Blindness And Sight In Oedipus By Sophocles
Most people believe eyes are the window to the soul, but in this ancient Greek tragedy, eyes can be an indicator to someone's intelligence level. The
blind do not always have the power to see into the future just as those with sight are not always aware of their present day predicaments, but in Ancient
Greek, both of those are accurate. Sight and ignorance go hand–in–hand as well as blindness and knowledge do in the story Oedipus by Sophocles.
Sophocles uses irony to emphasize positives and negatives for two men, Oedipus, King of Thebes and Tiresias, local Oracle. Oedipus has sight but
lacks the ability to fully comprehend situations in multiple scenes. He is unable to interpret many clues given to him along the way, ultimately
leading to his wife's (and mother's) death along with his own downfall as well. Oedipus requested Tiresias to help him stop the plague by figuring
out who killed Laius, the past king of Thebes. When Tiresias was hesitant to tell Oedipus that he was the true murderer, he recanted all the praise he
gave the prophet and said, "You will not explain / what you understand, but rather intend / to betray us and destroy the city. / ... You worst of wicked
men!" (Sophocles 348–350, 353). With this, the wise Tiresias said, "You have found fault with my anger, but your own, / living within you, you did
not see, but blamed me" (Sophocles 356–357). His anger for not receiving what he asked of Tiresias was blinding, even though in the end it brings his

The Culture of Ancient Egypt
Language and System of writing
The system of writing that the ancient Egyptians used is called Hieroglyphics coming from the two Greek words hieros meaning holy and glyphe
meaning writing. Hieroglyphics are a series of pictures drawn from one side of the page to the other. Hieroglyphics can be read and written from left
to right or right to left depending upon which way the human and animal characters are facing. If the characters face the left then you read from the
left to the right. Each hieroglyph represents a single sound, but as the Egyptians wrote sentences and words they took advantage of the vowels so they
are still trying to figure them out today. There are two basic types of hieroglyphs ideograms and phonograms. Often the ... Show more content on

The Government in Ancient Egypt was ran on theocracy, which meant that there was a ruler who was recognized as deity. The pharaoh couldn't run
this all by himself so he had a hierarchy of rulers and leaders below him who ran different parts of the government. This would mean that the pharaoh
would command the hierarchy and they would fulfil their roles and jobs as priest, scribes, vizier etc.
Reliable supply of food and water
The Ancient Egyptians are indebted to the Nile River because it has supplied them with water and nutrients in the soil for them to grow the crops
that they need to survive for many centuries. The predictability of the Nile's flooding allowed the Egyptians to inquire deep into the agriculture of
their land in order for them to grow all these crops such as the grains, fruits and vegetables that they used to eat. The Egyptian diet however
revolved heavily around several primary crops, especial cereals and barley. The Egyptians would also grow Einkorn Emmer where grown to make
bread. Pulses, beans, lentils, later chickpeas and fava beans were also grown. Root crop such as radishes, onions, and garlics were grown along with
salad crops like lettuce and parsley. The Egyptians artwork motive was fruit, suggesting that this was also a major part of agricultural living.

How Did Ancient Egypt Created A Form Of Communication
The ancient Egyptians created a form of communication by creating symbols that were put together into words, called hieroglyphs. They represented
both objects and ideas, and were enscripted and carved on walls of temples and pyramids, usually made by the pharaoh to show laws, rules, or
announcements. This type of writing held secret messages, and was hard to decode. The hieroglyphic system used in ancient Egypt had around 750
basic symbols, called glyphs. At first they used picture writing, and the pictures represented an object, pictograms, but later the pictures represented
ideas, known as ideograms. At last, the pictures represented both objects and ideas, but also the sound of a word. Each picture was formed by a unique
sound and image.

The Mayans and Aztecs are well–known early Amerindian civilizations. Their background, culture, decline, and influenced to each are important
factors to understand this pivotal time in history. Moreover these early civilization were similar, yet differed in numerous ways. The Mayans
civilization era can be dated around 300 A.D– 1300 A.D. Mayan background suggest that the Olmec is their parent civilization. The Mayans lived near

Mayan Religious Practices
The Mayan and American religious practices are alike and different in many ways. First of all, the Mayans tend to be more religious and focus a
lot on the gods, while the American religion we aren't as religious, even though we still have a god. The second big thing to know is that the
Mayans only had themselves to rely on while the Americans today have many things to rely on, such as tools and machines! That is part of why the
Mayans are so religious, because they relied on themselves and the gods. The Mayan religious practices consist of many different things. The Mayans

Carr's Writing Style
Technology evolves with time and changes the perspectives and culture of the society that it permeates, the internet is no exception in its role as a
digital information highway of the modern world. Nicholas Carr uses data, examples, and repetition to structure his analysis of the above
phenomenon, in his article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?". With a varied collection of data, Carr illustrates the effects on reading styles due to the
use of the internet. He sites qualitative data such as the changes traditional media like newspapers have had to change to keep readership in the digital
age. The New York Times began including abstracts or "shortcuts" to provide a quick peek at the news rather than have the reader scour the pages.

In the beginning, he structures the opening paragraphs around his changing habits of reading and research. He expresses concern at his mental
expectation that he can "take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles" (Paragraph 4). He then widens out
to the consequences others experienced with the prevalence of technology. The differences between the writing systems, ideograms employ and
"develop a mental circuitry for reading that is very different from the circuitry found in those of us whose written language employs an alphabet. The
variations extend across many regions of the brain, including those that govern such essential cognitive functions as memory and the interpretation of
visual and auditory stimuli" (paragraph 10). Through a consistent repetition, he lays out key facts and provides the reader with the incentive to
consider the changes that they've experienced. By the conclusion of his paper, a reader can realize that their view of what is human and what makes a
machine have blurred or even switched places. Carr's writing explains where humans are through data, how the effects are taking place from the
individual to the global world, and finally the haunting illustration of where humanity is more cruel and unfeeling than the machines. In a world with
less and less deeper reading, the threat we pose to the future becomes more

Google Making USupid Logos
In "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" (2008), Nicholas Carr maintains that the advent of the Internet has produced a shallow generation of information
customers who lack the ability to deeply engage with and critically think about a text. To support the argument, Carr draws on personal and historical
anecdotes and one scientific study. The purpose of Carr's article is to open a dialogue about the potentially adverse effects the Internet could have on
humans' cognitive processes. Carr establishes an informal relationship with the audience, who are generally well–educated, upper–middle class
individuals. Because the audience is educated, they are very capable of critically thinking. However, Carr's use of other rhetorical strategies disarms
them and detracts from the dearth of logos. His essay is rife with numerous unfounded premises, poor evidence, and logical fallacies. Because of this
lack of logos is in a way compensated by including numerous appeals to ethos and pathos, the audience is likely to find the article persuasive unless
they re–read the article deeply with a critical lens. Carr's thesis is founded on two main premises: first, the population's... Show more content on

The study has several validity issues: first, there was no control group, nor was there a pre–test. This means that there was no baseline to compare the
results to, nor was there a control group to determine if the change was a result of the variable in question (the Internet). Second, the study only
examined journal databases, which are frequented by students and researchers more often than the general population. Therefore, the sample is not
representative of the general population and the results cannot be generalized to the broader population, which Carr did. Because this methodologically
unsound study was the only one he cited, it is evident the essay lacks logos. Therefore, the first premise cannot stand from a logical

Sergei Eisenstein's Bonnie And Clyde
Sergei Eisenstein's film theory often reflects on the capabilities of allowing film editing to create the essence of the scenes. With the work of Arthur
Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" viewers see aspects of the formalist concepts while comparing Eisenstein interpretation of artistic cinematography. In
"Eisenstein Cinematic Principle and Ideogram–Dialectical Approach" the article discusses the way cinematographic traits help revolutionize the way
we view different forms graphically. The article maintains that cinematography is simply a montage of scenes in frames timed together to create a
picturesque feel that is often left open to interpret by the viewer. The form of the film will associate different dimensions to an object that is used to be

Viewers can see that she is naive, unhappy and pondering her decision to leave home, which is rather difficult or seen as predictable to express
verbally in her room alone. She is also naked in this that delivers a sense of innocence and adolescence or wanting to experience adulthood. What is
particularly interesting is how Penn uses the bed rails as a prop in this scene as a cinematographic convention. Penn creates a depictive metaphor about
the character physical state when Bonnie holds onto the rails and looks out solemnly like a prisoner. Viewers can see that she is trapped in a life that
is not stimulating, and that she is longing for some sort of excitement. When the camera zooms in to an extreme close–up of her eyes viewers can see
the sudden change of somber to slight curiosity that cinematography delivers skillfully in the scene. When editing images together that create their own
meanings allows the film to depend on what one sees visually on the screen. This is the purpose of Eisenstein theory, to allow room for the viewer to

Scribes In Ancient Egypt
Scribes were among the first few people in ancient Egypt who knew how to read and write. As someone who was skilled in both the arts and
writing, the scribe was supposed to write letters and legal documents, collected taxes, take records and tallies and performed all manner of clerical
duties (Kraft). Scribes learned how to read and write from their fathers, since becoming a scribe was passed down to their sons, as well as attending a
"scribe–in–training" school which is attached to a temple or the palace (Kraft). Wealthier young–scribes often had a tutor, but most learned by
continually copying texts and rehearsing stories, often about manners and religious doctrine (Kraft). These lessons were strictly taught, "as attested by
the fact that the ancient Egyptian word 'seba' means both 'teach' and 'beat'" (Kraft). Not only was schooling physically draining, the lesson plans were

Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt is located along the Nile River of Northeastern Africa. More specifically, it is the territory where ancients Egyptians lived in the valley
of the delta and the Nile. It was a thriving civilization for more than 3,000 years, from about the time of 3300 BC to 30BC.
The culture of Ancient Egypt is identified and very well known for many aspects of their ways of life. Considering the time period, they were very
technologically advanced. This can especially be seen through the great pyramids and hieroglyphs that elaborately decorate the walls of them. Pyramids
were not small structures. In fact the largest one was over fifty stories high. In addition they were also built completely by manual labor. Labor ... Show

This may be one of the reasons why the culture was able to thrive for more than 3000 years. During this time, there are four eras; the Old Kingdom,
the Middle Kingdom, the New Kingdom, and the Late Kingdom. Each of these time periods had its own characteristics as well as accomplishments.
As you read this, you will also be able to see how advanced, compared to other cultures of this time, Egyptians were at completing everyday tasks.
One of the most important things to remember is that they were able to make use of all the great natural resources around them. The Nile provided
one of their most valuable resources for not only food but sporting events as well. Their religion also provided another well formed belief that existed
among many people. The majority of the culture held a high belief not only that a body should be mummified after they have died, but that if the right
steps are followed throughout life and death, the spirit of that body will be able to be reincarnated into another life. SO please read on to see why the
Ancient Egyptians were and are still such a fascinating culture to study.

How Did Egypt Contribute To Western Civilization
The Ancient Egyptian civilization played a major role in the development of western civilization. Possibly the biggest contributions it has made came
from their culture, their art, and religion. Without these contributions, modern societies might not have been as advanced as they are today. Ancient
Egypt made a lot of cultural contributions to the western world through writing, architecture, agriculture, and astronomy. With the invention of
hieroglyphics, the Egyptians were able to leave behind stories of their culture in creative symbols. Though not as advanced as modern day writing, it
was a step above glyphs, and two steps above pictographs and ideograms. This would also be another stepping stone to the invention of cuneiform and

Essay on The Swastika in MAUS
The Swastika in MAUS
The image of the swastika pervades Arthur Spiegelman's graphic novel MAUS. In a work where so much of the Holocaust has been changed in some
way – after all, there are no humans in this version, only cats, mice, dogs, and pigs – we must wonder why Spiegelman chooses to retain this
well–known emblem. To remove it entirely or replace it with another, inventedsymbol would completely disorient the reader; but some might claim
that this is the effect at which Spiegelman is aiming. I believe it is not. Rather, Spiegelman uses the swastika to subtly remind the reader that while the
guise in which events are presented may be somewhat unfamiliar, the novel is still a narrative of the Holocaust.
The swastika, it has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But these changes help to make it more stern, more authoritarian, more evil – a testament to Spiegelman's ability to adapt this already emotionally
loaded symbol.
It is with the coming of the swastika that the graphic novel becomes "dark". I mean this in two ways. First, the first chapter of the novel is rather light
in its message, focusing on the beginning of the relationship between Vladek and Anja. The swastika first appears on the frontispiece to the second
chapter, ironically titled "The Honeymoon". After this point, the totalitarianism begins. The presence of the swastika is strongest at the first time
Vladek sees it. He states, on first seeing it, "It was the beginning of 1938 – before the war – hanging high in the center of town, it was a Nazi flag. Here
was the first time I saw, with my own eyes, the swastika." On the next page, the swastika becomes detached from the flag and floats like an ominous
moon on the horizon behind the scene of a pogrom. Spiegelman here is milking the emotive power of the swastika for all that it is worth.
But perhaps the most interesting use of the swastika in MAUS is to be found towards the end of the book. Anja and Vladek are attempting to hide
when they come to a crossroads, and the roads meet in the form of a swastika. Vladek tells Art: "Anja and I didn't have where to go. We walked in the
direction of Sosnowiec – but where to go?! It was nowhere we had

Exchange of Information Between Sumer Egypt and India
Civilizations in the past developed many of their own characteristics and traits. New religions were brought about, as well as cultural behavior.
Inventions were created and practices were discovered to help in daily life. People also fashioned ways to communicate with each other. As these
societies grew, they exchanged much of this knowledge with later civilizations. The people ofSumer, Egypt, and India had individual beliefs on culture

The Sumerians feared that humans had little control over daily life which is why they possessed a strong polytheistic faith. They assumed that
there were gods with humanlike emotions for virtually every occurrence in nature. The sun was a god, as well as the moon and the stars; also, the
crops grew every season because a male god was mating with his goddess wife. The Sumerian society was divided into four categories based on
wealth and power. These were nobles, free clients of the nobility, commoners, and slaves. Obviously, the nobility controlled the most land and was
the dominating force empowering the other members. The commoners were free citizens who remained literate and without power, but were
independent of the nobles. Slaves may have been foreigners or prisoners of war who were subject to unfair treatment by their owners, but were
allowed to borrow money and engage in trade. Slaves often bought their freedom. Since the Sumerians were among the first civilizations to show
evidence of writing, this era became known as the Protoliterate period. Their basic form of writing was referred to as Cuneiform and consisted of
pictograms that were formed by wedges pressed into wet clay. These pictograms later grew into ideograms that depicted thoughts and ideas. For

The Natural Evolution Of Readability And How It 's...
Visual communication is the interaction of meanings and thoughts through visual stimuli. Usually in 2D visual communication covers a wide range of
genres including art, ideograms, typography, photography, illustration, graphic design and many others.
In this essay I will try to evidence the natural evolution of readability and legibility in visual communication and how it's progression reached its
pinnacle before the beginning of post–modernism. I will look as far back as the first known instances of visual communication, the cave paintings, and
target key elements to the evolution and progression of visual communication including ideograms, the alphabet, scribes, the printing press, slave ship
diagrams, the Renaissance, Leonardo Da Vinci and the Avantgarde, before concentrating on the change from Modernism to post

essay readability refers to the ease in which we can read the piece and legibility discuses the message it is trying to convey.
It is my View that Visual communication, for the most part; naturally progressed over time due to the influence of previous developments. I believe
that this reached its pinnacle during modernism and experienced a drastic change during post–modernism.
The main theory that i will be trying to evidence is the natural progression and evolution of readability and legibility in visual communication until the

Temple and shrine are both used interchangeably because many visitors to Japan can't tell the difference. To point out, using these terms
interchangeably is like saying a church and synagogue are equivalent. In Japan, there are two major religions practiced by the Japanese people. A
shrine is where Shinto is practiced and Buddhism is practiced at a temple.
Both Shinto and Buddhism date back to thousands of years. Shinto, a spiritual principle, is an ancient religion of Japan based on the belief that powerful

In Japan, most people practice both faiths ambiguously as they are nearly parallel to one another. Shinto primarily focuses on earthly matters, and
shrines are often used to host weddings or pray for good fortune. Whereas Buddhism is considered the religion of spiritual beliefs and practices.
Temples usually host funerals and are a place to pray for ancestors.
You are probably at a Shinto shrine if you cross the threshold of a torii gate, see a pair of guardians (usually dogs or lions) sitting on each side of the
entrance, and cleanse your mouth and hands at a purification fountain before prayer. Shinto shrines have the suffix "jingu", such as Ise Jingu.
The name of Buddhist temples use the suffix "ji", such as Todaiji. You may find yourself at a Japanese temple if you see an image of the Buddha, as
this is always housed at a Buddhist temple. A large incense burner is usually located at the front of the temple; it is believed that the smoke has healing

Mycenaean civilization existed from roughly 600 B.C to 1100 B.C. and was located on Greece's mainland; they were a forceful and active
civilization, who engaged in aspects of trade and some piracy throughout Europe. The Mycenaean's were well known for their military approach and
war tactics allowing them to grow larger and stronger by conquering and taking over other civilizations. The Minoan civilization influenced the
Mycenaean's greatly due to being so close geographically yet this also had an impact on why they were so different. The differences between both

Communication and Why We Need Effective Communication
Introduction
With every interaction, whether active or passive, we find ourselves communicating with other people. Even our silence connotes some intention, which
others may interpret at their discretion. Whether by artifact or by attendance, every human being constantly participates in the process of communication
Defining Communication
Communication means exchange of ideas, views, opinion, understanding, feelings, emotions, facts or information between two or more persons by any
sources or medium.

The importance of communication is best understood when there is a lack of it. Listening, understanding and interpreting are as much integral to
communication as words – verbal, written or gestured. How we communicate or express ourselves goes a great way towards determining how our
expressions are interpreted.
To quote Karl Popper, "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood".
Faulty or incomplete communication can completely mar the purpose of communicating and may result in damaging consequences. This is where
understanding the importance of communication and communicating the right way comes into picture. Not everyone is equally endowed with the
ability to effectively express himself and this is where the importance of communication skills can be truly fathomed. The importance of
communication is equal in every walk of like, be it in personal, professional or social life.
Components of Communication
Communication is effective when a concise and clear message is delivered well, received successfully, and understood fully. The process of
communication has the following distinct components: the sender the message the medium the receiver feedback. The Communication Process

Prehistoric Western Art Influences
Prehistoric Western Art Influences
Ryan Hernandez
Lamar Community College
Abstract
Art has many styles, shapes, forms, and meanings. The way people perceive art is very different from one another. Even though some art pieces are
very similar, prehistoric art focused on the human species and the human form. The artists had minimal influence which had an effect on their creative
process. Early prehistoric art was based on humanity. The Venus of Willendorf focused on the value of human form. The artist wanted to represent
how life was at the time. The Lascaux cave paintings share the same meaning. Whoever the artist was wanted to capture what was important to humans
at the time. Animals were a very big part of their diet and their life which is why they focused on that in their paintings. Art has many styles, shapes,

Language In Carr's Is Google Making USupid?
In reality, language can not allow us see into the future; however, it does control a lot of aspects of our mind and manipulates the way we think.
Before the internet gained its popularity, people had more concentration and patience for tasks, now it is difficult for most to focus on one task for a
long period of time. This is because, the language used on the internet is different from the complex language that is found in novels. Online reading
requires simple and efficient reading habits which conditions the mind to think that way, causing people to alter the way they read and therefore think.
Consequently, language is changing people's minds to behave more and more like a computer. The past ability to form connections between text and

In this story the main character, Louise, has to learn the alien language from square one. From there she eventually begins to realize that it is affecting
how she thinks. This adds on to what was talked about in the previous paragraph, how language is altering how the brain functions. Carr references
Wolf from "Is Google Making us Stupid?" and his opinion on how language has to be learnt. In this story, it demonstrates how exactly learning
language can affect your mind. A quote from Maryanne Wolf included in Carr's article is, "Experiments demonstrate that readers of ideograms, such as
the Chinese, develop a mental circuitry for reading that is very different from the circuitry found in those of us whose written language employs an
alphabet."(Carr) Language has the ability to physically change the composition of the brain depending on what type of language is learnt.(Carr) When
Louise learns to read the new alien language, which was written in characters similar to the Chinese ideograms, her brain changed just as if she were
learning Chinese. Due to these similarities between the two languages, the alien representation of language shows how language is able to change how
we think, exerting control over our thoughts. The alien language therefore demonstrates, on a large scale, how language has control over the formation
of new thought processes, changing the way people

The Importance Of Technology In Education
Education is also another field in which technology has expanded. It has opened up thousands of resources for students to access while at school and
even at home. "In the past, teachers relied on actual meetings to interact with their students. It was only during physical meetings that teachers could
deliver learning materials and instructions to learners. However, nowadays, this kind of absolute dependence on physical meetings is gone. It is easy
for teachers and learners to stay in touch via email and other internet–based services such as file–sharing and Instant Messaging applications." (Raza,
2017) IPad's, Chromebook's, cell phones, and laptops are most of the electronics that can be found in any level of schooling present day. In the mid
/late 1900's, there were not many resources for people to get information from. Limited resources can affect the way people think or act. Back then,
most students were coming up with ideas on their own and hand writ almost every piece of school work assigned. Now–a–days, we can look up any
questions or idea and the internet has the answer for us and have computers to type our work. Putting technology into classrooms has given every
student the ability to learn, when textbooks reach limited kids. Teachers are also affected by our technology. Now that students have the access to the
internet, teachers have to become more diligent towards putting assignments together. It has become easier to do homework because the kids have the
ability to calculate their answers for math. These resources give us different perspectives from other people, however, our critical thinking skills have
decreased over time. Critical thinking skills are necessary for education because it allows the student to become independent, analyze information, and
think on their own. Cell phones in the classroom are having a negative effect to student's minds because it does not give he or she the ability to have a
thought. These devices have not only result in education but also the way we communicate. All types of visual and audio communication have been
improved and people now have the capability of contacting people around the globe. "The alarm wakes you up early in the morning at precisely the

The Aztecs Essay
The Aztecs encountered the conquistadors, the leader of the group was a Spanish named Hernan CortГ©s. In 1521, the Aztecs caused their enemies to
suffer major losses. Though the Aztecs didn't all die to the war, the Aztecs mostly died out due to the diseases that the Spaniards brought over.
The Aztecs had pyramids comparable to the Egyptians, but on top of these pyramids the Aztecs built temples. These temples on the pyramids were
used to worship the Aztecs' three more important gods, Huitzilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca. But not only did they have house shrines, they
also had schools, sacred pools, altars, gardens, and dormitories. Some temples had arsenals inside and ball courts.
There were also large buildings, like the Emperor's palace. The palace consisted of four main rooms, balls courts, a ceremonial plaza, and even

In the Badianus Manuscript, there is a codex that explained how to use plants and trees to create treatments and ailments which contained over 180
recipes. Herbalists that used these recipes were called the 'tictil'. Also these recipes actually had some scientific backing behind them. Another
advancement was the calendars the Aztecs used. These calendars were called Tonalpohualli (day count–260 days) and Xiuhpohualli (solar year–365
days ). Even though these calendars had different day counts, they coincided after 52 years.
The Aztecs had a writing system consisted of ideograms and pictograms, and was very similar to the Mayan system. To understand these pictograms
you needed to also understand Aztec cultural conventions. An example of a pictogram would be a corpse wrapped in bandages, which represented
death. This would be a reason that the Aztecs were better than the Incas since the Incas didn't have a writing system at all. Aztec literature was
written in paper made of Agave plant fiber and were folded like a fan. These books were called codices (or a

Is Google Making Us Stupid? by Nicholas Carr
Nicholas Carr is an author that focuses on the real word changing. His main focuses are the changes in technology, business and the culture. One of his
essay's, "Is Google Making Us Stupid," focuses on whether or not the Internet is creating problems within today's society, and with our learning
abilities in general. Carr provides detailed examples from Google, research teams and our own history to show the impact it has on today's life and the
minds' of Internet users.
This essay is very convincing to how Google and the Internet in general are changing the framework of our minds. He states that, "My mind isn't going–

If someone isn't challenging our minds, and trying to get us back on the right track then how will we ever come back from this? It may be a more
efficient way for readers to get the news, but it is a less effective way for us to increase our concentration again.
Towards the beginning of Carr's essay he contradicted himself by saying, "Research that one required days in the stacks or periodical rooms of
libraries can now be done in minutes." (371) Within the next paragraph Carr states, "The advantages of having immediate access to such an incredibly
rich store of information are many." It is not Google alone, nor just the Internet that we need to worry about, it's the technological advancement
overall. Throughout history people have criticized technological advancements, but look past the endless possibilities it created. Now we are only one
click away from information that we need, instead of looking at the information that we use to carry inside our heads. Frederick Taylor created a
system that created the best outcome for factories but the Internet is a machine designed for the best outcome, "the perfect algorithm, to carry out every
mental movement of what we've come to describe as knowledge work." (375)

The Maya Civilization Of The Aztec And The Inca
Around 2000 B.C, small farming villages started to appear across Central America ("Maya Civilization"). This was the start of the Maya civilization.
There were other civilizations in the area, like the Aztec, who were in Mexico, and the Inca, who were in the Peru area of South America. The Maya
were a greater civilization than the Aztec or the Inca because their achievements in astronomy, math, language, architecture, and engineering. These
achievements in those areas set them apart from the Aztec and the Inca.

to 300 C.E. The Maya had used a system of pictograms and ideograms, along with a large set of phonetic signs ("Maya"). The Aztec had a system
like the Maya had, a system that used pictograms ("Aztec System of Writing: Pictograms"). However, the Inca did not have a writing system. The
Inca had Quipu, a specific way of knotting ropes to keep records (Hirst, K. Kris).
The Maya were also great mathematicians. They are credited with having a more sophisticated number system than anyone else in the world at the
time. They understood and used the value of zero at a time as early as 36 B.C.E. This is remarkable because not very many civilizations understood
the concept of zero. They also had a number system with place values. It was a base–20 system. There is evidence of the Maya working with sums that
go up to the millions (Mastin, Luke). As stated before, they also calculated the length of the year more accurately than the calculations used in the
Gregorian calendar. These achievements are incredible, especially since they were isolated from the rest of the world until a while later.
The next innovation of the Maya is their ingenuity in architecture. One of their most famous structures is the Pyramid of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza. It
is 24 meters tall, around 7 stories. There are stair steps on all four sides. During the equinox, the pyramid creates the figure of a snake that connects

Social Class System Of The Mesoamerican Empire
The Aztecs are known as the last powerful Mesoamerican Empire. The Aztecs were once a nomadic tribe and during the 13th century, found a home
in central Mexico. At their peak, between 1345 and 1521, The Aztecs controlled 80,000 square miles throughout central Mexico. The Aztec empire had
a very intricate social class system. There were two main social classes in Aztec culture. First the nobility or pilli, then the common people or
macehualli. The nobility had many special privileges. People of nobility received a higher level of education, wore ostentatious clothing and
decorated their home. Nobility were also able to hold government positions. Not all nobility were leaders or relatives of other noblemen. People
could move up ranks by distinction. Commoners were mostly hired to work farms but were able to support themselves. There were also slaves, but
unlike many other cultures, the slaves were treated generally well. Slavery was not hereditary, therefore, the children of a slave were always free. A
slave could also purchase freedom if he had enough money. If a person was in an economic hardship, he could put himself into slavery. In Aztec
culture, education was mandatory regardless of gender or caste. Boys usually received a more extensive education than girls. Girls were taught how to
cook and manage a home, but they were also taught how to economically run a home. Women had power in Aztec society. There were two main classes

Compare And Contrast Hebrew And Phoenician Alphabets
Most people in ancient history gained influence over other people and became significant in history by means of military conquest and the
establishment of empires. By contrast, the Phoenicians and the Hebrews shaped the development of world history in less aggressive ways. The
Phoenicians established trading posts and colonies throughout the Mediterranean Sea and all the way to the Atlantic coast of what we now know as
Portugal. More importantly, however, they created a phonetic system of transcribing–meaning that they generated an alphabet. This was known as an
overwhelming achievement in regards to culture. Prior to this, writers of hieroglyphics and cuneiform had established signs that had been used to
signify sounds, however they were always utilized with a larger number of ideograms.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This system vastly simplified reading and writing and then spread among other people as a sensible means of communication and record keeping. The
Phoenicians then modified this simpler technique for their own language, and then spread it throughout the Mediterranean. The Greeks then modified
this new alphabet for their own language. Later, the Romans grounded their alphabet on Greek. The Romans' alphabet is actually the script that we
use to write English in today's world. Alphabets built on the Phoenician alphabet were formed in the Persian Empire and shaped the basis of Arabic,
Hebrew, and other alphabets of Central and South Asia. In short, the system that was conceived by normal people and later spread by Phoenician
merchants is the source of most of our world's phonetic alphabets that are in use

Five Basic Characteristics of Early Civilization Essay
The five basic characteristics of early civilizations are Advanced Cities, Specialized Workers, Complex Institutions, Record Keeping, and Advanced
Technologies. The first characteristic, {advanced cities}, is considered the birth place of civilizations. An advanced city is a center or trade and
commerce for a large area. In these cities trade is the lifeline. Goods are traded in a place called the Bazaar. Since there was no currency at the time,
people had to use a Barter system which was a way of trading goods and services without using any money.

Institutions are the long lasting patterns of organizations within a community. An example would be government, this is necessary to maintain and
control large populations of people. The first government was a monarchy. Another institution is Religion, almost all early religions but one were
basically polytheistic. Next would be the Economy, this institution is based around trade. And lastly, Education, this is trained and specialized workers
to replace those who died off. Another complex institution is the Temples. These served at first as the centers of government and trade as well as
religion. In the beginning religious leaders ruled the cities.
Record Keeping, this is the third characteristic of early civilization. Complex life required records for things such as taxes and laws which needed
to be written down, this is called codified. Scribes are professional record keepers and historians. Cuneiform is the Samaritan form of writing. This
was the earliest form of writing ever discovered. Also used was a stylus, this is a sharpened reed or strong stick, wedge shaped point used by scribes
to write on clay tablets. There are four steps to the process of writing, those would be: Pictogram, ideogram, phonogram, and the

case to court. The book mixes history with graphic art and presents a new and interesting at a part of history that is not very well known. Overall Getz
recreates the story of Abina to show how history is constantly adapting as more and more stories are being unearthed and heard. Abina and the

many ways. In the book Abina is a young woman, probably around the age of twelve, though this is implied, Getz seems to create a strong young
woman who is sure of herself and of who she is. This is not to say that the story is invalid, but rather that Getz's own wishes for the woman Abina
was carried over into his history. As with most books, the history is biased. Throughout the first section of the book Getz's own feelings and ideas
about the story are transferred into the story of Abina. This is even more apparent at the end of the graphic narrative where Getz himself appears,
telling the reader that new history can always be found and no voice is ever too

The Humble Comma
In Pico Iyer's essay, "In Praise of the Humble Comma", the author examines the importance of punctuation in language. He specifically points out the
use of the comma in writing and how it lacks respect. Even though it is such a small thing, the comma helps convey different emotions, maintain
structure, and creates fluidity. He shows that punctuation is needed to understand a writer's meaning and the overall message trying to be conveyed. He
tries to persuade his audience to appreciate and to understand the grace and beauty of punctuation, especially the comma. Iyer uses comparisons,
personification, metaphors, and imagery, to stress the value of punctuation.
Iyer uses different kind of comparisons to underline the necessity of punctuation. He compares the comma to small things such as jewelry and to large
thing such as God, to show the significance of it in everyday life. Iyer implies that punctuation is the most important part of language, without actually
stating it. In first paragraph, he compares the comma to the gods, because just like them, the comma gives and takes away breath. The gods can create
humans and give them breath, but also can kill humans and take away their breath. Iyer states, "The gods, they say, ... Show more content on

notation. Music without notation is music without its true passion and soul. He finishes describing the metaphor by using auditory imagery. He says
that punctuation, "sores the music in our minds, gets our thoughts moving to the rhythm of our hearts." By using detailed imagery, Iyer evokes a

How Technology Has Improved With Better Mobility And More...
As the technology developed and matured, hand–held devices have been significantly improved with better mobility and more functions: when I was
young, my father used to have a mobile cell phone which was very heavy – its weight was over 1 lb., which was at least three times heavier than the
newest iPhone. Also, besides the basic phone–calling function, many new communication applications – text messaging, social networks including
Facebook and Instagram, and online video chat tools like Skype – are integrated with the mobile devices. From using a simple handy–phone to a
well–functioned smart phone, my communication style had also changed a lot. The first hand–held mobile device for communication is a personal
handy–phone which is named "Xiao Ling Tong" in China. I received that in 2008 when I was in middle school. The device itself looks like a mini
mobile phone, but its functions were limited to phone–calling, text messaging and some simple games. Also, it did not have an individual phone
number – it was connected with the fixed–line telephone and they share the same phone number. At that time, the way I was using my handy–phone
was to contact my parents through phone–calling when I went out. I did not use that to communicate with my friends or classmates frequently as most
of them did not own mobile devices. However, it was not as convenient as a true smart phone: it did not have roaming service, which meant that it
could only be used locally. In 2010, I went to

Blindness And Sight In Oedipus By Sophocles

  • 1. Blindness And Sight In Oedipus By Sophocles Most people believe eyes are the window to the soul, but in this ancient Greek tragedy, eyes can be an indicator to someone's intelligence level. The blind do not always have the power to see into the future just as those with sight are not always aware of their present day predicaments, but in Ancient Greek, both of those are accurate. Sight and ignorance go hand–in–hand as well as blindness and knowledge do in the story Oedipus by Sophocles. Sophocles uses irony to emphasize positives and negatives for two men, Oedipus, King of Thebes and Tiresias, local Oracle. Oedipus has sight but lacks the ability to fully comprehend situations in multiple scenes. He is unable to interpret many clues given to him along the way, ultimately leading to his wife's (and mother's) death along with his own downfall as well. Oedipus requested Tiresias to help him stop the plague by figuring out who killed Laius, the past king of Thebes. When Tiresias was hesitant to tell Oedipus that he was the true murderer, he recanted all the praise he gave the prophet and said, "You will not explain / what you understand, but rather intend / to betray us and destroy the city. / ... You worst of wicked men!" (Sophocles 348–350, 353). With this, the wise Tiresias said, "You have found fault with my anger, but your own, / living within you, you did not see, but blamed me" (Sophocles 356–357). His anger for not receiving what he asked of Tiresias was blinding, even though in the end it brings his Fate to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Culture of Ancient Egypt Language and System of writing The system of writing that the ancient Egyptians used is called Hieroglyphics coming from the two Greek words hieros meaning holy and glyphe meaning writing. Hieroglyphics are a series of pictures drawn from one side of the page to the other. Hieroglyphics can be read and written from left to right or right to left depending upon which way the human and animal characters are facing. If the characters face the left then you read from the left to the right. Each hieroglyph represents a single sound, but as the Egyptians wrote sentences and words they took advantage of the vowels so they are still trying to figure them out today. There are two basic types of hieroglyphs ideograms and phonograms. Often the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Government in Ancient Egypt was ran on theocracy, which meant that there was a ruler who was recognized as deity. The pharaoh couldn't run this all by himself so he had a hierarchy of rulers and leaders below him who ran different parts of the government. This would mean that the pharaoh would command the hierarchy and they would fulfil their roles and jobs as priest, scribes, vizier etc. Reliable supply of food and water The Ancient Egyptians are indebted to the Nile River because it has supplied them with water and nutrients in the soil for them to grow the crops that they need to survive for many centuries. The predictability of the Nile's flooding allowed the Egyptians to inquire deep into the agriculture of their land in order for them to grow all these crops such as the grains, fruits and vegetables that they used to eat. The Egyptian diet however revolved heavily around several primary crops, especial cereals and barley. The Egyptians would also grow Einkorn Emmer where grown to make bread. Pulses, beans, lentils, later chickpeas and fava beans were also grown. Root crop such as radishes, onions, and garlics were grown along with salad crops like lettuce and parsley. The Egyptians artwork motive was fruit, suggesting that this was also a major part of agricultural living. • 3. How Did Ancient Egypt Created A Form Of Communication The ancient Egyptians created a form of communication by creating symbols that were put together into words, called hieroglyphs. They represented both objects and ideas, and were enscripted and carved on walls of temples and pyramids, usually made by the pharaoh to show laws, rules, or announcements. This type of writing held secret messages, and was hard to decode. The hieroglyphic system used in ancient Egypt had around 750 basic symbols, called glyphs. At first they used picture writing, and the pictures represented an object, pictograms, but later the pictures represented ideas, known as ideograms. At last, the pictures represented both objects and ideas, but also the sound of a word. Each picture was formed by a unique sound and image. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Carr's Writing Style Technology evolves with time and changes the perspectives and culture of the society that it permeates, the internet is no exception in its role as a digital information highway of the modern world. Nicholas Carr uses data, examples, and repetition to structure his analysis of the above phenomenon, in his article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?". With a varied collection of data, Carr illustrates the effects on reading styles due to the use of the internet. He sites qualitative data such as the changes traditional media like newspapers have had to change to keep readership in the digital age. In the beginning, he structures the opening paragraphs around his changing habits of reading and research. He expresses concern at his mental expectation that he can "take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles" (Paragraph 4). He then widens out to the consequences others experienced with the prevalence of technology. The differences between the writing systems, ideograms employ and "develop a mental circuitry for reading that is very different from the circuitry found in those of us whose written language employs an alphabet. The variations extend across many regions of the brain, including those that govern such essential cognitive functions as memory and the interpretation of visual and auditory stimuli" (paragraph 10). Through a consistent repetition, he lays out key facts and provides the reader with the incentive to consider the changes that they've experienced. By the conclusion of his paper, a reader can realize that their view of what is human and what makes a machine have blurred or even switched places. Carr's writing explains where humans are through data, how the effects are taking place from the individual to the global world, and finally the haunting illustration of where humanity is more cruel and unfeeling than the machines. • 8. Google Making USupid Logos In "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" (2008), Nicholas Carr maintains that the advent of the Internet has produced a shallow generation of information customers who lack the ability to deeply engage with and critically think about a text. To support the argument, Carr draws on personal and historical anecdotes and one scientific study. The purpose of Carr's article is to open a dialogue about the potentially adverse effects the Internet could have on humans' cognitive processes. Carr establishes an informal relationship with the audience, who are generally well–educated, upper–middle class individuals. Because the audience is educated, they are very capable of critically thinking. However, Carr's use of other rhetorical strategies disarms them and detracts from the dearth of logos. His essay is rife with numerous unfounded premises, poor evidence, and logical fallacies. Because of this lack of logos is in a way compensated by including numerous appeals to ethos and pathos, the audience is likely to find the article persuasive unless they re–read the article deeply with a critical lens. Carr's thesis is founded on two main premises: first, the population's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The study has several validity issues: first, there was no control group, nor was there a pre–test. This means that there was no baseline to compare the results to, nor was there a control group to determine if the change was a result of the variable in question (the Internet). Second, the study only examined journal databases, which are frequented by students and researchers more often than the general population. Therefore, the sample is not representative of the general population and the results cannot be generalized to the broader population, which Carr did. Because this methodologically unsound study was the only one he cited, it is evident the essay lacks logos. Therefore, the first premise cannot stand from a logical ... With the work of Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" viewers see aspects of the formalist concepts while comparing Eisenstein interpretation of artistic cinematography. In "Eisenstein Cinematic Principle and Ideogram–Dialectical Approach" the article discusses the way cinematographic traits help revolutionize the way we view different forms graphically. Scribes learned how to read and write from their fathers, since becoming a scribe was passed down to their sons, as well as attending a "scribe–in–training" school which is attached to a temple or the palace (Kraft). Wealthier young–scribes often had a tutor, but most learned by continually copying texts and rehearsing stories, often about manners and religious doctrine (Kraft). Possibly the biggest contributions it has made came from their culture, their art, and religion. Without these contributions, modern societies might not have been as advanced as they are today. Ancient Egypt made a lot of cultural contributions to the western world through writing, architecture, agriculture, and astronomy. With the invention of hieroglyphics, the Egyptians were able to leave behind stories of their culture in creative symbols. • 19. Essay on The Swastika in MAUS The Swastika in MAUS The image of the swastika pervades Arthur Spiegelman's graphic novel MAUS. In a work where so much of the Holocaust has been changed in some way – after all, there are no humans in this version, only cats, mice, dogs, and pigs – we must wonder why Spiegelman chooses to retain this well–known emblem. To remove it entirely or replace it with another, inventedsymbol would completely disorient the reader; but some might claim that this is the effect at which Spiegelman is aiming. I believe it is not. Rather, Spiegelman uses the swastika to subtly remind the reader that while the guise in which events are presented may be somewhat unfamiliar, the novel is still a narrative of the Holocaust. The swastika, it has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But these changes help to make it more stern, more authoritarian, more evil – a testament to Spiegelman's ability to adapt this already emotionally loaded symbol. It is with the coming of the swastika that the graphic novel becomes "dark". I mean this in two ways. First, the first chapter of the novel is rather light in its message, focusing on the beginning of the relationship between Vladek and Anja. The swastika first appears on the frontispiece to the second chapter, ironically titled "The Honeymoon". After this point, the totalitarianism begins. The presence of the swastika is strongest at the first time Vladek sees it. He states, on first seeing it, "It was the beginning of 1938 – before the war – hanging high in the center of town, it was a Nazi flag. Here was the first time I saw, with my own eyes, the swastika." On the next page, the swastika becomes detached from the flag and floats like an ominous moon on the horizon behind the scene of a pogrom. Spiegelman here is milking the emotive power of the swastika for all that it is worth. But perhaps the most interesting use of the swastika in MAUS is to be found towards the end of the book. Anja and Vladek are attempting to hide when they come to a crossroads, and the roads meet in the form of a swastika. Vladek tells Art: "Anja and I didn't have where to go. The Sumerian society was divided into four categories based on wealth and power. These were nobles, free clients of the nobility, commoners, and slaves. Obviously, the nobility controlled the most land and was the dominating force empowering the other members. The commoners were free citizens who remained literate and without power, but were independent of the nobles. Slaves may have been foreigners or prisoners of war who were subject to unfair treatment by their owners, but were allowed to borrow money and engage in trade. Slaves often bought their freedom. Since the Sumerians were among the first civilizations to show evidence of writing, this era became known as the Protoliterate period. Now–a–days, we can look up any questions or idea and the internet has the answer for us and have computers to type our work. Putting technology into classrooms has given every student the ability to learn, when textbooks reach limited kids. Teachers are also affected by our technology. In short, the system that was conceived by normal people and later spread by Phoenician merchants is the source of most of our world's phonetic alphabets that are in use ... As time goes on history changes because of new discoveries that alter the way things have been and shed new light on what had been considered true. In Abina and the Important Men: A Graphic History historian Trevor Getz introduces a new voice into the story of British controlled WestAfrica in the late nineteenth century. Getz and Liz Clarke, an illustrator, bring forth the story of Abina, a young West African woman, who was wrongfully enslaved and took her case to court. The book mixes history with graphic art and presents a new and interesting at a part of history that is not very well known. Overall Getz recreates the story of Abina to show how history is constantly adapting as more and more stories are being unearthed and heard. Abina and the Important Men combines graphic illustrations with real history to create a contemporary book that is both compelling and well informed. The book is split into five different sections; the graphic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the graphic illustrations Abina' story is described in detail. Though the story is interesting and admirable, it seems to be exaggerated in many ways. In the book Abina is a young woman, probably around the age of twelve, though this is implied, Getz seems to create a strong young woman who is sure of herself and of who she is. This is not to say that the story is invalid, but rather that Getz's own wishes for the woman Abina was carried over into his history. As with most books, the history is biased. Throughout the first section of the book Getz's own feelings and ideas about the story are transferred into the story of Abina. This is even more apparent at the end of the graphic narrative where Getz himself appears, telling the reader that new history can always be found and no voice is ever too ... • 40. The Humble Comma In Pico Iyer's essay, "In Praise of the Humble Comma", the author examines the importance of punctuation in language. He specifically points out the use of the comma in writing and how it lacks respect. Even though it is such a small thing, the comma helps convey different emotions, maintain structure, and creates fluidity. He shows that punctuation is needed to understand a writer's meaning and the overall message trying to be conveyed. He tries to persuade his audience to appreciate and to understand the grace and beauty of punctuation, especially the comma. Iyer uses comparisons, personification, metaphors, and imagery, to stress the value of punctuation. Iyer uses different kind of comparisons to underline the necessity of punctuation. He compares the comma to small things such as jewelry and to large thing such as God, to show the significance of it in everyday life. Iyer implies that punctuation is the most important part of language, without actually stating it. In first paragraph, he compares the comma to the gods, because just like them, the comma gives and takes away breath. The gods can create humans and give them breath, but also can kill humans and take away their breath. Iyer states, "The gods, they say, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He states, "punctuation is the notation in the sheet music of our words, telling us where to rest, or when to raise our voices". Just like the notation in a piece of music, punctuation creates fluidity and helps brings about different emotions. Language without punctuation compares to music without notation. He says that punctuation, "sores the music in our minds, gets our thoughts moving to the rhythm of our hearts." By using detailed imagery, Iyer evokes a feeling of joy and calmness in his ... • 41. How Technology Has Improved With Better Mobility And More... As the technology developed and matured, hand–held devices have been significantly improved with better mobility and more functions: when I was young, my father used to have a mobile cell phone which was very heavy – its weight was over 1 lb., which was at least three times heavier than the newest iPhone. Also, besides the basic phone–calling function, many new communication applications – text messaging, social networks including Facebook and Instagram, and online video chat tools like Skype – are integrated with the mobile devices. From using a simple handy–phone to a well–functioned smart phone, my communication style had also changed a lot. The first hand–held mobile device for communication is a personal handy–phone which is named "Xiao Ling Tong" in China. I received that in 2008 when I was in middle school. The device itself looks like a mini mobile phone, but its functions were limited to phone–calling, text messaging and some simple games. Also, it did not have an individual phone number – it was connected with the fixed–line telephone and they share the same phone number. At that time, the way I was using my handy–phone was to contact my parents through phone–calling when I went out. I did not use that to communicate with my friends or classmates frequently as most of them did not own mobile devices. However, it was not as convenient as a true smart phone: it did not have roaming service, which meant that it could only be used locally. In 2010, I went to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
