Co-evolution and
Symbiosis
By: Kenzie Martin
Co-evolution
 --Organisms that have changed over time and have become so adapted to
each other that they can no longer survive without each other.
 An example of co-evolution is when flowers compete for pollinators. The
plants that produce flowers (with colors, shapes and scents specific to
particular pollinators) that attract the most effective pollinators will set the
most seed and have the most offspring.
Co-evolution to Symbiosis
 Symbiosis– a close relationship between two species.
 Organisms that experience co-evolution, must experience symbiosis.
 There are four types of symbiosis:
 Mutualism
 Parasitism
 Commensalism
 Predation
Mutualism
 --the way two organisms interact where they both benefit from the
relationship
 An example of mutualism is the relationship between the sea anemones and
anemone fish. The sea anemones offer the fish protection from predators and
in return the anemone fish protect the sea anemones from butterfly fish.
Parasitism
 --the relationship between organism of different species where one organism,
the parasite, benefits and one organism is harmed
 An example of parasitism is when a tick feeds off the blood of a dog. This is
hurting the dog but the tick is gaining nutrients.
Commensalism
 --the relationship between organisms of different species where one benefits
and the other organism is not harmed or receives any benefit
 An example of commensalism is when a bird makes its home in a hole in a
tree. Birds do not attack the tree, nor do they ward off animals that would
eat parts of the tree, so the tree is neither helped nor harmed.
Predation
 --the relationship where there is a predator and a prey
 And example of predation is wolves hunting moose, owls hunting mice, or
shrews hunting worms and insects.

Quiz: take this short quiz to test your knowledge on todays lesson
 1. in your own words, describe Coevolution.
 2. in your own words describe symbiosis
 3. what are the four types of symbiosis
 4. Match
 1. Commensalism
 2. Predation
 3. Parasitism
 4. Mutualism
 And
 A. the way two organisms interact where they both benefit from the relationship
 B. the relationship between organism of different species where one organism, the
parasite, benefits and one organism is harmed
 C. the relationship between organisms of different species where one benefits and
the other organism is not harmed or receives any benefit
 D. the relationship where there is a predator and a prey
All done…
 I hope that gained knowledge and recourses from this lesson and that you
expanded your thoughts on coevolution and symbiosis.
