Madagascar Creatures

Where is Madagascar? Madagascar is an Island in the Indian Ocean off the coast
of Africa. Madagascar is home to some animals that have never been seen any where else
in the world. It is safe to use the words creatures, and animals interchangeably given the
size and characteristics of these animals. Madagascar is also known for unusual insects.
One of the oldest living creatures or insects on earth or in any part of the world is the
cockroach as annoying as they are they go back to pre-historic days. Madagascar is home
to the hissing cockroach they actually hiss. New York City’s Museum of Natural History
has a display of live Madagascar roaches that can be touched and held, very creepy.
These cockroaches are shiny brown and oval-shaped and they are wingless with a single
pair of antennae. The males have horns and that gives them an unusual look. It is not
unusual for a male Madagascar to use his horns to battle. You wouldn’t think of a small
Madagascar cockroach battling with a horned or antler mammal like a ram. During the
fight the roaches unleash their hissing sound and win the battle against honed or antler
animals. One rival of the Madagascar cockroach is the ram I still can’t imagine this
cockroach in a battle with such a large animal and winning. The animals of Madagascar
are very unusual animals and many of them can’t be found any place else in the world
as mentioned previously. The pill Millipede are common in the forests of Madagascar.
The pill millipede has two pair of legs for each one there are 20 to 100 or more body
characteristics. They are herbivorous, eating decaying leaves and other dead plant
matter. The comet moth is also known as the (Madagascan moon moth) it is known for
its huge tail which is 8 inches (20cm) in length.
The Aye-Aye looks like a very unusual rodent with bat ears and rat teeth. This
lemur is a nocturnal animal that lives in the rainforest. The Aye-Aye feeds on insect
larvae, he uses his long bony middle finger to bang on the bark of trees while the Aye-
Aye is banging, this creature is also listening for insect sounds and their presence. When
he hears the sound of an insect the Aye-Aye gnaws at the wood to eat them.
The Bamboo Lemur was discovered (by Western Science) large mammal species
is the golden bamboo, lemur (Hapalemur aureus), was found on an expedition during a
search for the greater Lemur (H Simus), it was believed that this Lemur was extinct but
during the expedition they found a Bamboo eating Lemur that had not been previously
described. The Bamboo eating Lemur had reddish gold fur and was later named the
golden bamboo lemur. This bamboo lemur lives in the rainforest of Madagascar also.
The third bamboo eating lemur is a gentle bamboo lemur (H griseus) these species
have interesting feeding habits. The golden bamboo lemur eats high levels of
cyanide imagine that cyanide a poison. The golden haired lemur eats the cyanide
containing leaf bases. The amount of cyanide consumed by this creature is
enough to kill three men.
Madagascar is home to about 150 species of Chameleons. Chameleons are
small to mid-size reptiles and they are most famous and known as reptiles that
change colors.Their color change is to convey emotions, defend territories, and
communication with mates. People believe that they change colors to match their
environment this is not true. Madagascar is thought to have more than 300
species of frogs. Frogs are the only amphibians that are found in Madagascar
there are no toads, salamanders or newts. The Mantella frog is strikingly
beautiful they look similar to the poisonous dart frog of South America. They both
use their bright colors to show their toxic skin secretions to predators. The
Tomato frog releases sticky glue- like protection that protects them from colubrid
snakes, cats and dogs. The secretion can cause an allergic reaction in humans.

Summary
Madagascar is an Island that is in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa.
Madagascar is home to the most unusual animals or creatures in the world.
Many of these animals have never been seen any where else except for
Madagascar. For this reason the existence and survival of theses animals are
possible because the environment is not polluted with Industrial plants or
destruction of rain forests by humans. These animals are allowed to exist in a
chemical free environment.
