2. Welcome, here are today’s objectives:
• Participants will explore the SAMR model by working
independently and in collaborative groups in order to share
ideas and tools for best practices.
• Participants will explore the SAMR model in order to apply
reflective practices for technology integration.
4. Categories
1.) Find a team of 5-6 fellow teachers.
2.) Challenge: Find out at least 6 things that every single group member
has in common. (You are not allowed to use physical characteristics.)
3.) This is a race! The first team to come up with 6 similarities is the
winner. We will continue until all teams have identified 6 similarities.
4.) Ready go!
5. Continuum
• Think of 3 examples of technology integration you
have used in your classroom or observed in your
building and write it on the Post-its provided.
• Share and rank the examples in your group using
the continuum provided.
“Purposeful Use ofTechnology” “Just Because” use ofTechnology
6. What is SAMR?
• SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, & Redefinition) is a
model designed to help educators to purposefully integrate
technology into teaching and learning.
• Developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, the model supports and enables
teachers to design, develop, and infuse digital learning experiences
that utilize technology.
9. Why?
The instructor creates authentic experiences that motivate
learners to construct their own meaning and accept
responsibility for learning.

10. SAMR Analysis
• Spend some time selecting resources from the following link:
SAMR Model Blendspace
• Using the analysis tool, view and analyze the clips and links.
(You have ten minutes)
• Synthesize your ideas and be prepared to discuss with the group.
11. SAMR Levels
• Doing old things in new ways
• Substitution: Direct tool substitute, no functional change
(typing an essay)
• Augmentation: Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with
functional improvement
(google doc: students can comment share, add on, etc.)
• Modification: Technology allows for significant task redesign
(wordpress blog)
• Redefinition: Technology allows for the creation of new tasks
(Digital StoryTelling Project)
12.
13. SAMR as a Reflective Tool
• Is it a good use of instructional time?
• Is it memorable, meaningful, and necessary?
• Does the task involve P21 Skills?
• How can technology tasks
move from enhancement to
transformation?
14. Summary
• Revisit the continuum on your table.
• Reflect on your example by placing it on the correct level on the
SAMR model provided.
• Discuss your reasoning with an elbow partner.
15. Things to Remember
•SAMR is a reflective tool
•Redefinition does not equal rigor
•Teachers need to keep good instructional
practice in mind when integrating
technology:
• Bloom'sTaxonomy
• Charlotte Danielson Framework
16. Objective:
• Participants will explore and apply the SAMR model by working in
collaborative groups.
• Participants will share ideas and tools for best practices.

We want to get to the point we are using drinking the pumpkin spice.....
Bloom's Taxonomy, will ask recall questions, but don't want to spend most of our time there......
Continuum move around....
coffee and bloom's
BLoom's redefining: Higher level question.... (sometimes have to ask recall questions)
