus advertising may seem like a mishmash of fancy words and vivid pictures being thrown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Barnum used illustrations because it helped ad a vision to his "humbug" attached to his advertisements. This consumer perception of Barnum offering mythical and unreal phenomenon (massive elephants, gorillas, ape–man, and mermaids) could not be generated by real–life photography. The illustrations in relation to the hype ("wonder of the world", "get it now while it's here, "don't miss this once in a lifetime opportunity") is effective because it increases the anticipation, as well as helps the consumer enter a fantasy state and build curiosity of what may lie within the tent. According to Fox (1959), "There is no effort to deceive the public–but to express the hugeness of everything in figures that carry the idea. If we have fifty elephants, and say a hundred, it pleases rather than offends. On circus day, everybody wants to think and talk in big figures, because on circus day we are boys and girls again, and we want to believe that there are a hundred million trillion elephants in the parade, and a billion funny clowns, and whole bushels and bushels of beautiful ladies on ... • 3. Water For Elephants, By Sara Gruen Throughout time, distinguished authors have succeeded in the goal of portraying the human journey. There has been an innumerable amount of literature published over the years; however what separates the extraordinary books from the appalling books, is the author's ability to visually and emotionally move their readers. In order to establish a connection to the audience, an author must understand human experience. In Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, two narratives are used, one of an older Jacob, and one of a younger Jacob. This choice is made by the author to help the reader fully comprehend the circle of life. Everyone succumbs to age sooner or later, and while many books conclude with the narrator finding contentment at an early age, this is not the case in reality. In the real world, most struggle to achieve fulfillment, by creating an elderly Jacob, in this case it does not necessarily mean that a live has been fulfilled. The old aged are sometimes just as clueless as the young. Sara Gruen discloses that the old are not very different from the young; in many cases the old are still playing the game against the formidable opponent of life. We are introduced to an eager and naГЇve Jacob in the initial stages of the novel. However, Jacob is introduced to the cruelties of the world all too suddenly, when the death of his parents is abruptly thrust upon him. It states, "I snap out of my stupor. There are people on that train. It matters not a whit where it's going because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order to do this, people exercise their bodies along with their minds. However, overly exercising can lead to consequences. As a result, a balance needs to be met. When displaying too many hard core views, the mixture of a healthy mind and a healthy body disappears. Therefore, it is very important to obtain a balance with strict rules along with some imagination. When looking at facts, it is always one sided, but when using an imagination, the possibilities become endless and can be looked upon as positive. In the novel Hard Times, there are characters that display a strict view on facts rather than imagination. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another example of how Thomas Gradgrind's teachings have failed is Louisa. Louisa sacrifices herself as a wife to Josiah Bounderby in order to give Tom more freedom and to make Thomas Gradgrind happy. Ultimately, she is very unhappy and just a way to get her family into Josiah Bounderby's business. As a result of two poor outcomes of factual learning failures, it is safe to conclude that the teachings of Thomas Gradgrind are at fault. Thomas Gradgrind is extremely strict with the rules and cannot stray from his set standards. However, Josiah Bounderby says that education is "to be tumbled out of doors, necks and crops and out upon the shortest allowance of everything except blows" (Dickens 314). It is evident to say that Josiah Bounderby sees a strict education as unnecessary and does not think it should exist. Josiah Bounderby owns a bank and a factory and has a good living. He has high political standards and is considered a very powerful man. Most people look up to Josiah Bounderby with high regard since he is wealthy. Due to his "self made" lies, he thinks ... Nova, a teenage girl with long black hair and skin of a dark complexion, had a terrible headache. While slowly getting up to examine her environs, she realizes she was in the middle of what seemed to be an abandoned circus tent. It featured innumerable lifeless aspects to the point it didn't look like a circus anymore. There were few rusted metal chairs and leftover rubbage. The weather–beaten tent was ridden with holes and it reeked of mold. There was one more item to inspect, a rope. She walks over to the rope and pulls it out of curiosity. Due to this action, the curtain behind her rose, revealing an empty stage. Suddenly, the lights went out and when they came back on she was in the center of the tent once more; the only nuance was the man standing on the stage. "Ladies and Gentlemen, it is time for a special performance, "Blink!" the man on stage announces. His voice was jaunty and clear. He was dressed in motley of dark colored raggedy clothes. Abruptly, a sequence of questions shot out of Nova's mouth. "Where am I? Who are you?" and as her last unanswered question shot out, the lights went out. "Why am I here?" she roared out. • 7. A Persuasive Essay : Animals Deserve Freedom Too Animals Deserve Freedom Too Animal circuses should be banned and illegal throughout the world. Animals in the circus do not receive proper care and treatment. They are beaten and forced to learn tricks and stunts against their will. Also, animals held in captivity do not learn specialized skills they instinctively pick up in the wild. Once a circus animal relies on humans for food and help, they will never be able to survive in the wild due to their dependency on humans. Many animals in the circus were pulled away from their mothers at a young age. These animals deserve to be with their families in their natural habitats not in cages, forced to perform tricks for human enjoyment. The use of animals in circuses is not morally correct and should be stopped. Mistreatment and abuse is one of the main reasons animals should not be allowed in circuses. People who work in the circus use various methods to get animals to cooperate. Animals can potentially be beaten, harassed or neglected until they do what the circus workers want them to do. Some specific methods used by the circus include: whips, tight collars, muzzles, and electric prods (Circuses). A prime example is the organization, Cole Bros Circus. They have been cited multiple times by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for animal welfare violations. A former elephant trainer testified in court and said when Pete, the elephant did not perform her act properly, she was taken to the tent and laid down, and then five trainers ... • 8. The Ethical Treatment Of Circus Animals The circus can be dated back to as far as 1782 in Paris, France where people came to enjoy family friendly entertainment. The circus has always included tricks and stunts by not only people but also highly trained animals. For decades now, people have considered the treatment of animal performances in the circus cruel and unjust. Protesters argue that animals are stripped from their native lands and forced to preform shows, meanwhile being treated harshly and abused by the human circus performers. Tigers, elephants, and other animals are trained and forced to entertain audiences by standing on their heads, jumping through hoops, and doing balance tricks. Spectators have considered this a spiteful treatment of animals, for it is often physically challenging and frightening to the animal performers. There have been reports of circus trainers abusing animal performers with whips, muzzles, and other painful tools. Today, protestors are fighting for animal's rights and against the use of animals in circuses'. Protesters are objecting to animal circus performers, purely because of the belief that these animals are being forced to do impossible stunts, are in confined areas, and are abused with painful tools. One of the biggest frustrations of protesters is the fact that circus animals are held in constant confinement. • 9. Symbolism In The Flying Circus, By Susan Crandall The Flying Circus, by Susan Crandall, is set in the early 1920's. The story follows Henry Schuler, a boy on the run, who meets Gil and Cora, two other people with rough pasts. Together, the three of them, along with an old plane and cute dog named Mercury, form Mercury's Daredevils. This flying circus act brings the trio all across the country, but each of the characters have a secret that could destroy the makeshift family they've become. Throughout the novel, you see the three of them torn apart and brought together as they deal with conflicts ranging from plane safety and love triangles, to kidnapping and murder. My favorite passage in the book is, "Disaster lived by its own rules. Most times it crept up from behind, wiping out everything... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the story develops in The Flying Circus, the diction being used in the story changes. All of the characters seem to have a greater and more optimistic outlook on life by the end of the novel, which is apparent through the words chosen to describe their emotions and actions. In the beginning, most of the word usage describes the loss, pain, and fear that Henry is feeling. An example of the gloomy and dark tone that is present at the beginning of the story is when the author states, "his insides were full of slithering black snakes of dread" (Crandall, p.182). But, as the story progresses, there is a noticeable change in tone, as Henry becomes more hopeful about his future as opposed to merely running from his past. Even with small things such as descriptions or observations, the tone seems lighter by the end of the story, just as Henry continues to build a fulfilling life and supportive family around him. This helps develop the theme that a sense of belonging can be discovered in the most unlikely places, as you wouldn't expect that Henry could achieve such prosperity based on his situation at the beginning of the novel. In the end, though, he finds a sense of belonging in the family that Mercury's Daredevils ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks, and other tools used during circus acts are reminders that the animals are being forced to perform. Did you impatiently wait for the animals to come up in circus and to amaze you with those performances? If yes was your answer, you were definitely not alone. There were 330 other people out of 550 respondents who enjoyed the animal performances best, as to compare with human ones. However, recently part of the world had been shocked with the video footage of animals cruelty in an infamous circus. This had arisen a controversy of whether we should use animals in circus or not. These feelings are basically created by regular excessive trainings. Tools, including bull hook, electric pads, metal rods, and drugs, are used simultaneously in the training sessions. Elephants, despite their thick skins, are very sensitive in several parts, particularly under their chins, behind their ears, and around their eyes. Trainers would use these weaknesses, striking them with pointed bull hook, as their aces to control the elephants. Teeth of the animals are plunged with hammer, reducing the risks of trainers being bitten and make them more manageable. Drugs are injected and given to some of the animals, particularly to alter their moods and to stabilize them in desirable conditions. Carry forward with the effects of the training, animals are exposed to some effects, both physiologically and psychologically. On physiological effects, each of the animals requires its own unique and specific needs for diet, health, veterinary care, and social interaction. • 13. Animal Cruelty In The Circus The Circus and The Animal Cruelty It Entails The circus can be dated back to as far as 1782 in Paris, France, where people came to enjoy family friendly entertainment. The circus has always included tricks and stunts by not only people, but also highly trained animals. One of the biggest frustrations of the protesters is the fact that circus animals are held in constant confinement. • 19. Theme Of Greed In Water For Elephants Greed plays a predominant role throughout Water For Elephants. Many characters seemed to have embodied a very greedy nature during this time. Although, one cannot blame such characters for their nature because if you take into account the era they lived in, they quite possibly had no other choice but to be greedy. Although, when I think of greed I don't just think of it as a physical way desire for money and materialistic needs but also as a selfish mindset. I also think that the author, Sara Gruen, made a comprehensible point of identifying greed as a main cause of the downfall of many characters and the circus itself. August claimed, " ...we will now have sixty–four working men sleeping under wagons on the flats", which means all these working men will have to sleep in uncomfortable ways just because Uncle Al decided that Rosie was more important (Gruen 131). This once again shows how greedy and unsympathetic Uncle Al truly is to those around him. In the matter of emotional greediness, I observed that August carried a great amount of this trait. August is a very commanding and rude person, he always managed to manipulate others into thinking and doing what he wanted so he could be happy. I also observed that he was very greedy in a sense when it came to Marlena. He was completely overprotective of her and made sure he bought her as many materialistic things as she wanted in order to make up for his mistakes. An instance of this would be in chapter 17 when August buys Marlena jewellry in order to make up for having her perform with Rosie before the act was polished (Gruen 233). But to truly understand its rise and fall, first one must understand what vaudeville is. Vaudeville was a theatrical genre of entertainment that was popular in the United States from the early 1880s until the mid 1930s. Each performance consisted of a series of unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill. Types of acts included classical musicians, dancers, comedians, trained animals, magicians, impersonators, acrobats, illustrated songs, jugglers, scenes from plays, athletes, lecturing celebrities, and movies. Although vaudeville seemed to be a long standing staple in our society, like all good things, it must come to an end. the decline and death of vaudeville appears certain, clear and inevitable. From the performers point of view, there was no perspective other than the "here and now" of their lives. Each day seemed to differ little from the previous, and speculation about the future was, as ever, informed by hear say and past experience. As an array of specialty acts, vaudeville was an enterprise without name that, over many years, could be found in the marketplaces of Asia and Europe. It eventually spread around the world to the farthest corners of Australia and Africa. Performers worked when and where they could, quite often in undesired locations. A certain clichГ© attached to performing in bed and breakfast's, saloons and public houses after their owners added stages and audience pits set apart from the tavern. It soon became quite taxing for performers to not only live the same shows everyday, but to move on and find other work after they were no longer needed in vaudeville shows. Still, this was not the only reason for the demise of vaudeville, although it played a large part. The largest contributing factor was the invention of the motion picture in the 1930's. There was no longer a need for people to be entertained by a comical, musical, circus style side show. Now they found a more intimate and fascinating way of enjoying a performance. The first ... Should Animals Be Banned Of Animals Research As a young child, you would probably remember your parents taking you to the circus where you witnessed all your favourite animals preforming their tricks. As an innocent child you would not have thought about what happens behind the scenes or the preparation these animals experience before performing on stage. The reality is that animals are trained by fear, suffering and disrespect, are kept in tiny cages where they can barely move around and they travel most of their life time in severe temperatures which they are not used to in their natural habitat. I strongly believe that circuses which make animals perform should be banned. "Sink that hook into em ... when you hear that screaming, then you know you've got their attention!" Feet of elephants are chained because of their size otherwise they might escape. How Are They Trained? Animals in the circus do not willingly stand on their heads, with two legs, on balls, jump through rings on fire or ride bicycles. Animals don't normally do these useless acts in the wild or in their habitats. Did you know that tigers are terrified of fire, but they would rather jump through it on rings than face the consequences of the trainers? • 39. Behind The Big Top Speech Ashley Timms Persuasive Speech Riker April 14, 2015 Behind the Big Top I'm sure the majority of you have been to a circus. Can you take a moment with me and let's imagine watching the acrobats walking the tight rope high above the ring? And how exciting was it as a child to witness a tiger with gigantic teeth jump through a flaming hoop? Or to hold your breath while a bear somehow rides a bike just like you and I. And do you remember watching an enormous elephant do a head stand? All that stuff is pretty cool, right? But what we don't realize as young children or even as close minded adults is the suffering that those animals really endure. Bears, elephants, tigers, and other animals do not voluntarily ride bicycles and stand on their heads and all these other nonsense tricks; they preform them because they are afraid of what the consequences will be if they choose not to, because as every Ring Leader says, "The show must go on".... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are taken away from their environment and forced on the road. They spend the majority of their life, while not preforming, in cramped unnatural living conditions and traveling most of the year in a boxcar or cage, chained up, living in their own waste. Not only do these animals suffer a great deal of psychological pain from the forced environment and those "spotlight" moments, but they also suffer a significant amount of physical pain as ... • 40. Revulsion In Tod Browning's Freaks With figurative eye of newt and toe of frog, Tod Browning's Freaks stirs a grotesque, boiling caldron of Terror, Horror, and Revulsion within the viewer. Perpetually flinging itself between these three genres of fear, in an artful dance of death, Browning splices, mutates, and combines images to create a Frankenstein's Monster of conjoined dread and trepidation. Freaks is not a documentary and does not try to resolve or rectify the dilemma between Good and Evil, Humans and Monsters; or Us vs. Them; and certainly it is not a film promoting "Freaks, they're just like us!" Instead, I believe, Browning's intention is to purposely churn a disturbing witches' brew of anaerobic muck, primordial grime, and poisoned entrails that we've kept buried ... Did Bozo and Venus go through this initiation? The fact that we do not see Bozo and Venus become "one of them" also supports the notion that while we are supposed to treat the freaks as we would any other person, we can never truly be the same, and there will always be something that separates us from ...
