The Importance Of Arts In Education
Some schools in the United States offer a variety of arts programs, while other schools may have
mediocre to non–existent arts programs. Students in their early years of schooling from elementary
to high school depending on whether he or she has an arts education can affect them in the long run.
Art programs since the 1980s have integrated into public education, however the No Child Left
Behind act has since put the arts in the decline. According to Americans, 93% of them agree the arts
are vital to providing a well–rounded education for children and 86% agree that arts education
encourages and assists in the improvement of a child 's attitude toward school. The National
Education Association believes the arts play an important role in ... Show more content on

Under the No Child Left Behind Act, passed in 2002, the federal government started assessing
school districts by their students' scores on reading and mathematics tests. Due to having reading
and mathematics as the core way of assessing how much a school does and how much it receives in
federal funding, schools focus more on reading and math over anything else including art. Deep
budget cuts on the art education at the benefit of mathematics and reading has long–lasting effects
on schools that do so. According to National Endowment for the Arts 2015 Annual Report, many
state and local organizations depend on federal funding to sustain accessible arts programs
throughout the country. With funding being limited, art has to be reduced as it 's deemed
unimportant. Furthermore a study titled "The Role of the Fine and Performing Arts in High School
Dropout Prevention," by the Center for Music Research at Florida State University, "Students at risk
of not successfully completing their high school educations cite their participation in the arts as
reasons for staying in school. Factors related to the arts that positively affected the motivation

The Importance Of The Arts In Education
As our education budget continues to diminish, our art programs have received the brunt of the
cutbacks. In such schools, the arts exist in unappreciative, and even hostile environments. We
should be fighting to keep art programs in the education system because they have been an essential
part of American culture, they illuminate truths perceptually and more immediate than the spoken
word, and they offer an indispensable educational dimension to our students.
Throughout American history, artistic representations have portrayed a message of religion, racial,
gender, political, class, and many other perspectives through the artist's eyes. Today, the arts serve as
historical documents to help people better understand the world and our history. An example of such
a time is when the artist David Gilmour Blythe helped bring the sheer brutality of the Civil War into
the light. Blythe's Lincoln Crushing the Dragon of Rebellion (1862) incorporated images that helped
people visually relate to what was happening in the war. The dragon represents the rebellion of the
Confederate States, as suggested by the painting's title. The pillars having been destroyed by the
dragon alludes to the rebellion destroying the foundation and support of our nation. As Lincoln
poses to strike the dragon, you can see he is chained to a stump labeled "constitution" and
"democracy." The chains handicapping Lincoln appear to be a critique of the constraints of the
democratic process and the limits to

The Importance Of Art Education
When I first started my art class I could not find a reason to get excited about it and I was not very
confident about my art skills, so I wasn't sure what I would get out of the class. As the class
progressed I realized it wasn't all about drawing and creating art project but also about the
importance of the History of Art being taught in the classroom no matter what cultural or economic
backgrounds the students come from. When one refers to Art education they are referring to
education in the disciplines of music, dance, theater, and visual arts. Visual art was the arts our class
focused on which refers to drawing, painting, sculptures, printmaking, crafts, photography, and
filmmaking to name a few. Art can be very beneficial to all students from K–12th rather they are in
a regular education class or a special education classroom. The good thing about art is it allows
students to create things at their own developmental stage. It is critical for every student to be
exposed to the benefits of integrating art into the academic curriculum. The teacher can add art to a
science lesson and it would bring learning about blood cells to a different level. Instead of just
reading about what a cell is they can draw it, or color code it by the different parts of the cell giving
them a more in–depth understanding to how the different parts of the cell work. There is a lot of
learning that takes place in the classroom but we must include the art so that all children will have

Art Based Education
William Bennet, the former US Secretary of Education, claims "The arts are an essential element of
education . . . music, dance, painting . . . are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and
accomplishment" (ilmea.org, 2016, para 11). The arts are a crucial component to the success of
students overall experience in the academic setting. Students exposed in the arts throughout their
educational experience endure more benefits then those who go throughout school with no exposure
to them. Schools must require creative art programs in the K–12 curricula, because of the academic,
emotional, and social benefits for students.

Academic. The most important aspect of school is the academics. What if the arts contributed to the
academic benefits that students experienced? Arsenault (2009) describes how creative art programs
can work alongside school subjects and help benefit the students to prosper through their studies.
Research also shows that an art based learning achieve higher scores on academic tests (Miller, &

throughout their school curricula demonstrate better academic success in all their subjects. Higher

stay in school and learn how to take risks they wouldn't normally take in the classroom (Ruppert,

Art Education : The Importance Of The Arts And Education
The arts have a long and storied past in the United States. Through the years the arts have ranged
from a luxury to a staple, rising and falling in interest and availability based on public opinion
(Heilig, Cole, & Aguilar, 2010). Despite the rocky road the arts have faced, they never disappear
completely. Art supporters hope to one day see a society that values the arts, and for the need to arts
advocacy to vanish.
Art education has many intangible benefits. Through the arts students learn how to express their
thoughts and feelings about their personal and community identity. Students are encouraged to
utilize creative problem solving though the design and implementation of new ideas. Students learn
perseverance and mental fortitude through reflection and critique (Ulbricht, 2002). While art
advocates understand these intangibles, the general public often needs to see tangible outcomes.
Studying the transfer of learning in the arts, is often not well received by art purists who believe the
value of art education can and should be found in itself. Still other art advocates have found that the
study of transfer has aided in gaining public support and garnering significant resources. Thus,
transfer in the arts is a high interest and often heated topic. The intricate relationship between the
arts and student learning has proven to be ripe with research but in demand of more (Catterall,
2002).

The Benefits Of Arts Education In Schools
Living in the twenty–first century, everywhere and everything is influenced by art. From local
advertisement posters to world–wide famous sculptures, art is always playing a role. Unfortunately,
art education fundings for schools have recently dropped by 50–70% (D'Amico). Because of this
decrease, it could be detrimental to students by stripping them of their knowledge on arts. In
schools, art has a huge part in giving students all their needs in order to succeed in their future lives.
Arts education benefits students by three major ways: teaching good habits and skills, promoting
knowledge on human creativity, and letting them express themselves through their artwork. Not
only that, but students overall tend to do better on their schoolwork while being involved in arts
education. Art is very broad when it comes to it's many forms, including: art literature, photography,
music, dance, painting, and sculpting. Considering all, think about the different things that students
can pick up from each category. From a single art class, students have the opportunity to learn a
variety of superior habits and skills that could be very essential to their future selves. In a 2014
article, it informs that most arts "require concentration, patience, and perseverance and as such there
is a real sense of accomplishment that accompanies completing activity as a child has worked on,"
("The Benefits of Arts"). Each of these skills and habits could be highly useful for any career choice

The Importance Of Art In Education
Art has existed for many centuries, longer than human civilisation. The earliest settlers who were
the Indigenous people, had art as part of their cultural practices and identities. It was also used as a
communication tool for emotions and conflicts situations (Nathan, 2008). They also used art to mark
seasons and time, and to record historical events. In addition, as art can be any form, song and dance
were seen as an art that were used to welcome or accept death and birth of humans. Theatre is also a
form of art to propose solutions to life's dilemmas such as Shakespeare's plays. Also paintings of
great nobles, heroes and villains were displayed and passed onto next generations. Hence, (Ewing
2010, p.1) asserts that language alone would not have been able to communicate the important
moments of our time. Therefore, art has a significant existence in our everyday lives. And with
education that plays an important tool in everyone lives, art will play an important role in order to
enhance and support education. The arts strands identify the skills, knowledge, and understandings
that students develop through learning in the arts. Benefits of learning creative arts give the children
opportunity to explore, express their own ideas, understand and have the confident about their
creativity, feelings and getting ideas from others. (Sinclair, C Jeannert, N. & O'Toole J 2012, p.17).

Arts And Education : The Importance Of Arts Education
Outline Plain, repetitive academic classes can definitely become old and dull–especially when it
could be all that's happening daily. Students become bored and dissatisfied with this lifestyle, but
the integration of arts can cause various changes in a student's life. The arts in classroom curriculum
open up a diversity of things for students to develop their interest and enjoyment in or express their
minds. It not only allows students to enjoy life, but to also expand their academic skills. However,
the focus of schools is on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics–STEM, rather than on
STEM and the arts: STEAM. Schools all around the world are focused on STEM because the world
is developing and becoming more complex. Students need to have the skills to think critically and
deeply, solve problems, garner and analyze evidence, and make sense of information. Arts education
enables students to develop these skills, open up their minds to new perspectives, enjoy life, and
flourish.
In the article "Why Arts Education Is Crucial, and Who's Doing It Best" by Fran Smith, the writer
suggests that arts education does solve problems. She discusses the years of research done to prove
the link between arts learning and social, emotional, and academic development. She points out that
involvement in music, theater, dance, and visual arts is related to critical thinking and
communication skills. The arts connect people closely to the world which opens up their minds to

The Importance Of Art In Education
Art has many uses within society beyond the extent of physical piece. Even without understanding a
piece of art, one can gain insights to their own lives and to the world around them. Many people
wonder why they need to be exposed to art when they are not working in a field that seems to be
related to art at all, however, certain teachings and studies have shown art to be more important to
the development of the individual than previously thought. One of these teaching methods is found
in Waldorf school curriculum. This style of teaching exposes its students to a variety of forms of art,
both utilitarian and representative. Through different art styles the teachings help to not only allow
the students to better understand and express themselves, but also to integrate their consciousness
with their bodies. Many Waldorf students go on to pursue careers in scientific fields like medicine or
chemistry, but they often cite their earlier education as the source of their success. Besides being
able to integrate one's mind with one's body, an exposure to art is important simply to have
knowledge outside one's immediate field. This allows the person to become more well–rounded in
their every day life, and to achieve different perspectives and solutions when faced with certain
situations or problems. Being knowledgeable about more than one thing helps people to think
differently, and by thinking differently they can come up with solutions that did not previously exist.

The Importance Of Art In Art Education
This world is under information explosion. Interactive media occupied our life to suffocating. Tv,
laptop, and smartphone connect us to the rest of the world 24/7. New technology and entertainment
struck our mind and conquered our life. Painting as an apparently archaic activity is relatively still
and pale to the extent some people labeled painting as dead. What is the meaning of painting after
we already have the camera to reserve any scene with just one click? What is the position of
painting after highly developed computer technology can do almost everything? I questioned myself
many times. In the country I grew up, academism had influenced artists and art education for
decades. Work from classical artists such as Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer,
Frans HALS, Jacques–Louis David is highly used as references in art education. Under this kind of
education, skill is particularly emphasized and in some cases, is the only pursuing goal at the end.
Being influenced by the art atmosphere there, I also practiced many detailed sketches of portraits
and sculptures. I enjoyed the peaceful time that I sat there for hours to cover every detail I observed
from the objects. Skills are essential, and this kind of work is attractive. However, I do not see it as
the final stop of my journey as an artist. I believed painting, as one of the lived experiences will
never be eclipsed. It is a medium that incorporates the most original impulsion of the human being.
However, in

The Importance Of Art In Education
This article demonstrates why art is important in education, which relates to the topic I discussed
earlier in this project. In this article, art education is defined as "any selective activity by which
concrete things are so arranged as to elicit attention to the distinctive values realizable by them."
The article explains why art plays a major role in psychology and education in general. The overall
scheme of this peer–reviewed journal is to discuss why art is important in education by listing the
skills developed through art education. Before summarizing this article, little information is
necessary about the author. Jean Temple is an educator and writer who focuses on English and
Literature. She composed the Journal, The English Journal bimonthly, and it consists of many
writings including the article The Function of Art in Education. Understanding the author's
information is important when researching a peer–reviewed article because it benefits to understand
what the author is writing about. The article begins with referencing John Dewey and his opinion on
fundamental weakness in today's educational process. It explains that art is a sensation of joy within
one and must be recognized in the classroom. The introduction indefinitely explains what art is and
why it is important. Next, an example of an artistic skill is presented–painting. The article explains
that a still–life is much more than a still life, and that it is instead a concept of line, color, texture,

Art Intergration in Education
Annotated Bibliography: Art Integration in Education The arts provide many unique benefits and
opportunities for those who are interested. It is a priceless way of expressing yourself and
understanding those around you. There are some things that can only be expressed through a form of
art, whether it be music, paintings, film, or writing. Art not only teaches us about ourselves and
emotions, but it uses a different part of our brain to put our art into effect. Art is essential for our
lives and therefore is fundamental to include in our education. The topic for my argument is saving
the arts in education and why it is important and necessary for students to have arts implemented
into their schooling. My policy claim is "continue using the same funding that schools have been
using for arts otherwise students learn differently without arts." My research questions needed for
this argument included: Why is art important for education? as well as, How do the arts affect
learning? In order to learn more and gain more adequate information I also asked the following
questions: What are the mental and cognitive benefits to arts in education?, How much would it
really take to keep the arts?, and What effects have taken place since the arts have been cut?
Integrating arts in education has been a topic over the last few decades. However, saving the art
programs in education is a more recent issue within the last 8–10 years as school budgets have
tightened and as well as the

The Arts And Arts Education
"Studies show that students in the arts outperformed their non–arts peers on the SAT by 96 points,
while a child who has continued access to arts education has a 74 percent higher chance of planning
to attend college" (Urist 9). The arts teach several lessons to children and they provide an equal
opportunity for everyone. The arts also provide a different form of discipline and insight into the
real world. While others may say that sports make kids strive for good grades, the arts support
children in a different way. Others may also say funding should go towards core subjects, but what
they don't know is that the humanities use the core subjects during classes. Even though fine arts are
not exciting for everyone, they should receive more funding in schools because fine arts keep kids
out of trouble, provide a way to express oneself and help teenagers make life decisions.
Every year fine arts and humanities programs are cut from high schools. The fine arts and
humanities programs are the studies of art, literature, dance, music or theater. The fine arts are both
extra curricular and everyday subjects. Even though Language Arts are considered a fine art, it is
also a regular core subject that is included in the school budget. In New York, the school budget
crisis happened in 1970 (Moskowitz 1). According to Eva Moscowitz, "For example, Committee
members visited P.S. 155, a school in which the makeshift art room was separated from the cafeteria

children need to learn about the arts. All students should have the opportunity to experience a well–

reading, sciences and include the arts as an essential element. Arts education has been shown to
improve student performance. Certain forms of artistic practice have been linked to improvement of
cognitive capacities thought to be important for academics, for example, research suggests that
music training can improve spatiotemporal reasoning, and this may help with certain forms of
mathematics learning (Rinne, Gregory, Yarmolinskaya, and Hardiman (2011). Music training can
change brain circuitry and can improve general cognition in at least some circumstances. While
diligence training in one cognitive area can transfer to improvements in other cognitive skills.
Therefore, the arts can play a critical role in improving schools and educational outcomes for all
students.
When children learn to play music, their brains start to hear and process sounds that they normally
wouldn't hear. This helps them develop distinction between certain sounds and can aid in literacy,
which can lead to improved academic results in school. Attentive music listening increases the

There are many careers that have to rely on the arts and all the rest are influenced or supported by
the arts. Art is found in many areas of life to stimulate creativity and expand knowledge. Many
politicians decide to cut arts funding because they think the arts is not a necessity in our school
systems. They also believe that cutting funding in the arts will allow the United States to excel in
the subjects we are failing at in a worldwide standpoint such as the sciences, engineering, and
mathematics. Although many of them feel that way and want major budget cuts in the arts, the
people of our nation can fight and protest the government for what we want. Art integration is very
important to classrooms because of cognitive learning, identity, social justice, and future careers. Art
is found around every corner.
Children go to school because the need to learn and develop skills for the future. The children in the
United State are deprived of arts in their learnings. Within many aspects of art from the start of
putting pen on paper or the final piece the children can be engaged in critical analyses of their own
and other's work of art. The teacher can ask questions to provoke thoughts within the child such as

approach. In the reading by Paul Duncum he stated "Children identify their experiences and realize

How often in your free time do you draw a picture, maybe make a clay sculpture? Not too often
probably. Most people don't realize that art can be really beneficial for you. That's why I think that
art education should be in schools. Art education is not only beneficial to your brain, it can also help
with friendships and relationships plus art can help expand your brain.
Art has shown to help kids have stronger critical thinking skills, display higher levels of social
tolerance, and show greater historical empathy. Brian Kisida, Jay P Greene, and Daniel H did a large
scale random–assessment research study, through which they were able to prove that strong
relationships occurred between art education and a number of desirable outcomes. In this study
there was a new museum in the town so they, by lottery, selected students from local schools to go
on a field trip to the museum. After the field trip the students who had gone to the museum had
stronger critical thinking, they also displayed higher levels of social tolerance and showed greater
historical empathy. They also developed a taste for art museums and cultural institutions.
Playing an instrument can change your brain's structure, improve long term memory skills, and lead
to better brain development for those who start in childhood. Musicians may also be more mentally
alert. In a University of Montreal study they showed that musicians have much faster reaction times
than non–musicians. In the study they had 35 total participants, 16 were musicians who had been
playing their instruments for at least 7 years and 19 were non–musicians. During the study each
participant was seated in a quiet room and asked to keep one hand on a computer mouse and the
other on a small box that occasionally vibrated slightly. The participants were then instructed to
click on the mouse if the box vibrated or they heard a sound from the speakers in front of them or
when both things happened, these were done 180 times each. The results showed that the musicians
had faster reaction times than non–musicians. That is likely because musicians have to use multiple
senses. For example when a violin player is playing in an orchestra they have to use their sense of

Art Vs. Art Education
Art is defined as the expression or application of humans creative skills and imagination. Art is
found in almost everywhere in our day to day lives. Without peoples imagination and creative skills
we wouldn 't have buildings, technology and entertainment. Creativity is a important subject in
society, yet the subject being taught in schools is on a decline. How can we live in such an
advancing society when our future generations are not learning how to use their imagination or how
to apply their creative skills? Although people argue that more class time needs to be put towards
math and science classes, art classes need to increase in our schools. Art has many benefits on the
brain and "Students who have access to arts in or out of school tend to have better academic results,
better workforce opportunities, and more civic engagement" (National Endowment for the Arts). Art
education needs to improve because it is a helpful stress reliever, important for childhood
development and helps students succeed in school and life. Many people underestimate the benefits
of art on the brain. Art not only is a great stress reliever, but it is also a tool used to clear your head
and help tackle issues causing stress. A study done by the University of Westminer found that taking
a 30 min trip to a art museum can significantly lower your stress level (Bergado). Observing art also

Paul G. Allen, co–founder of Microsoft, once said, "In my own philanthropy and business
endeavors, I have seen the critical role that the arts play in stimulating creativity and in developing
vital communities....the arts have a crucial impact on our economy and are an important catalyst for
learning, discovery, and achievement in our country" ("Useful Quotes"). Over the past few decades,
the number of art classes offered at school has greatly declined (Farr). This is often due to budget
cuts and the growing feeling that art classes have no value in student learning. Art classes should be
saved from budget cuts. This is because art teaches students about other cultures and diversity, it
helps students develop fine motor skills, and it helps students perform better academically.
In the first place, art is necessary because it brings people together. People have been painting for at
least 100,000 years (Aguilar). Humans have been using painting to express themselves to each other
for tens of thousands of years. Looking at the art of other cultures helps students develop cultural
awareness. Art does not separate people based on gender, race, age, or language. Children can learn
that there is more than one way to interpret the world through art. In addition, art can teach children
that limits on language can be overcome through other ways of expression like art. This is because
no matter what language a person speaks, he can interpret a painting. Not only does art teach

Visual Arts Education : The Importance Of Art Education
Art Education is an intricate dance between what is needed, wanted, and reflected by society. The
ancient Greeks had a belief that those who created, such as a craftsman, should be shown little
respect or appreciation. The importance was placed on music and the affluent did not participate in
the visual arts. Even though there was resistance, Plato was a visual arts advocate and the Greek's
granted visual arts its own curriculum. The Romans maintained this position on the visual arts.
However, in the Middle Ages, monks began to practice art; such as the Illuminated Manuscripts.
They would then train others extensively in apprenticeships. New technologies, brought new
processes that were taught in this same time consuming workshop fashion. The Renaissance, and its
focus on beauty and the figure, brought a new attitude of respect and admiration for the visual arts.
It was taught as classical training along with the workshops. The French developed a more
structured way of how and what was to be taught concerning the visual arts in their own academies.
However, all of these advances were mostly only available to the rich. This attitude was carried into
colonial America where art was taught as a "luxury pursuit" (Efland, 1990) that was not deemed as
very lucrative. The Industrial Revolution played an important role in the alteration of arts education.
Visual Arts education now needed to include design and production aspects and focuses. At this time

Arts Is An Institution Of Higher Education
Wesleyan is an institution of higher education, and I would place education at the center of all fine
arts programming.
Many of us are aware of the transformative power of Arts performances and exhibits. I 'll call this
arts enrichment. The Arts reach deeply into our unconscious minds and make an imprint beyond
where the written or spoken word can go. The Arts open minds to pluralistic thinking and banish
barriers between various groups within the human race without in–your–face politics or flag waving
sentimentality. With subtlety of expression, the Arts elevate us to our best selves, and our society to
both its cultural differences and oneness. But many of us know this.
Arts Education (capital E) is a noble pursuit to which I devote much of my life and career. Every
student needs the vocabulary, skills and perceptions gained by studying Art, Culture and the
Humanities. Too many people say, "I took piano for a few years, but I quit," or "I saw the movie,
why go out on a rainy night to see the play," unaware that music belongs to us all, art belongs to us
all, and a cathartic experience in a darkened theater makes us think, feel and become more human.
Art is as much a way for us to understand ourselves as knowing our history or understanding the
laws of physics. Art is not for artists and talented people, art is for us all, but some students may not
see the relevance of attending an art opening when final exams are looming.

The Importance Of Art Education
Art education is important.
Everywhere you look you see art. It is everywhere in our life today and has become an important
part of our daily life. Arts education helps students develop creativity, visual learning, self–
confidence, decision making, improved academic performance, and self–motivation. All are
necessary to be successful in life. "Art education isn't something we add on after we've achieved
other priorities, like raising test scores and getting kids into college," said the First Lady Michelle
Obama. Art education is important for future students. It allows students to learn about themselves,
their culture, their community and the world around them. Creativity and Imagination will be
encouraged through the development of an artistic mind. Art uses science, math, and creativity. Art
uses math because it involves shapes and angles and when people make an art project with
geometric shapes they use math to find what is this angle worth? Science needs art because art helps
people to understand and see what they are learning in science classes. Scientists always use and

Arts improves creative skills. Whether it is thinking, painting, cooking or dancing, we do art as if it's
our own. Art education is one of the most important classes in school. Creativity in art class allows
students to express themselves better than in English or Math class. Everyone gets to be themselves.

Visual Arts And Art Education
This essay is about visual arts/design education, visual culture education and a brief history of visual
art/design education. This essay aims to explore the connections of arts education, history of arts
education and visual culture education through a theoretical investigation of literature by theorist
Addison and Burgess 2015, Efland 1990, Eisenhauer 2006, Macdonald 2004, McFee 1960, Jetton
and Shanahan 2012. For the context of this study art/design education will simply be represented by
'art education'. I will use a qualitative research method
My essay begins with investigating the term visual arts. The phrase visual arts create a connection to
the world through the 'ways of seeing'. The emphasis on what could be looked at heard and touched.
Therefore visual arts are an area of learning that focuses art forms that could be visually and audibly
appreciated. Example: painting, drawing, printing, weaving, ceramics, sculpture, tapestry, carpentry
etc. According to Addison and Burgess (2015:1) art and design is potentially a ... Show more

For the reason that visual arts education is constantly changing I believe we can for now analyze it
as a social construction influenced by culture and the social context which it explains. Arts
education has been a vehicle that assists us in making meanings possible.
The continued success of art education should be focused on studying art through individual
experiences, and development. Also art history and the study of visual culture are meaningless in the
lives of learners unless they are better integrated into the art education curriculum (Mcfee 1960:18).
Although arts education has made great historical strides Efland (1990:263) still questions the
system of art education curricula particularly the educator's way of facilitating skills

The Importance Of Education In The Arts
Throughout my academic career I have repeatedly been exposed to the topic of education in the arts.
More specifically, I encountered the debate of whether art programs should be funded by school
districts. I never quite understood why it was such a big question, but many oppose the idea, due to
the belief that art is not a necessity. I would consider those people who disagree with art funding
idiotic; as I consider it an absolute necessity that school districts provide funding for the arts. One of
the most obvious reasons why school districts should fund arts education is that it is crucial when
tapping into one's creativity. Creative thinking is important to one's ability to open their mind to new
and innovative ideas, that can lead to wonderful discoveries. Those on the opposing side consider
creative thinking to be an untamed and unconventional process that has no real significance or
importance to society and success. I beg to differ as our society would not be able to thrive as it does
and will continue without creative minds. It took a creative mind to develop social media, the
internet, and profitable clothing companies. Without creativity we would not have the things that
make our society so advanced. The arts deserve a place in the school system as a means to
encourage and motivate children and adolescents to strive for success, and to create things that
could change the world. Allowing the arts in an educational setting can positively influence a

Arts Education
Introduction
"When you think about the purpose of education, there are three. We're preparing kids for jobs.
We're preparing them to be citizens. And we're teaching them to be human beings who can enjoy the
deeper forms of beauty. The third is as important as the other two," says Tom Horne, the state
superintendent of public instruction in Arizona.
Arts Education in the school system has been declining since the 1980's. Budget cuts and standards
put in core classes like reading and math make it almost impossible to find a good arts education in
public schools. The money that was used to fund the arts programs is now being denied and being
put towards the classes that are being required to take standardized tests.
What most people don't know is that the arts help in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It estimated that since 2008, more than 80 percent of schools nationwide experienced cuts to their

completely eliminated from affected school districts." People feel that arts classes are less important
than core classes. When it comes to picking which one stays and which one goes in a situation like
this, they feel that they are making the obvious choice by getting rid of the arts education courses.
Other reason that Metla talks about in her article, are the heavier standards put in the core classes,
"In addition to less money being spent on education because of the recession, various government
policies, including the No Child Left Behind Act and the Common Core State Standards have placed
greater emphasis on core subjects, such as math and reading. In doing so, they have sidelined arts

Art Education And Education : An Importance On Education
1. Of the Eight reasons listed in Chapter one (pages 1–10 in text) for reasons that art is important in
a child's P–6 education, please explain which one or two that in your opinion are the most valid due
to your personal experiences or observations.
Art education teaches students the skills needed to meet the national needs. Art education also
teaches students general and artistic creativity. The first one stood out to me, because I like how it
stated that our nation needs citizens who can think for themselves, which is very important. In my
experience, people like to be told exactly what to do instead of having wiggle room for their own
creativity. We need creative people in the world to create, problem solve, and critically think. We
need citizens who will think for themselves and use their skills to better our nation. The second one
stood out to me also because in my observations, kids aren't getting the chance to portray their
feelings, and emotions into art. This understanding of arts, allows kids to see multiple perspectives
and create a desire to explore. Kids need to feel ownership over learning, and art gives them that
opportunity. The skills taught in art with give kids the chance to develop their own creativity, which
will help them in all other subjects. It will allow them to critically think in math, think deeper in
reading, among many other added benefits.

Art In Education : The Importance Of Fine Arts In Schools
Bob Bryant, the Executive Director of Fine Arts for Katy ISD in 2000, emphasises the importance
of utilizing art in schools' curriculums: "The arts are what make us most human, most complete as
people. The arts cannot be learned through occasional or random exposure any more than math or
science can" (Bryant). Art is a way of expression and leads to acquiring a deeper understanding of
the details in life. The first day of preschool, teachers teach through the help of art. This is due to the
fact that art is the foundation of a child's learning. Art is a way, where one can explore their ideas
and thoughts. Creativity should neither be contained nor limited. Art is an outlet used for people to
show who they are. The aspect of art is carried along in each generation. Different cultures use art to
show who they are as one. Art appeals to people's senses and emotions, which helps people connect
with one another. Since art is an essential, integral part in a student's academic learning, schools
should make art classes mandatory. During school, students should be engaged and willing to learn
more about what they are learning. With art, there is no need for someone to be good at it. Art is
dependent only on the artist herself. If students view art as just another subject, then they are
missing the academic value art gives. Art goes beyond having artistic value and surpasses the idea
of one's own limits. According to Allyono17, one of the authors of an article in Teen Ink magazine,

This article is based on a study that was funded in 2001 by the National Art Education Foundation
and it focused on the use of arts education in juvenile detention centers in the United States (107).
The purpose of this study was to figure out if art education helped children and teens in juvenile
detention centers to have a better vision of the future (107). The National Art Education Foundation
created a survey to support their research and it was composed of 17 multiple choice and short
answer questions (108). The questions in the survey asked people of each institution about funding,
instruction, demographics, and participation in the art programs. This survey was given to each of

Over three–fourths of the respondents (76%) reported that their art program had a community
outreach program involved (112). Art education in juvenile facilities can either be required for their
education, mandatory, recommended, voluntary, or a reward for positive behavior (113–114). The
researcher chose to study the Northeastern Training School (NETS) due to its reputation of the arts
programs, their successful transitions program, longevity, and willingness to participate (114).
During this study, the researcher spent two days at NETS and Studio 200 and during this time the
researcher interviewed the principal, Volunteers in service to America (VISTA) volunteer, the
director of studio 200, the school art teacher, and three university students that worked closely with
studio 200, Long Street Studio, and NETS but no students were interviewed (114). The researcher
attended a hip–hop performance, a poetry slam and took notes in an art class at NETS, observing
how the students and teacher reacted toward each other (114). This review took place to see if these
art programs had secure funding, how was this art being expressed, and the students' relationship
with Studio 200 in order to get a good picture of a correctional institution emphasizing the arts

The Importance Of Arts Education
Many young girls dream about being ballerinas when they grow up. Most adults think it is sweet,
and some parents even sign their children up for dance classes. However, as they age, that dream of
being a professional dancer appears to be inadequate. Why is that? In our culture, there is a lack of
importance on the arts, and thus, a lack of funding. Many see the arts as frivolous and a cost that is
not imperative to the success of a nation. On the other hand, one could ask how a country can be
successful without a cultural identity that is largely created by the arts and humanities in the society.
President Lyndon B. Johnson declared that, "Any 'advanced civilization' must fully value the arts,
the humanities, and cultural activity" (Deb). Being a professional artist of any kind seems like an
unstable career because there is a lack of consistent and substantial funding for them. The only way
to change the funding crisis is to fight the cultural tendency to dismiss the importance of the arts.
This will happen through educating those who have yet to lose that sense of innocence, wonder, and
imagination, and integrating the arts into their academic and social lives. In recent years there have
been many events that have lead to the decline of arts funding. First, was the budget cuts due to the
recession of 2008. "The problem within the public school districts is the decline of their arts
education programs. In many cases, arts programs were among the first to go" (Ramos 1).

Art in education
The arts are an essential ingredient for any child's education, allowing every student to accomplish
important things in life. I disagree that arts no longer holds a place in education. By imparting
important life skills, providing character education and better appreciation of the arts, arts become
essential to students in both the pursuit and achievement of excellence. Yet, many students have
little or no opportunity to learning arts as arts is devalued as a core element in the curriculum.
Education, without arts, is an incomplete education that fails to develop the full potential of
individuals, communities and societies. Hence arts are of great importance in the students' learning
experiences and should hold a place ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Community and civic engagement becomes an explicit purpose off arts in education, allowing the
students to exercise their voice and engage in community, civic and social issues. As they develop a
moral conscience, youths are more willing to help and extend a helping hand in improving lives of
the underprivileged in society. Also through exposure to literary texts from around the world,
students gain access to the consciousness and lived realities of other communities; they apply
critical reflection and ethical reasoning as the navigate various cultural and moral ambiguities
conveyed vividly through the struggles of various characters in texts and, in the process of
experiencing other worlds, they develop an imagination hospitable towards the powerless and the
foreign. Thus, arts become a form of inspiration and motivation for youths to take action to help the
less well–off, building up their character as well as imparting important values that all students must
gain in life. Hence, arts become vital in students' character building and value learning.
By having arts in education, it allows students to develop aesthetic awareness and enjoy the finer
things in life. Arts provide students with opportunities to have much broader discussions about their
lives, their culture and politics. The pursuit of cultural understanding raising awareness of other
cultures allows students to increase their cultural capital. Students are encouraged to

My Art And Art : My Education Of Art
I have never really had any great love for art, but I have never thought it could have any good effect
on me. I've known since I was little that not just the big things in museums that cost around $5000
were art, and that even the little things I would make an arts and crafts in my old school could be
considered art. However, I never imagine myself as an artist of any kind and always considered art
as just something pretty to look at. My education of art isn't really anything impressive, starting at
my first elementary school where I had both art and music in my kindergarten class, though it might
have been first grade I can't quite remember, and I wouldn't have another until my high school years
because it was mandatory. Though I had never really thought about to highly, this paper and the few
classes I've had in fine arts have made me think differently. Architecture and videogames have had a
great impact on my life and have even given me a goal to work after. To start on what I mean,
architecture is something that I have been obsessed with for many years, and perhaps I didn't even
realize it. I have always wanted a grand log cabin house and not just any old house, I want to design
and build it myself. I have never lived in a house I truly liked, in fact none of my known family
have either, except an aunt but I would never live with her. I have always lived in a trailer and
although I love my home that I have lived in for most of my life, is always had problems. Interior

Importance Of Art And Education
Art is a way for me to visualise my personal ideas and express myself in a way for others to
interpret. I enjoy being able to create something from an idea, as well as exploring my individuality
and by choosing this course I will be able to refine my skills to specialise in the areas I really enjoy.
So why fine art and education together? I believe that using art within a classroom as a teaching
method is a great way to actively involve pupils, and get everybody engaged with learning. I also
see it as a way of inspiring children to do their best, and being able to see a child overcome
struggles within their education and within their personal life will be very rewarding. I have
partaken in numerous activities which demonstrate my dedication to my subject areas, as well as
ways of gaining experience and utilising my skills. For example, I have volunteered for the NEC
Skills Show with my college where I exhibited work and taught members of the public various ways
of using make–up to create wounds. I have also visited primary schools to teach them art skills and
to help with painting murals of cartoon characters in their playground. Outside of college I have
tutored family friends for homework and grammar school entrance tests. At the end of my first year
at college I was chosen to have my work exhibited in the Origins 2017 exhibition in London
alongside the work of other individuals from all over England. I have also had experience with

Cost Of Art Education
Pablo Picasso once said "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he
grows up." Think about this, when a child is young they are given crayons and paper to occupy their
time; mothers sing to their babies or play them classical music. From a young age we are taught to
create, and we really are all artists. We create until creation is deemed nonessential, and the art
projects we work into our everyday routine are demoted to electives. "Funds for Education have
been cut in over 80% of U.S. schools in the last 10 years, and the first programs to leave are often
art education." Harvard President Drew Faust recently wrote. The same classes we as a nation are

School System needs to stop defunding art programs because art is important in our history. Without
art, we would have less interpretation of our history. In any history class we study the artists of each
time period and how they interpreted their times. Most of what artists do is tell stories, they help us
make sense of the world. It can connect us to the past, present and the future. Throughout history
our greatest minds have often merged discovery and art, the geniuses we learn about in history aren't
only math matachins or scientists, but artists on top of that. Einstein stressed the importance of
having a creative mind, once saying "I'm enough of an artist to draw freely from my imagination,
which I think is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the
world." Without art we would have a much more narrow view of our past, and future generations
will have a narrow view of our current events. Sure, you could say that we still have a history
without art; but without photos, paintings, and sculptures would we really fully grasp our past? By
cutting our generation off from art education we are cutting off future generations from learning too.
Without artists to document our history, our great grandchildren will be without that connection to
what's going on today. While art connects us to the past, and the world's history, it connects us to so

Art Education : The Future Of Arts Education
Art is all around us. It's a part of our everyday lives. As time goes on more and more people will
start to realize the importance of art. They will see that art is an essential tool that contributes to the
growth of society. The future of art will be nothing less than bright. I predict that art grow in all
aspects of life. In this essay, I will go into details of what I think the future holds for art education,
public art, and what I will contribute to the future of art. In the future, I predict that art will become
a core part of school curriculums. Currently there are debates circulating, arguing STEAM versus
STEM. Art is just as essential to students learning and development as math and science. In the
future, I think opposing side of these debates will come to realize the true importance of art. "Much
of what we know about the value of arts education and the power of the arts to motivate positive
change has been evidenced through many initiatives like the Turnaround Arts program on Obama's
Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and the Embracing Arts Education to Achieve Title I
Goals." (Robert L. Lynch). This quote is just one of many examples of powerful people fighting for
arts education.
In the future, I think Public Art will grow in popularity. The way I look at it, is that if people get
more educated in art throughout their years in school, they will understand the importance of public
art and how it contributes to our culture, so then they will be more

The Importance Of Art Education
What is the difference between a child a child in a lower income school and a higher income one?
The answer is opportunity. Children raised in lower income areas are less likely to have access to an
art education even in its most basic forms at a developmental stage. A young child is naturally
curious and has a drive to explore life and without an art education a child can lag severely behind
other more fortunate kids who have the opportunity to explore life through colors and develop basic
motor skills from holding a crayon and cutting paper. The definition of an art education varies based
on the access to materials. In one school it may be exploring texture and shape through clay, at
another it may be coloring a color sheet with crayons and markers.
At an early age children are predisposed to have creative needs. Their nature is curiosity and an art
education allows them to explore that while developing important life skills––motor skills, self
expression, team work. An art education is the ability to guide children through a multitude of areas
of art whether it be coloring and cutting paper to playing with play doh. All of these allow a child to
explore the world they live in through color and shadow and light and dark. An art education can
also involve a more thorough look at the culture behind the piece, who was the creator, what was
their motivation for the piece. Children who have been exposed to the arts are more likely to
identify these things early on due to the

Art Education : The Values Of Art And Arts Education
I will admit, I was not looking for any certain topic as I scrolled to find this article; however, the
headline caught my attention. As an art student influenced by art throughout life, I find the arts
crucial to behavioral and social development in the early stages of our lives. According to the article
Arts and Smarts, schools have been decreasing funding for the visual and musical arts as opposed to
academic classes such as math, reading, science, etc. I chose this article because it focuses on many
important factors dealing with art and social development. At the beginning of the article, it begins
with an endowment for the Arts Chairman gave the 2007 Commencement speech, he raised an
argument in favor of the values of the arts and arts education–Dana Gioia. He claims that "art is an
irreplaceable way of understanding and expressing the world" and I could not agree more. The arts
are very important because they hold history and teach us several life skills. Art improves our ways
of thinking and expressing ourselves; it is not just another basic academic study. Art gives us the
expression we sometimes cannot express through words and it erects emotions. It is also important
because it helps us critically think which is crucial in life. As we have discovered in Chapter 3 of
Exploring Psychology, we are able to examine our behavior based on MRIs, CT scans, and other
technologies by scanning and analyzing our brain activity. According to Karin Evans–former editor

The Importance Of Arts In Education
"Arts has a role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like
everyone else" Art in the education system is really important, the arts cannot be learned through a
random exposure any more like math or science. The arts is an one of the biggest part of the school
curriculum. Even though art is not necessary for people to use in the real world. It basically a way to
express creativity, but people can get that creativity from other courses by imagining projects and
creating them to help society, It is important to learn arts in our education because To watch a child
completely engaged in an arts experience is to recognize that the brain is on, driven by the aesthetic
and emotional imperative to make meaning, to say something, to represent what matters. and
Children will have opportunities to think and feel as they explore, problem solve, express, interpret,
and evaluate the process and the results.
The arts can a allow student to express themselves better than math or science. To watch a child
completely engaged in an arts experience is to recognize that the brain is on, driven by the aesthetic
and emotional imperative to make meaning, to say something, to represent what matters (Booth et
al). Self–expression is crucial for the development of students identity. When students feel like they
can openly express themselves, they can begin to explore their interests and strengths ("Self–

The Importance Of Arts In Education

  • 1. The Importance Of Arts In Education Some schools in the United States offer a variety of arts programs, while other schools may have mediocre to non–existent arts programs. Students in their early years of schooling from elementary to high school depending on whether he or she has an arts education can affect them in the long run. Art programs since the 1980s have integrated into public education, however the No Child Left Behind act has since put the arts in the decline. According to Americans, 93% of them agree the arts are vital to providing a well–rounded education for children and 86% agree that arts education encourages and assists in the improvement of a child 's attitude toward school. The National Education Association believes the arts play an important role in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under the No Child Left Behind Act, passed in 2002, the federal government started assessing school districts by their students' scores on reading and mathematics tests. Due to having reading and mathematics as the core way of assessing how much a school does and how much it receives in federal funding, schools focus more on reading and math over anything else including art. Deep budget cuts on the art education at the benefit of mathematics and reading has long–lasting effects on schools that do so. According to National Endowment for the Arts 2015 Annual Report, many state and local organizations depend on federal funding to sustain accessible arts programs throughout the country. With funding being limited, art has to be reduced as it 's deemed unimportant. Furthermore a study titled "The Role of the Fine and Performing Arts in High School Dropout Prevention," by the Center for Music Research at Florida State University, "Students at risk of not successfully completing their high school educations cite their participation in the arts as reasons for staying in school. Factors related to the arts that positively affected the motivation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Importance Of The Arts In Education As our education budget continues to diminish, our art programs have received the brunt of the cutbacks. In such schools, the arts exist in unappreciative, and even hostile environments. We should be fighting to keep art programs in the education system because they have been an essential part of American culture, they illuminate truths perceptually and more immediate than the spoken word, and they offer an indispensable educational dimension to our students. Throughout American history, artistic representations have portrayed a message of religion, racial, gender, political, class, and many other perspectives through the artist's eyes. Today, the arts serve as historical documents to help people better understand the world and our history. An example of such a time is when the artist David Gilmour Blythe helped bring the sheer brutality of the Civil War into the light. Blythe's Lincoln Crushing the Dragon of Rebellion (1862) incorporated images that helped people visually relate to what was happening in the war. The dragon represents the rebellion of the Confederate States, as suggested by the painting's title. The pillars having been destroyed by the dragon alludes to the rebellion destroying the foundation and support of our nation. As Lincoln poses to strike the dragon, you can see he is chained to a stump labeled "constitution" and "democracy." The chains handicapping Lincoln appear to be a critique of the constraints of the democratic process and the limits to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Art Education When I first started my art class I could not find a reason to get excited about it and I was not very confident about my art skills, so I wasn't sure what I would get out of the class. As the class progressed I realized it wasn't all about drawing and creating art project but also about the importance of the History of Art being taught in the classroom no matter what cultural or economic backgrounds the students come from. When one refers to Art education they are referring to education in the disciplines of music, dance, theater, and visual arts. Visual art was the arts our class focused on which refers to drawing, painting, sculptures, printmaking, crafts, photography, and filmmaking to name a few. Art can be very beneficial to all students from K–12th rather they are in a regular education class or a special education classroom. The good thing about art is it allows students to create things at their own developmental stage. It is critical for every student to be exposed to the benefits of integrating art into the academic curriculum. The teacher can add art to a science lesson and it would bring learning about blood cells to a different level. Instead of just reading about what a cell is they can draw it, or color code it by the different parts of the cell giving them a more in–depth understanding to how the different parts of the cell work. There is a lot of learning that takes place in the classroom but we must include the art so that all children will have the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Art Based Education William Bennet, the former US Secretary of Education, claims "The arts are an essential element of education . . . music, dance, painting . . . are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment" (ilmea.org, 2016, para 11). The arts are a crucial component to the success of students overall experience in the academic setting. Students exposed in the arts throughout their educational experience endure more benefits then those who go throughout school with no exposure to them. Schools must require creative art programs in the K–12 curricula, because of the academic, emotional, and social benefits for students. Discussion Academic. The most important aspect of school is the academics. What if the arts contributed to the academic benefits that students experienced? Arsenault (2009) describes how creative art programs can work alongside school subjects and help benefit the students to prosper through their studies. Research also shows that an art based learning achieve higher scores on academic tests (Miller, & Hopper, 2010). Miller & Hooper (2010) note how students who experience an art program throughout their school curricula demonstrate better academic success in all their subjects. Ruppert (2006) concluded that students who participated in art programs for four years or more, managed to outscore their classmates on the SAT by 58 points through the linguistic portion and by 38 points on the math. • 5. Art Education : The Importance Of The Arts And Education The arts have a long and storied past in the United States. Through the years the arts have ranged from a luxury to a staple, rising and falling in interest and availability based on public opinion (Heilig, Cole, & Aguilar, 2010). Despite the rocky road the arts have faced, they never disappear completely. Art supporters hope to one day see a society that values the arts, and for the need to arts advocacy to vanish. Art education has many intangible benefits. Through the arts students learn how to express their thoughts and feelings about their personal and community identity. Students are encouraged to utilize creative problem solving though the design and implementation of new ideas. Students learn perseverance and mental fortitude through reflection and critique (Ulbricht, 2002). While art advocates understand these intangibles, the general public often needs to see tangible outcomes. Studying the transfer of learning in the arts, is often not well received by art purists who believe the value of art education can and should be found in itself. Still other art advocates have found that the study of transfer has aided in gaining public support and garnering significant resources. Thus, transfer in the arts is a high interest and often heated topic. The intricate relationship between the arts and student learning has proven to be ripe with research but in demand of more (Catterall, 2002). The post No Child Left Behind (NCLB) era has left the art education field in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Benefits Of Arts Education In Schools Living in the twenty–first century, everywhere and everything is influenced by art. From local advertisement posters to world–wide famous sculptures, art is always playing a role. Unfortunately, art education fundings for schools have recently dropped by 50–70% (D'Amico). Because of this decrease, it could be detrimental to students by stripping them of their knowledge on arts. In schools, art has a huge part in giving students all their needs in order to succeed in their future lives. Arts education benefits students by three major ways: teaching good habits and skills, promoting knowledge on human creativity, and letting them express themselves through their artwork. Not only that, but students overall tend to do better on their schoolwork while being involved in arts education. Art is very broad when it comes to it's many forms, including: art literature, photography, music, dance, painting, and sculpting. Considering all, think about the different things that students can pick up from each category. From a single art class, students have the opportunity to learn a variety of superior habits and skills that could be very essential to their future selves. In a 2014 article, it informs that most arts "require concentration, patience, and perseverance and as such there is a real sense of accomplishment that accompanies completing activity as a child has worked on," ("The Benefits of Arts"). Each of these skills and habits could be highly useful for any career choice that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Importance Of Art In Education Art has existed for many centuries, longer than human civilisation. The earliest settlers who were the Indigenous people, had art as part of their cultural practices and identities. It was also used as a communication tool for emotions and conflicts situations (Nathan, 2008). They also used art to mark seasons and time, and to record historical events. In addition, as art can be any form, song and dance were seen as an art that were used to welcome or accept death and birth of humans. Theatre is also a form of art to propose solutions to life's dilemmas such as Shakespeare's plays. Also paintings of great nobles, heroes and villains were displayed and passed onto next generations. Hence, (Ewing 2010, p.1) asserts that language alone would not have been able to communicate the important moments of our time. Therefore, art has a significant existence in our everyday lives. And with education that plays an important tool in everyone lives, art will play an important role in order to enhance and support education. The arts strands identify the skills, knowledge, and understandings that students develop through learning in the arts. Benefits of learning creative arts give the children opportunity to explore, express their own ideas, understand and have the confident about their creativity, feelings and getting ideas from others. (Sinclair, C Jeannert, N. & O'Toole J 2012, p.17). There are several theories have been developed by Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky..." Jean Piaget ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Arts And Education : The Importance Of Arts Education Outline Plain, repetitive academic classes can definitely become old and dull–especially when it could be all that's happening daily. Students become bored and dissatisfied with this lifestyle, but the integration of arts can cause various changes in a student's life. The arts in classroom curriculum open up a diversity of things for students to develop their interest and enjoyment in or express their minds. It not only allows students to enjoy life, but to also expand their academic skills. However, the focus of schools is on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics–STEM, rather than on STEM and the arts: STEAM. Schools all around the world are focused on STEM because the world is developing and becoming more complex. Students need to have the skills to think critically and deeply, solve problems, garner and analyze evidence, and make sense of information. Arts education enables students to develop these skills, open up their minds to new perspectives, enjoy life, and flourish. In the article "Why Arts Education Is Crucial, and Who's Doing It Best" by Fran Smith, the writer suggests that arts education does solve problems. She discusses the years of research done to prove the link between arts learning and social, emotional, and academic development. She points out that involvement in music, theater, dance, and visual arts is related to critical thinking and communication skills. The arts connect people closely to the world which opens up their minds to new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Importance Of Art In Education Art has many uses within society beyond the extent of physical piece. Even without understanding a piece of art, one can gain insights to their own lives and to the world around them. Many people wonder why they need to be exposed to art when they are not working in a field that seems to be related to art at all, however, certain teachings and studies have shown art to be more important to the development of the individual than previously thought. One of these teaching methods is found in Waldorf school curriculum. This style of teaching exposes its students to a variety of forms of art, both utilitarian and representative. Through different art styles the teachings help to not only allow the students to better understand and express themselves, but also to integrate their consciousness with their bodies. Many Waldorf students go on to pursue careers in scientific fields like medicine or chemistry, but they often cite their earlier education as the source of their success. Besides being able to integrate one's mind with one's body, an exposure to art is important simply to have knowledge outside one's immediate field. This allows the person to become more well–rounded in their every day life, and to achieve different perspectives and solutions when faced with certain situations or problems. Being knowledgeable about more than one thing helps people to think differently, and by thinking differently they can come up with solutions that did not previously exist. It is this ... • 10. The Importance Of Art In Art Education This world is under information explosion. Interactive media occupied our life to suffocating. Tv, laptop, and smartphone connect us to the rest of the world 24/7. New technology and entertainment struck our mind and conquered our life. Painting as an apparently archaic activity is relatively still and pale to the extent some people labeled painting as dead. What is the meaning of painting after we already have the camera to reserve any scene with just one click? What is the position of painting after highly developed computer technology can do almost everything? I questioned myself many times. In the country I grew up, academism had influenced artists and art education for decades. Work from classical artists such as Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Frans HALS, Jacques–Louis David is highly used as references in art education. Under this kind of education, skill is particularly emphasized and in some cases, is the only pursuing goal at the end. Being influenced by the art atmosphere there, I also practiced many detailed sketches of portraits and sculptures. I enjoyed the peaceful time that I sat there for hours to cover every detail I observed from the objects. Skills are essential, and this kind of work is attractive. However, I do not see it as the final stop of my journey as an artist. I believed painting, as one of the lived experiences will never be eclipsed. It is a medium that incorporates the most original impulsion of the human being. However, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Importance Of Art In Education This article demonstrates why art is important in education, which relates to the topic I discussed earlier in this project. In this article, art education is defined as "any selective activity by which concrete things are so arranged as to elicit attention to the distinctive values realizable by them." The article explains why art plays a major role in psychology and education in general. The overall scheme of this peer–reviewed journal is to discuss why art is important in education by listing the skills developed through art education. Before summarizing this article, little information is necessary about the author. Jean Temple is an educator and writer who focuses on English and Literature. She composed the Journal, The English Journal bimonthly, and it consists of many writings including the article The Function of Art in Education. Understanding the author's information is important when researching a peer–reviewed article because it benefits to understand what the author is writing about. The article begins with referencing John Dewey and his opinion on fundamental weakness in today's educational process. It explains that art is a sensation of joy within one and must be recognized in the classroom. The introduction indefinitely explains what art is and why it is important. Next, an example of an artistic skill is presented–painting. The article explains that a still–life is much more than a still life, and that it is instead a concept of line, color, texture, and ... • 12. Art Intergration in Education Annotated Bibliography: Art Integration in Education The arts provide many unique benefits and opportunities for those who are interested. It is a priceless way of expressing yourself and understanding those around you. There are some things that can only be expressed through a form of art, whether it be music, paintings, film, or writing. Art not only teaches us about ourselves and emotions, but it uses a different part of our brain to put our art into effect. Art is essential for our lives and therefore is fundamental to include in our education. The topic for my argument is saving the arts in education and why it is important and necessary for students to have arts implemented into their schooling. My policy claim is "continue using the same funding that schools have been using for arts otherwise students learn differently without arts." My research questions needed for this argument included: Why is art important for education? as well as, How do the arts affect learning? In order to learn more and gain more adequate information I also asked the following questions: What are the mental and cognitive benefits to arts in education?, How much would it really take to keep the arts?, and What effects have taken place since the arts have been cut? Integrating arts in education has been a topic over the last few decades. However, saving the art programs in education is a more recent issue within the last 8–10 years as school budgets have tightened and as well as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Arts And Arts Education "Studies show that students in the arts outperformed their non–arts peers on the SAT by 96 points, while a child who has continued access to arts education has a 74 percent higher chance of planning to attend college" (Urist 9). The arts teach several lessons to children and they provide an equal opportunity for everyone. The arts also provide a different form of discipline and insight into the real world. While others may say that sports make kids strive for good grades, the arts support children in a different way. Others may also say funding should go towards core subjects, but what they don't know is that the humanities use the core subjects during classes. Even though fine arts are not exciting for everyone, they should receive more funding in schools because fine arts keep kids out of trouble, provide a way to express oneself and help teenagers make life decisions. Every year fine arts and humanities programs are cut from high schools. The fine arts and humanities programs are the studies of art, literature, dance, music or theater. The fine arts are both extra curricular and everyday subjects. Even though Language Arts are considered a fine art, it is also a regular core subject that is included in the school budget. In New York, the school budget crisis happened in 1970 (Moskowitz 1). All students should have the opportunity to experience a well– rounded education. An education that pushes beyond the normal subjects of mathematics, writing, reading, sciences and include the arts as an essential element. Arts education has been shown to improve student performance. Certain forms of artistic practice have been linked to improvement of cognitive capacities thought to be important for academics, for example, research suggests that music training can improve spatiotemporal reasoning, and this may help with certain forms of mathematics learning (Rinne, Gregory, Yarmolinskaya, and Hardiman (2011). Music training can change brain circuitry and can improve general cognition in at least some circumstances. While diligence training in one cognitive area can transfer to improvements in other cognitive skills. Therefore, the arts can play a critical role in improving schools and educational outcomes for all students. When children learn to play music, their brains start to hear and process sounds that they normally wouldn't hear. This helps them develop distinction between certain sounds and can aid in literacy, which can lead to improved academic results in school. • 15. The Importance Of Art In Education There are many careers that have to rely on the arts and all the rest are influenced or supported by the arts. Art is found in many areas of life to stimulate creativity and expand knowledge. Many politicians decide to cut arts funding because they think the arts is not a necessity in our school systems. They also believe that cutting funding in the arts will allow the United States to excel in the subjects we are failing at in a worldwide standpoint such as the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Although many of them feel that way and want major budget cuts in the arts, the people of our nation can fight and protest the government for what we want. Art integration is very important to classrooms because of cognitive learning, identity, social justice, and future careers. Art is found around every corner. Children go to school because the need to learn and develop skills for the future. The children in the United State are deprived of arts in their learnings. Within many aspects of art from the start of putting pen on paper or the final piece the children can be engaged in critical analyses of their own and other's work of art. The teacher can ask questions to provoke thoughts within the child such as how? Or why? Questions which will help children think about their work in a different critical approach. In the reading by Paul Duncum he stated "Children identify their experiences and realize more fully the meaning of their work. By constantly using technical, formal ... • 16. Importance Of Art Education How often in your free time do you draw a picture, maybe make a clay sculpture? Not too often probably. Most people don't realize that art can be really beneficial for you. That's why I think that art education should be in schools. Art education is not only beneficial to your brain, it can also help with friendships and relationships plus art can help expand your brain. Art has shown to help kids have stronger critical thinking skills, display higher levels of social tolerance, and show greater historical empathy. Brian Kisida, Jay P Greene, and Daniel H did a large scale random–assessment research study, through which they were able to prove that strong relationships occurred between art education and a number of desirable outcomes. In this study there was a new museum in the town so they, by lottery, selected students from local schools to go on a field trip to the museum. After the field trip the students who had gone to the museum had stronger critical thinking, they also displayed higher levels of social tolerance and showed greater historical empathy. They also developed a taste for art museums and cultural institutions. Playing an instrument can change your brain's structure, improve long term memory skills, and lead to better brain development for those who start in childhood. Musicians may also be more mentally alert. In a University of Montreal study they showed that musicians have much faster reaction times than non–musicians. In the study they had 35 total participants, 16 were musicians who had been playing their instruments for at least 7 years and 19 were non–musicians. During the study each participant was seated in a quiet room and asked to keep one hand on a computer mouse and the other on a small box that occasionally vibrated slightly. The participants were then instructed to click on the mouse if the box vibrated or they heard a sound from the speakers in front of them or when both things happened, these were done 180 times each. The results showed that the musicians had faster reaction times than non–musicians. That is likely because musicians have to use multiple senses. For example when a violin player is playing in an orchestra they have to use their sense of sight to read the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Art Vs. Art Education Art is defined as the expression or application of humans creative skills and imagination. Art is found in almost everywhere in our day to day lives. Without peoples imagination and creative skills we wouldn 't have buildings, technology and entertainment. Creativity is a important subject in society, yet the subject being taught in schools is on a decline. How can we live in such an advancing society when our future generations are not learning how to use their imagination or how to apply their creative skills? Although people argue that more class time needs to be put towards math and science classes, art classes need to increase in our schools. Art has many benefits on the brain and "Students who have access to arts in or out of school tend to have better academic results, better workforce opportunities, and more civic engagement" (National Endowment for the Arts). Art education needs to improve because it is a helpful stress reliever, important for childhood development and helps students succeed in school and life. Many people underestimate the benefits of art on the brain. Art not only is a great stress reliever, but it is also a tool used to clear your head and help tackle issues causing stress. A study done by the University of Westminer found that taking a 30 min trip to a art museum can significantly lower your stress level (Bergado). Observing art also sparks parts of the brain that are associated with emotions and contemplations, even if you are not looking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Over the past few decades, the number of art classes offered at school has greatly declined (Farr). This is often due to budget cuts and the growing feeling that art classes have no value in student learning. Art classes should be saved from budget cuts. This is because art teaches students about other cultures and diversity, it helps students develop fine motor skills, and it helps students perform better academically. In the first place, art is necessary because it brings people together. People have been painting for at least 100,000 years (Aguilar). Humans have been using painting to express themselves to each other for tens of thousands of years. Looking at the art of other cultures helps students develop cultural awareness. Art does not separate people based on gender, race, age, or language. Children can learn that there is more than one way to interpret the world through art. In addition, art can teach children that limits on language can be overcome through other ways of expression like art. This is because no matter what language a person speaks, he can interpret a painting. Not only does art teach ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Visual Arts Education : The Importance Of Art Education Art Education is an intricate dance between what is needed, wanted, and reflected by society. The ancient Greeks had a belief that those who created, such as a craftsman, should be shown little respect or appreciation. The importance was placed on music and the affluent did not participate in the visual arts. Even though there was resistance, Plato was a visual arts advocate and the Greek's granted visual arts its own curriculum. The Romans maintained this position on the visual arts. However, in the Middle Ages, monks began to practice art; such as the Illuminated Manuscripts. They would then train others extensively in apprenticeships. New technologies, brought new processes that were taught in this same time consuming workshop fashion. The Renaissance, and its focus on beauty and the figure, brought a new attitude of respect and admiration for the visual arts. It was taught as classical training along with the workshops. The French developed a more structured way of how and what was to be taught concerning the visual arts in their own academies. However, all of these advances were mostly only available to the rich. This attitude was carried into colonial America where art was taught as a "luxury pursuit" (Efland, 1990) that was not deemed as very lucrative. The Industrial Revolution played an important role in the alteration of arts education. Visual Arts education now needed to include design and production aspects and focuses. • 21. Arts Is An Institution Of Higher Education Wesleyan is an institution of higher education, and I would place education at the center of all fine arts programming. Many of us are aware of the transformative power of Arts performances and exhibits. I 'll call this arts enrichment. The Arts reach deeply into our unconscious minds and make an imprint beyond where the written or spoken word can go. The Arts open minds to pluralistic thinking and banish barriers between various groups within the human race without in–your–face politics or flag waving sentimentality. With subtlety of expression, the Arts elevate us to our best selves, and our society to both its cultural differences and oneness. But many of us know this. Arts Education (capital E) is a noble pursuit to which I devote much of my life and career. Every student needs the vocabulary, skills and perceptions gained by studying Art, Culture and the Humanities. Too many people say, "I took piano for a few years, but I quit," or "I saw the movie, why go out on a rainy night to see the play," unaware that music belongs to us all, art belongs to us all, and a cathartic experience in a darkened theater makes us think, feel and become more human. Art is as much a way for us to understand ourselves as knowing our history or understanding the laws of physics. Art is not for artists and talented people, art is for us all, but some students may not see the relevance of attending an art opening when final exams are looming. • 26. The Importance Of Education In The Arts Throughout my academic career I have repeatedly been exposed to the topic of education in the arts. More specifically, I encountered the debate of whether art programs should be funded by school districts. I never quite understood why it was such a big question, but many oppose the idea, due to the belief that art is not a necessity. I would consider those people who disagree with art funding idiotic; as I consider it an absolute necessity that school districts provide funding for the arts. One of the most obvious reasons why school districts should fund arts education is that it is crucial when tapping into one's creativity. Creative thinking is important to one's ability to open their mind to new and innovative ideas, that can lead to wonderful discoveries. Those on the opposing side consider creative thinking to be an untamed and unconventional process that has no real significance or importance to society and success. I beg to differ as our society would not be able to thrive as it does and will continue without creative minds. It took a creative mind to develop social media, the internet, and profitable clothing companies. Without creativity we would not have the things that make our society so advanced. Of the Eight reasons listed in Chapter one (pages 1–10 in text) for reasons that art is important in a child's P–6 education, please explain which one or two that in your opinion are the most valid due to your personal experiences or observations. Art education teaches students the skills needed to meet the national needs. Art education also teaches students general and artistic creativity. The first one stood out to me, because I like how it stated that our nation needs citizens who can think for themselves, which is very important. In my experience, people like to be told exactly what to do instead of having wiggle room for their own creativity. We need creative people in the world to create, problem solve, and critically think. We need citizens who will think for themselves and use their skills to better our nation. The second one stood out to me also because in my observations, kids aren't getting the chance to portray their feelings, and emotions into art. This understanding of arts, allows kids to see multiple perspectives and create a desire to explore. Kids need to feel ownership over learning, and art gives them that opportunity. The skills taught in art with give kids the chance to develop their own creativity, which will help them in all other subjects. It will allow them to critically think in math, think deeper in reading, among many other added benefits. 2. Please choose one of the 8 reasons for why art is important listed in chapter one ... Art In Education : The Importance Of Fine Arts In Schools Bob Bryant, the Executive Director of Fine Arts for Katy ISD in 2000, emphasises the importance of utilizing art in schools' curriculums: "The arts are what make us most human, most complete as people. The arts cannot be learned through occasional or random exposure any more than math or science can" (Bryant). Art is a way of expression and leads to acquiring a deeper understanding of the details in life. The first day of preschool, teachers teach through the help of art. This is due to the fact that art is the foundation of a child's learning. Art is a way, where one can explore their ideas and thoughts. Creativity should neither be contained nor limited. Art is an outlet used for people to show who they are. The aspect of art is carried along in each generation. Different cultures use art to show who they are as one. Art appeals to people's senses and emotions, which helps people connect with one another. Since art is an essential, integral part in a student's academic learning, schools should make art classes mandatory. During school, students should be engaged and willing to learn more about what they are learning. With art, there is no need for someone to be good at it. Art is dependent only on the artist herself. If students view art as just another subject, then they are missing the academic value art gives. Art goes beyond having artistic value and surpasses the idea of one's own limits. • 31. The Importance Of Arts Education Many young girls dream about being ballerinas when they grow up. Most adults think it is sweet, and some parents even sign their children up for dance classes. However, as they age, that dream of being a professional dancer appears to be inadequate. Why is that? In our culture, there is a lack of importance on the arts, and thus, a lack of funding. Many see the arts as frivolous and a cost that is not imperative to the success of a nation. On the other hand, one could ask how a country can be successful without a cultural identity that is largely created by the arts and humanities in the society. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared that, "Any 'advanced civilization' must fully value the arts, the humanities, and cultural activity" (Deb). Being a professional artist of any kind seems like an unstable career because there is a lack of consistent and substantial funding for them. The only way to change the funding crisis is to fight the cultural tendency to dismiss the importance of the arts. This will happen through educating those who have yet to lose that sense of innocence, wonder, and imagination, and integrating the arts into their academic and social lives. In recent years there have been many events that have lead to the decline of arts funding. First, was the budget cuts due to the recession of 2008. "The problem within the public school districts is the decline of their arts education programs. In many cases, arts programs were among the first to go" (Ramos 1). ... Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." Without art we would have a much more narrow view of our past, and future generations will have a narrow view of our current events. Sure, you could say that we still have a history without art; but without photos, paintings, and sculptures would we really fully grasp our past? By cutting our generation off from art education we are cutting off future generations from learning too. Without artists to document our history, our great grandchildren will be without that connection to what's going on today. While art connects us to the past, and the world's history, it connects us to so much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this essay, I will go into details of what I think the future holds for art education, public art, and what I will contribute to the future of art. In the future, I predict that art will become a core part of school curriculums. Currently there are debates circulating, arguing STEAM versus STEM. Art is just as essential to students learning and development as math and science. In the future, I think opposing side of these debates will come to realize the true importance of art. "Much of what we know about the value of arts education and the power of the arts to motivate positive change has been evidenced through many initiatives like the Turnaround Arts program on Obama's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and the Embracing Arts Education to Achieve Title I Goals." (Robert L. Lynch). This quote is just one of many examples of powerful people fighting for arts education. In the future, I think Public Art will grow in popularity. The way I look at it, is that if people get more educated in art throughout their years in school, they will understand the importance of public art and how it contributes to our culture, so then they will be more ... • 37. The Importance Of Art Education What is the difference between a child a child in a lower income school and a higher income one? The answer is opportunity. Children raised in lower income areas are less likely to have access to an art education even in its most basic forms at a developmental stage. A young child is naturally curious and has a drive to explore life and without an art education a child can lag severely behind other more fortunate kids who have the opportunity to explore life through colors and develop basic motor skills from holding a crayon and cutting paper. The definition of an art education varies based on the access to materials. In one school it may be exploring texture and shape through clay, at another it may be coloring a color sheet with crayons and markers. At an early age children are predisposed to have creative needs. Their nature is curiosity and an art education allows them to explore that while developing important life skills––motor skills, self expression, team work. An art education is the ability to guide children through a multitude of areas of art whether it be coloring and cutting paper to playing with play doh. All of these allow a child to explore the world they live in through color and shadow and light and dark. An art education can also involve a more thorough look at the culture behind the piece, who was the creator, what was their motivation for the piece. Children who have been exposed to the arts are more likely to identify these things early on due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Art Education : The Values Of Art And Arts Education I will admit, I was not looking for any certain topic as I scrolled to find this article; however, the headline caught my attention. As an art student influenced by art throughout life, I find the arts crucial to behavioral and social development in the early stages of our lives. According to the article Arts and Smarts, schools have been decreasing funding for the visual and musical arts as opposed to academic classes such as math, reading, science, etc. I chose this article because it focuses on many important factors dealing with art and social development. At the beginning of the article, it begins with an endowment for the Arts Chairman gave the 2007 Commencement speech, he raised an argument in favor of the values of the arts and arts education–Dana Gioia. He claims that "art is an irreplaceable way of understanding and expressing the world" and I could not agree more. The arts are very important because they hold history and teach us several life skills. Art improves our ways of thinking and expressing ourselves; it is not just another basic academic study. Art gives us the expression we sometimes cannot express through words and it erects emotions. It is also important because it helps us critically think which is crucial in life. As we have discovered in Chapter 3 of Exploring Psychology, we are able to examine our behavior based on MRIs, CT scans, and other technologies by scanning and analyzing our brain activity. According to Karin Evans–former editor of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The arts can a allow student to express themselves better than math or science. To watch a child completely engaged in an arts experience is to recognize that the brain is on, driven by the aesthetic and emotional imperative to make meaning, to say something, to represent what matters (Booth et al).
