1. More than half of the world’s mountain gorillas
live in the Virunga Mountains on the border of
Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and
Uganda. The rest live in the Bwindi Impenetrable
National Park in Uganda. There are only 880 left.
Gorilla in danger
There are two different gorilla species. The
Western and the Eastern Gorilla. Both live in
central and western Africa. They live for 30
to 50 years. The males grow to 165-175 cm
tall, and females to about 140 cm.
Gorillas eat a lot of
leaves, shoots, some
fruit and some grubs,
caterpillars, snails,
termites and ants.
Female gorillas
usually have one
baby every four
to six years. They
stay pregnant for
nine months like
humans. Their
babies weigh less
than humans but
they develop twice
as fast.
Gorillas can use tools,
like humans, like sticks
to test the depth of
water and to cross
swampy areas.
The biggest threats to
Gorrillas are poaching,
diseases such as Ebola,
and the destruction of
their forests.
Gorillas have a language
which they teach their
young to survive, or
search for food this way.
They can also learn basic
human sign language and
show emotions
