Alfred Hitchcock Film Analysis
I've gone on the record as saying I like Alfred Hitchcock's films, though I only really love one so far ("Psycho"). My admiration for Hitchcock,
along with the number of his films I love, increased after we watched his beloved "Vertigo" in my class. It may have barely surpassed "Psycho" as
my favorite Hitchcock film. This film stars James Stewart as John "Scottie" Ferguson, a San Francisco detective forced to quit the force after a
traumatizing event causes him to develop acrophobia. He soon takes up a case as a sort of private eye, however, when an old acquaintance from
college asks him to investigate the strange habits of his wife (Kim Novak). Stewart obliges, with dire consequences. One of the surprises in this
film, for me, was Stewart as Scottie, who performed excellently. I like Jimmy Stewart, but I've never been as enamored with him as some movie
buffs. That has changed some, as I think this is his best performance I've seen. He makes you care for his character and believe his motivations and
feelings for the first portion of the movie. He struggles a bit in the emotional scenes, but he still succeeds in evoking our sympathy. By the end of the
film, his performance takes a remarkable turn and he becomes genuinely disturbing. It's brilliant. Kim Novak is also great as Madeleine Elster, the
wife Stewart's character follows. She has a creepy, disturbing quality about her during that first part of the movie that works quite well. Later, her
performance takes a turn,

Serial Killers as Heroes in Popular Culture

Unit 2: Week 2– Reader Response – Assignment 1 A serial killer could be dining, sitting, or even living next to you at this very moment. Most
killers offer little to no obvious clues that will lead anyone to detect their often secretive, undercover actions. I ask myself, "How can we be so naive
to these types of people?" Serial killers amongst us are often well educated, portray an All–American image, yet have a psychotic side to them. First,
most serial killers are often well educated. Hannibal Lecter in the movie "Silence of the Lambs" is a psychologist. Who ... Show more content on

In "Natural Born Celebrities: Serial Killers in American Culture," serial killers are defined as clean cut, normal, All–American people. Some
interviewees shared in chapter five state that the reason why it takes so long for the culprits to be apprehended is attributed to the ability to carry on
with a normal life. One even offered that in one instance, his victim actually thought he was joking when he kidnapped her to eventually murder her. In "
Mr. Brooks," Earl again is a very successful person. He is an ordinary, suit wearing, clean shaven, clean cut, successful Portland, Oregon businessman. I
imagine that his killing addiction would shock even his closest, everyday coworkers. Hannibal Lecter is a former psychiatrist. I can't even begin to
imagine the amount of schooling that he endured and numerous certifications, both federal and state, that he must have attained. Yet, he did not like
arrogant and obnoxious people, therefore, he murdered them. Despite being well educated and portraying an All–American image, serial killers have a
psychotic side to them. Hannibal Lecter showed this side of him when he killed two prison guards. Not only did he murder them but he ate some of
their body parts and even carved out the face of one of them to use as a way of disguising himself when he escaped from prison. Earl Brooks murdered
in such a cold hearted way. Evidence of this is

Life Lessons You Learn From Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is a famous actor, director and philanthropist. She is also one of the most influential people of the new generation. Aside from her
radical views on health awareness and consistent effort on humanitarian aid, this award–winning actress has stole the love of millions of people every
time she goes out with her husband, Brad Pitt, and six loving kids.
In 2001, Angelina joined United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after witnessing the difficult life of people in war–torn Cambodia. This
leads to her advocacies on education, child protection, and human and women rights.

I find scars attractive.
Never feel inferior because of your imperfections in life. Your flaws are the reminder of all the struggles you have surpassed and growth you have
reached. Be proud of them like they are your battle scars. Remember, imperfections make a person beautiful because it shows how strong you are.
Save one–third, live on one–third, and give away one–third
Even a star like Angelina, knows the importance of saving for the future. Life would be better if you are less worried about your finance. Learn to
live within your means and learn to save money. With the notion of good karma, give back to those who are in need, and the universe will return it in
better ways.
I'm looking very much forward to growing older. I want to be an exhausted older woman but with a very full life behind me and one still going.
Don't be afraid to grow old, it is an achievement not all people experience. Growing old is a sign of maturity and wisdom. Be proud of your wrinkles
and gray hair because they prove how much you have achieved and how much more you can attain.
Angelina Jolie is more than Evelyn Salt, Maleficent and all the other famous characters she portrayed. She inspires people through her work and
through her words. And hearing an A–list actor experience the same problems, ordinary people experience, makes her more lovable and

Alfred Hitchcock Point Of View
Alfred Hitchcock's cinematic style contains an array of stylistic devices, notably the point–of–view shot. Using point of view editing, the audience
"repeatedly [sees] events through the eyes of an individual character." (Walker) The audience is privy to only what the character knows and likewise
absorbs the character's emotional journey. As the audience's emotional investment/identification with theprotagonist grows, so does the plot amplifying
the audience's empathy for the character's heartache, longing, and anxiety, creating the perfect recipe for a suspenseful thriller. Hitchcock employs
point–of–view editing in the films, Rear Window and Vertigoto exemplify the protagonist's mindset and to control the amount of information the
audience made be aware of.
The 1954 film, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The audience is only privy to the information that protagonist has. Therefore, the audience experiences the same emotions and anxiety as the
protagonist. Hitchcock controls how much information the audience is given by narrowing it a single character's perspective. Like Jeffries, the
audience becomes suspicions as to whether or not his neighbor, Lars has actually murdered his wife. Additionally, the audience feels the same panic
and fear when he witnesses Lisa being trapped in the apartment by Lars. As Jeffries focuses more on each character, the audience learns more about
that character's personality and life. For instance, Jeffries nicknames a woman in a lower floor, Miss Lonelyhearts. Together the audience witnesses
with Jeffries Miss Lonelyhearts throwing an invisible guest a dinner party before she breaks down in tears. (Walker) After identifying with her
sadness, the audience feels an added sense of panic and anxiety when Miss Lonelyhearts is seen with a bottle of pills and alcohol, insinuating suicidal
plans at the same time Lisa is being trapped by

Comparison between Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid" and Rowan...

Subject: Art History
The most apparent similarity between these two films is that both films revolve around the daily lives of the main characters.
The main characters, Charlie and Mr. bean, in The Kid and Mr. Bean – The Ultimate Disaster Movie respectively, both have child–like qualities, and
the tendency to be rather mischievous. Mr. Bean is naive and self–centered, sometimes to the extent of becoming somewhat mean. Despite his
considerable age, he still sleeps cuddled up with his teddy bear. Nothing is sacred to him, and he plays his games with an earnest sheepishness. His
childish directness and honesty, while offensive at times, are his sharpest weapons. The little... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bean himself, in a typically 'English' environment, then later putting him in an 'international' environment. Being release in 1997 it is a light–hearted
satire of how the more conservative English society reacts to and attempt to adapt to rapidly changing international standards and the shifts in power.
The main difference of these two movies is that The Kid aims to bring some cheer to its audiences' hearts by showing how joy can still be found in
the gloomiest conditions (as depicted in the daily lives of Charlie and the child he has adopted) and also to reflect the state of the society while Mr.
Bean – The Ultimate Disaster Movie seeks to bring some comic relief into the highly stressful lifestyle of the modern–day individual, by actually letting
them laugh at a highly exaggerated, and therefore comic, version of 'themselves'.
As mentioned earlier, the era in which Charlie Chaplin's The Kid was made did not allow for colour or sound to be incorporated into its production.
Being disadvantaged in this area, the actors in the film had to make up for it by emphasizing on facial expressions and body movements, in order to
express thoughts and emotions, and also to portray certain unique mannerisms and character traits of the various characters in the story. Modern–day
audiences who are unaccustomed to this form of acting might feel uncomfortable viewing films from the silent era, because the actors may seem to
them, to be over–acting to an outrageous

Vertigo– Hitchcock Defying Genre
"...alternatively, a film can revise or reject the conventions associated with its genre" – Bordwell
Based on the French novel D'Entre les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, Vertigo is arguably one of Alfred Hitchcock's masterpieces and
the "strangest, yet most hauntingly beautiful film he had ever made" (Adair, 2002). At the time, its far–fetched plot drew a mixed response from critics
– Time magazine called the movie a "Hitchcock and bull story" – but today most agree that it is one of the director's most deeply felt pictures. Vertigo
very easily categorized into a specific genre – Thriller, a genre of movies that, in many ways, Hitchcock played a major role in defining. Thrillers are ...

He finally settles down onto the couch, facing away from the toilet door, waiting. As the bathroom door opens, he turns to his left, and we only see his
left profile (Fig 1.), a mirror image to the first time he set eyes on Madeleine in the restaurant – unsure, and this time, full of anticipation. We are
reminded of the green motif, by the neon light outside Judy's apartment. As Scottie turns around to fully see the resurrected Madeleine, he slowly
stands up and at this point the music starts to pick up, leading us to the point at which he sees his beloved. The camera tracks into a close up of
Scottie's face, with the green light reflecting off his eye, he almost looks like he has tears in his eyes (Fig 2.). Cut to Judy/ Madeleine stepping out
of the toilet, it is Scottie's POV of Madeleine bathed in ghostly green light. Similar to the scene in the cemetery where Madeleine was shot through
a fog filter, which gave her the green glow, Judy/ Madeleine now had green light superimposed around her body, which gave her the appearance of a
blurred, ghostly figure (Fig 3.). This reflected Madeleine coming back from the dead, now a ghost, as green is usually used to represent ghost or
spirits in film. She then slips out of the blur and into focus, Hitchcock used this to indicate Scottie's come back to reality, coming to his senses as he
spots the locket in the next scene, realizing that Judy has been tricking him all along (Truffaut, 1985).

Personal Narrative- Christmas Cookies Essay
Personal Narrative– Christmas Cookies
Although I have grown up to be entirely inept at the art of cooking, as to make even the most wretched chef ridicule my sad baking attempts, my
childhood would have indicated otherwise; I was always on the countertop next to my mother's cooking bowl, adding and mixing ingredients that
would doubtlessly create a delicious food. When I was younger, cooking came intrinsically with the holiday season, which made that time of year the
prime occasion for me to unite with ounces and ounces of satin dark chocolate, various other messy and gooey ingredients, numerous cooking utensils,
and the assistance of my mother to cook what would soon be an edible masterpiece. The most memorable of the holiday works of ... Show more content

intelligent child I was found that once the chocolate is mixed with two cups of sugar, the bitterness is alleviated into an addicting batter, which makes
one smile instead of cringe.
Once my mother finished with the "I told you so's" concerning the unsweetened chocolate, I was able to mold the dough into cookies and roll it
through a flurry of powdered sugar. This was probably my favorite part, because I could get creative with the shapes of the cookies, snowmen being
my favorite. While making my snowmen, I came upon a dilemma; I thought about making a Santa Claus figurine out of my dough, but my mother was
Jewish, so I wasn't quite sure what man comes down the chimney on Hanukah. My father, being Catholic, had always talked about a plump guy with a
rosy face that wriggled down the chimney at Christmas, but nobody had ever mentioned anything about chimneys and Hanukah. After voicing my
predicament, my slightly senile and loopy grandmother, who was also in the room, cast a scornful look my way and boomed, "Santa Moses, of
course!" I couldn't picture what a Santa

Theme Of Vertigo By Paul Austers Mr Vertigo
To fight through downfall "I was twelve years old the first time I walked on water" is the first line in Paul Austers Mr. Vertigo, a book about a
child's dream and the journey to reach them. The book takes place in America at 1927 where a young boy named Walt is approached by a strange
man, called Master Yehudi and is offered a chance in a lifetime, the ability to fly. As he goes with him he chooses a difficult path that will bring
both wonders and despair. This is a book telling about a boys big ambition to overcome all hardship that lives throws in his way. The ability to
overcome hardship can be seen through the protagonist personality, his ambition to reach greatness. He was a nobody, a nothing, so when he is
offered the chance to achieve something greater he takes it. "Not like a bird, my little man. Like a god. You'd be the wonder of wonders, Walt, the
holy of holies. As long as men walked the earth, they'd worship you as the greatest among them." (Auster 74). He has an ambition so extraordinary
and he is willing to do anything to reach his goal, suffer through hardship so repulsing that no human ever should need to go through. He got buried
alive, cuts of a part of his finger and so many inhuman things, but he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Jane starts a conversation with Helen, a student who was flogged without reason. She can't understand why Helen would bear the pain and not rebel.
Jane's rebellious nature can be seen in this passage. She has a hostility towards violent authority. This is most likely caused by her time spent at the
Reeds where she was constantly treated without respect.
"'And if I were in your place I should dislike her; I should resist her. If she struck me with that rod, I should get it from her hand; I should break it under
her nose.'"

For the first time, Jane sees Miss Ingram, observing her closely. She realizes that Miss Ingram seems to feel that she is better than everyone else. Jane
doesn't seem to have many good feelings towards Miss Ingram.
Within this passage, it becomes obvious that Miss Ingram is exceedingly haughty. She boasts of her knowledge subtly, and loves to make herself seem
superior to others. She is always seeking to seem better than everyone else whether knowledge–wise or skill–wise.
"It was not, however, so saturnine a pride! She laughed continually; her laugh was satirical, and so was the habitual expression of her arched and
haughty lip. Genius is said to be self–conscious. I cannot tell whether Miss Ingram was a

The Social/Economic Upper-Class in England in Mrs....
The social/economic upper–class in England in Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of
Dorian Gray are depicted through the characters' lifestyles, wealth, and behaviors. Woolf, Austen, and Wilde give insightful portrayals of the characters
by emphasizing their social roles in the England society. Their portrayals of the characters suggest that they are critical of the upper–class' factitious
lifestyles. Members of England's social/economic upper–class in Woolf's, Austen's, and Wilde's literary works are distinguished by their lifestyles. In
Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, the upper–class appear to have a simple and comfortable life. One of Woolf's focuses of the upper–class'... Show more content

When Austen states that "the man and one of the maids were sent off immediately into Devonshire" (Austen 21), she indicates that the Dashwood's
servants perform all of their household duties. The upper–class women spend their leisure time attending private balls and parties hosted by the elite,
whom they also mingle and journey with. When Austen says that Lady Middleton "had the advantage of being able to spoil her children all the year
round" (Austen 25), she suggests that the upper–class live a luxurious lifestyle because they are able to indulge in whatever their heart desires. In
Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, he describes the lives of the upper–class by detailing their pleasurable lifestyle. Much like the upper–class' lifestyle
in Mrs. Dalloway and Sense and Sensibility, their lifestyle include attending social gatherings and upholding their outer appearances in high esteem.
Wilde notes that the upper–class like to associate themselves with people of the same social importance. Lord Henry's statement that "there is only one
thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about" (Wilde 4), implies that maintaining their social importance in the
society was a daily responsibility for the upper–class. Lady Narborough, much like Clarissa in Mrs. Dalloway, does not have a profession. Therefore,
in her spare time she "devoted herself now to the pleasures of French fiction, French cookery, and French espirit when she could get it"

The Theme of Mental Health Illustrated in Woolf's Mrs....
'Mrs. Dalloway', by Virginia Woolf is a derivative text of 'The Hours', written by Michael Cunningham. The novels both share an important theme of
mental health. The circumstances of mental health are commonly sympathetic, and empathetic. The characters Septimus and Clarissa in 'Mrs.
Dalloway' and Richard, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolfin 'The Hours' show the strongest symbols for this theme. Most of the problems and
treatments these characters face are in direct result of the age they live in. Both novels express a relationship between era, illnesses and treatments. The
clearest illness was that of Septimus, in 'Mrs. Dalloway'. Septimus suffered from shell–shock, a result of the First World War. This illness in turn
brought about an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, the sinister Sir William Bradshaw wishes Septimus were in a 'rest' home and to undergo re–programming. Bradshaw's awareness is
especially revealing of the attitude of some doctors at the time:
'Health we must have; and health is proportion; so that when a man comes into your room and says he is Christ... ...and has a message... ...and
threatens... ...to kill himself, you invoke proportion; order rest in bed; rest in solitude; silence and rest; rest without friends, without books; without
messages; six months' rest...' (Page 110).
Woolf's own experiences could be reflected off of those of Bradshaw's thoughts. Woolf portrays doctors to be useless. The delusions of Septimus are
shown through Woolf's characteristic stream of consciousness style.
'Once you fall, Septimus repeated to himself, human nature is on you. Holmes and Bradshaw are on you. They scour the desert. They fly screaming
into the wilderness. The rack and the thumbscrew are applied. Human nature is remorseless.' (Page 108).
Through this quote, the reader is able to see the way in which Septimus' thoughts are portrayed. The thoughts of Septimus show him to be a helpless
victim. When understanding the way Septimus is being treated by the doctor, the reader can not help but feel sympathy for him. Woolf's use of stream
of consciousness is that of cautiousness and delicacy. In 'The Hours' Richard, a gay poet dying of AIDS is Septimus' mirror

Mrs. Dalloway
I. Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf, was published on May 14, 1925 in London, England. The novel follows Clarissa Dalloway and a variety of other
characters throughout the span of one day in their lives in 1923 London. Woolf utilizes a narrative method of writing. With the novel's structure, the
narrator possesses the ability to move inside of a character's mind and compose her thoughts and emotions immediately as events occur throughout the
day. The novel's main character, Clarissa, is a middle–aged woman who belongs to the upper–middle class in society and is well–married to a Member
of Parliament–Richard Dalloway. Clarissa's day is full of arrangements for a dinner party she plans to host that evening. During the novel, numerous

Rather than hold lengthy conversations between characters, she frequently writes only of small talk and leaves more serious topics to be recited in
an individual's exclusive thoughts. One of her purposes in writing the novel is to expose the hypocrisy of society. The characters in the novel range
from eccentric acquaintances to extravagant lords and ladies to vindictive tutors to suicidal veterans. One example of this theme occurs when Rezia
and Septimus attempt to settle down in the park. When the airplane soars overhead, she writes, "Tears ran down his cheeks (Woolf 21)." While one
may mistake this as joy or, at worst, sorrow over the recent war, Woolf gives the reality of the action beneath the surface, stating, "They are signaling
to me... this exquisite beauty... but he would not go mad. He would see no more (21)." While Septimus dwindles on the brink of insanity, Rezia
chatters away about nature, unaware of the mess resting beside her. Septimus portrays the appearance of one man yet expresses an entirely new
persona through his contemplations. Another instance of the theme transpires when Miss Kilman and Clarissa wait for Elizabeth to retrieve her gloves
before going shopping. Clarissa and Kilman both make attempts at small talk. However, both give their attentions to a mutual disgust of each other.
Clarissa simply asks if Kilman is taking Elizabeth to the stores. Kilman replies dryly, but in

The Graduate and Plastics
The Graduate is a 1967 film directed by Mike Nichols who won an Oscar for his direction. This hit of the 60's focuses on the development and the
maturing of the ultra–naïve college graduate Benjamin Braddock. This movie is about "just one word...Plastics." Mr. McQuire sums up this
entire movie when he tells Ben that there is "a great future in plastics." In this film the relationships, except the one between Ben and Elaine, are like
plastic because they are not real, they are molded, and they are artificial.

Robinson is the only one who recognizes the falsehood of the marriage. When Mr. Robinson confronts Ben he tells him that he and his wife "are
getting a divorce soon." Mr. Robinson acts as though the affair is the only reason for the divorce, which may be true in his mind. We never know the
thoughts of Mr. Robinson he might truly love Mrs. Robinson but we can never know for certain. Mr. Robinson, like Ben, is naïve to the world
around him. He is in his own artificially created world, a world made of plastic, created by plastic relationships.
When Ben is seduced by Mrs. Robinson he enters a world of plastic. Like plastic, this world is capable of being shaped into the desired world of the
manipulator. The manipulator in this instance is the decadent and sardonic Mrs. Robinson. She holds the cards because she knows how to play the
game. Ben is young, naïve, and inexperienced. Mrs. Robinson spots these characteristics and uses them to get her way. When Ben questions
their actions, she insults his masculinity by claiming this is his "first time" which leads to their first sexual encounter. Mrs. Robinson knows how to
control him so that he does take part in this affair because at the moment all she wants is him. I don't think that Ben has any idea what he is doing; it is
almost as though he has nothing better to do than to have an affair with Mrs.

There was a long pause and Ellie instantly became nervous. It was never good when her stepmother paused like this. There was a sharp whistling
noise that sounded like Frances was sucking air between the gaps of her front teeth. Only when Mrs. Tuttle had gone to fetch the potatoes did Frances
speak.
"Ellie, come over to the rug," she said. "Stand behind that chair, so I can see you."
She did as she was told, placing her hands behind her back and forcing herself to look at the odious visage of her stepmother. Everything about the
woman seemed repellent; her cold, marble face and those lifeless gray eyes. She did not seem real, this statue of a woman. She did not seem to be
possessed of those usual qualities of humanity: love, forgiveness, patience, and compassion.
"It is not your place to correct me, Eleanor Katherine," she said imperiously. "When I say something, there is to be unquestioned obedience, every

Ellie bowed her head. "Yes, madam, of course."
"You know that I do not permit back talk in this house," she continued, eyeing her sharply. "You have a dreadful penchant for it, but I suppose that was

Overtones In To Kill A Mockingbird
Harper Lee is a fan of using subtle undertones and overtones everywhere in her book To Kill a Mockingbird. A good example of this is with the
quote "'Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of [another]...There are just some kind of men...who're
so busy worrying about the next world they've never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results.'" (pg. 60). This
quote, as a stand–alone, gets gears turning, but once it's paired with the rest of the book, it gives an entirely new perspective on a problem that so
many people ignore or don't notice. Her book is completely littered with examples that back up this quote and it's intended meaning. A few examples of
this is when the foot–washers call Miss Maudie and her flowers a sin, when the foot–washers quote scripture to Miss Maudie and she quotes some right
back, when Mrs. Farrow talks about the blacks as if they are wild animals, when Mrs. Merriweather talks about the cooks and field hands grumbling
after Tom's Trials and when Jem is explaining to Dill why Dolphus Raymond is somewhat of a town outcast.
Some of the extremely devout people (the foot–washers for example), tend to be more worried about the next life instead of enjoying the one they
currently have. By preferring to be inside reading the Bible instead of outdoors enjoying life and wanting others to do the same, they show how the
Bible gives the ability to be scrutinized less by peers. But

Essay Growing Up, Staying Young
Growing Up, Staying Young
I had trouble sleeping that night. The peaceful, rhythmic breathing of my younger sister across the room could not calm me as I lay under the covers
in the dark, listening for the heavy footsteps of an elderly man sneaking through the downstairs floor of my house. With one hand firmly choking Red
Blankie, I reached with the other to turn the alarm clock on my bedstand toward me. The fluorescent red digits whispered 12:03 in the still, black
room. Perhaps he will come soon.
Delicate tingles danced up my arms, as I froze like a nervous cat, ears up, ready and alert. I rehearsed the carefully planned sequence of events in my
head. A suspicious and unfamiliar sound from the living room would be my... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"This world is but a canvas to our imagination," wrote Henry David Thoreau. As a young child, I clung to this inspirational message and ran with it to
millions of marvelous places in my mind. I believed in everything, from my "invisible" collie Fluffy to Santa Claus, Rudolf, and the rest of the reindeer.
Everything I saw and heard and read sang to me, inspired me, and thrilled me.
When my mom wouldn't let me have a puppy, Fluffy came into my life. She was my imaginary collie, every bit as real as the dogs I saw climbing
against the scratched windows of the mall pet shops. I took her for walks around my back yard, fed her juicy crimson mulberries from our tree, and
taught her to rescue children from burning buildings, like Lassie did on Nickelodeon. My time with Fluffy was limited, however, when I found a job
in the restaurant business. As the owner, waiter, and cook, I spent many hours in the red and yellow playhouse in my basement taking orders from
hungry customers and preparing exotic foods for their culinary pleasure.
My best friend Jenny joined me in many of my childhood adventures. After reading Freckle Juice by Judy Blume in second grade, she and I were
convinced we could get rid of her horrible brown freckles with a fantastic concoction of rainbow colored vitamins, brilliant blue bathroom cleanser,
delightful soap bubbles, hairspray mist, and two tablespoons of mouthwash. Unfortunately, Jenny

The Silance Of Music In Alfred Hitchcock's Vrtigo
Vertigo is a 1958 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. The film follows the
acrophobic, retired San Francisco detective, John 'Scottie' Ferguson (Stewart) who is hired to trail his friend's wife, Madeleine (Novak), but falls
in love with her in the process. When Madeleine dies in what is deemed a suicide, John becomes depressed and begins to obsess over Judy
(Novak), who looks exactly like the Madeleine he knew. After changing Judy's appearance to be a doppelganger of Madeleine, John comes to find
out that he had actually fallen in love with Judy pretending to be Madeleine, because she was part of a plot to murder the real Madeleine. One aspect
of the film that is interesting is the way the balance of music and dialogue add to the suspense of the story. As stated in James Berardinelli's review of
Vertigo, "There are numerous, lengthy passages that pass without dialogue (most of these occur while John is trailing Madeleine), and Herrmann's
music sustains Hitchcock's carefully–crafted tone." As well as to create these interesting scenes that rely almost entirely on visuals to tell the story, the
music has an important role of building the feeling of suspense, complete with the typical thriller crescendos used to foreshadow a big event. This film
has many technical aspects that help it stand apart from others and the musical choices made are a clear example of this. Another aspect of this film
that is fantastic is the

Analysis of Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and...
Transitions of place, time, and character are key to the storytelling in Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's Children" and Virginia Woolfe's "Mrs.
Dalloway". Rushdie explores the History, Nationalism and Hybridism of the nation of India after they became independent of Great Britain. Woolfe
comments heavily on English society more through her description of her characters, and the weaving of time and place is an effective way to
telling the stories of her characters as we follow them through a single day. This essay will compare in three passages from "Midnight's Children" the
effectiveness of transitioning from place and time to the way Woolfe did so in "Mrs. Dalloway". Furthermore, it will explore why each passage is a
good demonstration of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This parallels the narrative structure of the novel as being circular, discontinuous and digressive. The same can easily be said for Mrs Dalloway as the
novel almost jarringly weaves through many points of view. This fragmentation appropriates the concept of history in "Midnight's Children", which
was developed by colonizers. History works for a particular class of ideology, and therefore it will be contaminated, oblique and subjective. In Mrs.
Dalloway the characters themselves are subjective commentaries on English society, and they have been subjectively contaminated by Woolfe's
opinions of who they represent.
The functionality of history is grounded in the simple assumption that life is shaped like a story. Whereas Woolfe admittedly wrote in an
experimental style that was more of a slice of life than a traditionally shaped story with a beginning, middle, and end. For Saleem, who is "buffeted
by too much history", it is his memory which creates his own history. The same is true of everyone in "Mrs. Dalloway". "Memory, as well as fruit,
is being saved from the corruption of the clocks". This quote could have easily been in Mrs. Dalloway, particularly when Clarissa reacted to the
suicide of Septimus and seemed to fear the aging brought on by ticking clocks. Yet, for Rushdie, it is not based on the universal empty time that has
been conceptualized by the colonizers. Notions of time and space are integrated into both novels.
The novel critiques

My Current Company For Three Years
I have worked for my current company for three years. In that time, I have worked under two Directors with two very different leadership styles. My
first Director was more of an autocratic leader "who tends to centralize authority and derive power from position, control of rewards, and coercion"
(Daft, 2015). Conversely, my second and current Director is a democratic leader who "delegates authority to others, encourages participation, relies on
subordinates' knowledge for completion of tasks, and depends on subordinates respect for influence" (Daft, 2015). These two leadership styles are
completely opposite, but leadership is needed in organizations. "Leadership is the heart and soul of an organization. Leadership is the ability to inspire

could not talk to my Director I sought out other managers within the organization to mentor me and help fulfill the expectations that I had for a
supervisor. The stressful environment that I worked in made it hard for me to grow professionally. I also had very little motivation to work hard for
someone who never acknowledged any of my achievements. Her type of leadership made me work just hard enough to avoid receiving an email from
her detailing what I had done incorrectly. Due to her lack of management, there was no trust between us because I did not respect her as a superior. I
completed exactly what was required and nothing more because the motivation was not there for me to give that extra effort. She also routinely
criticized subordinates in front of others causing "humiliation, offence and distress, and which may interfere with job performance and/or cause an
unpleasant working environment" (Cooper, 2010). Due to her treatment of myself and my peers none of us were willing to go above and beyond
what was asked of us. It was tough to know what was expected of us because we never had team meetings or one–on–one meetings to outline

Christmas Eve
Christmas is magical in the eyes of a child. At least, that's how it was for me. Every year, as the month of December rolled around, the lights were
strung and the trees were set up, I sent my letter out with a hopeful heart that Santa would make an appearance on my doorstep on Christmas Eve.
The December of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I mailed my wish list to Santa, knowing he would prevail and deliver that
Razor electric scooter with a hand brake and fat tires. Christmas morning was perfect! Santa had brought me a plum colored, shiny, and fully
charged electric scooter and my younger sister, Olivia, a hot pink one. They were perched on their small silver kickstands in front of our eight
foot tree that was weighed down with years worth of homemade and souvenir ornaments. The scooters were free of a box or wrapping, just how
Santa always brought the gifts. As soon as the all of the presents were ripped open and breakfast eaten, I pranced outside to test out my new ride. It
was a crisp, wintry morning with gray skies. I cruised back and forth on the scooter in front of my house for hours, accelerating on the uphills and
coasting on the downhills with the cold wind blowing through my tangled hair and my nose turning pink from the low temperatures. It was my
absolute favorite present. Fast forward a few days, the Saturday following Christmas, and I was hiking up the red clay hill that began to incline as

Themes In Vertigo
Vertigo is a 1958 American Psychological thriller film directed by one of the best director of all times, Alfred Hitchcock. The movie shows many
contexts like fear, obsession and fantasy. The movie starts when John (Scottie) Ferguson (James Stewart) a detective retires from his job when his
fellow officer loses his life falling from the height. In this moment, he accidentally gains acrophobia (fear of height). His friend Gavin Elster (Tom
Helmore) wants him to tail and follow Madeleine (Kim Novak) who is acting weird and strange recently. Scottie blames himself and feels guilty when
he can't save Madeleine from jumping off the tower. The film throughout the time shows the different contexts to relate the theme of obsession and
sexual fantasy. The film is one of the top example in use of camera, cinematography, score and direction. The movie successfully portrays how love
turns into obsession, how fear leads these characters into different madness, by the perfect use of color, cinematography and use of characters. Color
is one of the essential part of the movie. The use of color can determine various emotions in the film. It can add richness to any scene. The use of white
has always shown to describe the peace and purity, whereas the red describes rage, anger and bad. Black is color of mystery usually used to show the
darkness, evilness of a scene. Hitchcock is a big fan of use of color, he has perfectly used the colors to demonstrate the characters build up and add the
depth to it. Scottie sees Madeleine for the first time in the restaurant wearing a dark green color dress which makes her focus among the other people.
Scottie starts feeling something her, next day again when he follows her, Madeleine drives green car which again tries to state that she is the main
focus. The use of alternative colors in the movie depicts how the characters are build up to the story, red is shown as the Scottie's obsession, fantasy
and love whereas green to create this uncanniness, and unrealism and yellow as a reality, and truth of the matter.
In the next scene, Madeline drives to Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco which is red. She was again showed in a green dress, which matches the
sea color green. She jumps into the sea

Adaptations of Virginia Wolfe Essay
In approaching a topic such as adaptations, one has to first understand what exactly adaptation means and how it is applied to such works to get the
product the "adapter" is trying to create and for what reasons they are "adapting" for. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Adaptation as the
following: "1(a). The act for process of adapting. 1(b). The state of being adapted. 2. A composition recast into a new form: "The play is an
adaptation of a short novel." 3. An alteration or adjustment by which a species or individual improves itscondition in relationship to its environment.

Woolf takes the reader on a psychological roller coaster with flashbacks to Mrs. Dalloway's' life, specifically her teen–age to college years. She shows
us all of the decisions Dalloway had to make and how those decisions had shaped her life. Clarissa Dalloway had chosen a life that would be safe
for her, by marrying well and having a child, by living the proper political life. Throughout the novel, Clarissa thinks back onto how she could have
had a life of sexual freedom and excitement with Richard, her ex–lover from her college years. Of course this is all put into play by the arrival of him
from India, because she hadn't seen him in a very long time. All of these occurrences and flashbacks just add to Clarissa's growing–depression that she
barely is able to hold onto in the story. The most interesting and most significant aspect of Mrs. Dalloway is that it takes place in one day, which is
what Cunningham and Daldry built their book and movie off of. The idea of telling a story of a woman's thoughts in one day is an amazing one
because it is so intrinsic and specific that going past one day would take forever to divulge and digest. One of the most important parts of Mrs.
Dalloway is the relationship between Septimus and Clarissa. Woolf uses Septimus, a war veteran who's got shell shock, as the alternate persona to
Clarissa. I like to think that Septimus was the brain and

Biology with Mr. Carmichael is not so bad. He teaches you very well and explains things to you so that you will understand. There are a lot of
notes but you will be fine if you write them down. Because they help you out a lot and most of your homework will rely on your homework. Study a
lot before the quizzes and tests because trust me you will need the studying. The labs are honestly not so bad so just finish them and get them turned it
and you will do great in Biology!
Last class, I will be giving advice to you for is Geometry with Mrs. Backstrom. Some of you don't need this advice because you probably already

In stark contrast, to Roderick's recklessness towards Christina, James shows Mrs Light's ardent devotion towards her daughter, whom she once
regarded as, a "very ugly baby; for the first two years I could hardly bear to look at her..." (208), and such dedication is the direct result of a religious
revelation that, in fact, Christina is profoundly beautiful. Mrs Light's about–face concerning Christina's prettiness, she conveys to Rowland as a
mythological tale in which she sees "a little girl of four or five, very fantastically dressed" (208) whom she is taken aback by the child's beauty and

This helplessness is apparent by his emotional outburst to her astute comments: thus proving her point that he is weak. While the couple talk,
Rowland observes them in secret and hears the twosomes discuss among other things Roderick's fiancГ©e, Miss Garland. Again, Christina strikes a
nerve concerning Roderick's treatment of his fiancГ©e, "I believe that, really, you don't greatly care for your friend in America..." (216), and what
she says next is the trait of someone who is perceptive in judging the moral conduct of others, "any more than you do for me. You are one of the men
who care only for themselves and for what they can make of themselves." (216) Miss Light's statement seems hypocritical as she too is self–absorbed,
nevertheless, her awareness of this fault in Roderick and even herself alerts the reader to the possibility she cares enough for the artist in order for him
to leave her with some semblance of dignity.
At any rate, Roderick tries to disprove her theory that he is

Edmund when instead of controling him and punishing after a fight he thinks to himslef "Perhaps I should strike him. Perhaps it is very foolish to let

Essay about North by Northwest, by Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock's film North by Northwest (1959) is famed as a classic man–on–the–run thriller, following protagonist Roger Thornhill as he flees
across state lines in a mad dash to save his life and unravel the mystery to his extraordinary predicament. However, mid–way through the film
Thornhill's quandary is further complicated by the introduction of Eve Kendall, a beautiful yet mysterious woman he encounters on a train during his
escape from the authorities and people trying to kill him. During the dining room scene on the train, Hitchcock expertly uses the camera to convey the
characters thoughts and feelings. Interestingly, in a film that has several sequences with complicated cinematography and editing, the dining car scene is

Once the flirtations between the two in intensify, Hitchcock transitions into using close shots, beginning when Eve discloses her bribe arranging
Thornhill being seated with her, and her subsequent reveal that she knows Thornhill wanted for murder. The use of the close shot provides a better,
more intimate view of their expressions as they banter back and forth and the sexual innuendos ramp up. Thornhill's thoughts are particularly evident
across his face as he changes from showing interest in the attractive woman across from him, to tension at being recognized by her, to unabashed
glee at the prospect of sleeping with same said beautiful woman, and finally to alarm as he learns police are boarding the train. In contrast to
Thornhill's expressive looks, Hitchcock shows Eve's as being more controlled and understated. Throughout her linguistic dance with Thornhill, Eve
manages to maintain an air of surety about herself, revealing only those pieces of information that she wants him to know. She manages to exude a
sense of cool certainty and control during arguably the most sexually suggestive moment of the film: in the only profile shot of the scene, the camera
shows Eve as she slowly blows out the flame on the match Thornhill uses to light her cigarette, clasping his hand as she does so. This aura of calm
calculation gives the sense that she is in complete control, no doubt due

The Great Divide By John Woolf And Forster 's ' Howard 's...

The Great Divide
There were several prevailing thoughts towards connections present during the time in England on the cusp of High Modernism. The importance of
connections with others was one that was specifically addressed in much of the literature. E.M. Forster even highlighted the idea in his novel
"Howard's End" with the epigraph "only connect". The idea supports the notion that, in order for a society to survive and thrive, some degree of
connection must be adequately maintained. Yet, through the stratification ofsocial classes in England at the time, there was little social connection
being preserved. To address the issue, authors likeVirginia Woolfand Forster included connection as a prominent theme in their works. Both Woolf's
"Mrs. Dalloway" and Forster's "Howard's End" address connection through their characters as well as geographical locations. In each of these stories,
the underlying theme of connecting highlights the characters' struggles to "only connect".
It would seem as if Forster is urging connection by illustrating that, without some degree of connecting, social classes would remain stratified and
society would fall into utter ruin. Through the intermingling of characters in "Howard's End", Forster suggests that connecting in such a way is
progress. He further advocates and suggests that progress should be presented as a positive thing, and, in order for a society to flourish, connections

Short Story : How The Clothes Were Made Before The War '
The craft room inside the windmill had high arched windows and fresh white paint on the walls. It was where Miss Pennycress spent most of her
time when she sewed, painted, and even threw her own pots. There were shelves full of wool, cupboards full of threads and racks full of fabric.
Boxes of buttons. Reels of ribbon. Bobbins and beads. All in all, the room was bright, cheerful, and full of rustic charm.
Doctor Melilot paused in front of a needlework bench and ran his fingers along a grey pinafore dress, cotton shirt and blue jumper. The dress felt
rough and scratchy under his hand. Damp and gritty like sand. Next to these were grey knee–high socks with ragged holes, and a pair of scuffed brown
shoes. 'Clemmie wore these clothes when she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
'Yes. No. It's too early to say. But there is another matter I should explain.' This time, Mr Duck's face turned solemn when he opened a large history
book. The Great Seaboard Wars. Dust flew from its covers, and the parchment crackled when he turned each page.
'Ah yes, The Great Seaboard Wars' saidMiss Prunella, as she looked over his shoulder. 'It began in 1939. There were millions of lives lost when we
fought the six–year war against Mistralia.'
'Very good, m'dear! And who won the war?'
'Well, we did, of course. Gloriana.'
'Well, you can see from this book that our history has changed..' Mr Duck flicked through the pages, then spread the book open across the table. 'Look,
I wanted to show you this. An old newspaper clipping from 6th September 1943.'
Under Attack! ran the headline.
Last night, the great invasion of Gloriana began by air and by sea. Mistralian troops dealt a heavy blow when they carried out beach landings along
the south coast. The battle saw the loss of two million lives. Gloriana fell within 24 hours.
Long live Mistralia!
For the first time in years, Doctor Melilot was at a loss for words.
Befuddled.
Baffled.
Bewildered.
Wake up brain, he urged, as he tried to think through the shock. After all, it was not everyday that history changed right in front of his eyes. 'Well, that
can't be right. We won the war and not the Mistralians.'

Prelude Bellluxe
Prelude– Belleluxe– 1632 I am Rose Marseille. I live in Belleluxe, a tiny city with many rich people within it. One of the rich families is my family,
the Marseille's. There's Mr. Jacob Marseille (father), Mrs. Mary Marseille (Mother); and my siblings, William (15), Daisy (10), Charles (7), May (1),
and Me (13). Along with the arrogant Kellies; Lola and Lela (14), James (27), and John (16). The sweet Scherbaums, and many others. However, there
are unfortunately many poor people too. Such as the gentle Gleasons, the helpful Hennrikus', and the wonderful Wendermans. My friends are Grace
Gleason; Haley (16), Hannah(15), Hattie(14), and Hallie (13) Hennrikus; and Winifred Wenderman. Haley, Hannah, Hattie, and Hallie have a brother
named Henry (14). Winifred has three brothers named Walter (15), Warren (13), and Wilson (10). Chapter One
– Friday Snoring sounds echoed
throughout the room. Rose, the oldest daughter from the Marseille household, fell asleep in her private French class again. "Rose, wake up!"
whispered my sister, Daisy. "Yeah," said Charles, the youngest, and not to mention the smallest child of the five (after the baby). "Young lady, if you
snore any louder, you'll frighten Japan!" Explained Mr. Mazzola, the French teacher. "Je suis dГ©solГ©, Monsieur Mazzola." I said, my cheeks
glowing like the color of a rose, embarrassed. "C'est d'accord, Mademoiselle Rose." Mr. Mazzola replied. Later that day, Daisy and I went to visit Mrs.
Clemons, the head cook. "Hello, Mrs. Clemons!" I exclaimed. "Well, if it isn't the Marseille girls!" she exclaimed. "How are you doing today?" I
asked. "Good, merci!" She replied. "De rien!" I said, a big smile on my face. "Do you have any pastries we could 'taste test'? Daisy asked, the little she–
devil she can be. "Yes, actually. I just took out a fresh tray of Macarons for you two to try!" "Yay!" Daisy yelled! While we were eating the
macarons, Daisy said we have a knitting and sewing class with Madame Cary. Then have a cooking class with Madame Clemons. Then have a reading
and math class with our brothers and Monsieur Scherbaum. Then last, we have an etiquette class with our brothers and Mademoiselle Sherrina. Such a

Mrs Mensah Reported That David
Mrs Mensah reported that David was born premature and spent several months in hospital before being discharged and that during this time she
visited David in hospital every other day. After David had been discharged, Mrs Mensah stated that she played an active part in David's early life,
reporting that when he was six months old, she would often bathe him, feed him, take him to the park and reported introducing him to many of his
favourite toys. Mrs Mensah also reported that she provided regular respite for his mother and also reported that David had no detectable forms of
disability but was known to experience severe asthma like symptoms. Mrs Mensah recalled the day David became very unwell and reported that at
the time, the family lived together in a rented accommodation. Mrs Mensah recalled that she had been at work and was only made aware of the
incident as she approached the property and saw the ambulance. Mrs Mensah reported that she wasn't too concerned as ambulances often visited the
property due to David's breathing, but recognised that something was serious when David had to be resuscitated at the property. Mrs Mensah stated
that she followed the ambulance to St Thomas's Hospital where David was admitted. Mrs Mensah reported that David stayed in St Thomas's Hospital
for several months in a medically induced coma. Mrs Mensah initially reported that she visited David at St Thomas's Hospital on a regular basis but

American Beauty
–From when Carolyn arrives home until the end of the scene with Lester in their living room (Chapter 19: 1:14:35–1:17:40)
The movie "American Beauty" literally is trying to express how much beauty there is in America but it is not always so easy to see. Often in the film
objects normally thought of as ordinary are magnified to express deeper meaning and show what beauty really exists in the world. The color red, for
instance, is an ordinary color but it shows its face numerous times throughout the movie. The color is not just ordinary it is significant, as it represents
love, passion, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In an instant the moment ends when Lester almost ruins her precious couch. Carolyn returns to being uptight and materialistic and Lester to being
angry. He becomes so angry with her because she has let material things be her life. This shows how important love, passion, and happiness in life is,
what it is really about, and how hard it is to maintain all in only a few short minutes. The cinematography in the film does a wonderful job
conveying the genuine meaning behind the sequence as well. The camera is placed far from the actors at the beginning of the scene and becomes
closer and closer as the desire between Lester and Carolyn grows. When Carolyn relapses and becomes upset about the couch almost getting ruined
the camera goes out again and the actors are surrounded by all of the material items in the room. In that frame it is clear that the more intimate, close
up scene was more tasteful to see than the angry room full of expensive furniture. Through this sequence the viewer should be able to understand the
social issue addressed; that today Americans ignore the raw, pure beauty in the world and instead are obsessed with the amount of objects that they can
own. Natural beauty is disappearing, while store bought beauty is growing. In time this will destroy true happiness. The film is touching the viewer's
heart and mise–en–scene and cinematography do a wonderful job at exposing the actuality

Alfred Hitchcock Film Analysis

  • 1. Alfred Hitchcock Film Analysis I've gone on the record as saying I like Alfred Hitchcock's films, though I only really love one so far ("Psycho"). My admiration for Hitchcock, along with the number of his films I love, increased after we watched his beloved "Vertigo" in my class. It may have barely surpassed "Psycho" as my favorite Hitchcock film. This film stars James Stewart as John "Scottie" Ferguson, a San Francisco detective forced to quit the force after a traumatizing event causes him to develop acrophobia. He soon takes up a case as a sort of private eye, however, when an old acquaintance from college asks him to investigate the strange habits of his wife (Kim Novak). Stewart obliges, with dire consequences. One of the surprises in this film, for me, was Stewart as Scottie, who performed excellently. I like Jimmy Stewart, but I've never been as enamored with him as some movie buffs. That has changed some, as I think this is his best performance I've seen. He makes you care for his character and believe his motivations and feelings for the first portion of the movie. He struggles a bit in the emotional scenes, but he still succeeds in evoking our sympathy. By the end of the film, his performance takes a remarkable turn and he becomes genuinely disturbing. It's brilliant. Kim Novak is also great as Madeleine Elster, the wife Stewart's character follows. She has a creepy, disturbing quality about her during that first part of the movie that works quite well. Later, her performance takes a turn, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Silence of the Lambs and Mr. Brooks Essay Unit 2: Week 2– Reader Response – Assignment 1 Juan Luna Park University Serial Killers as Heroes in Popular Culture LE 300J Ms. Silvia Kofler November 2, 2012 Unit 2: Week 2– Reader Response – Assignment 1 A serial killer could be dining, sitting, or even living next to you at this very moment. Most killers offer little to no obvious clues that will lead anyone to detect their often secretive, undercover actions. I ask myself, "How can we be so naive to these types of people?" Serial killers amongst us are often well educated, portray an All–American image, yet have a psychotic side to them. First, most serial killers are often well educated. Hannibal Lecter in the movie "Silence of the Lambs" is a psychologist. Who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "Natural Born Celebrities: Serial Killers in American Culture," serial killers are defined as clean cut, normal, All–American people. Some interviewees shared in chapter five state that the reason why it takes so long for the culprits to be apprehended is attributed to the ability to carry on with a normal life. One even offered that in one instance, his victim actually thought he was joking when he kidnapped her to eventually murder her. In " Mr. Brooks," Earl again is a very successful person. He is an ordinary, suit wearing, clean shaven, clean cut, successful Portland, Oregon businessman. I imagine that his killing addiction would shock even his closest, everyday coworkers. Hannibal Lecter is a former psychiatrist. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of schooling that he endured and numerous certifications, both federal and state, that he must have attained. Yet, he did not like arrogant and obnoxious people, therefore, he murdered them. Despite being well educated and portraying an All–American image, serial killers have a psychotic side to them. Hannibal Lecter showed this side of him when he killed two prison guards. Not only did he murder them but he ate some of their body parts and even carved out the face of one of them to use as a way of disguising himself when he escaped from prison. Earl Brooks murdered in such a cold hearted way. Evidence of this is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Aside from her radical views on health awareness and consistent effort on humanitarian aid, this award–winning actress has stole the love of millions of people every time she goes out with her husband, Brad Pitt, and six loving kids. In 2001, Angelina joined United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after witnessing the difficult life of people in war–torn Cambodia. • 5. Alfred Hitchcock Point Of View Alfred Hitchcock's cinematic style contains an array of stylistic devices, notably the point–of–view shot. Using point of view editing, the audience "repeatedly [sees] events through the eyes of an individual character." (Walker) The audience is privy to only what the character knows and likewise absorbs the character's emotional journey. As the audience's emotional investment/identification with theprotagonist grows, so does the plot amplifying the audience's empathy for the character's heartache, longing, and anxiety, creating the perfect recipe for a suspenseful thriller. Being release in 1997 it is a light–hearted satire of how the more conservative English society reacts to and attempt to adapt to rapidly changing international standards and the shifts in power. The main difference of these two movies is that The Kid aims to bring some cheer to its audiences' hearts by showing how joy can still be found in the gloomiest conditions (as depicted in the daily lives of Charlie and the child he has adopted) and also to reflect the state of the society while Mr. Bean – The Ultimate Disaster Movie seeks to bring some comic relief into the highly stressful lifestyle of the modern–day individual, by actually letting them laugh at a highly exaggerated, and therefore comic, version of 'themselves'. As mentioned earlier, the era in which Charlie Chaplin's The Kid was made did not allow for colour or sound to be incorporated into its production. Being disadvantaged in this area, the actors in the film had to make up for it by emphasizing on facial expressions and body movements, in order to express thoughts and emotions, and also to portray certain unique mannerisms and character traits of the various characters in the story. Modern–day audiences who are unaccustomed to this form of acting might feel uncomfortable viewing films from the silent era, because the actors may seem to them, to be over–acting to an outrageous

Vertigo Vertigo– Hitchcock Defying Genre "...alternatively, a film can revise or reject the conventions associated with its genre" – Bordwell Based on the French novel D'Entre les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, Vertigo is arguably one of Alfred Hitchcock's masterpieces and the "strangest, yet most hauntingly beautiful film he had ever made" (Adair, 2002). At the time, its far–fetched plot drew a mixed response from critics – Time magazine called the movie a "Hitchcock and bull story" – but today most agree that it is one of the director's most deeply felt pictures. As the bathroom door opens, he turns to his left, and we only see his left profile (Fig 1.), a mirror image to the first time he set eyes on Madeleine in the restaurant – unsure, and this time, full of anticipation. We are reminded of the green motif, by the neon light outside Judy's apartment. As Scottie turns around to fully see the resurrected Madeleine, he slowly stands up and at this point the music starts to pick up, leading us to the point at which he sees his beloved. The camera tracks into a close up of Scottie's face, with the green light reflecting off his eye, he almost looks like he has tears in his eyes (Fig 2.). Cut to Judy/ Madeleine stepping out of the toilet, it is Scottie's POV of Madeleine bathed in ghostly green light. Similar to the scene in the cemetery where Madeleine was shot through a fog filter, which gave her the green glow, Judy/ Madeleine now had green light superimposed around her body, which gave her the appearance of a blurred, ghostly figure (Fig 3.). This reflected Madeleine coming back from the dead, now a ghost, as green is usually used to represent ghost or spirits in film. She then slips out of the blur and into focus, Hitchcock used this to indicate Scottie's come back to reality, coming to his senses as he spots the locket in the next scene, realizing that Judy has been tricking him all along (Truffaut, 1985). ... Personal Narrative- Christmas Cookies Essay Personal Narrative– Christmas Cookies Although I have grown up to be entirely inept at the art of cooking, as to make even the most wretched chef ridicule my sad baking attempts, my childhood would have indicated otherwise; I was always on the countertop next to my mother's cooking bowl, adding and mixing ingredients that would doubtlessly create a delicious food. When I was younger, cooking came intrinsically with the holiday season, which made that time of year the prime occasion for me to unite with ounces and ounces of satin dark chocolate, various other messy and gooey ingredients, numerous cooking utensils, and the assistance of my mother to cook what would soon be an edible masterpiece. Once my mother finished with the "I told you so's" concerning the unsweetened chocolate, I was able to mold the dough into cookies and roll it through a flurry of powdered sugar. This was probably my favorite part, because I could get creative with the shapes of the cookies, snowmen being my favorite. Theme Of Vertigo By Paul Austers Mr Vertigo To fight through downfall "I was twelve years old the first time I walked on water" is the first line in Paul Austers Mr. Vertigo, a book about a child's dream and the journey to reach them. The book takes place in America at 1927 where a young boy named Walt is approached by a strange man, called Master Yehudi and is offered a chance in a lifetime, the ability to fly. As he goes with him he chooses a difficult path that will bring both wonders and despair. This is a book telling about a boys big ambition to overcome all hardship that lives throws in his way. The ability to overcome hardship can be seen through the protagonist personality, his ambition to reach greatness. He was a nobody, a nothing, so when he is offered the chance to achieve something greater he takes it. "Not like a bird, my little man. Like a god. You'd be the wonder of wonders, Walt, the holy of holies. As long as men walked the earth, they'd worship you as the greatest among them." (Auster 74). She can't understand why Helen would bear the pain and not rebel. Jane's rebellious nature can be seen in this passage. She has a hostility towards violent authority. The social/economic upper–class in England in Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray are depicted through the characters' lifestyles, wealth, and behaviors. Woolf, Austen, and Wilde give insightful portrayals of the characters by emphasizing their social roles in the England society. Their portrayals of the characters suggest that they are critical of the upper–class' factitious lifestyles. Members of England's social/economic upper–class in Woolf's, Austen's, and Wilde's literary works are distinguished by their lifestyles. When Austen says that Lady Middleton "had the advantage of being able to spoil her children all the year round" (Austen 25), she suggests that the upper–class live a luxurious lifestyle because they are able to indulge in whatever their heart desires. In Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, he describes the lives of the upper–class by detailing their pleasurable lifestyle. Much like the upper–class' lifestyle in Mrs. Dalloway and Sense and Sensibility, their lifestyle include attending social gatherings and upholding their outer appearances in high esteem. Wilde notes that the upper–class like to associate themselves with people of the same social importance. • 13. The Theme of Mental Health Illustrated in Woolf's Mrs.... 'Mrs. Dalloway', by Virginia Woolf is a derivative text of 'The Hours', written by Michael Cunningham. The novels both share an important theme of mental health. The circumstances of mental health are commonly sympathetic, and empathetic. The characters Septimus and Clarissa in 'Mrs. Dalloway' and Richard, Laura Brown, and Virginia Woolfin 'The Hours' show the strongest symbols for this theme. Most of the problems and treatments these characters face are in direct result of the age they live in. Both novels express a relationship between era, illnesses and treatments. The clearest illness was that of Septimus, in 'Mrs. Dalloway'. Septimus suffered from shell–shock, a result of the First World War. This illness in turn brought about an ... (Page 110). Woolf's own experiences could be reflected off of those of Bradshaw's thoughts. Woolf portrays doctors to be useless. The delusions of Septimus are shown through Woolf's characteristic stream of consciousness style. 'Once you fall, Septimus repeated to himself, human nature is on you. Holmes and Bradshaw are on you. They scour the desert. They fly screaming into the wilderness. The rack and the thumbscrew are applied. Human nature is remorseless.' (Page 108). Through this quote, the reader is able to see the way in which Septimus' thoughts are portrayed. The thoughts of Septimus show him to be a helpless victim. When understanding the way Septimus is being treated by the doctor, the reader can not help but feel sympathy for him. Woolf's use of stream of consciousness is that of cautiousness and delicacy. With the novel's structure, the narrator possesses the ability to move inside of a character's mind and compose her thoughts and emotions immediately as events occur throughout the day. The novel's main character, Clarissa, is a middle–aged woman who belongs to the upper–middle class in society and is well–married to a Member of Parliament–Richard Dalloway. Rather than hold lengthy conversations between characters, she frequently writes only of small talk and leaves more serious topics to be recited in an individual's exclusive thoughts. One of her purposes in writing the novel is to expose the hypocrisy of society. The characters in the novel range from eccentric acquaintances to extravagant lords and ladies to vindictive tutors to suicidal veterans. One example of this theme occurs when Rezia and Septimus attempt to settle down in the park. When the airplane soars overhead, she writes, "Tears ran down his cheeks (Woolf 21)." While one may mistake this as joy or, at worst, sorrow over the recent war, Woolf gives the reality of the action beneath the surface, stating, "They are signaling to me... this exquisite beauty... but he would not go mad. He would see no more (21)." While Septimus dwindles on the brink of insanity, Rezia chatters away about nature, unaware of the mess resting beside her. Septimus portrays the appearance of one man yet expresses an entirely new persona through his contemplations. Another instance of the theme transpires when Miss Kilman and Clarissa wait for Elizabeth to retrieve her gloves before going shopping. Clarissa and Kilman both make attempts at small talk. Mrs. Robinson knows how to control him so that he does take part in this affair because at the moment all she wants is him. • 23. The Silance Of Music In Alfred Hitchcock's Vrtigo Vertigo is a 1958 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. The film follows the acrophobic, retired San Francisco detective, John 'Scottie' Ferguson (Stewart) who is hired to trail his friend's wife, Madeleine (Novak), but falls in love with her in the process. When Madeleine dies in what is deemed a suicide, John becomes depressed and begins to obsess over Judy (Novak), who looks exactly like the Madeleine he knew. After changing Judy's appearance to be a doppelganger of Madeleine, John comes to find out that he had actually fallen in love with Judy pretending to be Madeleine, because she was part of a plot to murder the real Madeleine. One aspect of the film that is interesting is the way the balance of music and dialogue add to the suspense of the story. As stated in James Berardinelli's review of Vertigo, "There are numerous, lengthy passages that pass without dialogue (most of these occur while John is trailing Madeleine), and Herrmann's music sustains Hitchcock's carefully–crafted tone." As well as to create these interesting scenes that rely almost entirely on visuals to tell the story, the music has an important role of building the feeling of suspense, complete with the typical thriller crescendos used to foreshadow a big event. This film has many technical aspects that help it stand apart from others and the musical choices made are a clear example of this. Another aspect of this film that is fantastic is the ... Woolfe comments heavily on English society more through her description of her characters, and the weaving of time and place is an effective way to telling the stories of her characters as we follow them through a single day. This parallels the narrative structure of the novel as being circular, discontinuous and digressive. The same can easily be said for Mrs Dalloway as the novel almost jarringly weaves through many points of view. This fragmentation appropriates the concept of history in "Midnight's Children", which was developed by colonizers. History works for a particular class of ideology, and therefore it will be contaminated, oblique and subjective. In Mrs. Dalloway the characters themselves are subjective commentaries on English society, and they have been subjectively contaminated by Woolfe's opinions of who they represent. The functionality of history is grounded in the simple assumption that life is shaped like a story. Whereas Woolfe admittedly wrote in an experimental style that was more of a slice of life than a traditionally shaped story with a beginning, middle, and end. For Saleem, who is "buffeted by too much history", it is his memory which creates his own history. The same is true of everyone in "Mrs. Dalloway". "Memory, as well as fruit, is being saved from the corruption of the clocks". This quote could have easily been in Mrs. Dalloway, particularly when Clarissa reacted to the suicide of Septimus and seemed to fear the aging brought on by ticking clocks. Conversely, my second and current Director is a democratic leader who "delegates authority to others, encourages participation, relies on subordinates' knowledge for completion of tasks, and depends on subordinates respect for influence" (Daft, 2015). These two leadership styles are completely opposite, but leadership is needed in organizations. "Leadership is the heart and soul of an organization. Leadership is the ability to inspire ... Since I could not talk to my Director I sought out other managers within the organization to mentor me and help fulfill the expectations that I had for a supervisor. The stressful environment that I worked in made it hard for me to grow professionally. I also had very little motivation to work hard for someone who never acknowledged any of my achievements. Her type of leadership made me work just hard enough to avoid receiving an email from her detailing what I had done incorrectly. Due to her lack of management, there was no trust between us because I did not respect her as a superior. I completed exactly what was required and nothing more because the motivation was not there for me to give that extra effort. She also routinely criticized subordinates in front of others causing "humiliation, offence and distress, and which may interfere with job performance and/or cause an unpleasant working environment" (Cooper, 2010). Due to her treatment of myself and my peers none of us were willing to go above and beyond what was asked of us. It was tough to know what was expected of us because we never had team meetings or one–on–one meetings to outline expectations or to review past performance. This public criticism was embarrassing for those who had to endure it and instilled fear in those who witnessed it. After working at the company ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Christmas Eve Christmas is magical in the eyes of a child. At least, that's how it was for me. Every year, as the month of December rolled around, the lights were strung and the trees were set up, I sent my letter out with a hopeful heart that Santa would make an appearance on my doorstep on Christmas Eve. The December of 2008 was the year that I wished for an electric scooter. I mailed my wish list to Santa, knowing he would prevail and deliver that Razor electric scooter with a hand brake and fat tires. Christmas morning was perfect! Santa had brought me a plum colored, shiny, and fully charged electric scooter and my younger sister, Olivia, a hot pink one. They were perched on their small silver kickstands in front of our eight foot tree that was weighed down with years worth of homemade and souvenir ornaments. The scooters were free of a box or wrapping, just how Santa always brought the gifts. As soon as the all of the presents were ripped open and breakfast eaten, I pranced outside to test out my new ride. It was a crisp, wintry morning with gray skies. I cruised back and forth on the scooter in front of my house for hours, accelerating on the uphills and coasting on the downhills with the cold wind blowing through my tangled hair and my nose turning pink from the low temperatures. It was my absolute favorite present. Fast forward a few days, the Saturday following Christmas, and I was hiking up the red clay hill that began to incline as soon as you stepped off of our back ... • 27. Themes In Vertigo Vertigo is a 1958 American Psychological thriller film directed by one of the best director of all times, Alfred Hitchcock. The movie shows many contexts like fear, obsession and fantasy. The movie starts when John (Scottie) Ferguson (James Stewart) a detective retires from his job when his fellow officer loses his life falling from the height. In this moment, he accidentally gains acrophobia (fear of height). His friend Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore) wants him to tail and follow Madeleine (Kim Novak) who is acting weird and strange recently. Scottie blames himself and feels guilty when he can't save Madeleine from jumping off the tower. The film throughout the time shows the different contexts to relate the theme of obsession and sexual fantasy. The film is one of the top example in use of camera, cinematography, score and direction. The movie successfully portrays how love turns into obsession, how fear leads these characters into different madness, by the perfect use of color, cinematography and use of characters. Color is one of the essential part of the movie. The use of color can determine various emotions in the film. It can add richness to any scene. The use of white has always shown to describe the peace and purity, whereas the red describes rage, anger and bad. Black is color of mystery usually used to show the darkness, evilness of a scene. Hitchcock is a big fan of use of color, he has perfectly used the colors to demonstrate the characters build up and add the depth to it. Scottie sees Madeleine for the first time in the restaurant wearing a dark green color dress which makes her focus among the other people. Scottie starts feeling something her, next day again when he follows her, Madeleine drives green car which again tries to state that she is the main focus. The use of alternative colors in the movie depicts how the characters are build up to the story, red is shown as the Scottie's obsession, fantasy and love whereas green to create this uncanniness, and unrealism and yellow as a reality, and truth of the matter. In the next scene, Madeline drives to Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco which is red. She was again showed in a green dress, which matches the sea color green. She jumps into the sea ... Adaptations of Virginia Wolfe Essay In approaching a topic such as adaptations, one has to first understand what exactly adaptation means and how it is applied to such works to get the product the "adapter" is trying to create and for what reasons they are "adapting" for. The American Heritage Dictionary defines Adaptation as the following: "1(a). The act for process of adapting. 1(b). The state of being adapted. 2. A composition recast into a new form: "The play is an adaptation of a short novel." 3. Woolf takes the reader on a psychological roller coaster with flashbacks to Mrs. Dalloway's' life, specifically her teen–age to college years. She shows us all of the decisions Dalloway had to make and how those decisions had shaped her life. Clarissa Dalloway had chosen a life that would be safe for her, by marrying well and having a child, by living the proper political life. Throughout the novel, Clarissa thinks back onto how she could have had a life of sexual freedom and excitement with Richard, her ex–lover from her college years. Of course this is all put into play by the arrival of him from India, because she hadn't seen him in a very long time. All of these occurrences and flashbacks just add to Clarissa's growing–depression that she barely is able to hold onto in the story. The most interesting and most significant aspect of Mrs. Dalloway is that it takes place in one day, which is what Cunningham and Daldry built their book and movie off of. The idea of telling a story of a woman's thoughts in one day is an amazing one because it is so intrinsic and specific that going past one day would take forever to divulge and digest. One of the most important parts of Mrs. Dalloway is the relationship between Septimus and Clarissa. Woolf uses Septimus, a war veteran who's got shell shock, as the alternate persona to Clarissa. However, mid–way through the film Thornhill's quandary is further complicated by the introduction of Eve Kendall, a beautiful yet mysterious woman he encounters on a train during his escape from the authorities and people trying to kill him. The use of the close shot provides a better, more intimate view of their expressions as they banter back and forth and the sexual innuendos ramp up. Thornhill's thoughts are particularly evident across his face as he changes from showing interest in the attractive woman across from him, to tension at being recognized by her, to unabashed glee at the prospect of sleeping with same said beautiful woman, and finally to alarm as he learns police are boarding the train. In contrast to Thornhill's expressive looks, Hitchcock shows Eve's as being more controlled and understated. Throughout her linguistic dance with Thornhill, Eve manages to maintain an air of surety about herself, revealing only those pieces of information that she wants him to know. She manages to exude a sense of cool certainty and control during arguably the most sexually suggestive moment of the film: in the only profile shot of the scene, the camera shows Eve as she slowly blows out the flame on the match Thornhill uses to light her cigarette, clasping his hand as she does so. • 38. The Great Divide By John Woolf And Forster 's ' Howard 's... Nashandra M. Jolley ENG 4425 Ross 11 November, 2015 The Great Divide There were several prevailing thoughts towards connections present during the time in England on the cusp of High Modernism. The importance of connections with others was one that was specifically addressed in much of the literature. E.M. Forster even highlighted the idea in his novel "Howard's End" with the epigraph "only connect". The idea supports the notion that, in order for a society to survive and thrive, some degree of connection must be adequately maintained. Yet, through the stratification ofsocial classes in England at the time, there was little social connection being preserved. To address the issue, authors likeVirginia Woolfand Forster included connection as a prominent theme in their works. Both Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" and Forster's "Howard's End" address connection through their characters as well as geographical locations. In each of these stories, the underlying theme of connecting highlights the characters' struggles to "only connect". It would seem as if Forster is urging connection by illustrating that, without some degree of connecting, social classes would remain stratified and society would fall into utter ruin. Through the intermingling of characters in "Howard's End", Forster suggests that connecting in such a way is progress. He further advocates and suggests that progress should be presented as a positive thing, and, in order for a society to flourish, connections between the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The cinematography in the film does a wonderful job conveying the genuine meaning behind the sequence as well. The camera is placed far from the actors at the beginning of the scene and becomes closer and closer as the desire between Lester and Carolyn grows.
