Norm Violations Are A Form Of Actions
Norm violations are a form of actions that do not seem right to some people. Let's say that you are in
a public place, you are expected to act respectful and normal. Norms describes the expectation of a
behavior. (James M. Henslin) One can perform a norm violation by doing the opposite of that, like
invading personal space. There can be different reactions to violated norms which sociologists call
sanctions. (Henslin) Mores, folkways, and values revolve around norms as well.
Mores and folkways are two different types of norms. Folkway being one norm that is not really
being enforced (Henslin). It can be not smiling when a stranger gives you a smile or, not waving
back when someone waves at you. Mores is the opposite of that, it involves something for the most
part everyone hates i.e. killing, robbing, raping (Henslin). Specifically it can be a pedophile. One
can say that many parents across the United States dislike pedophiles. Parents do not want their kids
experiencing getting touched by someone older than them in inappropriately or even worse rape
them. Now that would be a negative sanction. Values can be a person's ideal way on how to behave
in certain places or their principles, just like ethics, beliefs, or standards (Henslin). Values can vary
in cultures or religions as well. For example, when it comes to the LGBT community, which is also
known as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, I believe that everyone deserves to
be happy with whomever they

Folkway Violation In Line
Excuse me, but can I go next in line, I am in such a hurry. At a young age, it was taught to be
impolite to cut a line and to wait patiently behind the person in front of you. In many cases in lines
at the grocery store, ATM, airports or the drug store, it is the social norm to wait until it is your turn.
"Americans spend roughly 37 billion hours each year waiting in line. The dominant cost of waiting
is an emotional one: stress, boredom, that nagging sensation that one's life is slipping away" (Stone.
Alex, 2012). In this essay, I will explore my folkway violation of a minor social norm of cutting in
line. In most cases people ask on a regular basis if they can cut ahead in line after asking to do so
and most individuals give the go ahead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I once again picked up one item and walked to the line, hoping that I did not run into anyone from
the prior store. I once again stood in line for a few minutes, looking at my watch and mumbling to
myself, gosh, I am not going to make this appointment. The person in front of me, looked at me,
turned back around not saying anything, so I went around her and tap the customer shoulder of the
person ahead of her, and in my sweetest voice asked if I can jump ahead of her to check out, due to
me having an appointment that I really needed to make. Once again, the customer said sure, and the
customer behind her gave me a look that was of complete annoyance. If looks could kill, I would
have been laying on the floor. The reaction to my violation of cutting lines in these stores and not
sticking to society's norm of waiting patiently for my turn was really uncomfortable, embarrassing,
and mortifying. The fear that someone would chastise and make a scene, to draw attention to what I
was doing was nerve wrecking.
"Perhaps the biggest influence on our feelings about lines, though, has to do with our perception of
fairness. When it comes to lines, the universally acknowledged standard is first come, first served:
any deviation is, to most, a mark of iniquity, and can lead to violent queue rage" (Stone, Alex.2012).
This deviant behavior of not conforming to the social

The Laws Of Social Control
In our lifetime we are brought upon the normality in our lives. And once we someone doing or
dressed in an abnormality way in public we are usually drawn to them. We tend to think of why they
are dressed like that or why they are doing that particular thing. Folkways are the traditional
behavior or way of life a particular community or group of people. Just like in life we get used to
things being the same or normal each day these are norms. A norm is something usual, typical, or
standard. Our society is used to things being like a folkway or a norm day to day lifestyle. This
lifestyle is considered a mores. Mores are the essential or characteristics customs and conventions of
a community. To someone that does something out of the norm there must be a reason or a meaning
to them thats important to them. This is their value, a value is the regard that something is held to
deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Sanctions are the mechanisms of social
control. Sanctions are the opposed to form of internal control, like cultural norms and values,
sociologists consider sanctions a form of external control. The norm that I violated originally was , I
pretended to have a strange addiction to deodorant. What i had done was, I got a brand new bottle of
deodorant and took it all out. And cleaned and washed the bottle until there was none left. I then got

Body Modification, Folkways And Mores
Body Modification, Folkways and Mores Our book defines sociology as, "the systematic or
scientific study of human society and social behavior, from mass culture to small groups and
individual interactions (Ferris)." So, quite literally sociologists study individual, group and cultural
behaviors and actions as a way to assess society as a whole. Body modification is any alteration to a
person 's body from its natural state. Practices of body modification include but are not limited to
piercings, tattoos, scarification and implants. Individuals engage in body modification for health
benefits, cultural expectations and the ever changing standard of beauty. Sociologist are interested in
studying body modification because by researching the types of body modifications individuals,
groups and cultures engage in, in specific areas they will can better understand society. With social
imagination sociologist can connect body modification to social folkways and mores in a given
society. Social imagination allows connections to be made between what people believe is an
individual choice, want or desire to social standards and norms. Sociologist may also find body
modification interesting because they can study how societies such as the United States can
influence the different cultures within the society. United States societal norms are easy to get
wrapped up in especially with cultural imperialism planting seeds of what beauty is. United States

Assignment 2 Social Norm Violations
In this paper I will be discussing two norm violations I witnessed, and one I committed. When I first
received this assignment I had to get familiar with the terminology and understand what different
types of norms there are. Norms are expectations of "right" behavior for a person to follow in
society. Society created social norms to provide a guideline for members of society to follow. If we
lived without these rules it allows people to not be accountable for their actions. Social norms are
ideas or ideas that are expected for society members to follow. Each culture, and subculture has their
own social norms to follow. According to James Henslin, (2015)(2015) "Values are the standards by

I am dishwasher at a local restaurant and I have to work with another dishwasher each shift. Two
weeks ago I showed up early for my night shift and proceeded to start washing dishes. Exactly at
five o'clock my coworker arrived and started drying dishes and everything was going fine. After
fifteen minutes I finally saw my something on my coworkers neck. He had bright pink lipstick on
the right side of his neck and it was in the shape of lips. I caught my self staring at him for a couple
of seconds then continued working. I found the fact he chose not to wipe the lipstick off his neck to
be really odd, but just ignored it. I did not feel as though it was my job to sanction him and tell him
to clean the lipstick of his neck. I knew that he would not have been receptive to me chastising him,
because he is older than myself. However, my shift–leader would give him a negative sanction. Our
shift– leader, who was also his sister told him to go clean up his neck. This was folkway norm
violation, because my coworker having lipstick on his cheek did not prevent me from continuing to
work. The reason he was sanctioned is because his sister found it to be unprofessional for him to
knowingly walk around with lipstick on his neck.He took being sanctioned by his sister as a joke,
and immediately did as he was told. In society its common for people to be reserved and to check
their appearance before entering the

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights
The concept that morals are not inherent or universal but are developed by the necessities of a given
society at any certain time, as presented in William Graham Sumner's Folkways, is inadequate and
displeasing. While some moral practices are relative to particular cultures, that does not mean that
there are no rights that belong to everyone, nor does it mean that just because an activity is practiced
that it is morally justifiable. Each human being is entitled to a certain set of liberties, which are
outlined in the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights." All individuals are supposed to have equal
access to these rights, but according to Sumner, all rights are cultural and none are universal.
In Folkways, Sumner conveys his belief that the proper way of doing things is based on the culture
of the surrounding society and the practices they are participating in at the time. "In the folkways,
whatever is, is right" (5). The idea here is that if a group of people are taking part in particular
actions and behaviors, those actions and behaviors must be morally permissible because they are
doing them. Whatever they do is morally correct; whatever they do not do is morally incorrect.
Because these practices have been passed down through generations, they must be right because
they are still practiced. This varies for each individual culture or society and it is not the place of any
one group to judge or criticize the moral practices of another group because everyone is following

Society Has Built A Foundation And Standards Essay
Society has built a foundation and standards in order to be proper in public. Within those societies
shows how each and every member should behave and also how not to behave. Norms are the
guidelines and standards for society. There are different norms in each societies and also different
within groups. Heslin (2015) wrote, "...values are the standards by which people define what is good
and bad, beautiful and ugly". The values that people hold are different in countries which have
different norms. For instance, we have to behave respectfully at someone's funeral versus the way
we act at birthday parties. From society there are norms that strictly followed and then there are
where it is less strict. The traditional norms or the way of life of certain community or group of
people are titled as folkways; those norms can be broken and have less risk of severe punishments.
The norms that are more enforced are mores, which has values and can be faced punishment when
it's violated. To be able to keep up with norms, society has positive and negative sanctions to
determine the behavior is appropriate or not.
Sanctions imposes values representation and significant to society. For instance, a male teenager
came into the mall wearing a female cheerleader costume. He will be laughed, get pointed at and
also frowns. While if an elderly man were to wear a female cheerleader costume and entered the
mall. He will be seen as a creep and make people feel extremely uncomfortable. They both

Values, Norms, And Norms
Throughout life, in any society we develop a sense to conform and adjust to our surroundings but
why? Our values in our society determines our norms and why we do the things we do. I recently
sought out to break these social conformities that violated the values, and norms we hold as a
society. Every society is different and, in every society there are different and similar values, norms,
sanctions folkways, and mores. Breaking them up and analyzing them we began to understand why
these terms and values are so important to us. To understand why we have a sense of conformity, we
must first understand value. "Values are used to learn people's culture, ideas, and what they want out
of life (Henslin 49). Every culture has similar and different values. "Norms are the expectations a
group develops concerning the 'right' way to reflects its values" (Henslin49). An example of a norm
would be personal space and speaking quietly in certain places such as a library. When norms are
violated people often begin to question the person's sanity and well–being based on how extreme the
norm violation was. Every other weekend I venture to most of the Goodwill's throughout town. I
decided that I would violate the norm of personal space. I would wonder through the aisle and
slowly make my way to the person I choose to conduct the experience. When I got close enough I
would act as though I was browsing through clothes, or I was really interested in the items I was
looking at to act as though I

Essay about An Experiment in Breaking The Norms: A...
A norm is defined as expectations, or rules of behavior that reflect and enforce behavior.(Henslin,
2009) When people are in public settings we expect individuals to behave in a certain way. For
example when standing in line to see a show or to purchase an item we expect everyone to stand in a
single file line. We expect individuals to wait their turn as they proceed to the front of the line.
Another expectation or norm is we expect individuals to have dinning etiquette when eating in
restaurants. We expect people to dine using the proper utensils. I thought about this example as I
was pondering for an observation to perform. I decided that I would take a chance and visit a well
respected restaurant in my area and break the norm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He handed me a menu and advised that a waiter would be with me soon.
As I sat alone at my small table for two, I looked at my watch and noted the time of 12:10pm. As I
glanced at the menu I slowly began scanning the dining area. As I suspected the lunch crowd was
pretty full and I counted 36 customers in the dining area. My waiter arrived at my table and
introduced himself. His name was Tony, although I am sure his full name was Anthony. He was
average height, slim build, olive complexion, and dark hair. He was very polite and asked if I would
like a drink before ordering and after my response he turned and retrieved my beverage. When he
returned he asked if I need a few minutes to look over the menu and I responded that I did. Before
leaving, he proceeded to tell me the lunch specials for the day and even made a recommendation. I
thanked him as he turned and walked away.
When Tony left the table I again began to scan the restaurant. I noted that there were couples and
groups of people in the restaurant. Many were Caucasian , African American and a few of Latin
American descent . There were business men women in suits and ties. There were also several
elderly couples sipping wine with their meals. The age range of all the patrons were from toddlers to
elderly approximately 70 years of age.
As I scanned the room, I saw Tony systematically going table to table taking orders

will give a brief background from his birth, to his education, and end with his profession or career.
His many contributions to further the field of sociology will be discussed; such as his theories,
teachings, and books. The paper will also mention his major influence as well as those he
influenced. His interests and pastimes will also be included. Introduction William Graham Sumner
was an American historian, economists, political theorist, sociologist, and anthropologist, from New
Jersey. Sumner came from a poor and uneducated family but went on to graduate from Yale
University and study at Oxford and Gottingen. He was a distinguished writer of numerous books
including his most popular Folkways. He made major contributions to sociology that includes the
concept of ethnocentrism, the term folkways, and the term mores. Sumner was influenced by his
parents but his major influence in the field of sociology was the English sociologist Herbert Spencer.
Also, he influenced many people through his books, essays, and speeches. There are many
surprising and interesting facts about William Sumner such as his time as an ordained minister and
traveling to Europe to further his studies.

Folkway Norms In Our Culture
Norms are constantly changing and different in every culture. Norms are usually unnoticed in our
society. There are folkways and mores norms. Folkway norms specify proper behaviors and are less
violent and just rude which are stated was "weak". Mores norms are "stronger" norms which
violates more demands. We're taught wrongs and rights while we're kids like sneezing into your
elbow and using manners. Other things are just common sense like facing forwards the doors in an
elevator. In our culture standing backwards in the elevator is not normal. People walk in and turn
around to face the door. For this assignment, I decided to break that norm. I was leaving a doctor's
appointment and had to take an elevator down to the first floor. I was about to turn around like a
normal human but I remembered this essay and thought it was the perfect opportunity with an
elevator full of people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

American Culture Sociology
American culture has been referred to as a "melting pot." Different cultures have added their own
distinct aspects to society, making America a diverse country. Despite the plethora of cultures,
certain norms, mores, and folkways are evident in American society. These ideas are vital to the
function and stability of America. They provide guidelines for what is acceptable and not. In
virtually every society, there are people who engage in deviant behavior and do not abide by the
values that the rest of society follows. Theorists have debated if people are socialized into acting this
way and if it is a social or personal problem. The sociological study of culture focuses on norms,
mores, and folkways.
Norms, folkways, and mores from American society
What differentiates American society from other societies is the rules and values that they follow. In
sociology, these are called norms. Norms govern our lives by showing us how to behave in a certain
ways. Codified norms turn into laws. One such norm is to shake hands when meeting someone.
Another norm is when using public transportation, to give up his or her seat to someone who is
elderly, disabled or pregnant. William Graham Sumner was one of the first American sociologists to
distinguish between norms and folkways. Folkways stem from norms that most often are done
unconsciously, and emerge from repetition. They are vital to society, are flexible, and do not
provoke strong public responses if broken (Sumner, 1906, p. 1).

Social Norm Analysis
The society we live in is full of rules. These rules are sometimes laws that the government enforces
on us, but there are other rules as well, the unspoken ones. Even though these rules are unspoken,
the majority of individuals follow them without question. Every culture, group, and person has
values. These values are what individuals use to define what is "desirable or undesirable, good or
bad, beautiful or ugly" (Henslin, 2015, p. 49). The "rules" people use to reflect these values are
called norms. Norms are the "expectations that develop out of a groups values" (Henslin, 2015, p.
49). When individuals either follow the expected norms or decide to step outside of the so called
"box," bystanders begin to form sanctions. Sanctions can be negative ... Show more content on

A few of my friends and I decided to get together for lunch one afternoon, something we typically
do when we're all in town. After arriving at the quaint cafe in the market place, my friend decided to
order a flatbread pizza. When we all received our food, the friend that had ordered a pizza proceeded
to retrieve her knife and fork from her napkin to begin eating. I thought this was odd of course;
typically when someone orders a pizza they eat it with their hands. In order to continue my
observations of the social norm my friend had just violated, I continued to watch the reactions of my
friends and the people around us. My friends began sharing glances and giggles as a couple at the
table next to us began whispering (well really talking only somewhat quietly). The couple said, loud
enough for me to hear, "Does she think she's fancy because she's using a knife and fork to eat
pizza?" Followed by a few laughs. I maintained to keep my mouth shut and continue my
observations. One of my other friends finally blurted out, which humor in her voice, "Why on earth
are you eating your pizza like that?" My friend had a puzzling look on her face until she looked
down at her knife and fork. She then proceeded to tell us that she always ate pizza with a knife and
fork because she hated having greasy hands. Her explanation made perfect sense, but what she did
was still considered strange. My friend really only violated a folkway. Eating pizza with your hands
isn't a core value our society regards as important, but it is an expectation we

William Graham Sumner's Folkways : The True Nature Of...
A moral standard is a code of conduct that distinguishes actions that are morally correct from those
that are not. In his essay, "Folkways", anthropologist and philosopher William Graham Sumner aims
to describe what he believes to be the true nature of moral standards and morality. To achieve this,
Sumner uses his theory on the origin of morality, which requires the concept of Cultural Relativism
to be sound. Cultural Relativism, also known as Moral Relativism, teaches that there can be no
objective or fundamental moral truths because morality is relative to all societies. Moral Realism, a
theory in direct opposition to Moral Relativism, teaches that there are certain objective truths that
are shared worldwide. In this paper, I will first outline Sumner's view on the origin of morality, and
discuss how he uses this theory in his argument. I will then briefly describe the Moral Realist
concerns about relativist theory, and explain why these concerns are relevant. Lastly, by reviewing
an objection proposed by a proponent of Moral realism, I will distinguish whether or not Sumner's
view is correct.
Sumner proposes that moral standards, and morality, are inevitable products of natural
circumstances. He communicates this through his theory, which transpires as follows. First, there
exists a society that has needs. There is significance in this claim because the term 'need' denotes
that if it is left unsatisfied, the society cannot survive. Second, in order to survive, the

Norms Of The Culture And Group Within Society
Society is made up of countless different groups and cultures, each in which differs from one
another. Every culture and group within society has a set of norms, or expected behaviors, that have
been set in place and are to be followed. When determining the norms within other cultures, one
must first examine the values of the culture. Values are "the standards by which people define what
is desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or ugly" (Henslin, 2011, p. 49). Being able to
understand the values held by each individual culture is the key to learning more about why cultures
hold the norms that they do. Each culture in society has sanctions for these norms. Sanctions are
"either expressions of approval given to people for upholding norms or expressions of disapproval"
(Henslin, 2011, p. 49). Upholding norms is very important and when norms are violating, an
individual is going against what their personal culture sees as being right behavior. Depending on
where an individual lives, going against the social norms can result in extreme punishment such as
imprisonment. Though following and upholding norms is expected and very important, some norms
are not enforced. These norms are known as folkways. By saying these norms are not enforced, it
simply means that if an individual was to go against a folkway, they will not be punished or shunned
as they would be when violating norms known as "mores". Mores are "norms that are strictly
enforced because they are thought

For my breaching project, I will be breaking the social norm of wearing shoes. I believe it is a social

Deviance Essay
Deviance is the violation of social norms. Social norms and values determine what level of deviance
is acceptable. My folkway violation was on the cultural norms in black churches about not wearing
pants and not being late for services. I developed my foundation of religion in the A.M.E. (African

norms only. When I was younger, Sunday mornings was filled with dressing in your best attire. For

Essay On Social Norms
Social Norms One of the main ways in which society functions is based on social norms, which help
regulate the actions that people will carry out on a daily basis. Social norms can be learned as part of
someone 's culture or can be influenced by authority such as a government. Examples of the
different types of norms could be walking on the sidewalk, sitting during a class and going through a
green light. Norms will change over time as society grows and times change, but social norms will
sometimes be conflicting with one another when the environment or people change. As stated by
Eric Jorrey 's PowerPoint slides, norms are "a society 's established standards of
behavior–"appropriate" ways to behave–widely shared and understood" (P. 8). ... Show more content

However, for this project, I violated that expectation in order to gain a reaction from others and test
how social norms can be violated in our society. Social norms are the basis for human behavior and
explain the difference between those who conform to the norm or those who violate it and become
deviant, therefore showing how these affect society. Before engaging in deviant activity, there were
things to consider about the reactions I would receive from the subjects. My hypothesis about the
reaction that I would get from my different behavior was that the people I interacted with would not
respond, thinking that I was a person of least importance and just simply chose to bother them on
that day. I also hypothesized that by engaging with people who were not too familiar with me I
would progress any negative judgements that they had in their mind prior to our interaction. Another
reaction I made a hypothesis about was that the subjects would try and give a response more or
equally as confusing as my own. I gained knowledge about situations like these from being a
bystander in the group that I worked with. This is because of my unfamiliarity with how they
interact and how they communicate with friends as opposed to strangers, in which I noticed a
significant difference. However, I also noticed some present the same

As society we have never given much thought as to how we function to how society . This statement
is not only true on a macro level, such as how our government functions along with other aspects of
society but also as individuals. Furthermore, we as individuals rarely stop to think about the reasons
we have to react the way we do in certain situations. It can be almost guaranteed that we react in
these ways because of norms. Norms can be defined as "expectations of right behavior"(Henslin

for violating a norm"(Henslin 2015). This can occur from those individuals who expect a grown
adult to act as such. This occurred with those who disapproved the teacher and stared at her in a
disapproving. Furthermore, those who just laughed might have done it being mean or because they
just take life lightly. As for the one person who just asked about her attire he might have done it so
he would not make the mistake of not judging her prematurely, which is something society should
do as a whole. However, nothing struck me more deeply than my own norm

Folkways Essay Examples
Folkways are customs that govern our average day to day behaviour that is accepted by our society.
It shows the shared attitudes of a culture and we follow them without realizing we are, which makes
them unconscious. They differ from society to society, because we have different values. Lastly,
they are situational. A folkway in our society is to not do certain things in an elevator especially
when there's others in it with you. I go to Georgia almost monthly, and I'm always in hotels there.
Almost every trip I come in contact with someone in an elevator who is talking loudly on the phone.
It has always been my huge pet peeve. My mother and father were talking about our next trip to
Georgia as I tried to think of a folkway. I then decided I would talk loudly on ... Show more content

my eye, I saw all the women eyeing me, begging me silently to stop. The elevator ride was about to
end, I decided to speak a bit louder. I saw Haley's eyes widen as I turned my head, the mother's baby
next to me had woken up. I silently freaked out, but luckily it didn't seem shaken up by talking,
rather the baby had woken up by their own choice. The fourth floor button dinged shortly after the

Folkways Or Social Norms Dictate Our Society?
In day to day life, we stand in lines, we drive on the right side of the road, and just the expectations
of people around us. We do this because standing out or getting punished in society isn't something
most people want to do. Norms dictate our lives, but what exactly are they? Folkways, or informal
rules, are not a big deal to violate, but you are expected to follow. When a folkway is broken, like
cutting in line, it is not a big deal. Besides a few angry people at you, you will not go to jail, or be
punished. Mores, are formal, and when violated can be punished. When a more is broken, like
driving in the wrong lane, you are probably going to receive a citation or go to jail. While I preferred
not to receive a citation or go to jail, I decided to break a folkway. As a Sergeant of Narcotics
Investigation for my sheriff's office, I am happy to wear a t–shirt, with BUD tactical pants, and an
outer vest that I only throw on in case of an emergency or when I am in the field. I decided to wear

The Violation Of Norm Violations Essay
Norm Violations Norm violations are a form of actions that do not seem right to some people. Let's
say that you are in a public place, you are expected to act respectful and normal. Norms describes
the expectation of a behavior. (James M. Henslin) One can perform a norm violation by doing the
opposite of that, like invading personal space. There can be different reactions to violated norms
which sociologists call sanctions. (Henslin) Mores, folkways, and values revolve around norms as
well.
For example, when it comes to the LGBT community, which is also
known as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, I believe that everyone deserves to
be happy

Norms Of A Norm Violation
In every aspect of society there are social norms. We live in a world that some norms are considered
normal and some are considered not so normal. These social norms are important so that people can
act a certain way in society. Doing a norm violation project for this class has been a fun project.
Norms are expectations of a behavior that are considered to be the right way to act. What is
considered right behavior? Some things I do in my life can be considered a norm or a norm
violation. Norm violations are stepping away from what our society considers to be a norm. There
are a few different types of norms. Norms that are not enforced are called folkways. Folkways can
be considered people who are half naked in a gay parade. Norms that are strictly enforced because
they are a core value of a group are mores. Mores are when a woman would be exposing her breast
in the gay parade.
On February 17, 2016 I decided to commit my norm violation. I went into the Goodwill store on
Olive Drive near my home; it was in the late afternoon after five pm. I decided to do my violation
on breast feeding in public with older children because it is such a controversial issue in our society.
The children were my own kids and have been breast feed before, so they knew what was to be
expected. My oldest child is an eleven year old male, my middle child is a nine year old male and
my youngest child is a six year old female. I wore loose fitting clothes so this could be possible. We

Conducting A Norm Experiment
In today's society, norms are expected by everyone. According to the book Essentials of Sociology a
Down– To– Earth Approach, Hansen states that norms are expectations of "right" behavior (Hansen,
2014). There are also two forms of norms that may be strictly enforced or not. There is folkways and
mores. Folkways are norms that aren't strictly enforced while mores are strictly enforced for
essential thought to care values or the well–being of a group (Hansen, 2014). Along with a norm and
the two types, there may also be reactions to it. These reactions may be positive or negative and
termed as sanctions. Sanctions are either expressions of an approval given to people for upholding
norms or expression of disapproval for violating them (Hansen, 2014). In conducting a norm
experiment, the terms were put to a test. The experiment consisted of an observed norm violation
and an individual norm violation. The experiments resulted in what I had hypothesized. My
hypothesis consisted of sanctions of the norms that were conducted.
In the observe norm violation experiment, it was concluded to result in negative sanction. The
experiment consisted of a friend of mine and I ordering our lunch at In n Out. It was my friend,
Denise's turn to order her meal. Denise ordered a double– double with no cheese, no thousand island
spread, a single patty and only onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. The employee looked at her in a

soft whispers loud enough to hear saying "Why is he doing that?" or "is he serious?". Although there

occasions. For example, some students joined me in my quest to walk backwards starting a

my new cardio workout I stopped the violation once I finished my classes. Heading back to the

Prescriptive Norms Research Paper
Question No 1 Answer: prescriptive and proscriptive norms:
Prescriptive norms are silently understood precepts of expected behavior, closely related to manners
and good conduct, while proscriptive norms are taboo or otherwise unacceptable actions and
behaviors that likewise remain undiscussed. Both sets of norms differ between cultures.
Both prescriptive and proscriptive norms are defined by the expectation that individuals will intuit
their existence while growing to adulthood and entering society. They are seldom discussed openly
or in conversation, existing instead as a kind of road map for general behavior.
Examples of prescriptive norms include:
Writing thank–you cards after receiving a gift
Accepting a proffered handshake

One group may consider a norm prescriptive while another group might regard it as proscriptive. In
the United States, kissing the cheek of our friend is regarded as prescriptive folkway but it is
proscriptive mores among Muslims especially when it is done in opposite sexes because this is
considered strange. Chinese locals in Guangzi province consider eating live fish a prescriptive
folkway but the Chinese in some part of Hongkong call it an unusual eating behavior. Moreover,
norms like eating bugs in Thailand, Nepal and Malaysia is a prescriptive folkway but it is
proscriptive folkway in some neighboring countries like Singapore and Taiwan. This is a proof that
norms vary. Also, norms in one group may be considered prescriptive during one time and it may
later be considered as proscriptive or vice versa from proscriptive to prescriptive. For example, the
Protestants 20 years ago frown at going to theatres or pubs but now it is an accepted folkway. The
Pakistanis and Indians prescribe the wearing of turban in their ancient culture but now we can see it
to be proscriptive in some cultural groups especially those who are in the United States. Again, this
also a proof that norms constantly

Deviance Reflection Paper
For this assignment, we were given a task to observe, analyze and study our peers on or around the
campus of Albion College. The reasoning behind this project is to get a better understanding of how
the society of Albion functions and also to grow our skills of examining others throughout their day

of human interaction, the cafeteria. I picked Baldwin because I thought it was a great place to watch
my peers interact with other students, staff members, and even professors. While I was in Baldwin, I
came to realize there were three main concepts I noticed, that individuals sit with others from their

Another norm when in Baldwin is greeting the staff members before telling them the type of meal
you want. Also when ordering food, students and adults used manners such as please and thank you.
For example, I overheard a student order their meal by saying "Hi, can I have the salmon with white
rice and veggies please?" And after the female was served she thanked the cafe worker.
Another norm I observed while in Baldwin was that after individuals were done with their main
meals, they returned their dirty dishes to the dish return, and on their way back to their tables, they
would stop and grab a sweet from the dessert area. I would define this as a folkway norm because
most people of society eat dinner first and dessert after. Another folkway norm I discovered that
exists in Baldwin hall is that almost everyone who is enjoying their food at the caf is multitasking at
least two things. Whether it is eating and talking to friends, eating and doing homework, eating and
using the phone, even eating, talking to friends and playing on the phone all at once. One important
thing I learned during this assignment is how much students and even professors are attached to

The Cultural Expectations And Rules
Norms
A norm is something that is standard in society. Within sociology, it is specifically the cultural
expectations and rules that a person within the culture is supposed to uphold. Norms tell an
individual how they should behave within a certain situation. According to Saul McLeod of Simply
Psychology (2008), people are expected to behave in a way that is not random. Norms are social
standards that are agreed upon by a society so that members of a culture do not deviate into areas
that others would consider abnormal and wrong. Also norms vary by culture, so one culture that has
an agreed upon and socially practiced norm may vary from another culture that does not do the same
thing and instead has different norms. Each culture's norms differ based on beliefs and customs.
Norms are a general category of social rules. Taboos, laws, mores, and folkways are all norms. A
taboo is something that a culture forbids. Laws are strictly enforced formal rules by the government
or social powers within a culture. A more is a norm related to morals; what is deemed right or not
within a particular society. Also folkways are customs that are socially accepted, but are not strictly
enforced. Following norms are important because an individual is only socially accepted if they
follow the set norms.
The norm that I violated is a norm within American culture. It is a violation of a norm to clip your

values and expectations by which a society guides the behavior of its members. There are two types

Examples of a mores include maintaining eye contact when speaking to someone, knowing personal

Examples Of Norm Violations

violation. Folkways, for example, are "norms that are not strictly enforced" (Henslin 51). Mores are
"norms that are strictly enforced because they are thought essential to core values or the wellbeing

The Consequences Of Social Norms In The American Society
In a public setting and in society in general, there are certain rules that are followed unconsciously
by people. People are unaware most times that they control and manipulate their behavior to fit into
a certain societal setting. While it is perfectly normal to sing along and dance to music in the privacy
of the home, it is frowned upon to do such behavior in public. These rules that people tend to follow
unconsciously and consciously are referred to as social norms. Social norms vary from culture to
culture. In some cultures, like Japan, slurping food is a sign of enjoyment and is welcomed in a
public and private setting. However, in America and other societies, slurping food or eating with
your mouth open is completely unacceptable. Norms can be broken down into four categories:
folkways, mores, taboos, and laws. The social norm that my partner and I chose to breach was a
folkway norm. Folkway norms are behaviors that society deems as acceptable and unacceptable
behavior such as manners and etiquette. Breaking a folkway brings no serious consequences like
breaking a law. In our experiment, we decided to violate dining etiquette. Ashely and I realized that
it is perfectly acceptable to consume food on the ground if it is at a park or the privacy of the home
and even when most people are participating in the same behavior. It is, however, strange and
unusual to see people dining as if in a picnic in a public setting where furniture, such as tables and
chairs are offered.

Grieving Styles In Ordinary People
Society and culture have created scripts (i.e., social norms) that dictate the ways in which we are to
grieve. These scripts also prescribe the unique ways in which men and women are expected to
respond to grief. Specifically, men's grief scripts suggest that men will resolve to grieve in solitude
as a demonstration of their self–reliance. Men may also have muted emotional response and
expressed emotions are typically in the form of anger or guilt (Martin & Doka, 2011).
Comparatively, women's grief scripts suggest that women are more emotive and seek support from
others to help cope with loss (Martin & Doka, 2011).
However, the characters in Ordinary People do not conform to the stereotypical gender grief scripts
and instead reflect the different grieving styles captured in Martin and Doka's (2011) grieving styles
continuum. Martin and Doka (2011) conceptualizes grieving styles ranging on a continuum from
intuitive to instrumental. Grieving styles reflect individuals' ability to adapt to loss and are
distinguished by their use of cognitive and affective domains to process grief.
Based on Conrad's character in the movie, he could be described as having more of an intuitive
grieving style. This style of grieving utilizes more of the affective domain and uses little of the
cognitive (Martin & Doka, 2011). For the intuitive griever, grief is characterized by the experience
of painful feelings. The feelings of guilt and sadness were those that Conrad experienced the most.

Society's Guidelines And Standards
Each society establishes its standards in order to work properly. Those expectations define on how
its members should and not behave, and how to relate to one another. Society's guidelines and
standards are referred as norms. Norms vary among different societies and even groups within
societies may vary. Heslin indicates, "...values are the standards by which people define what is
good and bad, beautiful and ugly"(2015, pg.49). Accordingly to their values, different settings and
countries call for different norms. In the manner in which we are to behave in a theatre contrasts our
behavior at a party versus the way we are expected to act a church. Based on the society's priorities,
some norms are unwaveringly enforced whereas lenient with ... Show more content on

even be mores for other cultures. In America, it is common for political leaders and other authority
figures to point as they speak. At times, pointing at strangers and whispering may indicate a
folkway. However in other countries, it is considered extremely rude regardless of the occasion; as
in China, you are to point with an open hand. The cultural difference influenced and altered the
norm, ultimately affected the result of the sanction. Sanctions can reveal favorable behaviors as
well. Positive incentives, from smiles to monetary rewards, can encourage certain behaviors. For
example, scholarships and some form of financial aid are incentives to encourage high school
students to strive for higher education.
Society arranges these standard norms to reflect their core values. As a whole, members intend to
not violate them on a constant basis. I observed violation happen more often than what I anticipated
and I realized how assimilated I am to the norms. For example, my first observation was at my non–
denominational church. From

Body Modification and Social Norms

  • 1. Norm Violations Are A Form Of Actions Norm violations are a form of actions that do not seem right to some people. Let's say that you are in a public place, you are expected to act respectful and normal. Norms describes the expectation of a behavior. (James M. Henslin) One can perform a norm violation by doing the opposite of that, like invading personal space. There can be different reactions to violated norms which sociologists call sanctions. (Henslin) Mores, folkways, and values revolve around norms as well. Mores and folkways are two different types of norms. Folkway being one norm that is not really being enforced (Henslin). It can be not smiling when a stranger gives you a smile or, not waving back when someone waves at you. Mores is the opposite of that, it involves something for the most part everyone hates i.e. killing, robbing, raping (Henslin). Specifically it can be a pedophile. One can say that many parents across the United States dislike pedophiles. Parents do not want their kids experiencing getting touched by someone older than them in inappropriately or even worse rape them. Now that would be a negative sanction. Values can be a person's ideal way on how to behave in certain places or their principles, just like ethics, beliefs, or standards (Henslin). Values can vary in cultures or religions as well. For example, when it comes to the LGBT community, which is also known as the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, I believe that everyone deserves to be happy with whomever they ... • 3. Folkway Violation In Line Excuse me, but can I go next in line, I am in such a hurry. At a young age, it was taught to be impolite to cut a line and to wait patiently behind the person in front of you. In many cases in lines at the grocery store, ATM, airports or the drug store, it is the social norm to wait until it is your turn. "Americans spend roughly 37 billion hours each year waiting in line. The dominant cost of waiting is an emotional one: stress, boredom, that nagging sensation that one's life is slipping away" (Stone. Alex, 2012). In this essay, I will explore my folkway violation of a minor social norm of cutting in line. In most cases people ask on a regular basis if they can cut ahead in line after asking to do so and most individuals give the go ahead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I once again picked up one item and walked to the line, hoping that I did not run into anyone from the prior store. I once again stood in line for a few minutes, looking at my watch and mumbling to myself, gosh, I am not going to make this appointment. The person in front of me, looked at me, turned back around not saying anything, so I went around her and tap the customer shoulder of the person ahead of her, and in my sweetest voice asked if I can jump ahead of her to check out, due to me having an appointment that I really needed to make. Once again, the customer said sure, and the customer behind her gave me a look that was of complete annoyance. If looks could kill, I would have been laying on the floor. The reaction to my violation of cutting lines in these stores and not sticking to society's norm of waiting patiently for my turn was really uncomfortable, embarrassing, and mortifying. The fear that someone would chastise and make a scene, to draw attention to what I was doing was nerve wrecking. "Perhaps the biggest influence on our feelings about lines, though, has to do with our perception of fairness. When it comes to lines, the universally acknowledged standard is first come, first served: any deviation is, to most, a mark of iniquity, and can lead to violent queue rage" (Stone, Alex.2012). This deviant behavior of not conforming to the social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Laws Of Social Control In our lifetime we are brought upon the normality in our lives. And once we someone doing or dressed in an abnormality way in public we are usually drawn to them. We tend to think of why they are dressed like that or why they are doing that particular thing. Folkways are the traditional behavior or way of life a particular community or group of people. Just like in life we get used to things being the same or normal each day these are norms. A norm is something usual, typical, or standard. Our society is used to things being like a folkway or a norm day to day lifestyle. This lifestyle is considered a mores. Mores are the essential or characteristics customs and conventions of a community. To someone that does something out of the norm there must be a reason or a meaning to them thats important to them. This is their value, a value is the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. Sanctions are the mechanisms of social control. Sanctions are the opposed to form of internal control, like cultural norms and values, sociologists consider sanctions a form of external control. The norm that I violated originally was , I pretended to have a strange addiction to deodorant. What i had done was, I got a brand new bottle of deodorant and took it all out. And cleaned and washed the bottle until there was none left. I then got foil and lined the bottom of the bottle so I would be able to put melted white chocolate chips in the bottle ... • 7. Body Modification, Folkways And Mores Body Modification, Folkways and Mores Our book defines sociology as, "the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior, from mass culture to small groups and individual interactions (Ferris)." So, quite literally sociologists study individual, group and cultural behaviors and actions as a way to assess society as a whole. Body modification is any alteration to a person 's body from its natural state. Practices of body modification include but are not limited to piercings, tattoos, scarification and implants. Individuals engage in body modification for health benefits, cultural expectations and the ever changing standard of beauty. Sociologist are interested in studying body modification because by researching the types of body modifications individuals, groups and cultures engage in, in specific areas they will can better understand society. With social imagination sociologist can connect body modification to social folkways and mores in a given society. Social imagination allows connections to be made between what people believe is an individual choice, want or desire to social standards and norms. Sociologist may also find body modification interesting because they can study how societies such as the United States can influence the different cultures within the society. United States societal norms are easy to get wrapped up in especially with cultural imperialism planting seeds of what beauty is. United States though created of many cultures and ... • 9. Assignment 2 Social Norm Violations In this paper I will be discussing two norm violations I witnessed, and one I committed. When I first received this assignment I had to get familiar with the terminology and understand what different types of norms there are. Norms are expectations of "right" behavior for a person to follow in society. Society created social norms to provide a guideline for members of society to follow. If we lived without these rules it allows people to not be accountable for their actions. Social norms are ideas or ideas that are expected for society members to follow. Each culture, and subculture has their own social norms to follow. According to James Henslin, (2015)(2015) "Values are the standards by which people define what is good and bad, beautiful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am dishwasher at a local restaurant and I have to work with another dishwasher each shift. Two weeks ago I showed up early for my night shift and proceeded to start washing dishes. Exactly at five o'clock my coworker arrived and started drying dishes and everything was going fine. After fifteen minutes I finally saw my something on my coworkers neck. He had bright pink lipstick on the right side of his neck and it was in the shape of lips. I caught my self staring at him for a couple of seconds then continued working. I found the fact he chose not to wipe the lipstick off his neck to be really odd, but just ignored it. I did not feel as though it was my job to sanction him and tell him to clean the lipstick of his neck. I knew that he would not have been receptive to me chastising him, because he is older than myself. However, my shift–leader would give him a negative sanction. Our shift– leader, who was also his sister told him to go clean up his neck. This was folkway norm violation, because my coworker having lipstick on his cheek did not prevent me from continuing to work. The reason he was sanctioned is because his sister found it to be unprofessional for him to knowingly walk around with lipstick on his neck.He took being sanctioned by his sister as a joke, and immediately did as he was told. • 11. The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights The concept that morals are not inherent or universal but are developed by the necessities of a given society at any certain time, as presented in William Graham Sumner's Folkways, is inadequate and displeasing. While some moral practices are relative to particular cultures, that does not mean that there are no rights that belong to everyone, nor does it mean that just because an activity is practiced that it is morally justifiable. Each human being is entitled to a certain set of liberties, which are outlined in the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights." All individuals are supposed to have equal access to these rights, but according to Sumner, all rights are cultural and none are universal. In Folkways, Sumner conveys his belief that the proper way of doing things is based on the culture of the surrounding society and the practices they are participating in at the time. "In the folkways, whatever is, is right" (5). The idea here is that if a group of people are taking part in particular actions and behaviors, those actions and behaviors must be morally permissible because they are doing them. Whatever they do is morally correct; whatever they do not do is morally incorrect. Because these practices have been passed down through generations, they must be right because they are still practiced. This varies for each individual culture or society and it is not the place of any one group to judge or criticize the moral practices of another group because everyone is following ... • 13. Society Has Built A Foundation And Standards Essay Society has built a foundation and standards in order to be proper in public. Within those societies shows how each and every member should behave and also how not to behave. Norms are the guidelines and standards for society. There are different norms in each societies and also different within groups. Heslin (2015) wrote, "...values are the standards by which people define what is good and bad, beautiful and ugly". The values that people hold are different in countries which have different norms. For instance, we have to behave respectfully at someone's funeral versus the way we act at birthday parties. From society there are norms that strictly followed and then there are where it is less strict. The traditional norms or the way of life of certain community or group of people are titled as folkways; those norms can be broken and have less risk of severe punishments. The norms that are more enforced are mores, which has values and can be faced punishment when it's violated. To be able to keep up with norms, society has positive and negative sanctions to determine the behavior is appropriate or not. Sanctions imposes values representation and significant to society. For instance, a male teenager came into the mall wearing a female cheerleader costume. He will be laughed, get pointed at and also frowns. While if an elderly man were to wear a female cheerleader costume and entered the mall. He will be seen as a creep and make people feel extremely uncomfortable. They both ... • 15. Values, Norms, And Norms Throughout life, in any society we develop a sense to conform and adjust to our surroundings but why? Our values in our society determines our norms and why we do the things we do. I recently sought out to break these social conformities that violated the values, and norms we hold as a society. Every society is different and, in every society there are different and similar values, norms, sanctions folkways, and mores. Breaking them up and analyzing them we began to understand why these terms and values are so important to us. To understand why we have a sense of conformity, we must first understand value. "Values are used to learn people's culture, ideas, and what they want out of life (Henslin 49). Every culture has similar and different values. "Norms are the expectations a group develops concerning the 'right' way to reflects its values" (Henslin49). An example of a norm would be personal space and speaking quietly in certain places such as a library. When norms are violated people often begin to question the person's sanity and well–being based on how extreme the norm violation was. Every other weekend I venture to most of the Goodwill's throughout town. I decided that I would violate the norm of personal space. I would wonder through the aisle and slowly make my way to the person I choose to conduct the experience. When I got close enough I would act as though I was browsing through clothes, or I was really interested in the items I was looking at to act as though I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Essay about An Experiment in Breaking The Norms: A... A norm is defined as expectations, or rules of behavior that reflect and enforce behavior.(Henslin, 2009) When people are in public settings we expect individuals to behave in a certain way. For example when standing in line to see a show or to purchase an item we expect everyone to stand in a single file line. We expect individuals to wait their turn as they proceed to the front of the line. Another expectation or norm is we expect individuals to have dinning etiquette when eating in restaurants. We expect people to dine using the proper utensils. I thought about this example as I was pondering for an observation to perform. I decided that I would take a chance and visit a well respected restaurant in my area and break the norm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As I glanced at the menu I slowly began scanning the dining area. As I suspected the lunch crowd was pretty full and I counted 36 customers in the dining area. My waiter arrived at my table and introduced himself. His name was Tony, although I am sure his full name was Anthony. He was average height, slim build, olive complexion, and dark hair. He was very polite and asked if I would like a drink before ordering and after my response he turned and retrieved my beverage. When he returned he asked if I need a few minutes to look over the menu and I responded that I did. Before leaving, he proceeded to tell me the lunch specials for the day and even made a recommendation. I thanked him as he turned and walked away. When Tony left the table I again began to scan the restaurant. I noted that there were couples and groups of people in the restaurant. Many were Caucasian , African American and a few of Latin American descent . There were business men women in suits and ties. There were also several elderly couples sipping wine with their meals. The age range of all the patrons were from toddlers to elderly approximately 70 years of age. As I scanned the room, I saw Tony systematically going table to table taking orders ... • 21. Folkway Norms In Our Culture Norms are constantly changing and different in every culture. Norms are usually unnoticed in our society. There are folkways and mores norms. Folkway norms specify proper behaviors and are less violent and just rude which are stated was "weak". Mores norms are "stronger" norms which violates more demands. We're taught wrongs and rights while we're kids like sneezing into your elbow and using manners. Other things are just common sense like facing forwards the doors in an elevator. In our culture standing backwards in the elevator is not normal. People walk in and turn around to face the door. For this assignment, I decided to break that norm. I was leaving a doctor's appointment and had to take an elevator down to the first floor. I was about to turn around like a normal human but I remembered this essay and thought it was the perfect opportunity with an elevator full of people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 23. American Culture Sociology American culture has been referred to as a "melting pot." Different cultures have added their own distinct aspects to society, making America a diverse country. Despite the plethora of cultures, certain norms, mores, and folkways are evident in American society. These ideas are vital to the function and stability of America. They provide guidelines for what is acceptable and not. In virtually every society, there are people who engage in deviant behavior and do not abide by the values that the rest of society follows. Theorists have debated if people are socialized into acting this way and if it is a social or personal problem. The sociological study of culture focuses on norms, mores, and folkways. Norms, folkways, and mores from American society What differentiates American society from other societies is the rules and values that they follow. In sociology, these are called norms. Norms govern our lives by showing us how to behave in a certain ways. Codified norms turn into laws. One such norm is to shake hands when meeting someone. Another norm is when using public transportation, to give up his or her seat to someone who is elderly, disabled or pregnant. William Graham Sumner was one of the first American sociologists to distinguish between norms and folkways. Folkways stem from norms that most often are done unconsciously, and emerge from repetition. They are vital to society, are flexible, and do not provoke strong public responses if broken (Sumner, 1906, p. 1). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Social Norm Analysis The society we live in is full of rules. These rules are sometimes laws that the government enforces on us, but there are other rules as well, the unspoken ones. Even though these rules are unspoken, the majority of individuals follow them without question. Every culture, group, and person has values. These values are what individuals use to define what is "desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or ugly" (Henslin, 2015, p. 49). The "rules" people use to reflect these values are called norms. Norms are the "expectations that develop out of a groups values" (Henslin, 2015, p. 49). When individuals either follow the expected norms or decide to step outside of the so called "box," bystanders begin to form sanctions. Sanctions can be negative ... After arriving at the quaint cafe in the market place, my friend decided to order a flatbread pizza. When we all received our food, the friend that had ordered a pizza proceeded to retrieve her knife and fork from her napkin to begin eating. I thought this was odd of course; typically when someone orders a pizza they eat it with their hands. In order to continue my observations of the social norm my friend had just violated, I continued to watch the reactions of my friends and the people around us. My friends began sharing glances and giggles as a couple at the table next to us began whispering (well really talking only somewhat quietly). The couple said, loud enough for me to hear, "Does she think she's fancy because she's using a knife and fork to eat pizza?" Followed by a few laughs. I maintained to keep my mouth shut and continue my observations. One of my other friends finally blurted out, which humor in her voice, "Why on earth are you eating your pizza like that?" My friend had a puzzling look on her face until she looked down at her knife and fork. She then proceeded to tell us that she always ate pizza with a knife and fork because she hated having greasy hands. Her explanation made perfect sense, but what she did was still considered strange. My friend really only violated a folkway. Eating pizza with your hands isn't a core value our society regards as important, but it is an expectation we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. William Graham Sumner's Folkways : The True Nature Of... A moral standard is a code of conduct that distinguishes actions that are morally correct from those that are not. In his essay, "Folkways", anthropologist and philosopher William Graham Sumner aims to describe what he believes to be the true nature of moral standards and morality. To achieve this, Sumner uses his theory on the origin of morality, which requires the concept of Cultural Relativism to be sound. Cultural Relativism, also known as Moral Relativism, teaches that there can be no objective or fundamental moral truths because morality is relative to all societies. Moral Realism, a theory in direct opposition to Moral Relativism, teaches that there are certain objective truths that are shared worldwide. In this paper, I will first outline Sumner's view on the origin of morality, and discuss how he uses this theory in his argument. I will then briefly describe the Moral Realist concerns about relativist theory, and explain why these concerns are relevant. Lastly, by reviewing an objection proposed by a proponent of Moral realism, I will distinguish whether or not Sumner's view is correct. Sumner proposes that moral standards, and morality, are inevitable products of natural circumstances. He communicates this through his theory, which transpires as follows. First, there exists a society that has needs. There is significance in this claim because the term 'need' denotes that if it is left unsatisfied, the society cannot survive. Second, in order to survive, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Norms Of The Culture And Group Within Society Society is made up of countless different groups and cultures, each in which differs from one another. Every culture and group within society has a set of norms, or expected behaviors, that have been set in place and are to be followed. When determining the norms within other cultures, one must first examine the values of the culture. Values are "the standards by which people define what is desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or ugly" (Henslin, 2011, p. 49). Being able to understand the values held by each individual culture is the key to learning more about why cultures hold the norms that they do. Each culture in society has sanctions for these norms. Sanctions are "either expressions of approval given to people for upholding norms or expressions of disapproval" (Henslin, 2011, p. 49). Upholding norms is very important and when norms are violating, an individual is going against what their personal culture sees as being right behavior. Depending on where an individual lives, going against the social norms can result in extreme punishment such as imprisonment. Though following and upholding norms is expected and very important, some norms are not enforced. These norms are known as folkways. By saying these norms are not enforced, it simply means that if an individual was to go against a folkway, they will not be punished or shunned as they would be when violating norms known as "mores". From my observation, around Bluffton University, it is normal for students and professors to wear some sort of footwear while in the classroom or outside. I realize there is a group of students on campus who already do not wear shoes, so to differentiate myself I will be wearing only socks. • 37. Essay On Social Norms Social Norms One of the main ways in which society functions is based on social norms, which help regulate the actions that people will carry out on a daily basis. Social norms can be learned as part of someone 's culture or can be influenced by authority such as a government. Examples of the different types of norms could be walking on the sidewalk, sitting during a class and going through a green light. Norms will change over time as society grows and times change, but social norms will sometimes be conflicting with one another when the environment or people change. As stated by Eric Jorrey 's PowerPoint slides, norms are "a society 's established standards of behavior–"appropriate" ways to behave–widely shared and understood" (P. 8). ... Social norms are the basis for human behavior and explain the difference between those who conform to the norm or those who violate it and become deviant, therefore showing how these affect society. Before engaging in deviant activity, there were things to consider about the reactions I would receive from the subjects. My hypothesis about the reaction that I would get from my different behavior was that the people I interacted with would not respond, thinking that I was a person of least importance and just simply chose to bother them on that day. I also hypothesized that by engaging with people who were not too familiar with me I would progress any negative judgements that they had in their mind prior to our interaction. Another reaction I made a hypothesis about was that the subjects would try and give a response more or equally as confusing as my own. I gained knowledge about situations like these from being a bystander in the group that I worked with. This is because of my unfamiliarity with how they interact and how they communicate with friends as opposed to strangers, in which I noticed a significant difference. This statement is not only true on a macro level, such as how our government functions along with other aspects of society but also as individuals. Furthermore, we as individuals rarely stop to think about the reasons we have to react the way we do in certain situations. It can be almost guaranteed that we react in these ways because of norms. Norms can be defined as "expectations of right behavior"(Henslin 2015). Norms such as these can be shaped by society, government or culture. We may also think of this norm violation as a sanction or "someone's expression of approval for upholding a norm or expressions of disapproval for violating a norm"(Henslin 2015). This can occur from those individuals who expect a grown adult to act as such. This occurred with those who disapproved the teacher and stared at her in a disapproving. • 48. The Violation Of Norm Violations Essay Norm Violations Norm violations are a form of actions that do not seem right to some people. The first violation I spotted was a bit... out of the ordinary. One day, I decided to take a trip to the Marketplace on Ming with one of my buddies. All was seemingly normal until we stumbled upon a sight that shocked both of us. It was around 7:30 p.m. when we walked upon a pack of humans standing in a circle with their dogs. They were located where the suit stores and black tables are. As we first walked up, there seemed to be only a few dogs and a few humans. As we drew nearer, though, we found that there were at least 30 humans and 30 dogs. That was unbelievable. As we got within sight of the subjects, they all turned and looked at us at the same exact time. Both the human faction and the dogs simultaneously turned to us. These social norms are important so that people can act a certain way in society. Doing a norm violation project for this class has been a fun project. Norms are expectations of a behavior that are considered to be the right way to act. What is considered right behavior? Some things I do in my life can be considered a norm or a norm violation. • 54. Conducting A Norm Experiment In today's society, norms are expected by everyone. According to the book Essentials of Sociology a Down– To– Earth Approach, Hansen states that norms are expectations of "right" behavior (Hansen, 2014). There are also two forms of norms that may be strictly enforced or not. There is folkways and mores. Folkways are norms that aren't strictly enforced while mores are strictly enforced for essential thought to care values or the well–being of a group (Hansen, 2014). Along with a norm and the two types, there may also be reactions to it. These reactions may be positive or negative and termed as sanctions. Sanctions are either expressions of an approval given to people for upholding norms or expression of disapproval for violating them (Hansen, 2014). In conducting a norm experiment, the terms were put to a test. The experiment consisted of an observed norm violation and an individual norm violation. The experiments resulted in what I had hypothesized. My hypothesis consisted of sanctions of the norms that were conducted. In the observe norm violation experiment, it was concluded to result in negative sanction. The experiment consisted of a friend of mine and I ordering our lunch at In n Out. Both prescriptive and proscriptive norms are defined by the expectation that individuals will intuit their existence while growing to adulthood and entering society. Moreover, norms like eating bugs in Thailand, Nepal and Malaysia is a prescriptive folkway but it is proscriptive folkway in some neighboring countries like Singapore and Taiwan. This is a proof that norms vary. Also, norms in one group may be considered prescriptive during one time and it may later be considered as proscriptive or vice versa from proscriptive to prescriptive. The Pakistanis and Indians prescribe the wearing of turban in their ancient culture but now we can see it to be proscriptive in some cultural groups especially those who are in the United States. Again, this also a proof that norms constantly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Deviance Reflection Paper For this assignment, we were given a task to observe, analyze and study our peers on or around the campus of Albion College. The reasoning behind this project is to get a better understanding of how the society of Albion functions and also to grow our skills of examining others throughout their day to day lives. For this specific assignment, I choose a location that I knew would have a constant flow of human interaction, the cafeteria. I picked Baldwin because I thought it was a great place to watch my peers interact with other students, staff members, and even professors. While I was in Baldwin, I came to realize there were three main concepts I noticed, that individuals sit with others from their ingroups, that Albion College has its own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another norm when in Baldwin is greeting the staff members before telling them the type of meal you want. Also when ordering food, students and adults used manners such as please and thank you. For example, I overheard a student order their meal by saying "Hi, can I have the salmon with white rice and veggies please?" And after the female was served she thanked the cafe worker. Another norm I observed while in Baldwin was that after individuals were done with their main meals, they returned their dirty dishes to the dish return, and on their way back to their tables, they would stop and grab a sweet from the dessert area. I would define this as a folkway norm because most people of society eat dinner first and dessert after. Another folkway norm I discovered that exists in Baldwin hall is that almost everyone who is enjoying their food at the caf is multitasking at least two things. Whether it is eating and talking to friends, eating and doing homework, eating and using the phone, even eating, talking to friends and playing on the phone all at once. One important thing I learned during this assignment is how much students and even professors are attached to their smartphones. Me being a student, and a teenager myself, I have been told numerous times that my generation is addicted to phones and that we can't go 10 minutes without them, and I always disagreed, but this assignment really put ... • 64. The Cultural Expectations And Rules Norms A norm is something that is standard in society. Within sociology, it is specifically the cultural expectations and rules that a person within the culture is supposed to uphold. Norms tell an individual how they should behave within a certain situation. According to Saul McLeod of Simply Psychology (2008), people are expected to behave in a way that is not random. Norms are social standards that are agreed upon by a society so that members of a culture do not deviate into areas that others would consider abnormal and wrong. Also norms vary by culture, so one culture that has an agreed upon and socially practiced norm may vary from another culture that does not do the same thing and instead has different norms. Each culture's norms differ based on beliefs and customs. Norms are a general category of social rules. Taboos, laws, mores, and folkways are all norms. A taboo is something that a culture forbids. Laws are strictly enforced formal rules by the government or social powers within a culture. A more is a norm related to morals; what is deemed right or not within a particular society. Also folkways are customs that are socially accepted, but are not strictly enforced. Following norms are important because an individual is only socially accepted if they follow the set norms. The norm that I violated is a norm within American culture. It is a violation of a norm to clip your toenails when around a group of other individuals within this culture. This norm is ... • 66. A Folkway: An Example Of A Norm In class, we learned that there are different cultures that people live in and therefore they have different views on what is normal and not normal to them. What is a norm? A norm is defined as values and expectations by which a society guides the behavior of its members. There are two types of norms; mores and folkways. A more is a norm that is widely observed and is morally significant. Examples of a mores include maintaining eye contact when speaking to someone, knowing personal space boundaries, waiting in line, and the type of clothing that is appropriate to be worn in public. In comparison, a folkway is a norm for casual routine interactions. This includes avoiding staring, invading space, mumbling, cutting in line, and eating with your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As I was approaching checkout I couldn't help but notice how long all of the lines were. I was beginning to feel really uncomfortable knowing that I had to cut these people who had all been waiting patiently to be checked out. I stood in the back of the line for a while, hearing people comment about how long they had been waiting and how it was taking forever. Observing the people's grocery items I realized that most of them had large carts full of groceries. I had less than four items. Finally, I knew it was time for me to do what I was there to do, and I walked from the back of the line to the front. I walked straight into the line with my head down in hopes of hiding my face. I was almost shaking because of how anxious I was. I just wanted this to be over. It was such a terrible guilty feeling that came over me. My feelings about this would be classified as internal sanctioning. I was listening to what was being said by the customers. I remembered seeing out of the corner of my eye all heads turn to look at me giving me dirty looks, and I heard mumbling amongst the people. Then finally I heard a man say "um excuse me? What do you think you're doing, we have all been waiting here forever, you can't just cut in line like that." This was an example of external sanctioning because it was the reactions of what others were doing. After all was said and done, and I had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Examples Of Norm Violations In this essay, I will be discussing my observations on two norms violation I have observed and personally committed to observe our societies reaction. In order to evaluate the publics reactions a professor name James Henslin defined a norm as a "expectations of 'right' behavior" (49). The way I see a norm was something that our society would never do every day. A norm is not the only violation. Folkways, for example, are "norms that are not strictly enforced" (Henslin 51). Mores are "norms that are strictly enforced because they are thought essential to core values or the wellbeing of the group" (Henslin 51). Just because norms happen everywhere does not mean it is the same violation everywhere. What we may considered something that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So I get dress in my ninja turtle onesie and when I picked up my girlfriend she was so embarrassed already that she told me we are buying our tickets separately. As we arrive at the theaters and she shoots straight out to get in line to buy her ticket and meets me inside the theater room. When I went up to purchase my ticket the employee looks at me as if I was crazy but in a good way because I knew she was not trying to laugh about my outfit. When I left I could hear her dying in laughter saying who wears their pajamas at noon? I give my ticket to the person who rips the ticket and he looks at me and says "sir may I ask but how old are you?" I told him I was 18 and he giggled and shook his head as he pointed what room I was going to. I notice other customers were looking at me but as soon as I glanced at them they looked away trying not to make eye contact with me. • 70. The Consequences Of Social Norms In The American Society In a public setting and in society in general, there are certain rules that are followed unconsciously by people. People are unaware most times that they control and manipulate their behavior to fit into a certain societal setting. While it is perfectly normal to sing along and dance to music in the privacy of the home, it is frowned upon to do such behavior in public. These rules that people tend to follow unconsciously and consciously are referred to as social norms. Social norms vary from culture to culture. In some cultures, like Japan, slurping food is a sign of enjoyment and is welcomed in a public and private setting. However, in America and other societies, slurping food or eating with your mouth open is completely unacceptable. Norms can be broken down into four categories: folkways, mores, taboos, and laws. The social norm that my partner and I chose to breach was a folkway norm. Folkway norms are behaviors that society deems as acceptable and unacceptable behavior such as manners and etiquette. Breaking a folkway brings no serious consequences like breaking a law. In our experiment, we decided to violate dining etiquette. Ashely and I realized that it is perfectly acceptable to consume food on the ground if it is at a park or the privacy of the home and even when most people are participating in the same behavior. It is, however, strange and unusual to see people dining as if in a picnic in a public setting where furniture, such as tables and chairs are offered. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Reflective Analysis Of My Folkway: Clinical Experience Description: When I first drove onto Folkways I was amazed by the amount of land the property laid on. There were trails intertwined between individual houses, apartment buildings, and three story buildings that had common areas. The landscape was gorgeous; with beautiful flowers that were well maintained. When I met bob, the man who gave us a tour, he was very welcoming. He said "you are not a student when you come to folkways; you are apart of our family." In our tour around the property Bob showed his love for Folkways through the interaction with the other residents. He knew the majority of the residents by name, and even the ones he didn't know he was sure to introduce us. Both the residents and the staff were all delightful, making sure ... • 74. Norms Are Social Expectations That Guide Our Behavior As we know, norms are social expectations that guide our behavior. In this paper, I will discuss norm violations that I've observed, and my own personal norm violation that I committed. I will describe what happened, what was done, and the reactions of the people around when these norms begat. I will also discuss the significance of folkways, mores, values, and sanctions to my observations. There were two norms in which I observed. My friend and I could not, at the time, decipher which party was in control, the humans or the dogs? My friend and I decided that this sight was... too much... so we decided to slowly walk away in a backward manner. Having prior knowledge of my sociology norm paper assignment, my friend thought it would be a good idea to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Grieving Styles In Ordinary People Society and culture have created scripts (i.e., social norms) that dictate the ways in which we are to grieve. These scripts also prescribe the unique ways in which men and women are expected to respond to grief. Specifically, men's grief scripts suggest that men will resolve to grieve in solitude as a demonstration of their self–reliance. Men may also have muted emotional response and expressed emotions are typically in the form of anger or guilt (Martin & Doka, 2011). Comparatively, women's grief scripts suggest that women are more emotive and seek support from others to help cope with loss (Martin & Doka, 2011). However, the characters in Ordinary People do not conform to the stereotypical gender grief scripts and instead reflect the different grieving styles captured in Martin and Doka's (2011) grieving styles continuum. Martin and Doka (2011) conceptualizes grieving styles ranging on a continuum from intuitive to instrumental. Grieving styles reflect individuals' ability to adapt to loss and are distinguished by their use of cognitive and affective domains to process grief. Based on Conrad's character in the movie, he could be described as having more of an intuitive grieving style. This style of grieving utilizes more of the affective domain and uses little of the cognitive (Martin & Doka, 2011). For the intuitive griever, grief is characterized by the experience of painful feelings. The feelings of guilt and sadness were those that Conrad experienced the most. After ... • 78. Society's Guidelines And Standards Each society establishes its standards in order to work properly. Those expectations define on how its members should and not behave, and how to relate to one another. Society's guidelines and standards are referred as norms. Norms vary among different societies and even groups within societies may vary. Heslin indicates, "...values are the standards by which people define what is good and bad, beautiful and ugly"(2015, pg.49). Accordingly to their values, different settings and countries call for different norms. In the manner in which we are to behave in a theatre contrasts our behavior at a party versus the way we are expected to act a church. Based on the society's priorities, some norms are unwaveringly enforced whereas lenient with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the man broke a folkway, the woman broke a more, since she may face worse consequences than the man. Both committed the same violation, but the degree of the negative sanctioned was increased for the woman. This reveals how society views men and women when it comes to their public decency and how weighted it is for women to uphold this value than men. Folkways may even be mores for other cultures. In America, it is common for political leaders and other authority figures to point as they speak. At times, pointing at strangers and whispering may indicate a folkway. However in other countries, it is considered extremely rude regardless of the occasion; as in China, you are to point with an open hand. The cultural difference influenced and altered the norm, ultimately affected the result of the sanction. Sanctions can reveal favorable behaviors as well. Positive incentives, from smiles to monetary rewards, can encourage certain behaviors. For example, scholarships and some form of financial aid are incentives to encourage high school students to strive for higher education. Society arranges these standard norms to reflect their core values. As a whole, members intend to not violate them on a constant basis. I observed violation happen more often than what I anticipated and I realized how assimilated I am to the norms. For example, my first observation was at my non– denominational church. From ...
