the Ultimate
Online
Presentation Video
Kelly Soczka Steidinger
2. Tip #1
Control the
Visual
Environment
Tips for Success….
• Review what will be in the background
of your video. Try to remove any
distracting objects, posters, clutter, etc. to
keep your audience’s attention.
• Pay attention to lighting. You don’t want
it to be so dark that you are hard to see or
too bright that it washes you out.
3. Avoid These Past Student
Mistakes…
• Cats & dogs like to be the
center of attention; they will
interrupt you.
• Leaving the Packer game on
the t.v. directly behind the
speaker with the audio
muted. Ouch!
• A male audience member
without a shirt on.Yikes!
• Beer cans…Need I say more?
4. Tip #2
Control the
Audio
Environment
Tips for Success…
• Find a quiet location for both your
audience and yourself to record your
speech.
• Do a practice run. Review the
recording to see how well your device
picks up the volume of your voice. Do
you need to move closer to the
camera?
5. Avoid These Past
Student Mistakes…
• Recording your video while standing near a
running washer/dryer.
• Recording your video at a restaurant or bar.
• Recording your video while someone else
vacuums the floor or mows the lawn nearby.
• Not replacing the batteries in your smoke
alarm. Beep!
• After panning the audience with the
recording device, the speaker dismisses
them. The audience then plays a loud game
of pool in the background! Really?Yep.
6. Tip #3
Get up, Stand Up!
• Make every attempt possible to record
your speech while standing! Speakers stand
in front of audiences when giving speeches.
It demonstrates confidence!
• Standing allows you to use hand gestures,
appropriate body movements, and will
improve your ability to breath efficiently.
• Your body will take in more oxygen when
standing, which will lower your speech
anxiety.
7. Tip #4
Dress for Success!
• If you look good, you feel good!
• If you feel good, you can
demonstrate your confidence!
• Dress a half step above what you
would normally wear in a classroom
setting.
• No pajama pants please! NoTuxedos Needed!
8. Tip #5
Use Notes Cards or
PPT to speak
Extemporaneously
• Use a brief set of notes to avoid
reading your speech word-for-
word.
• Practice several times, so that
you know, roughly, what you are
going to say next during your
speech.
9. Avoid These Past
Student Mistakes…
• Reading the speech word-for-
word off of a computer screen
that is just off camera.
• Sitting directly in front of a laptop
and reading your speech word-
for-word off of the computer
screen.
10. Tip #6
Visual Aids
• Record the speaker with your
video device, not the power
point. Your instructor will have a
copy of your slides to review and
needs to see your delivery
performance. Instead, make sure
your audience can see your
visual aids, versus the camera.
