WHAT IS THE NEED TO LEARN PHONETICS?
 Language is a system of communication. And
written language is an attempt to represent spoken
language by visual symbols.
 In English the correspondence is not consistently
maintained.
 English as spoken by educated people in India
does not differ from native English in grammar and
vocabulary but in pronunciation.
 It is there by necessary for Indian students to make
a systematic study of English language sound
system.
WHAT IS PHONETICS?
 Phonetics is a branch of Linguistics (Science of
Language),
 Phonetics deals with the sounds of language(s).
 The word Phonetics is related with the word “Phone”
which means „sound‟.
LINGUISTICS
 Linguistics is the field that studies the languages from
scientific perspective.
 There are various branches of linguistics, such as,
SOUNDS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE
CONSONANTS AND VOWELS
 Basically there are two types of sounds in any
language: The Consonants and the Vowels.
 What is a Consonant?
A basic speech sound in which the breath is at least
partly obstructed and which can be combined with a
vowel to form a syllable.
 What is a Vowel?
A speech sound that is produced by comparatively
open configuration of the vocal tract and with vibration
of the vocal cords.
VARIOUS DEFINITIONS
 The sounds produced without any closure of
the air passage and no narrowing that would
cause audible friction are called Vowels. All the
other sounds are Consonants. –Bansal &
Harrison
 In the production of vowel sound the
articulators do not come very close together,
and the passage of the airstream is relatively
unobstructed. –Peter Ladefoged
PLACES OF ARTICULATION
CONSONANTS
Consonants are categorized by two ways:
Places of Articulation & Manners of Articulation
VOWELS
 Vowels are categorized in terms of the position
of the tongue and shape of the lips, i.e. High-
Low, Front-Back and Rounded-Unrounded.
