2. Summary of STIs

3. Chancroid • treatable STD, bacterial infection that causes
painful sores.
Chlamydia • treatable STD, bacterial infection of the prostate,
urethra & female pelvis.
Crabs (Lice) • treatable STD, parasites or bugs that live on the
pubic hair in the genital area.
Gonorrhea • treatable STD, bacterial infection of the penis,
vagina or anus, aka "the clap"
Hepatitis • five types; A & E are self-limiting; B, C, & D are
cureless; B is preventable with a vaccine
Herpes • treatable but often recurrent STD, viral infection
causing blisters (anus, vagina, penis).
HIV / AIDS • cureless STD, viral infection of the immune
system (no cure fo this STD)

4. HPV / • cureless STD, viral infection of the skin in the
Warts genital area & female's cervix.
Scabies • treatable STD, mite parasites that burrows under
the skin and lays eggs
Syphilis • treatable STD, bacterial infection affecting genitals,
heart, & nerves.
Tricho- • treatable STD, protozoan parasite infection of male
moniasis urethra & female pelvis.
Yeast • treatable fungal infection of the vagina
Infection
Vaginosis • treatable vaginal infection causing itch, burning,
discharge & an odd odor
Yeast in • treatable fungal infection of the tip of the penis,
Men called balanitis

5. Summary Treatment

6. Genital Herpes: 200-400mg three
times/day for 10 days
Herpes prophylaxis: 200- 400mg twice
a day
Herpes zoster (shingles): 800mg 5
times/day for 10 days

7. New once-daily Cipro XR®
Gonorrhea: 500mg or 1000mg (>200lb
weight) one single dose
Symptomatic Gonorrhea: 500mg once
a day / 3 days
Chancroid: 500mg once a day / 3 days

8. Single dose Diflucan®
Diflucan® (fluconazole) is used to treat
vaginal yeast infections (curdy-white
discharge).
Vaginal yeast infection: Diflucan
150mg one single dose.

9. Doxycycline Hyclate (Vibramycin® or
Vibra-Tabs®)
Chlamydia: twice a day / 10 days
LGV: twice a day / 21 days
Syphilis: twice a day / 14 days

10. Levaquin is no longer recommended
treatment for STDs such as Gonorrhea
and Chlamydia
Use recommended Cipro XR and
Doxycycline to treat Gonorrhea and
Chlamydia, respectively.

11. Metronidazole - Generic Flagyl®
Trichomoniasis (both male & female):
500mg twice a day for 7-10 days
Bacterial Vaginosis (vaginal fishy odor
& gray discharge): 500mg twice a day for
7 days

Genital Herpes Suppression: 500mg
once a day - long term
Herpes Initial Episode: 500mg twice a
day for 7 days

Chlamydia treatment:
- 4 tabs (1.0 gm) as a single dose
regimen; or
- 2 tabs (500mg) as first dose on day 1,
followed by 1 tab (250mg) once a day for

as Zithromax Z-pak®)
