Why is important to study the media, rather than simply...
The media is a dynamic entity inherent in society that is both powerful and important. It
demonstrates this by playing a vital role in the development of a person 's perspective on political,
economic and socio–cultural issues. This consequently helps to shape individuals ' viewpoints of the
world and define their lives through the interpretation of media texts. (Newman, 2004). Bazalgette
supported Newman 's point by stating "Media studies open up your understanding of how things
work, how people become informed – or misinformed – and how the myths and ideologies that
govern all our lives are created and sustained." (Bazalgette, 2000, pp.14). Thus, the focus of this
essay will be on these aspects; how the theory of ideology and ... Show more content on

The media messages are no longer fixated with only one prevailing meaning imposed on by the
authoritative figures. (Schirato & Yell, 2000). Now, not only are there multiple angles to analyze and
interpret media texts, the sheer volume of different messages transmitted by media forms is
astounding. Perhaps even more crucial to this whole analysis is that the public of today has become
more knowledgeable, informed and engaging in participation. They are genuinely interested in what
is portrayed before them and may even have a personal stake in the many issues which the media
disseminates. People have gotten more independent and complex. Consequently, they become more
analytical.
To make sense of the meaning of the world portrayed to the audience through the media, there needs
to be an engagement in an active work of decoding or interpretation, rather than a passive process of
purely receiving and consuming media messages. (Morley, 1992). As quoted from Alan McKee;"
When we perform textual analysis on a text, we make an educated guess at some of the mostly
likely interpretations that might be made of that text." (McKee, 2001,pp.140). Textual analysis
serves as a critical approach to ignite comprehension of media texts and to uncover possible
interpretation of reality, thereby allowing the construction of

The Definition of Liberty
In New York there is a 250–ton green statue dressed in a robe, holding a torch and tablet with
broken chains at the feet. In 1886, the statue was given to the United States as a gift to symbolize
liberty. The statue is the Statue of Liberty. She is dressed in a robe to symbolize the Roman goddess
of freedom, Libertas. She holds a torch and a tablet to symbolize evoking the law. Many individuals
visit the Statue of Liberty, hoping to understand what liberty means. Liberty has many
interpretations and it is not confined to one meaning. To truly understand the meaning of liberty, an
individual must understand the different types of liberties that are available to Americans. Visiting
the Statue of Liberty will not fully define the concept of what liberty truly means; an individual
must understand the definition, the characteristics, the types, and what liberty is not. First, an
individual needs to understand the definition of liberty. Liberty is derived from the Latin word
"Liber," which means free. Liberty means an individual is able to to live in a society that is free of
oppressive restrictions on how to live ones life, behave, or ones political views. An individual
commonly expresses liberty as: freedom, independence, autonomy, emancipation, and liberation.
Next an individual must understand the characteristics of liberty. There are two characteristics of
liberty, negative liberties and positive liberties. Negative liberties are liberties that do not have

The's Ninth Symphony As Ideological Or Political

ELCS6060 – Hearing Culture(s): Contextualised soundscapes of Europe (1770–1914)
1. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony As Ideological Or Political.
If there is one piece of music that has been discussed and used more than any other is Beethoven's
ninth Symphony. From political meetings to sport matches, Beethoven's piece has been used for all
kinds of purposes and by a wide variety of people, and it always seems to be supporting whatever
ideas whoever uses it has. In this essay I intend to deepen into the various ideological and political
environments in which the piece has been played and to explain why it has been a reference for
several different ideologies and ideas, especially focusing on the 20th Century.
After a seven–year hiatus, including the war, in 1953 a significant number of the most important
politicians in Europe gathered together in West Germany to hear the re–opening of the Bayreuth
Festival. The piece played that night was Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and it doesn't seem to be a
random choice. The last of Beethoven's symphonies seems to appeal to all kinds of people in all
ideologies. The Ode To Joy in the last movement of the piece talks about brotherhood and harmony
among all people. This message can be approached from any point of view and still make it support
one's ideologies. In this occasion it was seen as a celebration of the new unified Western Europe
after the

The Popularization Of The Radical Right Emerges From The
The popularization of the radical right emerges from the domination of social, economic and
political institutions that produces knowledge and information throughout the United Kingdom. This
enables the elite class to obtain the power to systematically erase various narratives that challenge
the suppression and structural control by the state. The rise of thatcherism originated from the
political and economic control propelled by the elite class who imposed a dominant ideology that
sustained the movement of the radical right, in the time of severe political instability from World
War II. The conservative political elites who wanted to sustain the production of capitalism utilized
the economic and political imbalances to promote an agenda ... Show more content on

Thatcher had the ability to alter power relations throughout the country and allow for the
development of authoritarian populism to be prominent and accepted as the dominant political
ideology. Hall contextualizes the development and expansion of the radical right and the ways in
which to understand these political motives. Hall notes how the radical right "has to be understood
in direct relation to alternative political formations attempting to occupy and command the same
space. It is engaged in a struggle for hegemony, within the dominant bloc, against both social
democracy and the moderate wing of it's own party" (Hall, 16). Thus, the radical right is
accumulating massive power during this critical time in the history of the United Kingdom where
social democracy and conservatism are clashing while there is a crisis of capital around the world.
Within this context, the power of the right gained momentum from the socialization of the dominant
narrative through the use of education, media forces and the power of the economy controlling
politics. By normalizing functions of the economic state and the imbalance of political hierarchies,
this enables hegemony to justify the status quo and makes the ruling class invisible as they are
manipulating power structures to benefit themselves as well as to maintain their power and
privilege. Nonetheless, hegemony can be seen as imperial

The History Of The Library Profession
John Ambrosio (2013), reflecting on the history of the library profession, invokes Antonio Gramsci,
who said that a critical understanding of the self also requires the development of an ethical stance,
a set of values, principles, and virtues to guide one's moral conduct (Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328).
Lacking such ethics or praxis, librarians are vulnerable to the dominant political ideology. "The way
to overcome paralysis is the consciousness of what one really is and knowing oneself. It begins with
taking an inventory of our historical formation with determining how we have been secretly
imprinted by history; how our language, thoughts and identities have been informed by various
currents of philosophical thought and cultural practices" (Gramsci in Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). By
examining the history of the library profession – a history that conflates neutrality with equality and
democracy, staffed by a cadre of professionals who trace their beginnings to a theory of "library
economy" – it is easy to imagine how neoliberal ideology found a home in the library.
Many theorists recognize the fact that librarians have the potential to make progressive reforms to
society (Raber, 2003, p. 47), if they would only break free of the "contradictory theoretical
consciousness" and hegemonic norms that hold them back from doing so by suggesting that they
should take no action (Bales & Engle, 2012, p. 22). Louis Althusser (2009), in particular felt that
librarians had a "social and moral

Essay about Political Socialization
Political Socialization
Political socialization begins early on in life and is an ongoing process affecting individuals
throughout. It is how people eventually identify personal beliefs and expectations in American
politics. These political views can include our level of patriotism, faith in the democratic system,
standards by which we hold governing bodies, and opinions regarding public policies. From the
playground to the classroom, the office to the dinner table, much of our lives affect our political
opinions. The most easily identified agents of this are family, schooling, peers, mass media, political
parties and religious influences. Furthermore, these means indoctrinate us in the political society
through four basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As one matures, a certain peer groups reinforce beliefs. Elisabeth Noelle–Neumann, in her book
Spiral of Silence, explains individuals inherently fear social isolation from peers and are
apprehensive of speaking out against group ideas (Patterson 161).
Religion appeals to one's sense of affective socialization by encouraging puritan values and morals
supported by the church. The highly inviolable issue of abortion parleys condemnation by the
Catholic Church against the advocating for women's rights by pro–choice groups. Catholics, while
the strongest advocates, do not stand alone on this issue, as many religions preach abortion is the
murder of a child. By relating a medical procedure to murder, people are emotionally affected, and
instead of thinking rationally, resort to emotions to defend their stance.
Schools are another important faction in delivering affective socialization, but also deliver
instrumental socialization to America's youth. Elementary classroom instruction is generally where
children receive their first concrete lessons on the American political system. Teachers perform the
important civic duty of instructing young Americans in political history, general laws and rights, and
patriotism. Take for example the Pledge of Allegiance, recited across the nation in elementary
classrooms.
Day–in and day–out, children are ingrained with a

How Problematic Is It That TV News Reflects Reality?
How Problematic is it that TV news 'reflects' reality ?
The idea that TV news reflects reality is a reflectionist position, Orgad describes the approach in
which it "assumes that reality is accessible through representation, thus the task of representation is
adequately to reflect pre–existing meaning of the real" (19). So then, why is it problematic that TV
news reflects reality ? News are supposedly unbiased reporters of what is going on in our world at
the moment. However, nowadays it is difficult to see it having an objective view of the world,
especially when one compares various news channels. Firstly "News is negative" (Fiske, 286), and
because it is negative, it give the idea the our reality of the world is also negative, which explains
why it could be seen as reflecting reality. If TV news 'reflects' reality, it is problematic because it
does not in fact reflect it, but gives the illusion it does. I will, in this essay, explain how through
realism, ideology and narration, TV news expresses ideas of truthiness, falsiness, making its own
reality. I first started the essay by looking at a TV news station that would apply to this ... Show

statement made by the Court of Florida is not well known and so most people think that, because it

Within news, they become 'facts'" (184). In this view, realism in TV is not what the viewers sees and
hear, but rather why they hear it and what they don't. Fiske explains that "realism involves a fidelity
both to the physical, sensually perceived details of the world and to the values of the dominant
ideology." (36). By now, is I explains how TV news reflecting reality is problematic as it does not in

`` City Requiem, Calcutt Gender And The Politics Of...
Dreaming of Tombstones (133–188): A Summary and Critical Analysis of Gender Issues in "City
Requiem, Calcutta: Gender and the Politics of Poverty, Volume 10" by Ananya Roy
In Chapter 4, Roy (2008) defines the lack of city planning for the city of Calcutta as a way to
understand the amorphous nature of land boundaries, settlements, and the lives that squatters live in
this city. Shah's story of the dreams of tombstones defines the new ways in which to interpret the
hegemonic discourse of rigid land boundaries. Without an urban plan to develop stable living
quarters in the city, it becomes obvious that the effects of poverty are being integrated into the
chaotic and unorganized methods of housing developments meant for the working poor. This occurs
through the premise of electoral politics that support impoverished populations that leads to an
absence of land records and maps (Roy, 2008, p.138). In this manner, the Desakota Hypothesis
should be re–defined due to the existence of squatter regions throughout Calcutta, which do not fall
into the rigid framework of the urban and rural divide. This aspect of the "communist" politics of
Calcutta is part of the new frontiers of land management, mapping, and boundaries that define the
new squatter culture in India. The hegemonic process of political domination that preserves the
disorganization of working populations and the settlements in which they live.
The foundation for "urban informality" is defined by Roy (2008) as a means

Textual Analysis
Knocked Up Intended for the enjoyment of the present–day youth generation, the 2007 comedy film
Knocked Up deals with more than just comedic issues. Technically introduced as a romantic
comedy, this film serves more to its comedic orientation. With awkward romance and stoner
mannerisms, the laughs are plentiful for the intentional audience of Knocked Up. However, as the
audience is served its fill of laughter, issues are presented that rarely grace the silver screen. The
director of this film, Judd Apatow, utilizes his dominion and influence over the audience to
introduce the dominant ideology of Knocked Up. As seen in his previous film, The 40 Year Old
Virgin, it is evident that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to such themes Knocked Up clearly addresses the issues of casual sex, abortion, and
commitment. Entirely dismissing the option of abortion, undoubtedly, the creators of Knocked Up
purposefully built their story around the responsible, pro–life choice made my Alison. Especially in
today's heated debates for or against abortion, this film institutes itself as an ideological state
apparatus to support pro–life decisions through the positive encouragement illustrated in Alison and
Ben's working relationship. Reaching conclusions about the consequences of casual sex, as
portrayed in this film, the creators chose to make evident these hardships to the audience. With
intentions for the audience to reflect upon, to learn from, and, perhaps, to incorporate such morals
into their own lives, Alison and Ben are made an example of in this film. In the end criticizing Ben's
drug usage, the film may also be said to be opposed to such a drug–induced lifestyle. Despite the
explicitness, Knocked Up demonstrates particularly high thematic value. The thematic value that is
made palpable in Knocked Up is subject to assessment within the historical context surrounding the
production of this film. Through the ideological analysis of Knocked Up, these values and beliefs
are expressed in relation to the present–day, historical context that they are produced within (White
163). According to the supposition that Knocked Up was produced by and for a specific

No Video Games in Education in Pamela Paul's Book Reading,...
Pamela Paul, author of "Reading, Writing and Video Games", demonstrates that video games should
not be part of the education. Paul asserts there is no learning from playing video games and the
education should be the same old fashion. Paul observes the technology in classroom could be
useful for the students. However, she thinks the children should stick on reading and writing for
learning. Finally, Paul prefers to let the children play video games in free time rather than let them
play video games for education. Although, Paul idea of using technology in classroom and
marketing education fun games are true, the idea of letting the children play games that are not
educational in their free time are inaccurate.
First, One implication of Paul treatment of saying there is a place for technology in the classroom is
that a good idea. Paul is surely right about having technology in classroom help show the idea to the
students. Also, teacher used the projector to share notes and show videos to the students. However,
using tablets in the classroom can be easy to do quizzes and exams, and that give the teacher more
time to explain more information to the class. Also considering giving live lecture between two
schools in different country could help exchange more knowledge. Finally, schools should concerns
having more technology in classrooms to help the students learn more and fast for there own

Second, Paul assumes that many of the games marketed as educational aren't as

Ideology Of Punk Rock Ideology
What is punk rock? How many people know the real definition? Punk rocks values, attitude, and
ideologies? Punk rock isn't just a style or a scene but a way of life. It all started in the late 1970s,
originating from the working class angst and frustrations many youth were feeling about the
economic inequality. One of punks' main oppositions was rejection of mainstream, corporate mass
culture and its values. It continued to evolve its ideology of anti–racist and anti–sexist belief
systems as the movement spread from its origins in England and New York to Northern America.
The attitude common in the subculture is the resistance to selling out, which means abandoning
one's values and changing in musical style toward pop to embrace anything that's mainstream
capitalist culture in the exchange for money, status, or power. Punk rocks' common thinking wasn't
only anti–authoritarism, and not selling out but also non–conformity, direct action, and a DIY ethic.
The DIY attitude was pointed towards stepping forward and speaking without any restraint. To fight
with warrior qualities to achieve what you were striving for. The kind of thinking and motives for
punk rock subjects was to not settle for what society made acceptable and standard but to think and
work outside of the box that was holding them in. Punk rock ideologies were expressed though
music and lyrics, punk literature, fashion and visual art. In the beginning punk fashion evolved

Ideology In The Selfish Giant, And The Bling Ring
In both the films we watched in class a large range of ideological perspectives were presented, and
those perspectives were largely based upon their director's views and opinions of the world. The two
films were The Selfish Giant directed by Clio Bernard, and The Bling Ring directed by Sophia
Coppola. Ideology is a very important concept in both films, and it can be defined as a systematic
body of ideas, attitudes, values and perspectives that help shape a particular culture or group within
that culture. Each director uses formal elements, and character values to show specific ideologies. In
The Bling Ring Sophia Coppla focuses on showing the life style that a group of corrupt teens so
desperately wants to live, and why the culture surrounding them is the reason for their corrupt
values. While the film The Selfish Giant highlights issues of working class people, and a culture that
has put children in a position where stealing to support ones family feels like doing the right thing.
Select characters in each film have a fascination with material things, and although they have very
different reasons for them the side effects they experience because of these fascinations are very
similar. In The Bling Ring the characters have a strong desire to acquire the most popular, and
extravagant fashion items; the motivation behind this desire is that they have learned base their self
worth off the things they own and nothing else. One of the main characters in the film Nick talks

Analysis Of The Article ' Reinventing The Veil '
The role of the veil in Persepolis
One of the most controversial topics concerning Muslim women's rights is the idea of the veil. It is
believed by some Muslims that the veil is an Islamic obligation that all Muslim women must adhere
to. But nowadays, the veil can have different meanings that are not necessarily religious. In her
article "Reinventing the Veil," Leila Ahmed addresses some of the different meanings that the veil
can have. Marjane Satrapi explores one of those meanings in her animated autobiography Persepolis
(2008). In Persepolis, Marjane tells the story of her rebellion against the Iranian Islamist regime that
takes over Iran, oppresses women, and forces them to wear the veil. What was interesting to me was
seeing Marjane wear the veil without being oppressed, although she does not believe in it, and is
being forced to wear it. In Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi escapes being a subject to the Iranian Islamist
ideology by establishing her individual identity through transforming the veil from a means of
oppression into a means of feminist rebellion.
In an interview conducted by MovieWeb, Marjane notes that the film isn't political, historical or
sociological. The film simply holds a humanistic message that says that "human beings anywhere is
the same, and they have the right to live" (Satrapi.) This humanistic message is what we see
Marjane fighting for in the film. She is striving to live a normal life, and one of the things that help
her do that is the veil. She

The Republicans Fight For Economic Justice And Security
Ideologies are referred as a set of ideas and values that provides a base for organised political action.
They justify and influence the different theories of society and human nature. Ideologies have a big
impact on policy making. Democratic and Republican parties differ on their ideologies and values,
therefore, impacting policy formulation. Democrats fight for economic justice and security in the
U.S. and global economies. For example, fairness is the core principle for the Congressional
progressive caucus. It also embodies national priorities that are consistent with the values, needs,
and hopes of all our people, not just the powerful and the privilege. They want to invest in America
and create new jobs in the U.S. by building more affordable housing, re–building America's schools
and physical infrastructure, cleaning up our environment, and improving homeland security. They
also want to ensure working families can live above the poverty line and with dignity by raising and
indexing the minimum wage. Whereas the Republicans believe they shouldn't be spending money
on the homeless. Conservatives believe that giving away handouts decreases incentives to work and
that, generally, welfare is the enemy of freedom. As a result, The House bill was an attempt to end
the Housing Trust Fund. Housing is a human right and people should not have to live in poor
conditions. I know someone that was homeless when he was young and that alone affected his

And as another symbol, superheroes are often depicted of as secret identities of people who try to
act normal and yet conceal great power to help others, like for instance Clark Kent and Superman.
Thus seeing the protagonist's obsession with superheroes and his fantasies of exacting justice upon
the bully implies that he too wishes he were like that, that he could use that power stand up and not
be afraid. His superhero persona also has a star–shaped mouth hole evocative of Captain America,
who has stars proudly portrayed all over his outfit that symbolizes truth, justice, and freedom.
Of course, depending on their background, someone in the target age group may develop an
opposing position to some of the scenes depicted. For instance, some may think that the depiction of
bullying is wholly inaccurate and misleading, as actual physical violence is rare and usually only
occurs in private areas. Rather, bullying is usually emotional or verbal, like spreading rumours or
name calling, as that's more subtle and likely to pass under teachers' or other students' radars. As
well, the look the bully gives the protagonist at the end as he leads his crush away is one of
contempt and anger, and one may interpret that as a desire for revenge. If so, one

No Country For Old Men
In the film No Country for Old Men, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, two main themes that were
communicated were changing times and the idea of right and wrong. In this film: a drug deal gone
results in Llewelyn Moss finding a briefcase full of money and running away with it. Chigurh (a
cold blooded murderer) tracks Llewelyn to try and find the money, resulting in guns fired and
people killed. The themes of changing times and right and wrong were sufficiently portrayed
through the techniques of cinematography, non–diegetic voice over, symbolism, dialogue and
lighting, the combination of techniques were also used to portray these themes.
Firstly, the idea of changing times is evident in the beginning scene through the verbal feature of
non–diegetic voice over from Ed Tom Bell. "I was sheriff of this county when I was twenty–five
years old. Hard to believe. Grandfather was a lawman. Father too. Me and him were sheriff at the

help but compare yourself against the old timers. Can't help but wonder how they would have

audience to understand how Ed had grown up through the times when life was simple. Two visual

Neoliberalism And Video Games
What do Neoliberalism and video games have in common? Hegemony, as authors William K.
Carroll, Matthew Greeno, and Robert Cassar claim. Hegemony, a term coined by philosopher
Antonio Gramsci; is defined as "consent that is given by a civil society" (Carroll & Greeno: 122).
Through both articles, hegemony is seen as playing an important role in benefiting the "ruling class"
or the capitalists. It consists of a specific set of ideas which produce an subconscious consensus
among the population of which they struggle to deviate from, due to the consequences which may
arise if they choose to go against policies which support the economic good of the

consent through hegemony continues to sustain neoliberalism. They focus on three specific

globalization or "free trade", and the prevention of democracy intervening with business and
economic growth. They also point out that the goal of neoliberalism is to "restore the optimal

Ideological Conflict And Political Polarization
Ralph Mehitang
Political Science 102
Professor Robinson
November 28, 2016
Polarization In America Ideological Conflict is defined as the mental, verbal, or physical
manifestation of rivalry between people that share opposing world views. Political polarization
relates to when a person's view and stance on a topic, law, issue or particular group of people is
stringently defined by their identification with a particular political party or ideology.
Ever since the 1960s ideological conflict and political polarization have evolved as more factors
have come into play. Examples of important factors that have fueled the evolution of these two
topics are abortion, the death penalty, gay marriage, gun control, illegal immigration, Euthanasia,
drug, war, and religion. These factors are important topics that over the years have caused the
evolution of ideological conflict and political polarization and have caused such divide amongst the
people of America when it comes to their views and stance on specific things. In my opinion I
believe to the utmost degree that ideological conflict and political polarization poses a major threat

Political polarization today is on a completely different level than what it was 30–50 years. It's safe
to say that the 1960s were bad, other than during the the civil war the country had never been so
divided ideologically. The government was facing debates over civil rights

How Power Is Used For Concealing Relations Of Power
Power is usually described as "bad" and is mostly discussed by others about the abuse of power
however this is not true, power can be used to help or protect individuals, which is exactly what the
culture I had observed does. In this essay, I will examine the performances of power that is observed
throughout the ritual ceremony, "chanting" in the Buddhism culture, displaying how the religion is
used for concealing relations of power within this definite culture. Through this examination, I will
use the theories of Karl Marx (religion as ideology) and Antonio Gramsci (hegemony being concept
of power), to support the display of how the power distributes religion. By relating to the definition
of power, I argue that, for the members of this community, 'power' is about ease and security– no
inequality.
The first observation that I had seen to our visit to the "Fo Guang Shan Temple" that stood out to me
the most were the Buddha statues. Inside the shrine, in the prayer room, were five large Buddha
statues and each wall in the room was occupied with images of small carved Buddha's; both female
and male. Along the left side of the five Buddha's, was an image of Male Buddha and on the right–
side was an image of Female Buddha. I also noticed that people took off their shoes at the door
before they entered. When I entered the prayer room, the first entity I had perceived was that the air
was filled with the smell of very strong incense, used for offering the Buddha. People had

The Ideas On Social Reform
yler Skeen
HIST 281

"Lest we forget at least an over–the–shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our
legends, mythology, and history (and who is to know where mythology leaves off and history begins
– or which is which), the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did
it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom– Lucifer" (Alinsky, Personal
Acknowledgement). Saul Alinsky was a social reformer during the Cold War era in American
History. He published Rules For Radicals in 1971. As the name implies, the manifesto contains
some radical ideas on social reform. The manifesto outlines the ethics, tactics and philosophy of
how to successfully shift power from the "Haves" to the "Have–nots." Alinsky created a
controversial body of propaganda in the way he challenges core moral values of American beliefs
for the time period such as Capitalism and the class system. He further challenges American beliefs
by questioning the foundational ideologies of Americans such as the extent of equality, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness. To argue that Saul Alinsky's Rules For Radicals does not have radical
ideals is a misconception as the document challenges the class system created by inequality,
however, Saul Alinsky's vision in Rules For Radicals ethics, tactics and philosophy is represented by
ideals of equality, liberty and justice making the manifesto a continuum of traditional American
ideals fueled by the idea

Essay on Analysis of Dominant Ideology in Various Media Texts
Stuart Hall has posited that the concepts of individual dream states can be brought on a macroscopic
scale to media text. In particular, "nightmares" of individuals, can be related to the semiological
analysis of a given media text in relation to dominant ideology and culture in general. His main
points in this are twofold, first is to point out that the more horrible and "nightmarish" a media
scenario (i.e. story) is, the more difficult it is to de–construct the ideological markers that serve as
the basis for the text. The second, and perhaps more important, is that the ideological representation
in the nightmare represents a repressed wish of society and has increased threat to the dominant
class, or the bourgeois.
For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twin peaks contains the most un–resolvable of conflicts in the conflict between order, and disorder.
In this it stands in opposition to Fisk's argument that a television text must have multiple resolutions
to conflict, to allow for the hegemonically oppressed sub–groups in the audience to find their own
meanings and thus assert their unique social identity. A media text will of course be polysemic,
however by de–construction, one can only find meanings one is predisposed to find due to the
dominant ideology one is part of. Fisk indeed seems to assert the weakness in his essay of what
"Disorder..." focuses on. It is those departures from order and dominance toward chaos that create
discomfort, and surprise. This serves to illustrate those norms and cultural expectations which are in
place, and are necessary to associate meaning. It is in this where Fisk fails in that "polysemy" in fact
only illustrates that Dominant ideology is present, and inescapable. With his focus on "heteroglot"
language, it argues for the inescapable nature of hegemonic control. Different tools of hegemony
such as legitimate language, socioeconomic status, education, etc. are all factors that influence the
totality of signifiers and communication that create "heteroglot" language. In this, "disorder" is a

Poetry Analysis 'Thanks' By Yusef Kounyakaa

Poetry Essay Beauty is a subjective idea that focuses on the characteristics preferable to a single
species that gives an advantage over another and at the cost of another species survival. Humans
have created astounding empires with beautiful cities and monuments because they were the most
progressive species that are able to do so because of their capacity for violence. Some empires fear
for their survival, so they must eliminate any threat whether it be humans or other animals. The
poem, "Thanks" by Yusef Komunyakaa, it symbolizes how humans can become single minded only
driven by their own personal desires at the sake of anyone else. Humans naturally commit ugly
atrocities to progress their own beauty, or at least idea of, and they instinctively oppose nature
because mankind is the dark side of nature. The poem describes the life of a man during the Vietnam
War, a conflict involving the United States and local Vietnamese who supported a communist
regime, and how unexplainable sporadic events saved his life. He gives thanks to an unknown force
that saves his life multiple times throughout his tour in Vietnam because the instances are what
some people consider luck and others and act of a higher being or deity. Throughout the poem he
expresses his gratitude towards the entity that watches over him but later he questions the existence
of a god because why would one allow there to be a war in the first place and then send

Argumentative Essay On No Platforming
No platforming entails denying a person or organization a platform to spread their ideologies due to
them conflicting the norms in society. No platforming is a strategy used by activists in order to
protest their disagreement with contradictory groups. With the rise of social justice prevalent in our
society, it targets people who are seen as violent or dangerous to the public, and revoke their
platform. Often, the argument of no platforming is rebutted with the notion of free speech, which
has value because once all ideas are shared, they can either be exposed as wrong, but if not they
could be strengthened through debate. Through this essay, it will acknowledge both arguments
present in the video with supporting evidence from the speakers, and discuss whether the article was
convincing or not. Firstly, through the debate each team delivered why or why not they agree with
the notion of no platforming. The favours of no platforming side argue that the problem with free
speech is that speech is never totally free, and there is no neutral ground where people can debate
freely. The first speaker uses the example of Germaine Greer at Cardiff University, and how there
was a petition to remove her as a speaker due to her hate speech towards transgender women. In the
end, their petition was revoked and she was given a platform to spread her controversial views,
containing denying transgender women right to exist on their own terms. The right to free speech, is
only the right to

Why Do Americans Perceive Their Culture As Egalitarian,...
1. Why do Americans perceive their culture as egalitarian, and their society as basically fair and
equal? Is this consistent with reality? Explain.
American perceive their culture to be far because the media hides the gross inequities from the
public until they feel it is important to discuss. However, even when the media relays the messages
they are obscured from the actual truth. So, the American people think their culture is fear and
equal, but it is just an illusion created by the media.
2. How do the media play role in perpetuating inequality?
The media shapes the way Americans see our society, but it's what goes unreported that should
worry the American people. For instead, the poor and the poverty they face is the biggest
misconception portrayed by the media. The media dehumanizes the poor and makes them into
statistics or averages, rather than the people and children who are suffering to survive. Also, when
the poor are discussed they are discussed through the eyes of a middle–class person which portrays
the poor like nuisance or a hassle. They blame the poor for being victims of poverty, claiming they
must have brought it on themselves. While, people read or listen to the media their perception of
others are shaped upon the tone and emotions coming from the reporter. The American people are
oblivious to the something falsely represented stories or headlines, they tend to believe the media no
matter if the information is true or false.
3. How does the media operate as an ideological tool of the rich? Explain
The article states, how media is operated by the upper class, which gives them power over the
American people and the way American's proceed things. The wealth media operators use their
power to shape our social class structure, by only telling us things to further help them. They put a
bad taste in your mouth for welfare and convince us to resent the people below us for all America's
problems. Nevertheless, they are the elite privilege, who act as a ruling government with the media
being their choice of weapon against the less fortune it.

is constructed as a subject by the institutions of modern life; the unique individual is always defined
by the generalized social categories of the modern state" (Nealon & Searls Giroux 44). Furthermore,
this act of interpellation in the ad directs readers to different messages and connotations into which

The Pros And Cons Of Postmodernism
Postmodernism is a loose–umbrella term that is used to describe a myriad of ideologies which
originated after the modern era. It is that complex whole of perspectives which reject the core
principles of modern( and enlightenment) thought. It stretches its ideological framework into
various fields of knowledge which include–but are not limited to–Science, Economics, Politics, and
Philosophy. The central claim of Postmodernism is that there is no one over–raiding metanarrative.
In other words, there is no such thing as an absolute truth, nor is there such a thing as objectivity.
Thus, reality becomes a matrix of perception which changes based on the interpretation upon which
it was forged. Hence, Jean–Francois Lyotard– a French philosopher–defined ... Show more content

Postmodernists argue that because modern science was developed by a group of people which were
ensconced in a European culture, they carried their subjective biases and prejudices into the
scientific inquiry. By this logic, science does not seem like an objective method through which to
investigate the world, but rather an enterprise that serve to adhere to a particular socio–political
agenda. To elaborate, they believe that science, in its contemporary state, does not produce objective
facts, but rather it offers a limited manner through which to cultivate the world. Specifically, a
white–masculine–elite view of the world. This means that new types of epistemologies–such as the
feminist epistemology–should be introduced to paint the full picture of reality. Thus, science seems
to offer a one–dimensional narrative that needs the perspectives of so–called marginalized,
oppressed groups to be complete. This line of reasoning is intrinsically flawed for a multitude of
reasons. First

The Help Movie Analysis
In the movie The Help, there are many characters portrayed and all of them follow their own set of
motives to reach their goals. The movie, to me, appears to be the cliche white shaming movie, and
the creators are obviously left wing and want to preach the left wing status and show the struggles
we no longer face. Before I get into my character and categories I would like to discuss Left and
Right Wing. Left Wing typically believes that the government should have the utmost power and
they are usually liberals, however, the Right Wing thinks the government should have little to no
power and that personal goals and power should be the top priority, these are what we usually call
conservatives. The character who I will be analyzing is Hilly Holbrook. Very quickly into the
introduction of Hilly, she is portrayed as the "bad guy" or villian of the film because again, this is a
left wing film and Hilly is very clearly right wing. Like most characters in The Help, you can
generally see their intended values based on the color of clothing they are wearing, usually red,
white, or blue. Hilly constantly wears red a color commonly associated with the right wing, which
continually paints her such throughout the film. The bipolar categories of her ideology are
International vs. Nationalistic, Democratic vs. Hierarchical, and Insiders vs. Outsiders. My first
category in Hilly's ideology is International vs. Nationalistic. The international outlook is more
characteristic of left wing ideology. It tends to promote looking outward and trying to govern, and
care for the entire world and its peoples through aid or diplomacy. Also frequently sees everyone as
equals. This makes the nationalistic approach, right wing. Nationalist are strongly patriotic and see
their nation as the best, they want to focus on making their people better and let others find their
own path, they also view others as lessers, not because they don't see them as equal but because
some people work harder and therefore are more equal than others. I'm putting Hilly in the
nationalistic group because her outlook on other people and their nations. During one scene a maid

The Ideological Ambiguity Within The Media Essay
Everyone within a society has his or her own individual concerns in life. Some people, however, are
occasionally looked down more by others, depending on if their problems are seriously destructive
to the society or not. An often time in doing so, these people are manipulated into a dominant
ideology which represents arguments about whether things are of optimistic or pessimistic standards
in our civilization. This set of central principles, ideology, produces particular manners and offer
ethical regulations by which one's dealings can be evaluated. In fact, the media production business

The article "The White of Their Eyes: Racist Ideologies and the Media," written by Stuart Hall, Hall
brings an attention to the perception of ideological ambiguity though discovering the typical mass
media's function of establishing racial inequities, such as that the community accepts differential
behaviors of people within the society as common sense. He first starts on describing ideology as a
term that does not consist of individual thoughts, yet assembly of different basics that direct to a
certain judgment or perception. As said by Hall, the representation of race in the mass media builds
the positive and negative consequences of ideology by manufacturing and transforming the
ideologies. This ideological ambiguity is often shaped when the mass media puts up a meaning of
what race is for the audiences, what significance the images of race conveys, and how the issue of
race is supposed to be recognized. In a straightforward phrase, mass media organizes our world as
regards to racial groups; placing people into categories based upon their physical appearances and
defined concepts that have been generally raised after a while. On the other hand, what is really
striking about Hall's argument on the ideological ambiguity is that the importance of these
conventional ideas of race cannot be compared with the ground–breaking portrays of traditional
form of race for which context is more appreciated or not in

The American Dream
The American Dream is an American ideology, in which everyone in the U.S. is able to reach with
hardworking and dedication, and has been interrogated into our politics, economy, and social
system. Some want to achieve economic prosperity, some just want religious freedom, some simply
want to give their children a better chance at life than they had themselves, and others have different
views on the American Dream. However, because the Dream has been integrated into our political,
economical, and social systems so deeply, it is nearly impossible for many to reach the Dream. This
is especially true when you input factors such as gender, age, and, race. The American Dream has
also changed, as many younger citizens no longer want to be millionaires and much rather be able to
pay off student debts. In order the give a full analysis of the American Dream, an in depth look into
the political, economical, and social aspects of it must be done, and this is because all three aspects
are intertwined together.
Politically, as John Archer, a historian and professor at the University of Minnesota, stated, "The
American dream has long been bound up with America's politics and political ideology, and for the
most part the relationship has been harmonious" And yes, for the most part, they have been

Bartleby the Scrivener
Question 1: From a Marxist perspective, Herman Melville's story "Bartleby the Scrivener" can be
interpreted as a story proving that capitalism makes it unnecessarily difficult for its subjects to
succeed, forcibly enslaves its subjects to its system, rids its subjects of aspirations and purpose due
to the impossibility for creativity, and deceives its subjects into believing that money can alleviate
emotional issues.
Because both Bartleby and the narrator lose their professions during the course of their lives despite
their desire to make an adequate living, the story exposes capitalism's apathetic and harsh treatment
of its subjects. Towards the end of the story, we learn that "Bartleby had been a subordinate clerk in
the Dead Letter Office at Washington, from which he had been suddenly removed by a change in the
administration" (American Literature). Bartleby, a capitalist subject who, at the beginning of the
story, eagerly attends to his duties, was stripped of his job simply because of a new administration.
Melville reveals how capitalism as an ideology essentially chews its subjects up only to leave the
majority of them without high–paying positions; it is an ideology that perpetuates the failure of
many while advantaging few. Even the narrator, a supposedly astute Wall Street lawyer, loses one of
his professions before Bartleby's entrance into his life: "I consider the sudden and violent abrogation
of the office of Master of Chancery, by the new Constitution, as a

The Use Of Diffusion Between Cultural Participation...
Established in 1944 by Donald Watson, modern–day veganism has become an increasingly popular
lifestyle through recent decades. Veganism is a very strict diet. It involves a strong commitment and
can also restrict certain fashion statements in some way or form. Vegans avoid any consumption of
any [animal related food or fabric that has been fabricated with animal skin]. Although many, do not
see the vegan choice as a reasonable way to a healthy living, many Americans have seen their diet
change being influenced by popular artists, such as Beyoncé, who endorse the idea of veganism. As
mentioned by Elizabeth Cherry and her concept of the diffusion between cultural participation
function and support veganism, this paper will be demonstrate how the music industry has inclined
many Americans to dramatically transition their diet as omnivores to vegans. Cherry believes that
there are two groups of vegans; "those in the punk subculture and those who were not – and
investigates how they defined and practiced veganism differently"(Cherry 1). Becoming a vegan
punk according to Cherry, is seen to "describe a state of mind and a willingness to change society
more than a sartorial display, this is accomplished through a DIY ethic, characterized by
independent bands, record labels, and book presses, as well as a politically progressive way of
living"(Cherry 5). With this in mind the reader can infer that veganism can be tied in with the
modern hipster and the industrial musical culture.

Essay on The Dictators
The twentieth century, unlike any other before it, saw dramatic changes in many different areas such
as science, technology, politics, religion, and society. One of the most important and definitely the
most obvious change is the increasing deadliness of war. Granted, people have died in wars from the
very beginning, but in the twentieth century wars began to generate much higher body counts both
among the contending armies and among civilian populations, the latter being the most drastic
change in number of casualties. Similarly, in the twentieth century, two opposing dictatorships
arose. Although both had many similarities, they represented the culmination of two different
political ideologies that had flourished in Europe since the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Richard Overy's stunningly detailed and well–crafted study of this dichotomy, The Dictators,
illuminates it for even the uninitiated in the world of European or Global History. One particular
aspect that clearly illustrates both the similarities and the differences is the ideological goals of each
regime. Despite the fact that they were on two opposite sides of the political spectrum, the
similarities between the two show that they may not have been as opposite has they appear. One of
the goals was the creation of a utopian society. "The social vision at the heart of both dictatorships
was utopian in a very literal sense. Like the construction of Thomas More's ideal city, both pursued
the perfect society by compelling their subjects to struggle against the imperfect present" (Overy
229). The precise type of utopian society, however, was a major point of distinction. Hitler sought to
form a nationalist Germany in which everything, from the economy to the church, was subordinate
to the needs of the state. "'The state must act,' wrote Hitler, 'as a guardian of a millennial future in
the face of which the wishes and selfishness of the individual must appear as nothing and submit'"
(Overy 229). Stalin, on the other hand, sought to follow the ideals of Marx and form the ideal
Marxist–Leninist state. "The socialist project under Stalin was built on the idea of struggle against
the surviving elements of class selfishness and the eventual triumph of a

Political Correctness Essay
Political Correctness
Political correctness is a political ideology, nothing more. I believe political correctness is a political
ideology and it cannot be correct unless it is linked to genuine transformation. First, I will examine
the origins of political correctness to try to get a clear understanding of what this movement is.
Second, I will show you that political correctness is political and how it became a political ideology.
Lastly, I shall discuss why this ideology does not work.
Political correctness is cultural Marxism. Marx, as cited in Introduction to Social Science course
guide, believed that if people were left to work on their own they would be more efficient. He had
an ideological belief that laborers could actually want ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some members moved into government such as Herbert Marcuse who was the predecessor to the
CIA and other members move into Hollywood.
These beginnings of political correctness would mean very little to us today if it weren't for the
student rebellions in the mid 1960 's .The students as Lind notes read the book that Marcuse writes,
"Eros and Civilization". The students do not have to read lots of heavy Marxism and Marcuse tells
them everything they want to hear. Such as," Do your own thing"," If it feels good do it" and "you
never have to go to work". Marcuse was also the man who created the phrase "make love not war".
Political correctness arrived at American Universities.
Therefore, political correctness's true origins have been forgotten and so people have forgotten what
political correctness really is.
"Terms such as politically correct thus have a hidden history, uncovering which is dependent both
on the accurate recollection of those who were there," (Cameron, 1995,78).
Now we know where political correctness originated but in order to understand political correctness
as a political ideology we have to first look at what politics is and second what an ideology is.
Politics is about the distribution of power. In the Introduction to Social Science course guide it is
stated that, "politics can be anywhere". Therefore, politics is in the language we speak. Power is the

magazines I will be examining are; teenage with the magazine 'Sneak,' twenty something's with the

'Glamour' is aimed mainly at late teens to late twenties. When flicking through the magazine, I
noticed that there was more text and adverts. This reflects how the age–group has more time and
disposable income. Also, 'Glamour' was the most expensive magazine, being £1.90 and included a
website, (see figure 2,) which again indicates a higher disposable income and extra time. The front
cover yet again includes an hourglass shaped celebrity, but she is older, although she still conforms
to the dominant ideology for a young female. The magazine includes the latest fashion and make–up
styles, but on a much larger scale when compared to 'Sneak.' "MASSIVE FASHION SPECIAL:
1322 HOT NEW LOOKS." It again includes problem pages, but the problems are mainly on
lifestyle or sex, instead of dating. 'Glamour' also advertises to the stereotypical women using its
front page with the advert; "20% off SHOES At Faith for every reader." Magazines can use this
effectively, because it represents the expectations reflected by society and the media.
'Women's Own' is mostly aimed at middle aged housewives, although older people do read it,
because it would give them a chance of extended youth. The front cover for the magazine, (see
figure 3,) is dramatically different. It has older soap celebrities, who some women would be able to
relate to. The people on the cover are less bothered about

No More Miss America By Robin Morgan Essay
Many radical feminist groups such as the New York Radical Women group (NYRF) gathered
together as The Women Liberation Movement to protest against the deep–rooted conception of a
"traditional woman" in the United States during the Second Wave Feminism (1960s–1990s). The
Women Liberation Movement was a demonstration of challenging society's common sense, or
hegemony, which was nurtured by the dominant ideology which in this case was a gender hierarchy
where men were believed to be superior to women. The primary source "No More Miss America"
by Robin Morgan describes her experiences as a participant of the NYRF protesting against the
Miss American Pageant in Atlantic City on September 7th 1968. The NYRF group discussed ten
points of how the Miss American Pageant promoted the "traditional woman" stereotype based on
racial beauty standards, submissiveness, and inferiority to men. The NYRF protest critiqued both
the representation side of the behavioral expectation of "traditional women" as well as the structural
side of the obstacles that women faced within social institutions such as labor and educational
opportunities. With the representative side "traditional women" promoted by the Miss American
Pageant, it reinforced women's submissive and sexist inferiority and racial beauty criteria within the
structural side to be approval by men. However, there was intersectionality in the structural
obstacles and representation side extending the social discrimination based on

Social And Political Views Of Democracy
Democracy offers people the chance to be involved citizens rather than unreceptive subordinates.
However, this right doesn't come unchallenged. Citizens are required to assess a broad range of
political subjects (such as candidates, parties, and policies) and then combine and simplify their
likings in a way that allows them to choose on voting decisions. So, how are these challenges met?
In the United States, some citizens are conservative Republics, some are liberal Democrats, and
others fall in between or outside the two. Recent studies have proposed that these recognitions play
an important part in voting behavior and political perception. Recently, however, more studies have
accumulated advocating for two meager assumptions in regards to this study: that
liberal/conservative identifications are bipolar in meaning and that underlying this bipolarity is
cognitive meaning based on political issues (Conover, Feldman, 265). These variances in political
positions are called political attitudes, and fall on a spectrum between extremely liberal and
extremely conservative. Broadly speaking, this spectrum distinguishes what someone believes about
social issues and governments role in society. These beliefs are formed by a variation of aspects,
which can include family, gender, religion, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and region. Even
things like behavior, core ideals and values, and ideology can affect people's political attitudes.
However, these opinions are not set in

Free-Market Capitalism And Communism
The current migrant crisis, which has arisen from civil unrest, climate change and globalization, is a
driving political force in Europe. It has sparked a wide variety of responses among political parties
and citizens alike. These responses have managed to clearly demonstrate the ideological values that
political parties and their supporters hold dear. I use the term ideology to refer to the world–view
that one maintains. For example, the ideology of communism refers to the world–view that history
is a story of class struggle and that destiny entails the emancipation of the subordinated class. On the
other hand, the ideology of free–market capitalism refers to the world–view that we are all
independent agents who act in our own self–interest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to keep in mind that although a variety of problems present themselves, depending on
our ideological subjectivity, the solutions to the crisis must be objective. Therefore when deciding
what policy should be enacted to deal with this crisis, it is more important to consider how the
problem should be framed rather than offering solutions. And, now more than ever, it is vital to
recognize that ideology is inherent to the human condition, and to deny its existence is as large a
threat to democracy as the most powerful totalitarian

Why Is Important To Study The Media, Rather Than Simply...

  • 1. Why is important to study the media, rather than simply... The media is a dynamic entity inherent in society that is both powerful and important. It demonstrates this by playing a vital role in the development of a person 's perspective on political, economic and socio–cultural issues. This consequently helps to shape individuals ' viewpoints of the world and define their lives through the interpretation of media texts. (Newman, 2004). Bazalgette supported Newman 's point by stating "Media studies open up your understanding of how things work, how people become informed – or misinformed – and how the myths and ideologies that govern all our lives are created and sustained." (Bazalgette, 2000, pp.14). Thus, the focus of this essay will be on these aspects; how the theory of ideology and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media messages are no longer fixated with only one prevailing meaning imposed on by the authoritative figures. (Schirato & Yell, 2000). Now, not only are there multiple angles to analyze and interpret media texts, the sheer volume of different messages transmitted by media forms is astounding. Perhaps even more crucial to this whole analysis is that the public of today has become more knowledgeable, informed and engaging in participation. They are genuinely interested in what is portrayed before them and may even have a personal stake in the many issues which the media disseminates. People have gotten more independent and complex. Consequently, they become more analytical. To make sense of the meaning of the world portrayed to the audience through the media, there needs to be an engagement in an active work of decoding or interpretation, rather than a passive process of purely receiving and consuming media messages. (Morley, 1992). As quoted from Alan McKee;" When we perform textual analysis on a text, we make an educated guess at some of the mostly likely interpretations that might be made of that text." (McKee, 2001,pp.140). Textual analysis serves as a critical approach to ignite comprehension of media texts and to uncover possible interpretation of reality, thereby allowing the construction of ... • 2. The Definition of Liberty In New York there is a 250–ton green statue dressed in a robe, holding a torch and tablet with broken chains at the feet. In 1886, the statue was given to the United States as a gift to symbolize liberty. The statue is the Statue of Liberty. She is dressed in a robe to symbolize the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas. She holds a torch and a tablet to symbolize evoking the law. Many individuals visit the Statue of Liberty, hoping to understand what liberty means. Liberty has many interpretations and it is not confined to one meaning. To truly understand the meaning of liberty, an individual must understand the different types of liberties that are available to Americans. Visiting the Statue of Liberty will not fully define the concept of what liberty truly means; an individual must understand the definition, the characteristics, the types, and what liberty is not. First, an individual needs to understand the definition of liberty. Liberty is derived from the Latin word "Liber," which means free. Liberty means an individual is able to to live in a society that is free of oppressive restrictions on how to live ones life, behave, or ones political views. An individual commonly expresses liberty as: freedom, independence, autonomy, emancipation, and liberation. Next an individual must understand the characteristics of liberty. There are two characteristics of liberty, negative liberties and positive liberties. Negative liberties are liberties that do not have possess ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony As Ideological Or Political. If there is one piece of music that has been discussed and used more than any other is Beethoven's ninth Symphony. From political meetings to sport matches, Beethoven's piece has been used for all kinds of purposes and by a wide variety of people, and it always seems to be supporting whatever ideas whoever uses it has. In this essay I intend to deepen into the various ideological and political environments in which the piece has been played and to explain why it has been a reference for several different ideologies and ideas, especially focusing on the 20th Century. After a seven–year hiatus, including the war, in 1953 a significant number of the most important politicians in Europe gathered together in West Germany to hear the re–opening of the Bayreuth Festival. The piece played that night was Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and it doesn't seem to be a random choice. The last of Beethoven's symphonies seems to appeal to all kinds of people in all ideologies. The Ode To Joy in the last movement of the piece talks about brotherhood and harmony among all people. This message can be approached from any point of view and still make it support one's ideologies. In this occasion it was seen as a celebration of the new unified Western Europe after the ... • 4. The Popularization Of The Radical Right Emerges From The The popularization of the radical right emerges from the domination of social, economic and political institutions that produces knowledge and information throughout the United Kingdom. This enables the elite class to obtain the power to systematically erase various narratives that challenge the suppression and structural control by the state. The rise of thatcherism originated from the political and economic control propelled by the elite class who imposed a dominant ideology that sustained the movement of the radical right, in the time of severe political instability from World War II. The conservative political elites who wanted to sustain the production of capitalism utilized the economic and political imbalances to promote an agenda ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thatcher had the ability to alter power relations throughout the country and allow for the development of authoritarian populism to be prominent and accepted as the dominant political ideology. Hall contextualizes the development and expansion of the radical right and the ways in which to understand these political motives. Hall notes how the radical right "has to be understood in direct relation to alternative political formations attempting to occupy and command the same space. It is engaged in a struggle for hegemony, within the dominant bloc, against both social democracy and the moderate wing of it's own party" (Hall, 16). Thus, the radical right is accumulating massive power during this critical time in the history of the United Kingdom where social democracy and conservatism are clashing while there is a crisis of capital around the world. Within this context, the power of the right gained momentum from the socialization of the dominant narrative through the use of education, media forces and the power of the economy controlling politics. By normalizing functions of the economic state and the imbalance of political hierarchies, this enables hegemony to justify the status quo and makes the ruling class invisible as they are manipulating power structures to benefit themselves as well as to maintain their power and privilege. Nonetheless, hegemony can be seen as imperial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The History Of The Library Profession John Ambrosio (2013), reflecting on the history of the library profession, invokes Antonio Gramsci, who said that a critical understanding of the self also requires the development of an ethical stance, a set of values, principles, and virtues to guide one's moral conduct (Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). Lacking such ethics or praxis, librarians are vulnerable to the dominant political ideology. "The way to overcome paralysis is the consciousness of what one really is and knowing oneself. It begins with taking an inventory of our historical formation with determining how we have been secretly imprinted by history; how our language, thoughts and identities have been informed by various currents of philosophical thought and cultural practices" (Gramsci in Ambrosio, 2013, p. 328). By examining the history of the library profession – a history that conflates neutrality with equality and democracy, staffed by a cadre of professionals who trace their beginnings to a theory of "library economy" – it is easy to imagine how neoliberal ideology found a home in the library. Many theorists recognize the fact that librarians have the potential to make progressive reforms to society (Raber, 2003, p. 47), if they would only break free of the "contradictory theoretical consciousness" and hegemonic norms that hold them back from doing so by suggesting that they should take no action (Bales & Engle, 2012, p. 22). Louis Althusser (2009), in particular felt that librarians had a "social and moral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay about Political Socialization Political Socialization Political socialization begins early on in life and is an ongoing process affecting individuals throughout. It is how people eventually identify personal beliefs and expectations in American politics. These political views can include our level of patriotism, faith in the democratic system, standards by which we hold governing bodies, and opinions regarding public policies. From the playground to the classroom, the office to the dinner table, much of our lives affect our political opinions. The most easily identified agents of this are family, schooling, peers, mass media, political parties and religious influences. Furthermore, these means indoctrinate us in the political society through four basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As one matures, a certain peer groups reinforce beliefs. Elisabeth Noelle–Neumann, in her book Spiral of Silence, explains individuals inherently fear social isolation from peers and are apprehensive of speaking out against group ideas (Patterson 161). Religion appeals to one's sense of affective socialization by encouraging puritan values and morals supported by the church. The highly inviolable issue of abortion parleys condemnation by the Catholic Church against the advocating for women's rights by pro–choice groups. Catholics, while the strongest advocates, do not stand alone on this issue, as many religions preach abortion is the murder of a child. By relating a medical procedure to murder, people are emotionally affected, and instead of thinking rationally, resort to emotions to defend their stance. Schools are another important faction in delivering affective socialization, but also deliver instrumental socialization to America's youth. Elementary classroom instruction is generally where children receive their first concrete lessons on the American political system. Teachers perform the important civic duty of instructing young Americans in political history, general laws and rights, and patriotism. Take for example the Pledge of Allegiance, recited across the nation in elementary classrooms. Day–in and day–out, children are ingrained with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. How Problematic Is It That TV News Reflects Reality? How Problematic is it that TV news 'reflects' reality ? The idea that TV news reflects reality is a reflectionist position, Orgad describes the approach in which it "assumes that reality is accessible through representation, thus the task of representation is adequately to reflect pre–existing meaning of the real" (19). So then, why is it problematic that TV news reflects reality ? News are supposedly unbiased reporters of what is going on in our world at the moment. However, nowadays it is difficult to see it having an objective view of the world, especially when one compares various news channels. Firstly "News is negative" (Fiske, 286), and because it is negative, it give the idea the our reality of the world is also negative, which explains why it could be seen as reflecting reality. If TV news 'reflects' reality, it is problematic because it does not in fact reflect it, but gives the illusion it does. I will, in this essay, explain how through realism, ideology and narration, TV news expresses ideas of truthiness, falsiness, making its own reality. I first started the essay by looking at a TV news station that would apply to this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How can one be so sure the news is stating the truth ? The biggest problem however is that this statement made by the Court of Florida is not well known and so most people think that, because it is in the news it is true as Jones states "Without news, such statement are little more than opinions. Within news, they become 'facts'" (184). In this view, realism in TV is not what the viewers sees and hear, but rather why they hear it and what they don't. Fiske explains that "realism involves a fidelity both to the physical, sensually perceived details of the world and to the values of the dominant ideology." (36). • 8. `` City Requiem, Calcutt Gender And The Politics Of... Dreaming of Tombstones (133–188): A Summary and Critical Analysis of Gender Issues in "City Requiem, Calcutta: Gender and the Politics of Poverty, Volume 10" by Ananya Roy In Chapter 4, Roy (2008) defines the lack of city planning for the city of Calcutta as a way to understand the amorphous nature of land boundaries, settlements, and the lives that squatters live in this city. Shah's story of the dreams of tombstones defines the new ways in which to interpret the hegemonic discourse of rigid land boundaries. Without an urban plan to develop stable living quarters in the city, it becomes obvious that the effects of poverty are being integrated into the chaotic and unorganized methods of housing developments meant for the working poor. This occurs through the premise of electoral politics that support impoverished populations that leads to an absence of land records and maps (Roy, 2008, p.138). In this manner, the Desakota Hypothesis should be re–defined due to the existence of squatter regions throughout Calcutta, which do not fall into the rigid framework of the urban and rural divide. This aspect of the "communist" politics of Calcutta is part of the new frontiers of land management, mapping, and boundaries that define the new squatter culture in India. The hegemonic process of political domination that preserves the disorganization of working populations and the settlements in which they live. • 9. Knocked Up Textual Analysis Aurora O'Bryan Prof. Kaufman 11/6/2007 Textual Analysis Knocked Up Intended for the enjoyment of the present–day youth generation, the 2007 comedy film Knocked Up deals with more than just comedic issues. Technically introduced as a romantic comedy, this film serves more to its comedic orientation. With awkward romance and stoner mannerisms, the laughs are plentiful for the intentional audience of Knocked Up. However, as the audience is served its fill of laughter, issues are presented that rarely grace the silver screen. The director of this film, Judd Apatow, utilizes his dominion and influence over the audience to introduce the dominant ideology of Knocked Up. As seen in his previous film, The 40 Year Old Virgin, it is evident that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition to such themes Knocked Up clearly addresses the issues of casual sex, abortion, and commitment. Entirely dismissing the option of abortion, undoubtedly, the creators of Knocked Up purposefully built their story around the responsible, pro–life choice made my Alison. Especially in today's heated debates for or against abortion, this film institutes itself as an ideological state apparatus to support pro–life decisions through the positive encouragement illustrated in Alison and Ben's working relationship. Reaching conclusions about the consequences of casual sex, as portrayed in this film, the creators chose to make evident these hardships to the audience. With intentions for the audience to reflect upon, to learn from, and, perhaps, to incorporate such morals into their own lives, Alison and Ben are made an example of in this film. In the end criticizing Ben's drug usage, the film may also be said to be opposed to such a drug–induced lifestyle. Despite the explicitness, Knocked Up demonstrates particularly high thematic value. The thematic value that is made palpable in Knocked Up is subject to assessment within the historical context surrounding the production of this film. Through the ideological analysis of Knocked Up, these values and beliefs are expressed in relation to the present–day, historical context that they are produced within (White 163). • 10. No Video Games in Education in Pamela Paul's Book Reading,... Pamela Paul, author of "Reading, Writing and Video Games", demonstrates that video games should not be part of the education. Paul asserts there is no learning from playing video games and the education should be the same old fashion. Paul observes the technology in classroom could be useful for the students. However, she thinks the children should stick on reading and writing for learning. Finally, Paul prefers to let the children play video games in free time rather than let them play video games for education. Although, Paul idea of using technology in classroom and marketing education fun games are true, the idea of letting the children play games that are not educational in their free time are inaccurate. • 11. Ideology Of Punk Rock Ideology What is punk rock? How many people know the real definition? Punk rocks values, attitude, and ideologies? Punk rock isn't just a style or a scene but a way of life. It all started in the late 1970s, originating from the working class angst and frustrations many youth were feeling about the economic inequality. One of punks' main oppositions was rejection of mainstream, corporate mass culture and its values. It continued to evolve its ideology of anti–racist and anti–sexist belief systems as the movement spread from its origins in England and New York to Northern America. The attitude common in the subculture is the resistance to selling out, which means abandoning one's values and changing in musical style toward pop to embrace anything that's mainstream capitalist culture in the exchange for money, status, or power. Punk rocks' common thinking wasn't only anti–authoritarism, and not selling out but also non–conformity, direct action, and a DIY ethic. The DIY attitude was pointed towards stepping forward and speaking without any restraint. To fight with warrior qualities to achieve what you were striving for. The kind of thinking and motives for punk rock subjects was to not settle for what society made acceptable and standard but to think and work outside of the box that was holding them in. Punk rock ideologies were expressed though music and lyrics, punk literature, fashion and visual art. In the beginning punk fashion evolved everyday objects like safety pins and ... Ideology In The Selfish Giant, And The Bling Ring In both the films we watched in class a large range of ideological perspectives were presented, and those perspectives were largely based upon their director's views and opinions of the world. The two films were The Selfish Giant directed by Clio Bernard, and The Bling Ring directed by Sophia Coppola. Ideology is a very important concept in both films, and it can be defined as a systematic body of ideas, attitudes, values and perspectives that help shape a particular culture or group within that culture. Each director uses formal elements, and character values to show specific ideologies. In The Bling Ring Sophia Coppla focuses on showing the life style that a group of corrupt teens so desperately wants to live, and why the culture surrounding them is the reason for their corrupt values. While the film The Selfish Giant highlights issues of working class people, and a culture that has put children in a position where stealing to support ones family feels like doing the right thing. Select characters in each film have a fascination with material things, and although they have very different reasons for them the side effects they experience because of these fascinations are very similar. In The Bling Ring the characters have a strong desire to acquire the most popular, and extravagant fashion items; the motivation behind this desire is that they have learned base their self worth off the things they own and nothing else. • 13. Analysis Of The Article ' Reinventing The Veil ' The role of the veil in Persepolis One of the most controversial topics concerning Muslim women's rights is the idea of the veil. It is believed by some Muslims that the veil is an Islamic obligation that all Muslim women must adhere to. But nowadays, the veil can have different meanings that are not necessarily religious. In her article "Reinventing the Veil," Leila Ahmed addresses some of the different meanings that the veil can have. Marjane Satrapi explores one of those meanings in her animated autobiography Persepolis (2008). In Persepolis, Marjane tells the story of her rebellion against the Iranian Islamist regime that takes over Iran, oppresses women, and forces them to wear the veil. What was interesting to me was seeing Marjane wear the veil without being oppressed, although she does not believe in it, and is being forced to wear it. In Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi escapes being a subject to the Iranian Islamist ideology by establishing her individual identity through transforming the veil from a means of oppression into a means of feminist rebellion. In an interview conducted by MovieWeb, Marjane notes that the film isn't political, historical or sociological. The film simply holds a humanistic message that says that "human beings anywhere is the same, and they have the right to live" (Satrapi.) This humanistic message is what we see Marjane fighting for in the film. She is striving to live a normal life, and one of the things that help her do that is the veil. She ... In this film: a drug deal gone results in Llewelyn Moss finding a briefcase full of money and running away with it. Chigurh (a cold blooded murderer) tracks Llewelyn to try and find the money, resulting in guns fired and people killed. The themes of changing times and right and wrong were sufficiently portrayed through the techniques of cinematography, non–diegetic voice over, symbolism, dialogue and lighting, the combination of techniques were also used to portray these themes. Firstly, the idea of changing times is evident in the beginning scene through the verbal feature of non–diegetic voice over from Ed Tom Bell. "I was sheriff of this county when I was twenty–five years old. Hard to believe. Grandfather was a lawman. Father too. • 20. Ideological Conflict And Political Polarization Ralph Mehitang Political Science 102 Professor Robinson November 28, 2016 Polarization In America Ideological Conflict is defined as the mental, verbal, or physical manifestation of rivalry between people that share opposing world views. Political polarization relates to when a person's view and stance on a topic, law, issue or particular group of people is stringently defined by their identification with a particular political party or ideology. Ever since the 1960s ideological conflict and political polarization have evolved as more factors have come into play. Examples of important factors that have fueled the evolution of these two topics are abortion, the death penalty, gay marriage, gun control, illegal immigration, Euthanasia, drug, war, and religion. These factors are important topics that over the years have caused the evolution of ideological conflict and political polarization and have caused such divide amongst the people of America when it comes to their views and stance on specific things. In my opinion I believe to the utmost degree that ideological conflict and political polarization poses a major threat to the effective functioning of the democracy in America today. Political polarization today is on a completely different level than what it was 30–50 years. In this essay, I will examine the performances of power that is observed throughout the ritual ceremony, "chanting" in the Buddhism culture, displaying how the religion is used for concealing relations of power within this definite culture. Through this examination, I will use the theories of Karl Marx (religion as ideology) and Antonio Gramsci (hegemony being concept of power), to support the display of how the power distributes religion. By relating to the definition of power, I argue that, for the members of this community, 'power' is about ease and security– no inequality. In particular, "nightmares" of individuals, can be related to the semiological analysis of a given media text in relation to dominant ideology and culture in general. His main points in this are twofold, first is to point out that the more horrible and "nightmarish" a media scenario (i.e. story) is, the more difficult it is to de–construct the ideological markers that serve as the basis for the text. The second, and perhaps more important, is that the ideological representation in the nightmare represents a repressed wish of society and has increased threat to the dominant class, or the bourgeois. Poetry Analysis 'Thanks' By Yusef Kounyakaa Nicholas Nava Mr. Coogan AP Lang–6 22 November 2017 Poetry Essay Beauty is a subjective idea that focuses on the characteristics preferable to a single species that gives an advantage over another and at the cost of another species survival. Humans have created astounding empires with beautiful cities and monuments because they were the most progressive species that are able to do so because of their capacity for violence. Some empires fear for their survival, so they must eliminate any threat whether it be humans or other animals. The poem, "Thanks" by Yusef Komunyakaa, it symbolizes how humans can become single minded only driven by their own personal desires at the sake of anyone else. Humans naturally commit ugly atrocities to progress their own beauty, or at least idea of, and they instinctively oppose nature because mankind is the dark side of nature. The poem describes the life of a man during the Vietnam War, a conflict involving the United States and local Vietnamese who supported a communist regime, and how unexplainable sporadic events saved his life. He gives thanks to an unknown force that saves his life multiple times throughout his tour in Vietnam because the instances are what some people consider luck and others and act of a higher being or deity. Often, the argument of no platforming is rebutted with the notion of free speech, which has value because once all ideas are shared, they can either be exposed as wrong, but if not they could be strengthened through debate. Is this consistent with reality? Explain. American perceive their culture to be far because the media hides the gross inequities from the public until they feel it is important to discuss. However, even when the media relays the messages they are obscured from the actual truth. So, the American people think their culture is fear and equal, but it is just an illusion created by the media. 2. How do the media play role in perpetuating inequality? The media shapes the way Americans see our society, but it's what goes unreported that should worry the American people. For instead, the poor and the poverty they face is the biggest misconception portrayed by the media. The media dehumanizes the poor and makes them into statistics or averages, rather than the people and children who are suffering to survive. Also, when the poor are discussed they are discussed through the eyes of a middle–class person which portrays the poor like nuisance or a hassle. They blame the poor for being victims of poverty, claiming they must have brought it on themselves. While, people read or listen to the media their perception of others are shaped upon the tone and emotions coming from the reporter. The American people are oblivious to the something falsely represented stories or headlines, they tend to believe the media no matter if the information is true or false. 3. The movie, to me, appears to be the cliche white shaming movie, and the creators are obviously left wing and want to preach the left wing status and show the struggles we no longer face. Before I get into my character and categories I would like to discuss Left and Right Wing. Left Wing typically believes that the government should have the utmost power and they are usually liberals, however, the Right Wing thinks the government should have little to no power and that personal goals and power should be the top priority, these are what we usually call conservatives. The character who I will be analyzing is Hilly Holbrook. Very quickly into the introduction of Hilly, she is portrayed as the "bad guy" or villian of the film because again, this is a left wing film and Hilly is very clearly right wing. Like most characters in The Help, you can generally see their intended values based on the color of clothing they are wearing, usually red, white, or blue. Hilly constantly wears red a color commonly associated with the right wing, which continually paints her such throughout the film. The bipolar categories of her ideology are International vs. Nationalistic, Democratic vs. Hierarchical, and Insiders vs. Outsiders. My first category in Hilly's ideology is International vs. Nationalistic. The international outlook is more characteristic of left wing ideology. It tends to promote looking outward and trying to govern, and care for the entire world and its peoples through aid or diplomacy. Also frequently sees everyone as equals. This makes the nationalistic approach, right wing. Nationalist are strongly patriotic and see their nation as the best, they want to focus on making their people better and let others find their own path, they also view others as lessers, not because they don't see them as equal but because some people work harder and therefore are more equal than others. He first starts on describing ideology as a term that does not consist of individual thoughts, yet assembly of different basics that direct to a certain judgment or perception. As said by Hall, the representation of race in the mass media builds the positive and negative consequences of ideology by manufacturing and transforming the ideologies. This ideological ambiguity is often shaped when the mass media puts up a meaning of what race is for the audiences, what significance the images of race conveys, and how the issue of race is supposed to be recognized. However, because the Dream has been integrated into our political, economical, and social systems so deeply, it is nearly impossible for many to reach the Dream. In order the give a full analysis of the American Dream, an in depth look into the political, economical, and social aspects of it must be done, and this is because all three aspects are intertwined together. Politically, as John Archer, a historian and professor at the University of Minnesota, stated, "The American dream has long been bound up with America's politics and political ideology, and for the most part the relationship has been harmonious" And yes, for the most part, they have been harmonious, however, with the current change in political views and lack of political direction, things may soon change to be less in sync. • 32. Bartleby the Scrivener Question 1: From a Marxist perspective, Herman Melville's story "Bartleby the Scrivener" can be interpreted as a story proving that capitalism makes it unnecessarily difficult for its subjects to succeed, forcibly enslaves its subjects to its system, rids its subjects of aspirations and purpose due to the impossibility for creativity, and deceives its subjects into believing that money can alleviate emotional issues. Because both Bartleby and the narrator lose their professions during the course of their lives despite their desire to make an adequate living, the story exposes capitalism's apathetic and harsh treatment of its subjects. Towards the end of the story, we learn that "Bartleby had been a subordinate clerk in the Dead Letter Office at Washington, from which he had been suddenly removed by a change in the administration" (American Literature). Bartleby, a capitalist subject who, at the beginning of the story, eagerly attends to his duties, was stripped of his job simply because of a new administration. Melville reveals how capitalism as an ideology essentially chews its subjects up only to leave the majority of them without high–paying positions; it is an ideology that perpetuates the failure of many while advantaging few. Even the narrator, a supposedly astute Wall Street lawyer, loses one of his professions before Bartleby's entrance into his life: "I consider the sudden and violent abrogation of the office of Master of Chancery, by the new Constitution, as a ... • 33. The Use Of Diffusion Between Cultural Participation... Established in 1944 by Donald Watson, modern–day veganism has become an increasingly popular lifestyle through recent decades. Veganism is a very strict diet. It involves a strong commitment and can also restrict certain fashion statements in some way or form. Vegans avoid any consumption of any [animal related food or fabric that has been fabricated with animal skin]. Although many, do not see the vegan choice as a reasonable way to a healthy living, many Americans have seen their diet change being influenced by popular artists, such as Beyoncé, who endorse the idea of veganism. As mentioned by Elizabeth Cherry and her concept of the diffusion between cultural participation function and support veganism, this paper will be demonstrate how the music industry has inclined many Americans to dramatically transition their diet as omnivores to vegans. Cherry believes that there are two groups of vegans; "those in the punk subculture and those who were not – and investigates how they defined and practiced veganism differently"(Cherry 1). Becoming a vegan punk according to Cherry, is seen to "describe a state of mind and a willingness to change society more than a sartorial display, this is accomplished through a DIY ethic, characterized by independent bands, record labels, and book presses, as well as a politically progressive way of living"(Cherry 5). With this in mind the reader can infer that veganism can be tied in with the modern hipster and the industrial musical culture. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Essay on The Dictators The twentieth century, unlike any other before it, saw dramatic changes in many different areas such as science, technology, politics, religion, and society. One of the most important and definitely the most obvious change is the increasing deadliness of war. Granted, people have died in wars from the very beginning, but in the twentieth century wars began to generate much higher body counts both among the contending armies and among civilian populations, the latter being the most drastic change in number of casualties. Similarly, in the twentieth century, two opposing dictatorships arose. Although both had many similarities, they represented the culmination of two different political ideologies that had flourished in Europe since the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Richard Overy's stunningly detailed and well–crafted study of this dichotomy, The Dictators, illuminates it for even the uninitiated in the world of European or Global History. One particular aspect that clearly illustrates both the similarities and the differences is the ideological goals of each regime. Despite the fact that they were on two opposite sides of the political spectrum, the similarities between the two show that they may not have been as opposite has they appear. One of the goals was the creation of a utopian society. "The social vision at the heart of both dictatorships was utopian in a very literal sense. Like the construction of Thomas More's ideal city, both pursued the perfect society by compelling their subjects to struggle against the imperfect present" (Overy 229). The precise type of utopian society, however, was a major point of distinction. Hitler sought to form a nationalist Germany in which everything, from the economy to the church, was subordinate to the needs of the state. "'The state must act,' wrote Hitler, 'as a guardian of a millennial future in the face of which the wishes and selfishness of the individual must appear as nothing and submit'" (Overy 229). Stalin, on the other hand, sought to follow the ideals of Marx and form the ideal Marxist–Leninist state. "The socialist project under Stalin was built on the idea of struggle against the surviving elements of class selfishness and the eventual triumph of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Political Correctness Essay Political Correctness Political correctness is a political ideology, nothing more. I believe political correctness is a political ideology and it cannot be correct unless it is linked to genuine transformation. First, I will examine the origins of political correctness to try to get a clear understanding of what this movement is. Second, I will show you that political correctness is political and how it became a political ideology. Lastly, I shall discuss why this ideology does not work. Political correctness is cultural Marxism. Marx, as cited in Introduction to Social Science course guide, believed that if people were left to work on their own they would be more efficient. He had an ideological belief that laborers could actually want ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some members moved into government such as Herbert Marcuse who was the predecessor to the CIA and other members move into Hollywood. These beginnings of political correctness would mean very little to us today if it weren't for the student rebellions in the mid 1960 's .The students as Lind notes read the book that Marcuse writes, "Eros and Civilization". The students do not have to read lots of heavy Marxism and Marcuse tells them everything they want to hear. Such as," Do your own thing"," If it feels good do it" and "you never have to go to work". Marcuse was also the man who created the phrase "make love not war". Political correctness arrived at American Universities. Therefore, political correctness's true origins have been forgotten and so people have forgotten what political correctness really is. "Terms such as politically correct thus have a hidden history, uncovering which is dependent both on the accurate recollection of those who were there," (Cameron, 1995,78). Now we know where political correctness originated but in order to understand political correctness as a political ideology we have to first look at what politics is and second what an ideology is. Politics is about the distribution of power. In the Introduction to Social Science course guide it is stated that, "politics can be anywhere". Therefore, politics is in the language we speak. Power is the " ability to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Analysis of the Representation of Women in Magazines Essay Analysis of the Representation of Women in Magazines In this essay, I am going to analyse how girls and women are represented in a range of magazines. Depending on the target audience, the contents of the magazine differs. This essay will look and describe the differences between the magazines and why they are there. The age groups and magazines I will be examining are; teenage with the magazine 'Sneak,' twenty something's with the magazine 'Glamour,' and middle aged with the magazine 'Women's Own.' I will give a general overview of each target audience and what is represented. I will begin with 'Sneak' and the target audience of teenagers. Although aimed at teenagers, many eight and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 'Glamour' is aimed mainly at late teens to late twenties. When flicking through the magazine, I noticed that there was more text and adverts. This reflects how the age–group has more time and disposable income. Also, 'Glamour' was the most expensive magazine, being £1.90 and included a website, (see figure 2,) which again indicates a higher disposable income and extra time. The front cover yet again includes an hourglass shaped celebrity, but she is older, although she still conforms to the dominant ideology for a young female. The magazine includes the latest fashion and make–up styles, but on a much larger scale when compared to 'Sneak.' "MASSIVE FASHION SPECIAL: 1322 HOT NEW LOOKS." It again includes problem pages, but the problems are mainly on lifestyle or sex, instead of dating. 'Glamour' also advertises to the stereotypical women using its front page with the advert; "20% off SHOES At Faith for every reader." Magazines can use this effectively, because it represents the expectations reflected by society and the media. 'Women's Own' is mostly aimed at middle aged housewives, although older people do read it, because it would give them a chance of extended youth. The front cover for the magazine, (see figure 3,) is dramatically different. It has older soap celebrities, who some women would be able to relate to. The people on the cover are less bothered about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. No More Miss America By Robin Morgan Essay Many radical feminist groups such as the New York Radical Women group (NYRF) gathered together as The Women Liberation Movement to protest against the deep–rooted conception of a "traditional woman" in the United States during the Second Wave Feminism (1960s–1990s). The Women Liberation Movement was a demonstration of challenging society's common sense, or hegemony, which was nurtured by the dominant ideology which in this case was a gender hierarchy where men were believed to be superior to women. The primary source "No More Miss America" by Robin Morgan describes her experiences as a participant of the NYRF protesting against the Miss American Pageant in Atlantic City on September 7th 1968. The NYRF group discussed ten points of how the Miss American Pageant promoted the "traditional woman" stereotype based on racial beauty standards, submissiveness, and inferiority to men. The NYRF protest critiqued both the representation side of the behavioral expectation of "traditional women" as well as the structural side of the obstacles that women faced within social institutions such as labor and educational opportunities. With the representative side "traditional women" promoted by the Miss American Pageant, it reinforced women's submissive and sexist inferiority and racial beauty criteria within the structural side to be approval by men. However, there was intersectionality in the structural obstacles and representation side extending the social discrimination based on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Social And Political Views Of Democracy Democracy offers people the chance to be involved citizens rather than unreceptive subordinates. However, this right doesn't come unchallenged. Citizens are required to assess a broad range of political subjects (such as candidates, parties, and policies) and then combine and simplify their likings in a way that allows them to choose on voting decisions. So, how are these challenges met? In the United States, some citizens are conservative Republics, some are liberal Democrats, and others fall in between or outside the two. Recent studies have proposed that these recognitions play an important part in voting behavior and political perception. Recently, however, more studies have accumulated advocating for two meager assumptions in regards to this study: that liberal/conservative identifications are bipolar in meaning and that underlying this bipolarity is cognitive meaning based on political issues (Conover, Feldman, 265). These variances in political positions are called political attitudes, and fall on a spectrum between extremely liberal and extremely conservative. Broadly speaking, this spectrum distinguishes what someone believes about social issues and governments role in society. These beliefs are formed by a variation of aspects, which can include family, gender, religion, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and region. Even things like behavior, core ideals and values, and ideology can affect people's political attitudes. However, these opinions are not set in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Free-Market Capitalism And Communism The current migrant crisis, which has arisen from civil unrest, climate change and globalization, is a driving political force in Europe. It has sparked a wide variety of responses among political parties and citizens alike. These responses have managed to clearly demonstrate the ideological values that political parties and their supporters hold dear. I use the term ideology to refer to the world–view that one maintains. For example, the ideology of communism refers to the world–view that history is a story of class struggle and that destiny entails the emancipation of the subordinated class. On the other hand, the ideology of free–market capitalism refers to the world–view that we are all independent agents who act in our own self–interest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is important to keep in mind that although a variety of problems present themselves, depending on our ideological subjectivity, the solutions to the crisis must be objective. Therefore when deciding what policy should be enacted to deal with this crisis, it is more important to consider how the problem should be framed rather than offering solutions. And, now more than ever, it is vital to recognize that ideology is inherent to the human condition, and to deny its existence is as large a threat to democracy as the most powerful totalitarian ...
